I thought you would get a Viper for it.
The Superbird being "unfinished" does not really surprise me. Mopars were soo hot in 2006/07 and climbing when the restoration of that car started, even missing its original drivetrain a hemi 4 speed aero car with a 'lil racing pedigree would have warranted a big money restoration. A restoration that made alot less sense to finish off after the '08 crash with either the money drying up or the car bleeding too much value and sold to an investor in '09 who did nothing with it but wait for it to appreciate into a profit.
ruclips.net/video/2GNpcsCUQvs/видео.html
The whole real vs fake thing is so funny to me. It's like a kit car Cobra versus an original. The better car if done up right would be the modern kit Cobra. If you want the experience of what an original was like then by all means spend million/s on one. If you want the better car to drive you can spend 5% of that.
It more like you are buying a story versus buying a better vehicle.
@@discgolfdetails9889 5% isnt going to build you a very good kit car either. I've been there, and 5% isn't a realistic number at ALL.
@@davelowets I've seen used ones sell for 50K. Sure you can spend 100-150K, but it's still probably worth 50K done.

That wasn't a knife. Watch JohnRoss and Gabe's shenanigans working on the Geo Tracker to see some funny bits with knives.
The issues on the superbird are extremely common. As someone that has worked on a ton of restored cars I found that a large number of shops either lacked the knowledge to repair the vehicles they restored they could make them look pretty but that is where it stopped. The other scenario I came across was owners electing to do the finishing to save money and would get it good enough to go to the parade but never finished things. I couldn't count the number of aftermarket a/c systems and little stuff like electric windows and seat controls that never worked.
Yep, pay for cosmetics... and tinker at home to finish it.

*raises hand*
I worked in a classic car dealer as the ONLY mechanic for a pool of about 50 cars, 30 in and 30 out a month. I'm surprised that Superbird wasn't sold by my ex-boss. Specialized in '70 Chevelle SS, tried to not touch anything else unless it made a fat profit. Which meant it was a cheap piece of shit with lipstick on it. Old American cars post restoration are the worst things in the world to work on, it's so rare to find them done right and proper. It's funny that the survivor cars he rarely bought were actually the best cars out of the lot. Says a lot about most restoration jobs...
He complains. Way too much..these are small problems ,indicative of mediocre mechanics . You have way too much money I say. I’d never work for you..
You could not have said it better, it looked fine cosmetically but few things didn’t work.
I’m surprised Hoovie didn’t separate this video into two separate videos lol, these two are awesome standalone video topics

@@Local11Sam i was just being a smartass
Hoovie, my Grandfather gave me some really good advice: "You never quit paying for cheap!" Do the valve guides now since you have already paid for the engine out!
On the superbird I think they ran out of $$$ during the restomod. So they just threw it back together hastily because the money ran out. That explain good paint (early on the restoration) but bad panel gaps on the nose cone (toward the end).
That’s a good theory
Those late 60's early 70's Dodges and Chrysler Vehicles never had good panel Fittment even when they were new.
Totally agree. Not hooking up the horn/speedometer cable and driving with that awful noise from the air compressors indicate someone fell out of love with it.
@@MJTAUTOMOTIVE Which Yankee car manufacturer has ever had good flush, gap, fit and finish?
They are infamous for the opposite.
I also think an owner may have burned a bridge with a shop previously and they just didn’t bother to finish it properly.
When Tyler picked up the cam belt pulley and put it back in a different place. Mechanics pet hate 😂. Daniel is a great mechanic and credit to the wizards shop
I wanna see a video where The Wizard buys a beater and Hoovie has to fix it
Wizard: can't find the coolant leak
Daniel-san: fixes the coolant leak in 5 minutes
Also replace those bronze guides WHILE you're in there, the engine is already out, now's the time to do all the things.
Un-hooking the speedo cable is an old farmer's trick, keeps the mileage low at trade in time!
With that car's history mileage is irrelevant. Just weird it was left unhooked
more likely the car was half-assed put together and sat
Is the speedo even tied to the odometer?
It was fully disclosed that the car is a partial re-body. Do you SERIOUSLY think a few extra thousand miles would destroy the value? And, Mr. Expert, if the seller was TRULY trying to deceive he would have reconnected the speedo cable prior to sale. Why would he leave evidence behind. Next time try THINKING before you open your mouth.
Nothing particularly to do with farmers, this has been going on since speedometers were first fitted to vehicles. Used to be able to wind the mileage back with an electric drill in reverse.
So long as we’re spending Hoovie’s money, I vote for swapping the front suspension back to torsion bars.
Torsion bars is what made Mopars handle better than the comp back then, I love Mopars from the sixties and seventies for that reason!
No, modern springs/shocks are far superior.
Sad thing about this Hoovie is that within 4-6 months that 5.9 will be leaking again from the same places. I don't know a single person that owns a first, second or third generation Cummins that doesn't have a leak from the timing cover or oil pan. Just the nature of the engine...it rattles itself apart without mercy.
It's comical that people who have no experience or interaction with that specific car are all of a sudden experts because they can use google
I would like to see how many hours are on he diesel. turn the key to the on position (engine not running) and hold the trip odometer button down for about 10 seconds to display the engine hours.
Yes please! Hah. That must be tracked in an ECU though right? Wonder if it has ever been replaced.

