This interview is an episode of Marc Maron's podcast called "WTF". He generally has comedians on but there's been some musicians as well: Maynard, Josh Homme, Thom Yorke. Great interviewer, he really knows his stuff and the conversations are always funny and informative.
Fuck yea. No other interviewer gets to the core of Maynard. Tool is the greatest band in the world. I dont think any musician can live behind his music though.
@@jennifershenberger3107 he literally had no idea she had passed, which makes me call BS on him claiming to have ingested all of their music before the interview. Even asked if his family was religious. Ugh Judith, hello?
Some of the most insightful moments of my own life happened while sitting in my bed staring at my ceiling listening to Tool during my teen years. Alot of weird stuff happened…
The window never closes sir. Tool are timeless. I’m 32 and I made good friends with some cool dudes in their early 20s that flew all the way from Florida to see them in Ohio last year. They weren’t even alive when Aenima came out and in diapers when Lateralus came out. They’re some of the biggest Tool fans I’ve ever met.
If you have been a fan that long...of course you did. Somewhere in you it was there. It either is or it isn't. It's seed is planted immediately when you heard it for the 1st time. I've been there since the very beginning as well. I get it. 😁🤟🌟👊
I absolutely admire Maynard. That dude is the real deal. From an extremely talented artist, winemaker & black belt in Jiu-Jitsu ... an interesting cat for sure.
Really, Maynard jokes and "hates" on the fans as a way to degrade himself. As in "anybody who would like me must be an idiot". One of those things we all relate to🤘😊.
Thank you both for enlightening me and sharing such personal memories and insight. Made my day! Will listen and share many times. I hope to see your next comedy skit?
Jeeeeeeesus christ, you're beyond right. He just goes over the same precept over and over and over in different words. Get to the fucking point man! Good thing we can skip. DJ made a fool of himself in that intro IMO.
This is what happens when people reupload another channel's videos. The context is lost. If you had gone to Marc's channel for this, you wouldn't be so ignorant and angry. "DJ", ha!
+MetalLovinSportsLover I've watched his show and seen his stand up and can definitely see how he's not the most likable guy. Definitely needs a good slap and a stern "Be a man" talk. But damn...he's an amazing interviewer.
+Thomas Hronec That's what I mean I think he did fine in this interview but I love his show because he's kind of an asshole it's sorta his thing at this point
MetalLovinSportsLover one of the biggest events in Maynards life is his mom having an anuerism and watching her suffer to eventual death. If Maron researched for weeks and didn't know this? Pretty bad
Maynard is one of those rare musicians who have a mysticism around them. Truth is he's less of a musician than he is a farmer. He just has a great work ethic
@@angelofwar9223 He wont say it because it's too obvious. If you're an artist it's good to keep your drug use secret. Its illegal and it distracts from the art. Joe rogan asked if he's tried mescaline and maynard replied "no but I've had a really close friend try it" Rogan responded " and was this friend bald and look just like you" and they laughed their asses off. I don't know why people want it to be true that he doesn't? Do they think its cheating? I mean shit! the people coming up for new designs for you're smart phone are on acid! The more I learn about Maynard, the more I find him and I have in common. The religious childhood, military, outdoorsy, introverted, extremely imaginative, quiet and reserved. Only difference is my folks are still together, well, that and the whole famous thing. But no wonder I love his music so much.
I once went to a Tool performance, in Nl. I ended up very emotional at the long guitar riff it hit me somewhere around the moment Maynard began raising his voice into that melody, his voice became a chant and by the time I heard this singing my eyes burst in tears, men I had shivers and all! Music transcends emotion, it's so powerful. I remember even though this was over 10 years ago, but still Tool is something special. You know that from the first song you hear from this band. It sticks. There are things, moments in time in ones life that he/she becomes content with the age you were born in because of various things, peoples and music being of those thing.
It's not mean, you're being inquisitive although I thought I've been clear in my statement IMO. Could you answer me it ? I thought it was beauty of the music that ´touched´ me at first though... but mayhaps its something different IYO ? This reason I shed a tear... at a Tool concert? If music is stronger then emotion(s), then I bet it has a strong effect on those very same emotions... I guess it overwhelmed me...beauty of it ;)
I think it is just a language thing. Saying "music transcends emotion" means that music would be on a higher plane or level than emotion. I feel that music conjures up and evokes emotions. So to say that music transcends emotion disassociates music from emotion. I feel that music is too intertwined with emotion to transcend it. Im glad you had a great experience :)
Okay fair 'nuff. Allow me to elaborate though that IMO music and emotion are sort of 2 separate things although music can never 'disassociate' emotion for I feel as music comes from emotion but those still aren't the same thing (although they are similar -music&emotion). Music is composed from one form or other of emotion and that's why we're able to identify with it individually but it doesn't have to be our 'own' emotion per se that we're feeling or that is being -conjured or -evoked on when we listen to some particular set of music. It only seems logical to me so I think you as well have to be aware of this therefore how I feel music transcends emotion is the way I find music to be higher then our own emotion, evident if you see particular set of music live.. It is in fact stronger then your own emotional state of mind (more often then not, and do correct me if I'm wrong) because music itself is often composed in a way it combines diff. emotional states and indeed evokes those same 'different' emotions on you(sometimes in a negative way, nowadays more often negative then else IMHO) if you let it. In this way it is 'strong' and thus it is possible to influence you in a way it transcends emotion, your own emotion if you're unaware and if you let it that is. For if you take it at face value by listening it is nowhere near your ´own´ instinct or emotion (I am well aware these are 2 separate things BTW) it simply cannot be because unless you actually made that music it is someone 'else's' emotion you´re experiencing. It is written that way. This is evident in the fact that only when you yourself actually pick up an instrument and cores it´s strings or keys and you begin to play it and make your own music by evoking your own emotion you actually begin to understand what I'm on about. Or when you write music, one which I personally cannot do out of inexperience due to non interest up until now. Things change though. I cannot explain it differently, but I do believe same goes for motion pictures some other form of art or documentary film or other forms of "influenza". Eventually what I'm saying you have to be careful with what you choose to let in, know what I'm saying? To be (moar) specific about Tool; back in the day at that moment , for a moment, it felt as riding a roller coaster. It seemed as if that music came out from within me at that point in time in the form of emotion but I was not aware of having such emotions. For me at that time it felt as if I had a revelation of sorts, I was one with the music as if I was playing it but still it didn't match my original emotions although it felt as being a part of me, I never played an actual instrument up until that point in life so that particular feeling sort of gave me an override of sorts as I stood there feeling many a emotion still I felt one with the crowd and everything else around me and had a particular understanding of the music being played as if it was 'talking' to me. All this happened by people hitting a few strings simultaneously it felt as if DMT was let free to roam my head. Very apart, I was sober at that day still I have a clear recollection of this and is what made that day so special then. For me often music is stronger then my own emotion I have and I feel usually and it is only when I let it influence me through let's say something called "free will" only then it is able to 'evoke' emotions on me personally. Then I'll let it slide as music becomes from of emotion I'm feeling and it hasn't been so strong as with 'ordinary' music except with some bands or individual recording artists. At that time it was indeed something special, a revelation of sorts I had as I've said and I'm glad I was a part of it then. This happened with Tool. As I have a broader musical taste I simply stand still in a point of time and wonder how it would've felt and what would have had happened if I was present at some more, other legendary artist/bands feels like whole, or more, hell would had broken loose :P "Music'll fuck up your life like a crack pipe, if you let it" -lol
It seems pretty apparent that Maynard and Marc are friends. This feels like Maynard at his most relaxed. He didn't seem phased about the mom thing either, that's just people on this board.
Rogan is a sell-out shill piece of shit. He was cool like 12 years ago. Maynards first interview on JRE was the best one, every time he has been on since it's just him answering questions about UFC and winemaking. The one where he went on to talk about the new album Fear Inoculum, was the most frustrating shit to watch. He gave Rogan opportunities to discuss it and ask question about it, but Rogan just went off talking about stupid bullshit. Was terrible.
I get you I find it frustrating as well but. The JRE interviews are fruitless for us TOOL fans as Joe talks to Maynard from a friends perspective, rather than a fan or interview /journalistic perspective. But yeah always still get excited thinking he’ll open up about TOOL On JRE but because of their vibe Those kinda topics just won’t be broached . (All guesswork I dunno the guy For all we know off cam pure troll MJK is like I’ll answer any TOOL shit you wanna know Joe ... just not on camera I like to keep em guessin Hehe
Please stop promoting that no talent hack Joe Rogan. Dude knows very little about anything yet blathers on about everything. He also elevates conspiracy theorists then when confronted (Alex Jones,Truthers, vaccines etc etc) doesn't have the balls or intellectual integrity to stand up for his bs. He's a fraud.
I love how Maynard is constantly messing with us. I looked up some of the bands he mentioned, Dumpster and Dead White and Blue. He said they were good bands. They suck. Thank you for the recommendation, MJK.
I love how Maynard is just flat out honest. I'm sick of people thinking bands need to somehow serve you. Bands don't owe you anything, not even being a "nice guy". Most people are assholes, I won't put up with that shit either. Buy the record, just the fuck up.
one more tool record is all I ask after that he can go on with his life and no I'm not demanding that he needs to make it I would appreciate if he did people like MJK only come once in a millennium
Is there Anyone who truly understands Keenan's Lyrics? My favorite things about Tool is the poetic quality of the songs, and understanding the lyrics : ) Great Band, better Music, Go Tool.
It depends on how much philosophical literature you read, or just how aware one is to ones surroundings. for those that aren't quite so well read, a quick google can give results on the meanings to their songs. But, god damn it, I'm stumped on Rosetta Stoned, those lyrics are so indecipherable
plaguezero Study the rosetta stone and read more of Blairs posts. I think this song is inspired by that whole "encounters of the third kind" kinda wish/ fantasy. On acid ...
plaguezero i heard somewhere that maynard based the song on many different accounts from friends or articles or hearsay or whatever, about abductions, psychedelic and mystical experiences, divine and messianic delusions/expectations/realizations. prolly a little personal exp. on maynard's part thrown in there. pretty much a tributary parody in of reaching divine truths or having visionary experiences while under the influences, then returning to every day life and finding the experiences to be inexpressible or difficult to integrate/remember.
Lou Tewlu Sure, I've heard that too, but would really love to know what's actually being said. bits and pieces are almost coherent but the rest is just drowned out by the music
they're really spiritual but not in a christy way but they still... i mean listen to the song 46 and 2, read the lyrics and if you know what 46 and 2 mean you can grasp the pace of the band, each album has it's own, it's about spiritual growth mostly.
So if his weeks leading up to this interview were all Tool oriented, like really into their music, the interviewer should have known Maynard's mom past away. Right?
Since im one of the Tool/Perfect Circle junkies I have listened to every interview he has ever done. And this is undoubtedly the best one ever. He got Maynard to open up which most can't. You want to see a shitty maynard interview watch the joe rogan one. Kudos to this guy for pulling the funny out of Maynard!
Served in the Army in 84 to 86, so on Veterans Day, Thanks for your service Maynard. Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Fear... All that is what we listened to in Kansas in the field at the Big Red 1
Don't know what everyone's problem is , I think this interviewer is fantastic. It's the interviewer's job to make the interviewee feel at ease, to have them reveal their true self on record, which, believe me, is not an easy thing to do. This guy gets in on a 1:1 level with Maynard, he's not talking to him like some esoteric guru, and you can tell from the way Maynard is just opening up and being himself, that there's a mutual respect here. The majority of interviews I've heard, Maynard just kind of shuts off, or tries to fuck with the interviewer, because he doesn't like them and doesn't respect them. They're not being true to him, so why should he be true to them? But this is really great.
Answer to 39 mins in- 46 now and deep in since 90-ish. I am one of the people that you, your band, vision, lyrics, heavyness, hope, the somewhere else that i would go, that im still using- in many forms-- my soul has been forever changed b/c of TOOL. Emense love, gratitude, admiration of the ability to project- all of those things and so much more. Thank you. I am a much, much, much different and so much better being than i could've imagined. Actually, i always knew that i kicked ass (true but add laugh track if you want to just b/c its hilarious due to its bizzare notion -laughing). Peace guys.

