The Sai is often overlooked within the martial arts. The general public is familiar with the Katana since it's featured prominently in film and at most exhibitions profiling Japanese history and culture.
When demonstrated by a master though, the Sai is a phenomenal weapon.

Sai isn't so much of a long-range weapon and it's really hard to block and strike against something as long-range as a bo or katana.

So the sai’s primary purpose was as a truncheon with an optional thrusting point, and a widely upswept hook guard to use for joint manipulation and/or weapon catching. Seems pretty damn agonistically versatile for a farmer’s sowing tool.

half-japanese kid with a mother who loves kendo here, but a lot of "weaponry" from okinawa is stuff that could either be hidden very easily, or passed off as something else because the peasantry weren't allowed weaponry, but needed some way of defending themselves. This is why you see some pretty crazy shit coming from fairly common items in okinawan martial arts. I know its been a couple of years but i thought you might enjoy the historical context!!

The droplets falling gently down on the terrain
Wash away the sorrow, all the stains of time
But there's no memory, it's only dry inside
In the mud and sinking deeper into a peaceful life
And it will come like a flood of pain pouring down on me
And it will not let up until the end is here

Also it's nice to see a big similarity between the techniques here and some of the Medieval dagger vs sword. Shows that warriors the world over had similar thinking and used similar tools in similar ways. To me if a wide range of cultures have basic techniques that are virtually the same and with similar weapons then it is those techniques that have been proven effective in the widest variety of time, situation and level of armor. Thus they are the techniques that any weapons practitioner, despite background, should know well and how to counter.

I found out that you could carry this in Suffolk County in the open which is awesome because my 2nd weapon of choice would benefit choice would be honestly the stainless steel whip because a sword can't cut that either because it's stainless steel as well and you could block with that too but but that's a little bit more you know like coming in with the bat you gotta go on to meet the hand just like the stick you gotta go on you need the stick or you gotta hook the stick down or you block when you go to the knees

I have finished it now and am just editing it but basically it's my own interpretation of the TMNT characters based on my experiences with martial arts and as a teenager. I will probably put it on my blog at some point but due to it's copyright infringing nature, it will most likely not get published unless someone out of the blue gives me permission to do so. So, is your book fiction or non-fiction?

8:12 - 8:16 I can't believe what I just heard. Never have I heard a practitioner say something so insightful. I like this working on the KISS principle ( Keep It Simple Stupid ). Well said sir. Subscribed.

want to know what happens when he use wild and fast slashes with the sword instead of slow choreo

I don't believe you'd see a serious swordsman slashing like you describe. While combat speed is significantly faster, the cuts are still extremely controlled.
The sai is highlighted here for the purpose of instruction for practice, of which you would require a great deal to have even a reasonable chance in this situation. If you do get inside the sword like he shows, you have a reasonable chance to best your opponent.

I was waiting for him to take out the guy squatting next to him. I thought the first rule in martial arts was self preservation...

Why not use two? I'm a big fan of sai, but I've always practiced with two and done kata like Chatan Yara No Sai, and my favorite, Isshan Ryu Kyan No Sai. Is it just for demonstration purposes, or do you like having a free hand?

Hope for two sai, but be prepared and train for only one, or none. ; )

Traditionally, one would carry two, or even three.