@@RandomGuyDan that doesnt make a good video though , this guy seems to do things weird or backwards but its all part of his youtube channel.....
The engine will have to come out again in 5/6 years to do the belts again. They’re betting that the guides will last that long.
I would be inclined to do the valve guides as well. Peace of mind and all for him, but mainly because it's a + for when he goes to sell it so he can say it's fully sorted and appeal to a wider group of potential buyers.

Hoovies 348 is proof that you need to daily drive exotic cars (except McLarens) for them to be reliable and work properly most of the time....you can't let any car just sit stagnant no matter how special it is.
You shouldn't daily drive any exotic car's, they are really not designed to be driven every day. Best thing with them is to run them up on a weekly basis and that's it. Mclaren car's are basically not a car to be driven much at all. Even the famous McLaren f1 road car with a BMW engine after five thousand miles went wrong. Jaguar Xk120 even says should not be driven more than 200 miles a year when it was new.

Does that Dodge’s Cummins engine have the “killer dowel pin” that backs out and wedges itself in the timing gears? If it does, did you install the safety retainer?
This! Came to the comments looking for this. Timing cover is off. Do the killer dowel rod fix. No reason not to.

Tyler has a squirrel moment. "It's a real super . . . you got the horn fixed?"
As a b-body Mopar owner with Rallye gauges. The speedo cables don't clip in correctly. I think that BRUTAL fixed suspension rattled it out.
Nobody cares about shaving miles off of a restomod, rebodied racecar with a non numbers matching drivetrain.
People don't go into the steering wheel to fix the horn because the horn buttons (roadrunner logo) are plastic and always break (as Wizard found out).
That thing only gets driven to a car show or two and sits
It would be cool to see hoovie take the super bird to Mark from graveyard carz for an appraisal
Hoovies putting out lots of videos but the content is still

