The two Ferraris are a perfect example of preventative maintenance and actually driving them. The black one even with almost three times the mileage was obviously well maintained and is a much better example mechanically than the yellow one.
That's something that also always worries me when browsing for another Classic (that I don't buy but wish I could); You have 50 Year old Vehicles with extremely low mileage. Every time I bought a 'low mileage' one, I put the mileage in repair cost back in because it parked itself to death basically. Never going for anything low-mileage anymore!
What i like about Hoovie is, that he gives every car a chance... No talking about reselling the car unfixed. Ok, if you have the carwizard as a mechanic, he can be sure it will be done properly and for a reasonable price.

@@Nash_Nismo F355s steering rack is built by TRW who built for dozens of manufacturers. Just a matter of wasting time till you find a kit that fits. Volvos 960 does. Gates 350910 is the kit. By the way, I rebuilt it myself at home, no need to spend several grand in a new one. Unless the internals are scored or really damaged it’s just a matter of replacing all the seals included in the rebuilding kit. The worst part is taking out the steering rack, difficult and time consuming even with a lift and tools.
Don't go with a used steering rack... you might save $2K now, but who knows how long that'll last and then you'll be dumping more money into labor. Better to just get a new one.

If the check engine light was burned out or disconnected, then it wouldn't light when the ignition was turned on and they'd surely not have missed that.

Hauling down the road with your handbrake on? You can't open the roof on a F355 without the handbrake being on. It's part of the system logic in the Roof ECU. The roof problem seems to be old elastics. The second crossmember seems to be folding down instead of up. It's a really common problem on F355 Spiders. $10 for heavy duty elastic strips and if you're good with a needle and thread, nothing for labour. Also, there are lots of engine faults which don't generate the Check Engine light on the F355. I had one on mine recently (and my light works).

It’s probably a smart move to do a warm compression check at some point as well, just to make sure the valve guides and piston rings are in good shape, since they too are known for being problematic, especially on earlier F355s.
I love the strakes on the 348. In a previous house we had a double driveway with one side running through to the back yard and the other side ending with the wall of my workshop. My plan was to paint the life size rear of a 348 on the wall of the workshop so we could park one of the cars behind a Ferrari. I never managed to get my art skills up to the level of my dreaming. :)
There's no such thing as a "cheap" exotic car. You'll pay one way or another.

after having watched a lot of Hoovies I have concluded that most of the upscale cars are utter garbage and an endless headache. Just the pain of maintaining it makes my head spin.
They're not garbage, they are beautiful. Hoovie always buys the worst possible example so that there is content to be made. And yes, classic Ferraris are going to be expensive, they're not for your average driver
i'm not sure . I guess the main reason instead is that many people buy those cars and neglect the maintenance , maybe because they're short of money (because they spent it all to buy the car in the first place) . if you do regular maintenance on regular intervals it will not be "cheap" but it will avoid disasters . That poor ferrari was clearly neglected . You cannot put 2 screws on an underbody panel when it needs 6 or 8 . That would be a cheap fix but on the other hand could couse expensive troubles .

I wonder how much it would cost to have the belly pan replaced because so much of it was worn away that I would be worried that when driving at speed that air could get in there and damage other things. Just looked it up. The panel costs $500.

Pulling the engine is ABSOLUTELY the correct way to do things. You will save a ton on labor compared to fighting the engine bay and will be able to do a lot of preventative service while you are in there. Factor in a few thousand dollars more for unexpected stuff but in the end you will have a fully serviced 355 that is ready to drive.
I had to do a bunch of stuff like this on a 4th gen F-body (plugs/wires, replace every seal and gasket as it was leaking everything from every orifice, rebuild the A/C system) and it was easier to drop the engine/trans on the cross member than fight that goddam engine bay. I said to people, "it's pretty much the same as a Ferrari..." I dropped it onto some wheel dollies, kicked it out into the driveway then degreased/pressure washed it, that thing was gross... Rest of the job was a pleasure. Parts are waaaay cheaper than a Ferrari, too so that's the way to go if you want the Ferrari experience without the cost.
@@runner3033 On any exotic I always follow the rule of 3. If you need to do 3 or more jobs in the engine bay you pull the motor. It has ALWAYS been the better way.