It's odd how he's all calm and laid back for most of the interview, then he gets asked about what inspired him and he gets all stuttery and precise about his wording.
THis is NOT the best Maynard interview. The best are his two interviews were on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast # 246 and 412. Three hours each. and no bs
LiteStyle0o a 180 of Joe? What does that even mean. That's cute, Are you trying to make up idiomatic expressions? Joe is super humble. You are the one that sounds like a pompous ass.
Rogan is great...He is just easily written off cause he did "fear factor" and is an MMA fighter two things I could give TWO shits about. Yet, if you ever seen his stand-up or listened to his pod-cast he's a very interesting dude who hasn't squandered and exploited his fame like some of these pretentious Hollywood douche bags.
I feel as I get older I appreciate music more when I was young I was just stuck on certain bands and that's it no one else hot a chance almost didnt give tool a chance they made me appreciate music after them I started listening to everything but country lol
Love how the interviewer prefaces the interview saying he does his research. Only later to comment about MJK's mother and inquire how she is doing. Did you not listen to the latest Tool album?
He elaboraty states that his research consists solely of listening to ALL music by the person he's interviewing. Also that it's not really research because the guy sitting opposite him is just a guy and the interview isn't about the records they made. Listening to 10.000 days without being a Tool enthousiast for years before, would you really guess the song 10.000 days is about the passing away of his mom? I appreciate you're a Maynard fan, but you're trying to protect the man from a non-existent evil.

