- Many of you have asked me to create on a video on how to track a VOR. So this video utilizes a VOR simulator, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and an aeronautical sectional to help you understand how to use VOR navigation. I threw in some extra info on ADF and DME as well. Hopefully after this lesson you will have a much better understanding of VOR navigation and can have some fun with it in a real airplane or on Microsoft Flight Simulator. Thanks for stopping by!

As a budding student of aviation, this was the best tutorial on VORs and their practical use. Thank you.
Commercial Multi-IFR pilot. One of the most straightforward, easy to understand explanations on these items I've come across. Nicely done. Great refresher. Thank you.
Very easy way of explaining difficult concept. Thanks
Awesome video, short and to the point. 10/10
Glad it helped! Thanks for the comment.
This was cool, just used it to figure out the VOR in the 152 in MSFS. Had a great flight and didnt use the VFR map once in the sim!
Nice Andrew! That's great to hear. Thanks for the feedback : ) Keep in touch.
Nicely paced, and focused, easy to follow tutorial. Thanks.
This was great thank you, I think flying light aircraft on a sim, vor or adf is a much more enjoyable way to fly
Best tutorial about VOR navigation for MSFS on youtube. Thank you.
Thanks Ariel!
Thanks for the training! Was super well explained. Good stuff ... two thumbs up!
Much appreciated and glad it was helpful!
Tha ks very much I am going to now try plan a vor flight after watching this I am now subscribed
This is the first tutorial that I actually understand. Very well presented. Thanks.
Great to hear!
This is an excellent explanation, I’m at that point in the test prep of radio navigation, this clears it up!
Brilliant video! I spent quite a while watching other videos trying to understand how to fly using VOR and you're video taught me everything I needed to know. Thanks very much :-)
I’ve watched a bunch of VOR videos and finally one has left me with not 2, not 1, but 0 questions. Well done and thank you! MSFS makes a great tool for real time modeling and practice as well
You are the very first, who managed to solve the riddles of combining VORs, DME and ADF for me. And i tell you, i'm quite some time into flightsims. Thanks a lot!
Brady ! THANK YOU ! Amazing video !
Very well explained 👍🏼
Thankyou. Your tutorial video's are the the best I've seen and I especially liked the part about using the VOR to line up with the runway near the end of the video.
Thanks Cathrynn! That's wonderful to hear.

Right to the point. Nice video.
Dude, thank you for making this!!
You're welcome bro!
Best VOR Navigation tutorial I've come across so far, by far! Think I'm starting to get it. Where can I find free reliable charts though?
Glad to hear that! AirNav.com is one of the best places for free charts in the USA.
@@BradySkye do you have recommendations for Europe and the rest of the world, too?
@@pfr2544 Yes. GPS lol.
@@BradySkye GPS is just for girls! 😉
@@pfr2544 lol. Whatever keeps people from crashing is fine with me.
Great video, easy to follow and so much info and my head isn’t spinning!!
Thanks a lot!
Dude good job 👏
Awesome tutorial! It all made sense to me thanks to you, I had no idea that VOR could be used for landing!
Glad I could help!
Perfect!! Your videos are great. Thank you!
Hey thanks so much! That means a lot.
Thank you!
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Hey glad you enjoyed it! I’m excited to get back into Flight Sim. I just set it up on a new computer. Expect a lot more content coming soon.
Very informative. learn a lot today. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Great tutorial thank you. Nice to know how to line up with a runway by turning the OBS to runway heading and follow the needle. Pretty cool.
Just realize that'll only work if the VOR is located on the airport property (and generally close to the runway in question). Plenty of VORs aren't located on/at the airport - in those cases (or if the VOR is at the airport but far from your desired runway) this trick will not work to line you up with the specific runway. You would need to reference the appropriate VOR Instrument Approach chart (if one exists) to know the appropriate OBS course to select.
@@ElkoBarbell That makes sense. Thank you for clarifying.
Excellent explanation 💪🏼
Thanks!
Love flight, maybe I'll be able to fly again
Thank you, very much appreciated!
No worries! Thanks for tuning in (pun-intended).
Very interesting, thanks.
You're welcome Ron!
Super nice tuto.. best i've found.. greetings from Belgium !