Still have tires to do and probably should do all fluids as well. So add a few thousand more for that. Changing the top to manual does fix the hole in the top. It's a Ferrari. It should be a fun series to watch though as you bring this car back. So thank you for buying!

To fix the top you need to replace the two bungee straps on the sides. They pull the central metal bar to the back when closing the top. If they are loose the metal bar will get stuck in the mechanism.
You wont see a Ferrari roll back the odo. You will always see low mile perfect examples of a beautiful classic car. And low mile examples of an abused classic car. Its easy to spot both

Low mile cars mean at some stage in its life it sat alot. That would be cause of leaks everywhere. But i would say the car has exchanged hands a few times at cheap prices, which it why cosmetically its quite rough. Laughed how the car dealer was pretending it needed " a tidy up".

For the lack of Check Engine Light - you may want to confirm someone didn't pull the bulb. On my '97 355 GTS, if I manually operate the exhaust valves, it causes a check engine light. Since a lot of people like to run these with the valves open all the time, many just remove the bulb!

With that engine misfire not actuating the CEL you might want to check to see if the CEL light is working. Usually the first start position of the key will illuminate most warning lights to show they're working. Most cars have the CEL bulb hard wired but not all of them so someone might have pulled it or popped the bulb to hide a CEL. Seen if before. A scan will tell you for sure.
Actually Wizard said something at the beginning, that sorta hints at the exhaust maybe not having backpressure. He jokingly mentioned it sounded like a beat up LS truck. Most people who buy cheap 5.3 trucks *always* hack too much of the exhaust off, and end up losing back pressure. Thats when you hear the "misfire" at op-temp idle. They all sound like that, once the exhaust it hacked off. I bet a simple gasket going to that capriso muffler will solve that backpressure issue. Those same trucks also never have codes, but clearly aren't running right.

you forgot the top is ripped, add another $3000 for a top in addition to converting it to manual. It needs new tires also, another $1500. Also, spend the extra $2K and get the NEW rack, not a used one. You know that used one will leak in a year also so just spend the little extra and do it right.
I made the mistake of buying a really crappy Miata, which needed literally a new everything....all of the combined costs don't even come close to the bill *just to fix* this Ferrari. Which is why I now walk into my garage and say to myself "At least I'm not Hoovie" :)
I regret not buying a 355 several years ago when you could get a decent one for about $35k. I did buy a less expensive 911 that has doubled in price since then, so I didn't completely screw up.

While negotiating with a dealer on a nice 996, I was looking through Craigslist and found a "bring a trailer" 996 locally. It was an early build manual coupe with 89k miles. The problem with it was it had electrical issues. When I looked at the car, I realized the issues were likely due to a bad ground. I bought it for $11,500 and towed it home. It took me a couple of hours to find the bad ground and fix it. I did have to replace the alternator, because the bad ground killed it. It has been a great car and would probably cost at least twice as much now.

Probably made a better choice. You can actually drive the Porsche whenever and wherever you want without risking a 20k repair bill. Definitely save on maintenance cost.
Well, IF I had money to buy a 1/1 scale Ferrari, and it had all those issues, I'd go with a brand new rack. 2k$ more to make sure you don't have to deal with badly rebuilt or other issues, I think it's worth it.

Engine out service on a 355. Santa brought Wizard his Christmas present, and Hoovie a fat lump of coal. Not to mention the 348 having to be done next year. Hoovies wallet is always taking one for the team to keep us entertained.
Well, its a BIG ouch, but that car is so worth saving. There is one of these running around where I live, same color and a convertible.... It is glorious every time I see it and HEAR it! And you confirmed it for me, the one running around here has that exhaust too, and the goose bumps are REAL TOO! Hoovie is just asking for more drama by buying a used steering rack. My family went through the same thing with swapping in and out used transmissions for years until we got one that worked. The fortunate part is that we did the work ourselves, so no paying someone else..

