I taught Kindergarten for 4 years. By the end of the year, you forget how chaotic the beginning of the year is. Every year, I was SHOCKED by how hard the first few days are. LOL. They literally know nothing.
I've taught several grades and kindergarten is the MOST exhausting of them all. My happy place is now First Grade...it's the best of both worlds :) When I taught kinder we did all of our major teaching, especially Literacy and Math, at the beginning of the day. We did our Science and Social Studies at the end of the day.
Our kindergarteners still have a rest time after lunch. Them they do play time after that - math games are a good end of the day thing too. They’ll get there…slow and steady.
Hi Madison! Kindergarten teacher here. The first 6 weeks of kindergarten are always brutal but then it just magically snaps into place. We do Heggerty in the mornings but don't start until week 2. I tried it week 1 before & even in the morning they couldn't even focus. Once it's becomes more routine, they will get it & start doing all the hand motions & everything with you. I always say how kindergarten land is a special place because no one understands until you teach it. 😂 I love your vlogs & look forward to many more. 🎉
For littles ELA & Phonics in the Morning & math , social studies and science at the end. They are more focused in the morning and after lunch they are over it so lots of movement
Heggerty in the mornings, play time or play-based learning in the afternoon. SEL practice. Activities that are more fun and engaging, but don't require intense concentration and allow them to just be kids.
This year I start work at 8:30 and leave at 4:30 - bit I get to school a half hour early so I can do something’s to get ready for the day (so I don’t take my work home this year)….. Like you said - do what you have to to keep the work at home and you can go home and relax….. I am soooo happy you had a wonderful first week of school….. 😍👏👏👏
Try Tack-It on the name plates. They will lay flat and not move unless you peel them off. They will stick over and over. We use it in our classroom for everything.
I used to teach TK full days.. the kids by the time it was after lunch we’re so zoned out! It’s such a long day for the littles… What helped was definitely a “quiet time” in the afternoon. It doesn’t look like nap time but can look similar. Individual time is also a great option where there are options but is great for a student “choice” and is self managed. Goodluck this year!
My daughter is in 1st grade this year, but I remember last year how absolutely exhausted she was after getting home from school! Our public school is half day kindergarten (less then 3 hours a day) so we chose private school in large part bc it has full day kindergarten. However, I truly wish there was a 4ish hour a day option for kindergarten bc that seems like a happy medium 😀
Quiet activity idea: A game of 7 Up! Even though I wanted to get picked, it was nice to lie down on my desk with the lights out for a little while, haha
They will get more used to the longer day after a while, but it takes several months for the majority of the class. When I taught K I always did a lot of hands on things and no worksheets in the afternoon. Choose activities that allow them to be busy with their bodies or with their hands so they can stay awake. Do the more intense work in the morning before lunch. We also used to put our heads down on our desks for fifteen minutes after lunch and I would read a chapter book. Some kids fell asleep for a catnap and I let them. I made sure everyone woke up at the end 😅 It’s a lot at first! Lucky you have help
Hey Madison! 💜Congratulations on your marriage and becoming a kindergarten teacher! I’ve been watching you for awhile now, and I love your channel! I’m a mom of 2 boys (a 2 and 3-year old) and I’ve been teaching high school English (and some Social Studies) for 12 years now; and I just love your vibe and entire personality! You have some great ideas and advice, especially about the routines (at school and at home) and leaving work at work! I love it! Thanks for sharing, beautiful!!🥰
Hi Madison! I’m a teacher in Europe & we do things very differently! Our schools start at age 3 (not compulsory) with pre-school. That is mornings only all year. Then we have Reception (4-5) 3 full days, 2 half days in alternating groups until after Easter. By the time they are 5-6, most have been in school for two years.
I hope you have the best school year with your littles Madison!!! I loved seeing your first day of school!!! It's still crazy to think that your a teacher to littles but makes my heart happy that they have such a loving teacher!! Love you Madison!
Hi Madison. This is Ali speaking, grade 10th teacher. It was awesome. Thank you for sharing. Pleasure to see you, such a punctual teacher. Everything was great.
I go to school in Missouri so for the whole week last week I had to stay inside for recess because the heat. Which I didn’t even like and I am a fifth grader! Stay safe!
Loved this video! That was really nice for them to give you the day off before school started! I wish my school/district would have done that. We started school on a Tuesday and had a preplanning day that Monday! I hope you have a great school year!
i definitely reccomend doing go noodle with the kiddos for recess! it was always a hit in my class. also centers is a good one too! wild kratts isnt a show most kids watch anymore, so maybe not that show, maybe a different educational show would me more interesting to kindergarteners. im so glad you are posting teaching videos again!! 🎉
When I taught kindergarten, we did Heggerty and our ELA block in the morning before they get tired out haha. My classes seemed to do better with math in the afternoon. Throw a Jack Hartmann counting video on and they’ll get their second wind 😂
You can even play months of the year by Gracie cornner it's a really good song to learn your months and months in Spanish that's another tip for you Madison ❤❤❤❤love you
Hi Madison! Kinder teacher here. I do Heggerty in the mornings, but will start this the second week of school. I am going to take it slow at first, then gradually add more during this time. I love Heggerty and also think it's an important part of the Kindergarten curriculum! Yes, the first week is exhausting, but the kiddos will get into a routine and it will get better! Have the kiddos learned their number yet? I began the first day and most kiddos know it already! Keep up the great work and you will see amazing things happen within your students! 😊
Is kindergarten mandatory where you live and do you only have one year of kindergarten? Where I live, there are 2 years of kindergarten. The first year is junior kindergarten where they are typically 4 at the beginning of the year (unless their birthday falls between Sep-Dec, they are 3 when they start). The second year is senior kindergarten and they are typically 5 at the beginning of the year. But kindergarten isn't mandatory here. Children don't legally have to be in school until they are in first grade. I'm always curious how it works in other countries.
Do brain breaks, to get them energized again. We play bingo games for our indoor recess(color, shape, numbers and letters). We also just dance. We start on a Monday with no half days. This week we had no air conditioner with the 100 temps😮.
I got a tip for you Madison you should play what I am by William it's a little video of sesame Street and it tells the kids what they are and making them feel good and happy ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I’m thinking about changing careers and getting into teaching elementary education to be more aligned with my own children’s school schedule. I’m worried I wouldn’t be able to plan an organized and consistent lesson plan for the year. Is this something you learn in college, or do you need to get advice from other teachers on how to do this? Thank you! ❤
Probably just 1 teacher. That's what we do at my school. We are a K-8th school. We co-teach in K-5th. We have building subs, but middle school would get priority for subs since they don't have co-teachers.
We have 10 minutes for the kids to eat and put on a movie or show unfortunately the team didn’t want the kids to play they have to sit down and watch or do something quietly😢

