Hey do you know if sai weapons are legal in the state of Maryland? If so, could you please tell me? Also, I really enjoy your videos. They're awesome😋😋😋😋
I did some study on Sai. Was a the Chinese farming fork.but the Sai ready come to use in about the Tang Dynasty as a police tool as a sword breaker. In japan and china
I took Okinawan Shorin Ryu Matsumura kempo while on Okinawa. Sai was a common instrument of defense.
I am enjoying the lessons online. Just started using sai's. Practicing daily to build strength and tone....Keep up the videos Jake!
Hey Jake. My name is Jake and I've recently subscribed to your channel and really enjoy your videos. You're quite talented and very motivating. I'm no martial artist but for as long as I can remember I've loved the Sai. I do own a pair and because of this video I'm actually going to practice using them. Thank you and keep up the good work. See ya next time!
So how's your training buddy?
Fingers and thumbs should be clear of the yoku when the sais are flipped forwards, that area is for trapping weapons and limbs, if your thumb is there when a staff or a sword comes crashing down on it you won't have a thumb anymore. The whole point of spending 6 hours flipping them would be to ingrain the habit of not putting fingers and thumbs there to prepare for such a confrontation. You might want to learn this stuff before "teaching" it.
I don't know if you guys read this all i want to say is thank you so much . Can't wait for the next video . I saw the other one . I have been training everyday with this kata since the first day I saw the first video . Now knowing more about it ill give it my all to do it the best I can .
The sai has been my wepon for so long. I'll love to lern so much more about it . Again thank's alot .
Just so you know your flip has no power when you flip it without using your fingers. You try to block or strike like that and its going to fly out of your hand. As you are flipping you need to grip it so your strike/block has enough power to either attack or defend.
The Sai is my favorite weapon I even have a tattoo of one

Another cool video. Quick question,,,,What brand are the pants you are wearing? Looks like they are lightweight and have plenty of space in the crotch but are not martial arts pants.
I just got my third pair of Sai . Cool weapon
Where did you get yours?
hey jake, you should look into finding some shuraido brand sai! they are forged ans tempered, and top quality, if you haven't trained with them before, you'll notice a huge difference.
keep up the awesome work!
It's Raphael from tmnt
Every weapon has its advantages and disadvantages. You've mentioned the disadvantages but the advantages are 1. Easy to carry 2. Could be a lethal or non-lethal weapon depending on how we use them and 3) Are able to neutralize the opponent in a tight space, like in a narrow corridor or inside an elevator. Anyway, truly appreciate your video since I just got a pair and will practise them thanks to your guidance.
Raphael training
okinawans were credited with the creation of Sai by historians however due to trade with china, china may have obtained sai however did not use them for war or fighting
Correct me if I'm wrong but they weren't used for farming they were a weapon used by the police in Okinawa to subdue criminals. they're not Sharp. they're not meant to kill just detain
originally a farming tool. think small pitch fork
afterwards later on ... what you said
I prefer the kobudo way of using the sai that ive been taught but i truely believe that every martial art has its own purpose that u cant get from another. ps im trying to start my own martial arts yt channel any tips or pointers

Sai - the best throwable close combat weapons I know of.
Mista Otaku what about a spear
***** I know spears, but I like weapons like this where it's almost like you're barehanded, and yet still a bit stronger.
Mista Otaku meat cleaver.
Heinrich Metzger or rocks. plenty of supply.
Most impractical sai sequence I´ve seen so far. You just made that up, right.
Would certainly seem that way.
Raphael would be impressed with your skills with the sai
#Raphael🐢❤
TMNT!

@@Fetzenwolf ohhh my
It's my understanding that sai were always purpose made weapons, not farm tools for planting rice or axles for wooden carts. Both Chinese and Ryukyu Kingdom police officers used them as truncheons (billyclubs).
They make surprising effective law-enforcement tools. Even in modern settings, there is a baton that resembles the Sai in usage, called the Rapid Rotation Baton by RRB Systems.
They were originally farming tools that were used by peasants and then turned into weapons
You should do all the TMNT weapons as a series. With the movie coming out it would boost your views tenfold
you know what makes a good throwing weapon, old push rods from old engines, check out jonk yards to find them.
Thank you for confirming a theory that I had
it is called iron ruler. This is normal used for measurement. I remember this primitive tool is still used in 70's in my village joiners.