The thing with the 355 though is the low mileage, even with an expensive repair bill, bought cheap, he ought to be in it for a reasonable amount where he could flip it. I would imagine that steering rack at $5,000 is not really different than a $500 rack! Absolutely unbelievable! What a joke! Compared to the cost of the car new, it is pure junk!
When talking about the next cheapest 355, those would be the F1 transmission. Manuals would be even more pie in the sky. So Hoovie really has found a bargain even with the repair costs. However, he should really fit a removable hardtop, unless he wants many more repair bills for the soft top.
Love 348's.... As much as I might like newer, more sophisticated sports, and supercars, the 348 is actually best suited for my style, and personal expectations of a car. Honestly, a 348 style, and weight sportscar, with a 5 speed, and only 200 hp, is a blast to drive, so a 1994 348 is just right for me.
Let's be real here for a second...a street car that requires the engine to come out every 5-6 years as part of normal maintenance just isn't a well-designed automobile. It's not even a question of can you afford it or not...it's just bad engineering. And this is coming from a 300ZX guy!
Would it be nice if the engine didn't need to come out to do belts? Yes. That said, Ferrari did design it to come out. It's really not THAT hard to pull it because of this. Basically it just means that every ~5 years you service the car once and that's it.
Scott from Ratarossa was able to do it by pulling the fuel tank. Still involved but likely a lot better than dropping the engine and impacting the systems.
1st try a chemical additive to soften power steering rack seals to stop leaks. Worked on my two cars. If not, buy a seal kit and rebuild the rack / pinion oneself.
The two Ferraris are a perfect example of preventative maintenance and actually driving them.
The black one even with almost three times the mileage was obviously well maintained and is a much better example mechanically than the yellow one.
Driving a vehicle is great for it. Semi trucks are running 60 hours a week every week and last for at least a million miles.
Worst thing for a car is to just sit.

That's something that also always worries me when browsing for another Classic (that I don't buy but wish I could); You have 50 Year old Vehicles with extremely low mileage. Every time I bought a 'low mileage' one, I put the mileage in repair cost back in because it parked itself to death basically. Never going for anything low-mileage anymore!
What i like about Hoovie is, that he gives every car a chance... No talking about reselling the car unfixed. Ok, if you have the carwizard as a mechanic, he can be sure it will be done properly and for a reasonable price.

Buy a steering rack seal kit for a Volvo 960. It’s the same a the f355. I rebuilt mine that way. Just 50 dollars in parts.
First Ferraris then Aston Martins...Volvo is a supercar savior.

@@Nash_Nismo F355s steering rack is built by TRW who built for dozens of manufacturers. Just a matter of wasting time till you find a kit that fits. Volvos 960 does. Gates 350910 is the kit. By the way, I rebuilt it myself at home, no need to spend several grand in a new one. Unless the internals are scored or really damaged it’s just a matter of replacing all the seals included in the rebuilding kit. The worst part is taking out the steering rack, difficult and time consuming even with a lift and tools.

The 355 is all about those heads. Five valves per cylinder. Oh, and that glorious sound!
1. "Check engine" lamp is either burned out or disconnected.
2. Top linkage is half destroyed because some previous nimrod tried to open the roof
while hauling down the road.
If the check engine light was burned out or disconnected, then it wouldn't light when the ignition was turned on and they'd surely not have missed that.

If the Check Engine light isn't coming on for THAT obvious Code, then something is up.
Hopefully Dave does run the scan at the least...
Hauling down the road with your handbrake on? You can't open the roof on a F355 without the handbrake being on. It's part of the system logic in the Roof ECU. The roof problem seems to be old elastics. The second crossmember seems to be folding down instead of up. It's a really common problem on F355 Spiders. $10 for heavy duty elastic strips and if you're good with a needle and thread, nothing for labour.
Also, there are lots of engine faults which don't generate the Check Engine light on the F355. I had one on mine recently (and my light works).

Considering the number of cars he fixes up and purchases, saviny 1000-2000 dollars every time for some additional aesthetics would add up quickly to enough money to buy another car.