Tyler helps me stay away from buying “ interesting” cars.
Hoovie needs his own car trailer to go with the million-mile Cummings can't think of a better way to rack up the miles than to have a combo to move the stuff that won't move itself.
He has an aluminum car hauler somewhere
I think hoovie is doing what a friend of mine does with his motorcoach. He doesn't have a garage for it so he sends it to the shop in the beginning of winter for repairs so it is heated and covered all winter. Hoovie is doing that with some of his fleet.
The direct gear drive camshaft has been around for a long time. Chevy introduced it on their straight 6 engine in 1929.
Gear driven cams are used often on racing engines.
They probably exceed the NVH standard for gasoline engines. That's why they're not common.
In semi-trucks they are mostly used, even here in germany, where no company wants their engines to run a million kilometers like 30 years before
You also really want to replace the oil pan instead of just replacing the gasket. If there's even a spot of rust on it it will eventually leak. Probably sooner then later. It's a double wall pan so the second there's a spot of rust it rusts out entirely between the two layers.
It’s odd that the Wizard is SO busy and yet he can jump on anything Hoovie brings in.
tells you something.
Watch the VinWiki video with Wizard, he explains the whole thing. He’s no longer a service center and more of a production studio at this point.
Tyler, you should make a super bird T shirt that seas "Its Real"
You should remove all the vaccum reservoirs and pumps. Use electric motors from other model, to the lift mechanism to the headlights. And use an alternator with a vaccum pump, as auxiliary to the brake booster.
The 348 got angry it didn't get the premium garage space it deserves as a Ferrari.
Glad you you found the vins on the Bird, very easy to fake those. Too bad they took a real one and did what they did to it. I don't sweat replaced panels on my old Mopars either. By now unless it was in a barn and never driven they've had some damage repaired over the years.

I would replace the Valve Guides on the Ferrari just to be on the safe side.
That is always an issue doing a job. Since your already in there, how much other stuff do you do while your there. I call them "might as wells". You might as well do the valve guides now. The motors out. Those guides could go a week after you get the car back. Why pay to pull the engine again.

He did pay a little much, but I think with the easy fix on most of the problems the repair bill won't be very high so he still might be doing ok. I think once fully sorted he could still turn a small profit.
@@farangatang yeah, if he hangs on to it for just a little bit, the value will only go up. For sure he will be ok on it. 👍
I've now done a few of those Cummins timing cover leaks. It's actually not the cover itself that leaks, but the seal between the timing case and the block. The gasket squeezes out from between the two and leaves a gap for oil.
If you have it this far apart it really wouldn't make sense not to replace the timing case gasket. All you have to do is remove the cam out the front of the engine, oil pump, water pump, and then the case comes off.
so many comments about the "killer dowel pin"..... Hoovie's truck is a 2004. The killer dowel pin (KDP) was only a problem on 1989 thru 2002 Cummins 5.9 engines. All these people screaming about the KDP are probably Duramunch and Powerstoke fanatics'..!
Ya know, I really like this channel.. being a die hard Mopar guy myself I impressed with the Wizzard and his attitude. Hoovie on the other hand, he's ok.
I love Mopar and I didn't think for a second that was a fake Superbird, I wonder what made people think that it was.
"This 1970 Plymouth Superbird is said to have been crashed in a race in the 1970s, and it was reconstructed with parts sourced from a Road Runner during a three-year refurbishment that concluded in 2009." Other than the vin tags, the rest of the car might be a total reproduction.
There’s a pin that needs to be welded or tighter down in those engines I believe that can b catastrophic if it falls out. Did you get it welded in or bolted down so it lasts for another million miles

RM23R0A158581 is this car. It's a known rebody through the wing car registrations. It was rebodied on a 1969 GTX body. Yes this is a Superbird vin and body numbers placed on a 1969 GTX body. Also your Superbird fender tag has N96 option on it....which mean it has the air grabber hood option... Superbirds did not have that option and yours is the only one with that option code. I would highly suspect (especially after seeing a pic of the fender tag, that piece is a fake tag).
Enjoy the car but quit being fuzzy on the details and pedigree about this car, otherwise your no better than the last owner.

I’d imagine that at a million miles, that was done a service or two ago.
How much does an exotic car cost? Couple hundred grand? Not worth it, they seem pretty junky to me. Not reliable at all, needy is an under statement. Only exotic I'll ever own is a 1/18 scale model. They look awesome, and they don't ever need fixing, cheaper too. Maybe if I had millions of dollars to waste I'd buy a Porsche GT3RS😉. Guess I'm a little jealous too. Lol.😄
There’s still some mysterious smoke surrounding that superbird. So many red flags with that car.