Just want to thank you for all your videos. Clear articulation, camera is in focus, good attitude, and good knowledge. Ignore the haters. You can lead a horse to water, but ... Anyway, sai are the best weapon! I have two pair of sai and love working them. My favorite are my Energy Sai of Agena, handmade by master Carbone. Really fantastic craftsmanship. Well thanks again I look forward to more sai videos :)
not for throwing or anything (obviously) could a sai be made into a good sword? not in the sense of a cut but a lunge or thrusting weapon?
I still have my Sai from 20 years ago, We only did one Kata with them damned if I remember what it was called?, Shito-Ryu style.
AWESOME! Once again some of the best Chinese Kung Fu I've ever seen!
I've had people say chrome is better, and others say carbon was better, what's the difference other then look when it comes to sais ?
+kristopher powell cold steel, lol
Defense from say a right punch, (cha in)you could do a right cross step to your left, doing a right clock wise block to his arm hooking with the cha his hand by pulling forward , much like you would would do with a open hand block ,but your cha hooks the hand. And step to a horse stance with your left foot brining the left cha across the elbow. Then bring him pushing into a arm bar ,with him bent over, slide the cha up his arm , the tip of the cha going to the neck, or face, ( do it carefully on a student ).
I see. So it can also be used to arrest people with an arm lock. Fascinating. I've seen similar moves performed by a Silat (Malaysian/Indonesian martial art) practitioner.
Elektra brought me here and i really wanna learn how to train with a sai
SAİ İS NOT CHİNESE WEAPON SAİ İS ONLY CHİNESE FARMİNG TOOL BUT SAİ İS OKİNAWAN WEAPON.JUST OKİNAWANS USED SAİ FOR WAR.OKİNAWANS CREATE SAİ FORM TONFA FORM... KOBUDO WEAPONS
ferhat kaya you do realize where Okinawa is located right? You don't think it received any outside influence at all? Religion, farming techniques, fighting techniques, tend to flow with trade, and there was a lot of it before Okinawa was made part of Japan. Think about it.
actually the sai was brought to Okinawa, it has was used in many other countries first
White Crane Kung Fu has a Sai system.
Gabriel Lee Yeah that can be said about all of Asia the Sai most likely originated in India but it was exclusively used as a weapon in Okinawa (Japan). Japan did not need to adopt martial arts from china one bit. Chinese martial arts are pretty ineffective compared to Japanese martial arts. Karate, jiujitsu, and judo are competitive sports where as kung fu is really just an act. 🤷🏻♂️
Gabriel Lee Okinawa has been apart of japan for 450 years but it has always been inhabited by the Japanese people/genotype.
There are many people's, who told me, that sai used only in Japan. Mr. Jake, please, tell us, which Kung Fu style use's sai? Thank's.
nice pair of sais u have .. where did u get em ?
thanks for the video
badass!
I'm finding a quality self-defense-ready sais harder to find than demonstration-quality wall hangers. So far, I'm finding the "Shureido" brand to be my favorite candidate.
Rafael(Ninja Turtles),Mileena from Mortal Kombat and martial artist film star Richard Norton used that weapon
Did anyone show you how to do chin na with the cha ?.
Can it really be done? 0.0 now I'm curious, haha.
Was that sai octagon or round and can you give me the name and link to what sai that is
That explains why Raphael is made to be the biggest turtle. It makes sense that he would be given Sai by Splinter.
John2693 Day Splinter said when he said to April O Neil the biography of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Here he said to every turtle and it's names
Donatello; with his simple wooden Bo can dis armed any adversaries
Raphael No sword on earth can withstand his Sai
Leonardo his swordsmanship is unmatched
Michelangelo Master of the wirling Nunchakus
And that they became The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
That is what I told some Kung Fu Masters and they ridiculed me. I would throw the Sai to my opponents feet! I should make a respond video using my fake crappy Sai. Hopefully I can get me some real combat Sai. The first technique is my very favorite technique and I only use my weapons for real combat not for showing off.
Mauricio M The Sai isn't for throwing its a defensive weapon Kata is Okinawan/Japanese the Sai is a kobudo weapon not kung fu Jake is a fake
i found old sai in our garden !
I'm so happy to have sai but the problem is it's just one sai for one hand :(
Awesome vid Jake!!! don't forget the nunchucks video you promised me a few days ago. Thanks Jake
Thanks Jake! Really good video, lots of good information and details on the weapon and the form! Looking forward to see more! :)
Nice video (like always), keep it up! We love your weapons videos.
