  • Many of you have asked me to create on a video on how to track a VOR. So this video utilizes a VOR simulator, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and an aeronautical sectional to help you understand how to use VOR navigation. I threw in some extra info on ADF and DME as well. Hopefully after this lesson you will have a much better understanding of VOR navigation and can have some fun with it in a real airplane or on Microsoft Flight Simulator. Thanks for stopping by!

    • @ElkoBarbell
      @ElkoBarbell 3 года назад +1

      Just realize that'll only work if the VOR is located on the airport property (and generally close to the runway in question). Plenty of VORs aren't located on/at the airport - in those cases (or if the VOR is at the airport but far from your desired runway) this trick will not work to line you up with the specific runway. You would need to reference the appropriate VOR Instrument Approach chart (if one exists) to know the appropriate OBS course to select.

    Omni means omni! It does not mean that the VOR transmitting station is transmitting discrete beams.
    Your airplane's receiver can calculate what radial it's on (or trying to find) and can calculate to/from info and it does so by receiving signals that are broadcast in all directions from the VOR transmitting station. Here's the best vid I've found on how this works: ruclips.net/video/tZ2gG1v9Xg8/видео.html

      Correct. At least have some VORs in mind in case your GPS failed ... but really you can just use a GPS. VORs were made before GPS technology. ForeFlight is a very popular app / subscription many people are using. I use it when flying from point A to B as well.

      @@BradySkye I was at 5500 feet over the sea and the main VOR I was intercepting was HTO (H) 113.6 on Long Island heading from West to East however I looked up my problem a little more, turns out its a glitch that happens when you start the simulator without the planes engine on.
