Decided i wanted to be a pilot recently, started plkaying msfs 2020 5 days ago. I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out VOR and you have made me understand it better than any other video I've watched so far. Saving this to use later for when I fly all over my home City of London...IN THE RAIN!
Commercial Multi-IFR pilot. One of the most straightforward, easy to understand explanations on these items I've come across. Nicely done. Great refresher. Thank you.
I'm convinced that when people ad a comment, they have the "I'll Bragg about myself" switch turned on. STOP BRAGGING ABOUT YOURSELVES, you don't need to tell the entire world what you're license is etc just to say it's a good /helpful video
I’ve watched a bunch of VOR videos and finally one has left me with not 2, not 1, but 0 questions. Well done and thank you! MSFS makes a great tool for real time modeling and practice as well
You are the very first, who managed to solve the riddles of combining VORs, DME and ADF for me. And i tell you, i'm quite some time into flightsims. Thanks a lot!
I don't know what you done, but I've watched countless tutorials about navigation and haven't been able to comprehend it. until i found this. kudos man, you've helped out a lot. subbed
Thankyou. Your tutorial video's are the the best I've seen and I especially liked the part about using the VOR to line up with the runway near the end of the video.
Thank you sunshine bro. I live in Kissimmee and ive been learning about this subject, your explanation is so simple and clean that i just took the grasp of it in one watch. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am using MSFS to complement the studies too. Safe flying Cap.
My man you made it so easy.. i kept getting lost on flight sim cause i want to keep it realistic. Never understood how to set the VOR ect. This is perfect. Sad thing is videos i watched with well known pilots... they didnt get to the point and was way too complicated
Brilliant video! I spent quite a while watching other videos trying to understand how to fly using VOR and you're video taught me everything I needed to know. Thanks very much :-)
Long ago I would go into flight similar and just put in some numbers that it understood as a location. And start it. Then use the VOR's to find out where I am! With 2 VOR'S I can draw lines out from them and where they meet is where I am. I did that for a long time before I started flight training!
Just realize that'll only work if the VOR is located on the airport property (and generally close to the runway in question). Plenty of VORs aren't located on/at the airport - in those cases (or if the VOR is at the airport but far from your desired runway) this trick will not work to line you up with the specific runway. You would need to reference the appropriate VOR Instrument Approach chart (if one exists) to know the appropriate OBS course to select.
Thanks Greg. It's a VOR simulator I found. Just Google VOR simulator. I wish it was downloadable software but all I have found so far is one through a web browser / website.
People DO still use VOR but yes, GPS has definitely taken over. You still have to learn VOR for IFR training. And VOR knowledge is just great to know, especially in the event that a GPS isn't working for some reason.
Do you know if the DME works? Especially in the 172, there seems to be no instrument specifically for it and on the display it doesn't look like it's working
Nice video, but haven’t seen anybody explain what all the knobs do on the ADF tuner. There’s a little turntable knob on the right and I was wondering what that did?
Thank you for the very informative video, which helped me to understand about them. May I ask which plane it was as I m new to the sim. I can't find this in the MSF2024. Anh I have a xbox x.
Thank you so much for this video buddy, I will definitely subscribe me now to your channel, it helped me a lot to understand the way it works and will also help me pass the exam ! cheers from Colombia
@@BradySkye I did my ppl (uk) in 2014 and it lapsed 4 years ago so I've just had my first reintroduction flight today and swatting up on radio nav incase my instructor asked for it on my skills test!
So if you were to plan a flight from Jacksonville FL to Memphis TN, you would need to plot out your route, knowing the direction of travel to the different VORs and all their frequencies.
Correct. At least have some VORs in mind in case your GPS failed ... but really you can just use a GPS. VORs were made before GPS technology. ForeFlight is a very popular app / subscription many people are using. I use it when flying from point A to B as well.
Omni means omni! It does not mean that the VOR transmitting station is transmitting discrete beams. Your airplane's receiver can calculate what radial it's on (or trying to find) and can calculate to/from info and it does so by receiving signals that are broadcast in all directions from the VOR transmitting station. Here's the best vid I've found on how this works: ruclips.net/video/tZ2gG1v9Xg8/видео.html
How would you find the airport you are looking to land at that’s not right near the VOR ? As you as you did for St Augustine. Cause I would think if you put in the runway heading you would just fly parallel if you don’t visually see it
@@BradySkye thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the needed Adobe Flash is out of Service and cant be installed anymore, as you can't get the Installer anymore. So all websites, using Adobe Flash, are dead. Do you maybe also know a different site, which still can be used?
My VOR on my Cessna 152 in the game (Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020), it's not showing any of the TO or FROM flags... I don't know why... I did tune the VOR correctly, and I heard the correct mores code. Can Somebody help me out? Thanks! :)
As a budding student of aviation, this was the best tutorial on VORs and their practical use. Thank you.

Great tutorial. Clear and easy to understand. I’ve got GPS down but was frustrated by these other nag guides. Excellent work. Helped greatly.
This is the first tutorial that I actually understand. Very well presented. Thanks.
Great to hear!

Very clear and concise explanation, thanks Brady. I especially liked the explanation of the use case of the second VOR frequency.
Thanks Tim! Glad this helped!
💯✔️!!
I’ve struggled with vor for God knows how long I finally understand how to use a gazillion thank you to you good sir
Awesome video, short and to the point. 10/10
Glad it helped! Thanks for the comment.
This was great thank you, I think flying light aircraft on a sim, vor or adf is a much more enjoyable way to fly
This was cool, just used it to figure out the VOR in the 152 in MSFS. Had a great flight and didnt use the VFR map once in the sim!
Nice Andrew! That's great to hear. Thanks for the feedback : ) Keep in touch.
Best tutorial about VOR navigation for MSFS on youtube. Thank you.
Thanks Ariel!
Best VOR Navigation tutorial I've come across so far, by far! Think I'm starting to get it. Where can I find free reliable charts though?
Glad to hear that! AirNav.com is one of the best places for free charts in the USA.

DME mostly just works with GPS’s I believe.

All it does is change the ADF frequency.

How to use vor if we need to fly not directly to a vor station, but between two stations (next to a station)?
That is more advanced and would be good to cover in another video. Unfortunately, VOR technology is becoming increasingly obsolete.
Thanks.
great video. How do you speed up your journey in the simulator? you said you speed it up 4x and 2x. Just wonder how you do that. cheers.