And I practice with mine everyday I need to get another pair though
After 6 years anyone still alive ? Say hi here
Seriously - Why would a sensible warrior disarm themselves by throwing their weapon away? Even if there was a chance of striking the opponent, it's not 100%.
It's crazy that you have such a huge following with such poor technique, skill or advice.
I believe that, like many newer forms of Kung fu, most of these techniques are used for demonstration rather than self-defense. Older styles of Kung fu tend to be more suited to self-defense because they aren’t as telegraphed as the more modern versions. Other martial arts like karate and taekwondo also tend to appear more suitable for self-defense because they (theoretically) evolved from older styles of Kung fu.
@@MiloTheBushCat Spot on
Correct me if I am wrong; was the Chinese Sai or Cha longer than the Japanese Sai?
When can you guys make another video showing some new move ?
those hooked swords are good.
How would I use this to farm? Is it just stab the ground? Or like, do I stab and drag it along to till the soil?
the arms (Yoku) each have a tip (Tsume) that would be used to drag rows in the soil, then the center arm (monouchi) would be inserted by its tip (saki) into the dirt to create a pit to place the seed in.
Jake, liked the video and would like to see the more advanced moves with the sai. A question for you, do you also train with the escrima sticks? Thanks for the great videos
how long did you pratice martial arts
Can you make more sai video's? Like exercise, real hitting, blocking, striking and stuff like that :D Raphael ftw!
I have hunted for a good pair of Sai. I have my old chrome ones, which are nice, but doubt their functionality in combat.
Stainless steel are all right for a hand to hand fight.

Wrong. Sai are never sharp. They were used also by Okinawan and Japanese police to catch criminals for that reason. Sai permit to catch and trust, without instant kill risk. You can kill with a pair or a single sai, of course, but the greatness of this weapon is that it's unsharpened. Of course you can sharp the edges, but that's not traditional, it would be only brutal, since its primarily usage would be for killing and severely injuring.
Video của bạn thật hay cảm ơn bạn
There was no evidence that Sai was any farming tools. But even today a 3 pointed spear was an object in Hindu temple. Probably this spear was brought to Malay archipelago as weapon and religious objects by hindu traders. This weapon than evolved to sai/tekpi/sao/trisula. It then reached Japan via trade too. The Japanese used it quite defensively. But in some silat form it was used aggressively.
The Sai is one of my favorite weapons. It has so many purposes from attacking, blocking, and countering. Glad that I have a pai at home. Love your videos Sifu Jake Mace.
The Sai..A deadly weapon. About 10 years ago I was in a Master's Weapon class in Austin Texas. The Sai master was an Asian man no more than 5 feet 2 inches tall and about 100 pounds. At the time I was thinking "You got to be kidding". He asked for 3 volunteers from the class and gave them each a wooden sword. Each person would get 3 strikes at him taking turns. He said that the reason for 3 strikes was that a master swordsman would only need 2 strikes to "size him up" and that the 3rd strike would be a "kill strike". The first 2 students, he broke their swords on the first strike and the 3rd person he disarmed the sword on the 2nd strike. He did this by catching the swords between the long and short prongs of the sai and twisting the sword quickly.. Then he took the biggest student in the class, a guy that was about 6 foot 3 inches and around 250 pounds of pure muscle and handed him a 3 foot sausage and asked him to swing it at him like a baseball bat. At the time I thought this was ridiculous until the first swing where the little guy stepped into the swing, blocked it and turned the Sai so that little prong of the sai stuck into the sausage and he ripped the end of it off. He said "if leg, stick in at Achilles tendon and tear off. If arm put between 2 bones (of forearm) the short prong and twist" . So basically you blocked with the long center prong and slid the arm/leg along until it stuck on the pointed little prong and then twist. I walked away from that class completely confident that if I had my Sai and was ever attacked by a person carrying a 3 foot sausage that I would know what to do! Actually I learned alot of respect for the Sai and saw how a little person could hold their own against a big guy and inflict a lot of damage with a set of Sai using a block, gouge and twist set.
Taichi master how does the story end?