Funny how now I think the 348 looks better. Love the strakes, the grilles and the mirrors of the 348, and the 348 wheels are just awesome
It’s probably a smart move to do a warm compression check at some point as well, just to make sure the valve guides and piston rings are in good shape, since they too are known for being problematic, especially on earlier F355s.
I love the strakes on the 348. In a previous house we had a double driveway with one side running through to the back yard and the other side ending with the wall of my workshop. My plan was to paint the life size rear of a 348 on the wall of the workshop so we could park one of the cars behind a Ferrari. I never managed to get my art skills up to the level of my dreaming. :)

If you search Ferrari F355 rack and pinion rebuild, there's a step by step in a Ferrari forum.....it's a TRW rack, and the seal kit is $30
after having watched a lot of Hoovies I have concluded that most of the upscale cars are utter garbage and an endless headache. Just the pain of maintaining it makes my head spin.
They're not garbage, they are beautiful. Hoovie always buys the worst possible example so that there is content to be made. And yes, classic Ferraris are going to be expensive, they're not for your average driver

i'm not sure . I guess the main reason instead is that many people buy those cars and neglect the maintenance , maybe because they're short of money (because they spent it all to buy the car in the first place) . if you do regular maintenance on regular intervals it will not be "cheap" but it will avoid disasters . That poor ferrari was clearly neglected . You cannot put 2 screws on an underbody panel when it needs 6 or 8 . That would be a cheap fix but on the other hand could couse expensive troubles .

Pulling the engine is ABSOLUTELY the correct way to do things. You will save a ton on labor compared to fighting the engine bay and will be able to do a lot of preventative service while you are in there. Factor in a few thousand dollars more for unexpected stuff but in the end you will have a fully serviced 355 that is ready to drive.
I had to do a bunch of stuff like this on a 4th gen F-body (plugs/wires, replace every seal and gasket as it was leaking everything from every orifice, rebuild the A/C system) and it was easier to drop the engine/trans on the cross member than fight that goddam engine bay. I said to people, "it's pretty much the same as a Ferrari..."
I dropped it onto some wheel dollies, kicked it out into the driveway then degreased/pressure washed it, that thing was gross... Rest of the job was a pleasure. Parts are waaaay cheaper than a Ferrari, too so that's the way to go if you want the Ferrari experience without the cost.
@@runner3033 On any exotic I always follow the rule of 3. If you need to do 3 or more jobs in the engine bay you pull the motor. It has ALWAYS been the better way.

Still have tires to do and probably should do all fluids as well. So add a few thousand more for that. Changing the top to manual does fix the hole in the top. It's a Ferrari. It should be a fun series to watch though as you bring this car back. So thank you for buying!

To fix the top you need to replace the two bungee straps on the sides. They pull the central metal bar to the back when closing the top. If they are loose the metal bar will get stuck in the mechanism.
Can't expect not to put 10-20k into a bargain lot 355. That car was driven hard and put away wet.
I can imagine the old 348 owner going "yeah it's been reliable, I spent 6 figures getting it there!"

The 355 looks like an odometer rollback. No way the underside of the car and drivetrain is that bad for how few miles are on it.

Low mile cars mean at some stage in its life it sat alot. That would be cause of leaks everywhere. But i would say the car has exchanged hands a few times at cheap prices, which it why cosmetically its quite rough. Laughed how the car dealer was pretending it needed " a tidy up".

Tyler my friend, bitter experience and several rimmings later have taught me if you’re spending 13k go for the new rack. Do it once, do it right. Absolutely adore that 355 by the way. I got a ride in one at a family bbq when I was 16 through the English Hertfordshire country roads and I basically wet myself, been hooked since. Best bit she was 60 years old and drove it like she stole in heels 👠😍
Idk, for $1500 more I’d go with the new steering rack… although I suppose he won’t hang on to it long enough to make that worth it.

For the lack of Check Engine Light - you may want to confirm someone didn't pull the bulb. On my '97 355 GTS, if I manually operate the exhaust valves, it causes a check engine light. Since a lot of people like to run these with the valves open all the time, many just remove the bulb!

With that engine misfire not actuating the CEL you might want to check to see if the CEL light is working. Usually the first start position of the key will illuminate most warning lights to show they're working. Most cars have the CEL bulb hard wired but not all of them so someone might have pulled it or popped the bulb to hide a CEL. Seen if before. A scan will tell you for sure.