You're not wrong about tool being life changing and all but this still comes off as r/im14andthisisdeep
A band LIKE Tool? It don't work that way. Anything that escapes Keenan's lips is a slice of bewbies on ice and even if he was cloned.... Yew get my point. One of a kind. I'll turn to dust waiting for a "like Tool"
@@sussybaka551 I dont have a like tool. But check out porcupine tree.
@@deliriousmysterium8137 don't have a like tool??? What do you mean? And I love PT btw....
Man if I could talk philosophy with Maynard my life would be complete
Indeed, best interview with the man, ever. I really enjoyed listening to it.
This interview is an episode of Marc Maron's podcast called "WTF". He generally has comedians on but there's been some musicians as well: Maynard, Josh Homme, Thom Yorke. Great interviewer, he really knows his stuff and the conversations are always funny and informative.
Hell he even interviewed Barack Obama. I’m not aware of him ever doing any other podcast.
This was an amazing interview, I truly enjoyed it. Maynard is very Talented, funny and Intelligent.❤️
Fuck yea. No other interviewer gets to the core of Maynard. Tool is the greatest band in the world. I dont think any musician can live behind his music though.
I agree but he completely bypassed the death of his Mother. It could of got alittle deeper into his core.
@@jennifershenberger3107 he literally had no idea she had passed, which makes me call BS on him claiming to have ingested all of their music before the interview. Even asked if his family was religious. Ugh Judith, hello?
@@AmeriKen1974 Yes! Immediate turnoff. I am 20 minutes in and can't figure out who it is ??
Maynard obviously respects this interviewer. I've never heard him open-up quite like this. Well done!
Marc Maron! Big props for interviewing MJK! I love you more and more every time I see ya dude.
Some of the most insightful moments of my own life happened while sitting in my bed staring at my ceiling listening to Tool during my teen years. Alot of weird stuff happened…
your phone ring and no one there?
lateralis blaring in pitch dark room was and still is an amazing experience.
Born 1993 and would still give limbs to see them in concert.
This was indeed the best Maynard interview. EVER!! Thanks for posting this.
Loved the interview. Very pleasant talk and I'm now looking at Maynard with much more respect than I had.
This is a great interview. Thank you Marc Maron. Tool for life!!!!
For those interested...damn...Been A tool fan for a long time...never knew his speaking voice was so sexy....
I know right?
If you have been a fan that long...of course you did. Somewhere in you it was there. It either is or it isn't. It's seed is planted immediately when you heard it for the 1st time. I've been there since the very beginning as well. I get it.
😁🤟🌟👊
listen Over by perfect circle
Or revelations by puscifer.
Girl that voice is worth marrying sad to hear he had a wife what a lucky bitch!
one of the best interviews I have heard for a long while...thanks for posting it.
Nice job asking Maynard if his mom was still around.
He's definitely informed himself very well before doing the interview.
Seriously, fuckin moron.
Not everyone is a wiki stalker lol chill
just 'wings for marie/10,000 days' man
carrottoponcrak Dude it’s been discussed on Tool songs and APC songs
Marc purposely doesn't research because he wants everything to be organic. But it does have its downsides.
Never heard him this candid. Made my day.
I absolutely admire Maynard. That dude is the real deal. From an extremely talented artist, winemaker & black belt in Jiu-Jitsu ... an interesting cat for sure.
He's almost there :) Within the last 6 months or so, he moved up to brown belt.
@@alison5009Black belt now
@@GucciButNotGuilty definitely! 👍
I've never hear maynard so open in a interview. This really is a good interview.
Really, Maynard jokes and "hates" on the fans as a way to degrade himself. As in "anybody who would like me must be an idiot". One of those things we all relate to🤘😊.
lol what the fuck are you assuming
Thanks for posting this!
it's WTF with marc maron podcast, dude give credits jesus
Zig Ysosrs
thank you i was wondering!
Yah. for real tho. knew i recognized his voice, only saw mjk in the description, good on ya
Ooooooh, Marc Maron makes a lot of sense. I was wondering who it was. Thanks!
Thanks man. Seriously though. Put that shit in the title.
I'm buying the biography. I think it will be very good.
i am such a Tool fanboy ,that is if you can be a fanboy at 54 lol
Robbie Gray Yes you can... I plan to always be a Tool fanboy
Fucking right . Tool will be played at my funeral .........I hope
Yeah, me too. 48, and the first time in a long time ive been excited about new material from a band.
I'm a fan girl at 53. Just discovered a year ago. And I'm an army wife so there you go
from fanboy to fanman
Thank you both for enlightening me and sharing such personal memories and insight. Made my day! Will listen and share many times. I hope to see your next comedy skit?
"You still talk to your mom?"
"She passed away."
Oof
GorillaBoys yeah this guy didn’t research Maynard at all
Meh. Shit happens. I think Maynard respects that Marc doesn’t know every fucking thing about him.
Oh well he doesn't have time to put every single guests life under a microscope. Let's get real
Turns out lots of people die. What you gonna do? Not talk about the dead and make fun of them behind their dead backs?
Do yourself a favor and skip to 4:20, listening to the dj made me wish he couldnt talk.
Jeeeeeeesus christ, you're beyond right. He just goes over the same precept over and over and over in different words. Get to the fucking point man! Good thing we can skip. DJ made a fool of himself in that intro IMO.
You too? I could not stand this guy!
Thats Mark Maron he is a stand up comedian this is is podcast.
This is what happens when people reupload another channel's videos. The context is lost. If you had gone to Marc's channel for this, you wouldn't be so ignorant and angry. "DJ", ha!
ehcmier such haters!.... love maynard and love marc too. this was a great interview.
I'm not understanding all the Maron hate he's pretty great
+MetalLovinSportsLover I've watched his show and seen his stand up and can definitely see how he's not the most likable guy.
Pretty bad
What a great interview!
I really enjoyed.Thank you very much!
Maynard is one of those rare musicians who have a mysticism around them. Truth is he's less of a musician than he is a farmer. He just has a great work ethic
I love tool and I think all their album are amazing
I wish I could climb inside Maynard's mind!
Probably not, I have a feeling he way overdid it with acid
All aboard for being inspired 😀
Listen to his music
Why do I hear people keep saying maynard did acid he’s answered the question already that he doesn’t do drugs never did
@@angelofwar9223 He wont say it because it's too obvious. (Look up silicon valley microdosing). I'm still trying to get over the fact that their are still pink floyd fans that believe that the members of Pink Floyd never did Acid even after Roger Waters admitted it! Now I encourage anyone to listen to third eye and then tell me with a straight face that these people have no experience with psychedelics. That would be absurd.....