InterrobangActivate A couple of things I've learned since that class. 1. He picked the biggest person in the class for a reason..He told him to swing the sausage like a baseball bat for a reason. The big guy would wind up like a baseball player and telegraph his swing from a mile away giving the little guy plenty of time to react to the swing. The Sai in the hands of a master is a really, really dangerous weapon! 2. There are some little "bad-ass" fighters out there that you would have NO CLUE what they were capable of doing just by looking at them. There was another time when I hit a 7th degree black belt Taekwondo Master in the nose while sparring in front of the class. I had no idea that you weren't suppose to do that. Next thing I remember was waking up on the floor with bruised ribs and a black eye. Quit the class right after that. Just a little background on me, I've been in the Martial Arts for 45 years so there are many, many stories of how I learned martial arts by getting my "ass handed to me".
Taichi Master
Aha sounds pretty badass. I dont like the sound of that Taekwondo master though. but then again you get what you give. :/
InterrobangActivate Yea, over the years I've learned from a lot of really good technicians who had darkness in their hearts. Most of my instructors have had many fights in the streets where they "proved" their style. I was that guy in class that always asked "Why do it like that". I didn't mean to doubt them, I wanted to know the reason why behind a technique. Back in the old days, they would try the technique on you and the answer was "because it works". Ouch!
The Taekwondo master was from Korea and didn't want to be here in the USA and was drunk a lot. But his taekwondo was exceptional. Too bad his soul was so tormented.
I want to throw out a question: Do you find that a lot of Martial Arts teachers are angry people with dark hearts?
This is why I'm liking Jake Mace. He has a good heart and I've yet to see him angry at anything! AND he answers the WHY behind his moves.
The only thing his video teaches me is that i crave for some Za right about now
How much did these pair of Sais cost you and where did you get it?
Hi jake, I've started to practice paqua a few months ago, I'm embarrassed to ask my master the order of the belts, can you please help me?
Thanks for good video.
whens the next part of this form being posted.?
Where did you get the sai
is there supposed to be more than one attacker
All sai I have seen are expensive. Do you know where cheap sai can be found.
I found several suitable pairs on Etsy priced between 40-60 dollars. The pair Jake uses to demonstrate in the video look like one of several pairs sold on Etsy, which are made of 1025 carbon steel (blackened) and features a fake-leather grip wrap. It really depends on how long you want to search for deals😂.
I don't think that taolu (form) really exists...
I never practiced with the sai, although I'd love to, but still I documented about the basics.
A little question: what kind of strike that first block is supposed to protect yourself against? Because sai are used (both in kobudo and in some kung fu styles, such as white crane) to block with the tip pointing the external side to the forearm, while you are holding it facing the wrong side. Basically this "form"'s block is useful (but I doubt that) only after swing attacks, not direct ones. Plus all of this thing seems to be just a repetition of the same stances, mostly bow and chicken stances, absolutely made up for this video.
Damn dude, seems I'm not the only one who sucks at applying sun tan :P
Wow, so you can actually combine Xing Yi Quan with a pair of sai for self-defense. I've studied your video "Xing Yi Quan for Beginners" extensively. Very helpful. The sai is an amazing weapon, so simple and yet so versatile and powerful.
Also, you might be interested to know that the sai has numerous appearances in media, not just TMNT. It's known by more modern nerds for being used by the comic book antiheroine Elektra. It was also used in The Scorpion King (I think), among others.
Didn't know you could throw a sai
Cool
I practiced it as a ninjutsu student but we never through them
ninjutsu is not practiced it is invented by the ninja if the person is born with the ability.
My crew you don't throw a sai they are a defensive weapon used by OKINAWANS
I have a training manual by an okinawan instructor and he shows how to throw the sai. It's was meant to pin their foot to the ground though how practical that is I have my doubts.
how long are those sais in inches
Love video
You're holding the sais wrong
The sai was actually never meant to be used for stabbing, ancient Okinawan law enforcers used them to beat criminals with
Man! your videos are awesome!!!
how weight your weapon ??
No
You think karate is Chinese too? Or Kobudō?
The original styles of Okinawan Karate originated with a heavy influence from Chinese White Crane Kung Fu.
Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.

great vid thnx I will practice!
Man looks so much like Johny cage
You must have learnt to flip these by watching TMNT, when the shaft is pointing out, your thumb needs to be directly on the cross section, or you'll lose grip or get your thumb crushed by the incoming weapon.
In reverse grip, the shaft is supposed to be tight to the outside of your forearm, otherwise the sai will smash your own forearm when blocking.
First rule of weapons training, lose your ego. Rant over.
Sai originated from okinawa, japan and has nothing to do with kung fu or china
Sai 鐡尺 was ancient Chinese weapons.