Thank you!!
Awesome 😎
Well done sir!
Thanks Edward! Glad you enjoyed this.
Thank you.
Nicely done sir 👍🙏🏻 Stay safe and Happy Landings! Have subscribed 🇬🇧🇺🇸✈️
Great video 👌🛩
Thanks! VOR technology is simple yet fascinating. I love the history behind it.
@@BradySkye I did my ppl (uk) in 2014 and it lapsed 4 years ago so I've just had my first reintroduction flight today and swatting up on radio nav incase my instructor asked for it on my skills test!
super informative video for an armchair pilot like me. thank you so much!
Good to hear that! You are very welcome. Thanks for stopping by : )
Thanks great clear and concise. Im off to try haha. Have a sub.
Thank you so much for this video buddy, I will definitely subscribe me now to your channel, it helped me a lot to understand the way it works and will also help me pass the exam ! cheers from Colombia
Haven’t even got ms flight sim yet and probably just going to use gps but found this a great video anyway! Subbed
lol Yeah GPS has taken over. Thanks for the sub Martin!
Thanks.
Thanks good video
Glad you liked it. Thanks a lot.
Long ago I would go into flight similar and just put in some numbers that it understood as a location. And start it. Then use the VOR's to find out where I am! With 2 VOR'S I can draw lines out from them and where they meet is where I am. I did that for a long time before I started flight training!
Great tutorial. What application did you use in the video to show how things work? Looks like a great practice/learning tool.
Thanks Greg. It's a VOR simulator I found. Just Google VOR simulator. I wish it was downloadable software but all I have found so far is one through a web browser / website.
great video. How do you speed up your journey in the simulator? you said you speed it up 4x and 2x. Just wonder how you do that. cheers.
Thanks! Hold down the 'R' key (which stands for rate) then use + and - (which I use on my num pad).
Good job, that's what I cut my teeth on back in the day. Brings back memories.
Very cool Frank. Let's keep the history alive. Many thanks.
just got MSFS 2020; was wondering what those dials do; many thanks
You're very welcome! Happy to help.
How would you find the airport you are looking to land at that’s not right near the VOR ? As you
as you did for St Augustine. Cause I would think if you put in the runway heading you would just fly parallel if you don’t visually see it
You would just fly toward it until you see it.
This is pretty cool! Do people still use VOR in practice today, or have GPS devices taken over at this point?
People DO still use VOR but yes, GPS has definitely taken over. You still have to learn VOR for IFR training. And VOR knowledge is just great to know, especially in the event that a GPS isn't working for some reason.
Vor's make flying super fun. GPS has definitely taken over but knowing how to utilize a Vor does wonders for vfr flying
When I get my PPL and Texas will I be able to primarly use a GPS for Navigation? Or will I have to also learn how to navigate using VOR?
Also great videos here... came from the viral training video.
@@Zay13378 Thanks! For a PPL you don't have to learn VOR. Only if you go for an IFR rating afterward.
Great vid. Where can i find vor in the game or is there a website for
Certain airplanes already have it equipped like the Cessna 172:
Great video, thanks a lot! But where can we find this VOR simulator to use it for our training?
This is one of them: www.luizmonteiro.com/learning_vor_sim.aspx. Just Google VOR Simulator.
@@BradySkye thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, the needed Adobe Flash is out of Service and cant be installed anymore, as you can't get the Installer anymore. So all websites, using Adobe Flash, are dead. Do you maybe also know a different site, which still can be used?
Do you know if the DME works? Especially in the 172, there seems to be no instrument specifically for it and on the display it doesn't look like it's working
DME mostly just works with GPS’s I believe.
@@BradySkye How about VOR's equipped with DME's. In other sims I have no issues
Nice video, but haven’t seen anybody explain what all the knobs do on the ADF tuner. There’s a little turntable knob on the right and I was wondering what that did?
All it does is change the ADF frequency.
How to use vor if we need to fly not directly to a vor station, but between two stations (next to a station)?
That is more advanced and would be good to cover in another video. Unfortunately, VOR technology is becoming increasingly obsolete.
My VOR on my Cessna 152 in the game (Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020), it's not showing any of the TO or FROM flags... I don't know why... I did tune the VOR correctly, and I heard the correct mores code. Can Somebody help me out? Thanks! :)
Great video! I am guessing the 152 lacks DME?
Thank you! The 152 does not have DME, correct.
@@BradySkye Thanks Brady!
Is that chart in the game, or do you have to download it separately?
AirNav
Bro, i need your help. Please clerify it for me. Does not the C152 of mfs 2020 have dme? Does it
Nah. I don’t think it does
How did u get VFR map? (i use xbox version of game)
Not sure on Xbox. I’ve only had the PC version.
👍👍👍👍
hey i struggle to find dme on this cessna 152 setup in my msfs, does anyone know where i can find my dme? thank you
Cessna 152 is most likely not equipped with DME
ah i see thats a new information for me, thanks mate! @@BradySkye
I’m still unsure how you used the VOR to line up with the runway
Omni means omni! It does not mean that the VOR transmitting station is transmitting discrete beams.
Your airplane's receiver can calculate what radial it's on (or trying to find) and can calculate to/from info and it does so by receiving signals that are broadcast in all directions from the VOR transmitting station. Here's the best vid I've found on how this works: ruclips.net/video/tZ2gG1v9Xg8/видео.html
So the runway is also “020?” Or 20? Or 07?
So if you were to plan a flight from Jacksonville FL to Memphis TN, you would need to plot out your route, knowing the direction of travel to the different VORs and all their frequencies.
Correct. At least have some VORs in mind in case your GPS failed ... but really you can just use a GPS. VORs were made before GPS technology. ForeFlight is a very popular app / subscription many people are using. I use it when flying from point A to B as well.
what plane was that at the end?
Cessna 172
Please I need help, I love using VOR navigation so much but I have NEVER seen the to/from flags pop up, please I need help
I'm sorry to hear you are struggling with VOR. What VOR have you tried to capture and at what altitude? It will not work on the ground. You need to be in the air. Try it between 1000 and 3000 feet or so.
@@BradySkye I was at 5500 feet over the sea and the main VOR I was intercepting was HTO (H) 113.6 on Long Island heading from West to East however I looked up my problem a little more, turns out its a glitch that happens when you start the simulator without the planes engine on.