@@lovejulie317 I agree, you and I have very extraordinary children! God bless you both!
It sticks.
There are things, moments in time in ones life that he/she becomes content with the age you were born in because of various things, peoples and music being of those thing.
if music transcends emotion, why were you moved by your emotions to cry? sorry for being mean
As I have a broader musical taste I simply stand still in a point of time and wonder how it would've felt and what would have had happened if I was present at some more, other legendary artist/bands feels like whole, or more, hell would had broken loose :P
"Music'll fuck up your life like a crack pipe, if you let it" -lol
It seems pretty apparent that Maynard and Marc are friends. This feels like Maynard at his most relaxed. He didn't seem phased about the mom thing either, that's just people on this board.
Honestly the most laugh-filled interview I've ever listened to, loved it
To skip to the actual interview 4:17
JuggaloNinjaClown
Buffering
Love his voice. Love this interview.
Why can't Joe Rogan do an interview with him like this? Every time Maynard is on JRE I want to bang my head against the wall!
Because Joe Rogan is a fucking idiot.
So true..never talks about Tool. Joe is too high I think
But yeah always still get excited thinking he’ll open up about TOOL On JRE
but because of their vibe
Those kinda topics just won’t be broached .
(All guesswork I dunno the guy
For all we know off cam pure troll MJK is like I’ll answer any TOOL shit you wanna know Joe ... just not on camera

