Having been retired for many, many years I was reminded just how long by your reference to "old-fashioned" flying. My commercial flying career ended just as the modern FMC was entering (reliable) service. ADF and VOR navigation could be a tiring but wonderful way to fly.
Thank you for the time and effort you put into these tutorials. Your explanations are clear and the real time demonstrations of each point really illustrates how things work. Excellent!
This is a great refresher course for me. It is not always easy to use all the terminology that a ppl course would use. Various fs tutors say for example 'Runway twenty one' when designators are stated as eg 'Runway two one' I'm sure there are many future pilots using the online video tutorials so where possible I think trying to get this stuff right will save them re-learning later. I think you do a great job and I enjoy the ride! Just one thing more, you refer to the compass o the instrument panel. The compass is fitted on the top centre all on its own. What you describe as the compass is a gyroscopic direction indicator which must be realigned with the magnetic compass regularly as precession alters the accuracy giving rise to nav errors. Just sayin'😎 Blue side up!👍
Thanks for this! I believe this is the same plane used for the adventures segment. NOTE: those four holes in the leading edge of the wing are vents for front and rear air intake for the occupants. If you look VERY closely, you will see a panel (4 rivets) which is rather washed out between the taxi / landing lights and the vent. The stall horn is there.
@@jonbeckett Thanks to your videos, I am already well on my way to flying safely on the PC I have now succeeded with the alt+tab, but even when I check connect to XPlane, I do not see my plane on little NavMap
Great job, as usual, Jonathan, and I'm learning so much from your beginner series. I have a question though about the ILS frequency. It is the same frequency for landing either direction on the runway. You changed to runway 5 but how did the VOR instrument know that? It's responding to the frequency you set, but that would be the same frequency if you were approaching from your original direction.
How does the plane know to head to or from the VOR? You put 85 on the OBS and the autopilot flies TO BPK @ 85, then you dial in 123 and it flies FROM BPK @ 123? How does it decide TO or FROM?
@@jonbeckett Yes, I now realize that I need to be within range of these channels. So now I use the (from indicator) of the runway where I'm taking off, and the (to indicator) of the runway when I'm near the beacon! I often practice the same flight to get familiar with the environment and how it improves! Since I cannot install MSFS 2020 due to our slow internet, I have to do everything in X plane. thanks 👍
Well, I must be the worst pilot ever. Because I’ve tried this two or three times now in XP12 and I get to the vicinity of Southend ok, but then the auto pilot “seems” to think about the ils approach, but then takes me out to sea. :(
It’s a gorgeous sim isn’t it? Although I’ve had a number of iterations of MSFS over the years, I switched to X-Plane at X-Plane 10. I’ve just had to choose again and after much soul searching, I ended up upgrading to X-Plane 12. Pretty sure I made a good choice, but vids like this one torture my inner graphics whore, that’s for sure. :)

I actually prefer using VOR stations, because it gives you something to do - versus "doing what the computer tells you" :)
Brilliant. Best tutorials on the net. Keep up the great work.
Glad you like them!
Nice tutorial, nice refresher for absentee pilot, have not flown in awhile, thx

You're very welcome!
Love your videos! This gives me a primer for VOR navigation.. brilliant, many thanks
Very helpfull video to use in the retrofit DC-3, and have a look at the airplane from the outside for a change ... on the long hauls.
Thanks a bunch.
Great videos
they have helped me a lot , flying this plane . keep up the great work
Always looking forward to your instructional videos. Hope in the future you can provide a series of videos on the turboprop like the TBM 930.
That's a good point - I haven't used the 930 in ages. Watch this space :)

Are you able to intercept a radial ? Really!!!! Without fmc,, it's a miracle!!!! 😊😊😊😊😊
Brilliant. Thankyou. Wonderful channel.
You're welcome :)
As Usual another excellent tutorial. An expensive flight though as the 172 appears to have been on full rich for the duration of the flight.
Excellent training video. Thanks
Glad you liked it! - don't forget to subscribe to see my new videos.
please make more vids, they are helping me so much, thankyou

Very helpfull video
How can I view little navmap in flight in Xplane 12?
I only have full screen in XPlane12!
I used to just alt+tab between them.
@@jonbeckett thanks for the info!
I bought the DVD version but the manual was in French
Why not in English is a mystery to me!
@@jonbeckett Thanks to your videos, I am already well on my way to flying safely on the PC
I have now succeeded with the alt+tab, but even when I check connect to XPlane, I do not see my plane on little NavMap
I found out that I need to install an extra plugin for Xplane, now everything works properly and I can triangulate my position!
Great video. Do you not press the SPR button to hear the morse code or is that for something else?
The audio panel does exactly what you have described (if configured correctly) :)
A wonderful video and an excellent explanation, as always. Thanks a lot, @jonathan becket
Brilliant thankyou
Very very helpful thank you Sir

Never mind. Just watched it again. Stupid question - sorry. You changed the direction on the CDI to fly to the ILS for runway 5.
Perfeito.
Thank you for a great video. I'm just getting into aviation and this is so helpful. I just have a question about your map, how can I get it?
Search for "Little Nav Map" :)
Wonderful, thank you!

The aircraft knows the direction it is pointing, versus the direction of the VOR.
How do I get this version of the plane ? Mine has gps
It's in the premium version of the simulator.
@@jonbeckett right on thanks
If you can't hear the Morse code in Xplane, how do you know you are within range of the chosen VOR station?
The needles and "from/to" indicator won't wake up without a signal.

A lot of rudder just before touchdown needed.
