- A quick IFR flight in the stock Cessna C172 in Microsoft Flight Simulator, taking a look at programming a route into the G1000, then flying it - investingating the various PFD options, operating the autopilot along the way through the various CDI and HSI modes, and navigating by VOR, GPS flight plan, and selected heading. We finish with an ILS approach.

Disclaimer - I'm not a real pilot! I just like messing around with simulators. If you spot a mistake (like running the engine flat out for the first fifteen minutes of the flight), please go easy on me lol.

Thank you for this video, just learning more about instrument flying as a rookie and your style is very easy to understand, makes it easy to understand
I have just progressed from VFR so this was an excellent introduction to a glass cockpit, thanks very much.
Glad it helped!
Thank you for the wonderful second segment. Finally I learned about the AP stuff.
There is a lot to learn in this vid. I have to watch it again. Cheers.
Glad it was helpful!
Enjoyed this video. Very helpful to me. Thank you
Terrific!
Thank you very much.
Continued success.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Soooooo helpful 😊
When using a VOR you will be flying a radial to or from a VOR station. Beacons are associated with NDB's, nondirectional beacons. The ADF (Automatic Direction Finder) radio is used to tune in a radio beacon. When using an ADF you will fly what is known as relative bearings. Very specific language is used when using radio navigation, I hope this helps when describing the use of these navigation aids.
And many thanks from me as well for this - I too have watched once, and will be doing so again - most instructive and helpful.
Regards, A
You're very welcome!
Nice video. Understandable and informative
Glad it was helpful!
Quality Vid...Thumbs Up!
Excellent and realistic presentation, thanks!
Excellent Video. Thanks
Thankyou for watching :)
This is really simple and straightforward, thank you. MFS encourages not to learn about the aircraft because the fuel supply is already on, etc., so that beginners can take off in a couple of clicks. But I needed a more detailed explanation and I got it, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Really great tutorial. Just a tip to the commenter, this usually happens to me if I spawn in on a runway or somewhere the plane should be started. Or maybe it’s an assistance setting?
I thought you are not supposed to turn on electronics until the engine is on... to avoid electricity spikes that can damage the electronics? Correct me if I am wrong.
The aircraft hasn't always been *that* accurate :) I updated this video recently, and provided some documentation - ruclips.net/video/jOaxtnbDqqk/видео.html
Hi Jonathan, is there any difference between entering a flight plane in the MS world map and in the cockpit as you video shows?.
Fantástico.
Thank you for the great explanation, now I have 1 question when I am outside the plane then I see information in the corners in 3 different instruments, how can I remove that so that I only see the plane without the instruments.
It's the HUD information - it took me 2 seconds to google it - Options->Camera->Chase Camera->Instrument Heads-Up Display->Off
Thank you❤
Why did you not pull the throttle back once in the horizontal cruise. Caught a glimpse of 2750 rpm, in the red.
I often miss things while talking :)
Sorry I'm a total novice flight sim, but how do you so freely look around the cockpit like that? I'm getting my instrument rating at the moment and plan on getting flight sim and trying to learn all the tricks and tips! Thanks!
Hold the right mouse button down, and you can pan the camera with the mouse. The cursor keys will let you slide the camera from side to side. If you re-map the up and down keys, you can slide forwards and backwards too :)
very helpful
The engine was screaming the whole flight…. You were so into the lesson…. You didnt notice it
Hi Jonathan
Thanks a lot for your video. Whats the hack to plug in a route directly from LNMap into the G1000 rather than manually programming it?
In the map screen of MSFS, go to "more", then load - you can load a PLN file. After doing that, the aircraft will be pre-programmed with the route.
Do you run all the world updates or are their one’s you avoid? Thanks in advance.
I have them all installed.
Hey Jon. Any reason your not using the NXI version?
I prefer to record stock aircraft videos unless I'm specifically showing a mod. Most people just have the stock aircraft.
What specs is your PC?
It's in the notes of every video :)
@@jonbeckett where can I see your notes?
Is there any way I can resolve this issue, on your sim screen 2 is my screen 1
How on earth did you manage that ? :)
@@jonbeckett don’t worry, I’ve resolved issue now, just started msfs and having fun learning the Cessna 172, Do u have any planes I can learn next might go onto the a320
@@Ed_Aviation If you're going to learn the big jets, I would go with the PMDG 737-600 - it's good value, and works well.
OR the FlyByWire A320.
What is that program your using in the beginning of your video?