Actually Wizard said something at the beginning, that sorta hints at the exhaust maybe not having backpressure.
He jokingly mentioned it sounded like a beat up LS truck. Most people who buy cheap 5.3 trucks *always* hack too much of the exhaust off, and end up losing back pressure. Thats when you hear the "misfire" at op-temp idle. They all sound like that, once the exhaust it hacked off.
I bet a simple gasket going to that capriso muffler will solve that backpressure issue.
Those same trucks also never have codes, but clearly aren't running right.
they sure love to throw codes when the airbag sensor always goes out.

you forgot the top is ripped, add another $3000 for a top in addition to converting it to manual. It needs new tires also, another $1500. Also, spend the extra $2K and get the NEW rack, not a used one. You know that used one will leak in a year also so just spend the little extra and do it right.
I made the mistake of buying a really crappy Miata, which needed literally a new everything....all of the combined costs don't even come close to the bill *just to fix* this Ferrari. Which is why I now walk into my garage and say to myself "At least I'm not Hoovie" :)
As an owner and the repair guy I found working on Ferrari’s 348- 430 very easy to work on most people are just scared or worried about the price.
348 definitely has the most beautiful front end of the two

I regret not buying a 355 several years ago when you could get a decent one for about $35k. I did buy a less expensive 911 that has doubled in price since then, so I didn't completely screw up.

While negotiating with a dealer on a nice 996, I was looking through Craigslist and found a "bring a trailer" 996 locally. It was an early build manual coupe with 89k miles. The problem with it was it had electrical issues. When I looked at the car, I realized the issues were likely due to a bad ground. I bought it for $11,500 and towed it home. It took me a couple of hours to find the bad ground and fix it. I did have to replace the alternator, because the bad ground killed it. It has been a great car and would probably cost at least twice as much now.

Probably made a better choice. You can actually drive the Porsche whenever and wherever you want without risking a 20k repair bill. Definitely save on maintenance cost.
Well, IF I had money to buy a 1/1 scale Ferrari, and it had all those issues, I'd go with a brand new rack. 2k$ more to make sure you don't have to deal with badly rebuilt or other issues, I think it's worth it.

The 355's steering is transformed with non-airbag (Euro/ROW 2.7) steering wheel; it really transforms the feel (the airbag acts as a mass-damper)
That ugly airbag steering wheel is pretty much the only ugly part on the car. His 456GT has the Euro steering wheel which is lovely.

Engine out service on a 355. Santa brought Wizard his Christmas present, and Hoovie a fat lump of coal. Not to mention the 348 having to be done next year. Hoovies wallet is always taking one for the team to keep us entertained.

Well, its a BIG ouch, but that car is so worth saving. There is one of these running around where I live, same color and a convertible.... It is glorious every time I see it and HEAR it! And you confirmed it for me, the one running around here has that exhaust too, and the goose bumps are REAL TOO! I think you now have my favorite pair of Ferrari cars now, just personally, I rather have hard tops lol.
Hoovie is just asking for more drama by buying a used steering rack. My family went through the same thing with swapping in and out used transmissions for years until we got one that worked. The fortunate part is that we did the work ourselves, so no paying someone else..

When talking about the next cheapest 355, those would be the F1 transmission. Manuals would be even more pie in the sky. So Hoovie really has found a bargain even with the repair costs. However, he should really fit a removable hardtop, unless he wants many more repair bills for the soft top.

Love 348's.... As much as I might like newer, more sophisticated sports, and supercars, the 348 is actually best suited for my style, and personal expectations of a car. Honestly, a 348 style, and weight sportscar, with a 5 speed, and only 200 hp, is a blast to drive, so a 1994 348 is just right for me.
Let's be real here for a second...a street car that requires the engine to come out every 5-6 years as part of normal maintenance just isn't a well-designed automobile. It's not even a question of can you afford it or not...it's just bad engineering. And this is coming from a 300ZX guy!
Yeah its weird that Ferrari thought this was a good idea.

Would it be nice if the engine didn't need to come out to do belts? Yes. That said, Ferrari did design it to come out. It's really not THAT hard to pull it because of this. Basically it just means that every ~5 years you service the car once and that's it.
Scott from Ratarossa was able to do it by pulling the fuel tank. Still involved but likely a lot better than dropping the engine and impacting the systems.
Ferrari owners pride themselves on repair / maintenance bills...

1st try a chemical additive to soften power steering rack seals to stop leaks. Worked on my two cars. If not, buy a seal kit and rebuild the rack / pinion oneself.
