Maynard is the reason I fanboy NO ONE. The farthest I'll go is certain drummers. Most of the best drummers I've met have been very nice and down to earth. Lead vocalists are usually the most fucked up members of any group. Maynard just wants to be more mysterious than he really is when all he is is a dude that sings in a really good rock band. Without Danny and Adam there is no Tool. After all without the music all you have is a dude singing.
That's actually his point though. He's not trying to be mysterious. He took to performing in the back of the stage because he realized that his being upfront was pulling focus from the rest of the band. It was distracting listeners from actually LISTENING to the music the way that they wanted. He knows damn good and well that he isn't shit without those guys. His/their idea is for you to see them as a unit-not Maynard and his band(which is what was happening), but that instrumentally, they are all equal to each other. Adam is the guitar, Justin is the bass, Danny is the drums, and Maynard is the voice. A package deal. He'll gladly be the first person that'll stand up and acknowledge that the other 3 do the heavy lifting and he's just a voice-he's got the easy part. He's said it time and time again. It's the "FANS" that project way more importance onto Maynard than he, himself, wanted and felt that he deserved. Then, they throw that projection back onto him claiming he's a dick for it-as perfectly exhibited in this comment thread. He didn't go to the back out of ego and a need to feel "mysterious"-he did it out of respect for the band and their music. I went to HS with Jim,--opps,---Maynard, and wrestled with him on the wrestling team (I graduated in 81, he in 82). He was a good athlete, who did what I did, he stuck with sports based on the individual. His dad was our coach, and teacher--and was very good at both. I think he was the best grade school teacher I ever had, and he made great impressions on me, that helped me find some success also. Maynard James Keenan, comes from some good cloth. I am a bit surprised he never did a remake of a Kiss song, as he had Kiss posters all over the inside of his hallway locker, or may be that Aerosmith song "Dream on", because I know he dug that song back then. I would love to hear Tool remake that song. I thought it was a great song too. The last time I saw him was at a bar in Grand Rapids Mi. around 1994, similar to that bar in star wars, a place called "The Reptile House",--no longer there. i admit i was taken by surprise when i found out how goofy he(maynard) was and how great his sense of humor was. i always thought he was this tortured and holier-than-thou rocker (maybe like billy corgan) who let his fame go to his head too much. he seems totally cool and down to earth, and even humble and sensitive which is awesome. i found out when he does weird shit like do a show with his back to the stage it's because of stuff like the camera flashes could trigger seizures and he doesn't like talking about his old songs a lot because he thinks of them as being.. not terrible but just.. stuff he made when he was younger and in his mind silly kinda. so it's really a self-critical and self-deprecating kind of embarrassment. i don't think he realizes or he doesn't let it sink in how much his older stuff means to people. which to me is great; it shows he's one of those great artists who always strives to get closer and closer to(what he considers) perfection and isn't satisfied until he is there

i admit i was taken by surprise when i found out how goofy he(maynard) was and how great his sense of humor was. i always thought he was this tortured and holier-than-thou rocker (maybe like billy corgan) who let his fame go to his head too much. he seems totally cool and down to earth, and even humble and sensitive which is awesome. i found out when he does weird shit like do a show with his back to the stage it's because of stuff like the camera flashes could trigger seizures and he doesn't like talking about his old songs a lot because he thinks of them as being.. not terrible but just.. stuff he made when he was younger and in his mind silly kinda. so it's really a self-critical and self-deprecating kind of embarrassment. i don't think he realizes or he doesn't let it sink in how much his older stuff means to people. which to me is great; it shows he's one of those great artists who always strives to get closer and closer to(what he considers) perfection and isn't satisfied until he is there
Maynard is calculatingly deliberate in a way that makes him seem like he is totally random. He's a master manipulator but he does like being the centre of attention. He guarantees it.