I mean, Kurt Cobain said he loved The Shaggs 'Philosophy of the World', which is considered the worst album ever.
I love how Maynard is just flat out honest. I'm sick of people thinking bands need to somehow serve you. Bands don't owe you anything, not even being a "nice guy". Most people are assholes, I won't put up with that shit either.

Great interview.
This IS actually the best Maynard James Keenan interview ever
"Get out or I'll kill me!" Lmao that's the funniest shit

So if his weeks leading up to this interview were all Tool oriented, like really into their music, the interviewer should have known Maynard's mom past away. Right?

I personally don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Everybody’s parents die.
Yup, I fuckin Love them. Always have always will. Love Tool. I have continued on for for 20+ years

This literally is the best Maynard interview

It's odd how he's all calm and laid back for most of the interview, then he gets asked about what inspired him and he gets all stuttery and precise about his wording.
This is the best interview! Love the honesty, the humor, finally we get to know the details. Great work!

THis is NOT the best Maynard interview. The best are his two interviews were on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast # 246 and 412. Three hours each. and no bs
Joe Rogan is a shit interviewer, he always makes the conversation about his ignorant ideas...
How are his ideas ignorant?
***** Joe Rogan and New Age? He's a pretty down to earth fellow, if you listen to his podcasts, you'll get it right away.

a 180 of Joe? What does that even mean. That's cute, Are you trying to make up idiomatic expressions? Joe is super humble. You are the one that sounds like a pompous ass.
Rogan is great...He is just easily written off cause he did "fear factor" and is an MMA fighter two things I could give TWO shits about. Yet, if you ever seen his stand-up or listened to his pod-cast he's a very interesting dude who hasn't squandered and exploited his fame like some of these pretentious Hollywood douche bags.

I fuckin love this interview. You can tell the interviewer is actually interested in music
I was thinking the same thing, I was in shock that he even asked that for a minute.
I had no idea that’s what it was about sooo..
first time listing to this interview, I have been influenced by Tool and have injured where they pushed me over the last 10 years.I made 4 hunting movies and started looking it to what I was doing in a different light and it was bright!