Afternoons are hard for littles. They are just done after lunch. I would definitely push Heggerty to the morning time. Lots of brain breaks help.
Virtual P.E. all the way! There are so many P.E. teachers who put out super fun brain break activities.
P.E. with Mr. G is just one of them.
I love your classroom your a amazing teacher
My new favorite saying is, that can be tomorrow's problem.

you could do silent. the teachers would do that a lot for rainy day recess when I was in elementary school. Use a soft squishy ball
Quiet activity idea: A game of 7 Up! Even though I wanted to get picked, it was nice to lie down on my desk with the lights out for a little while, haha

I hope you have an amazing year Madison! 😁
You could come up with a game that the kids can play. Like something interactive.
I am so glad you’re back in the classroom! I have loved all of your videos. You and Kathy are two of my fave vloggers!
I hope you have the best school year with your littles Madison!!! I loved seeing your first day of school!!! It's still crazy to think that your a teacher to littles but makes my heart happy that they have such a loving teacher!! Love you Madison!

I teach pre-k and 3 yrs old, we get nap time and that’s a hard time to get them back up on their feet we do dance breaks and Brain breaks
When I taught kinder I always taught heggerty right after morning meeting! I already had them at the carpet and still had loads of energy!
I did 'Jitter Juice' with my 3rd grade scholars. I used Sprite and Lime Sherbet. They LOVED it! 😊
Have a great year ❤ I’ve always wanted to be a kindergarten teacher so this is super helpful ❤❤❤

You can even play months of the year by Gracie cornner it's a really good song to learn your months and months in Spanish that's another tip for you Madison ❤❤❤❤love you
We sometimes do centers and my kids love 4 corners! You just have to explicitly teach it.
Idea for indoor recess play hang man on the board tik tack toe heads up seven up board games color sheets puzzles
For indoor recess, an old colleague of mine has a channel with fun brain breaks that are like virtual video games. It’s called “Coach Corey Martin.”

Also a kindergarten teacher here, definitely move Heggerty in the morning if you can because after lunch you typically lose them 😂

When watching your videos, I accidentally hit ‘like’ and never knew when. Best wishes teaching kindergarten have fun❤
My sweet daughter Sofia would want to see how your first day went

Are you allowed to give them a quick snack in the afternoon?
If you or your co-teacher would need to call off, would they have a sub come in, or would the class have one teacher for the day?
