"People that are godless, if you don't believe in magic on some level, then your art probably sucks, you gotta believe in some kind of magic, maybe not god, but if you're not inspired, if your heart isn't lifted by some supernatural thing that you've witnessed, real or not then you'll be focussed on your looks, your money, you'll be focussed on something that has no heart." -MJK.
Even as a staunch atheist, I find alot of value in that statement, since I'm in a creative field of study this made me reevaluate why I'm on the career path that I'm on.

I think the real problem is when people don't find existence magical already. I don't need gods or ghosts, I'm made out of stardust and there's beer.

I live in Grand Rapids. Grew up here. My older brother got a short lived gig as the lead singer in one of the bands Maynard is referring to. My brother brought home Tools LP, “opiate” that the drummer handed off to him. Was the summer of 92, I believe. I was 14. I’m 42 now. Just saw Tool in Detroit 3 weeks ago. They’ve certainly perfected their craft! Best show I’ve ever been to, hands down. Such a trip it’s been since 92.

  • @tandbergj
    @tandbergj 8 лет назад +8

This guy is right, If you are not a tool fan by now, you have missed the boat. The ship has sailed. I've been a fan of tool since I was 12 (1996), and I'm 31. Excluding "Undertow and the Opiate EP," I fervently awaited the release of each subsequent album. "Salival (out of print boxed set & DVD), Lateralus, and 10,000 days," we're all beautiful moments in my lives when I got the experience of buying the record, the opening of the packaging expereince, and then losing myself in over an hour of brand new Tool. And this isn't even to mention four times spent catching them on tour since the "Lateralus Tour in 2001." So what I'm saying is Tool is a band that you really had to grow up with to fully appreciate their growth as a band. I'm sure you could go buy all their records and appreciate them to a great degree, but you will never have experience of coming of age with Tool's music. Tool for me has been like a 17 year pilgrimage through my adolescence and early adulthood. Sorry guys, but it's true, you just can't catch up with someone who has their childhood influenced by Tool's career.

    • @linkenski

I became a fan in 2009 and though i can't really get to see them live in their prime, you get a perfect sense of how it started and grew by listening to the albums and watching live shows on RUclips. It's just as fascinating but probably not as raw.

+mcpure90 They go together. Even MJK will tell you that. He is the biggest cynic of all in regards to his fans. He will tell you straight up they are all hopeless, angry, pieces of shit. I was one of them growing up years ago. The man hates how people believe he is god, that their lives are so shitty that they must portray someone they have never met, and know nothing about, as a deity.
The man is a dick to his fans but he is a creative genius, so he gets a pass in my book.

lol dude can't even spell "Maron" right, should have spelled it Moron.. lol... Not because Marc is, Marc is great, so is Maynard. Kind of sad, for me, as a Toll devotee and APC fan since the Opiate days (both Tool's and mine lol) Because it sounds to me as if Maynard is just feeling the years, wants to relax, grow some grapes and get drunk! Shame that no wine ever made will EVER be as sweet as the lyrics that came from that man's mind and flowed from his lips...

I can sympathize with what you're saying but I also have to side with Maynard. The guy is sitting back and enjoying his victories in life---living the sweet life as best he knows how. He doesn't owe us anything. I can assure you, I respect the guy a hell of alot more (for being a family man, a man interested in selling a good product in commerce, and a good neighbor to other people.) as opposed to someone going down in flames as a drug addict and/or eventual direct or indirect suicide. The dark undercurrent of Tool mainly derives out of Adam anyway---the evil, ugly, menacing looking dude that paints black under his eyes.
Another creative who believes that happiness actually stimulates his creative forces is David Lynch--he's an advocate of putting happiness above anything else--and that being miserable can only get in your way. I personally believe that misery does do something for art.

      Cally Trask Agreed..
Misery can be looked at as boredom/depression..and some people make art out of that..because there is time to think

@@CalTrask73 uhm he doesn't paint his eyes. He's just naturally always looking tired (potentially from years of drug use and abuse)plus deep eye sockets. I've met him his eyes are just his eyes.

So am I the only tool fan who doesn't LOVE everything they release (Like 10,000 Days, for example)? I just don't get this love it or hate it take on tool.

lateralus was the last good album. 10,000 days had a few good songs but overall i was pretty disappointed. i saw em with my buddy and his dad--who was a huge fan--right after 10,000 days came out. my buddy's dad up and left half way through the set, shouting about how the new songs suck lol. but i'm with you man, one of my favorite bands (as more of a nostalgia thing, loved opiate through lateralus) too many people swing from their nuts.

Jim M sorry you suck at listening to music why dont you go and listen to mainstream bullshit instead of a real band like tool. 10,000 days is quite perfect. ill admit at first i didnt like every song they had from any album. but over time you should eventually find the reason why each song is close to perfect. like right in two. thought it wasnt good. but once you get it you realise how awesome it really is. so hopefully you get on the train or you can just listen to crap all day long

i suck at listening to music because i didn't like 10,000 days as much as the other albums? i said that the album was disappointing to me--not that it was a shit album--and had a few good songs, but it has a LOT of filler bullshit, like lost keys and vigniti trees (to be fair, lateralus had its fair share of filler tracks as well). its one of those albums where i have to be in the mood to listen to it, unlike lateralus, aenima, or even opiate, which i can put on and just rock out. its just my opinion dipshit, i love tool--at least i thought i did, but apparently, according to you, because i don't like one of their albums as much as the rest of their discography. oh lordy, thank you for showing me the folly of my ways, idiot. as far as mainstream music, not that it matters, i don't listen to any of it. i love bands like neurosis, exalt, mogwai, red sparowes, baroness, torche, burweed, etc. check some of those bands out. you may end up like some of them, for instance, the members of tool list neurosis as an influence on their music. isis broke up a couple years ago, but justin chancellor recorded some songs with them and went on tour with them a few times. you know man, open your mind a little bit. people can have differing opinions and still respect people. except for you.
