Simply put, the wall represents the main character withdrawing into total self- isolation. The wall shielded him from sharing emotions, feelings, attachments to anyone until he realizes he has no connection to the real world. The wall was built over his lifetime starting with his father leaving and not returning from the war, the teachers physically/emotionally beating him and his mother completely smothering him. That's the summary of side one of this brilliant 4 sided album. Other than the unfortunate y-t breaks, you are experiencing it as we did when this album came out in 1979. Brilliant job.

We sure did experience this album, didn't we Micky. I remember it like yesterday.
Pink Floyd is my life Micky -gonna be 53 years old soon - it was amazing to share it with my son as he grew up. I took him to see David Gilmour third row center at radio city music Hall a few years back I think it was the last time he actually performed the live. It was last minute and completely sold out so of course. I went on I don’t know something like StubHub and there was only four seats left and it was those 4 - 3rd row center. The total cost was $6200 with fees etc. and I borrowed the money to do it. So it was me and my son, my girlfriend and her friend who I just said you can come for free don’t worry about it. I still owe that money to this day and I guarantee I am paying it back but it was the best six grand I’ve ever spent I shit you not. My son was only I think 12 years old at the time and he got to film a bunch of it on his phone. I remember him turning to me at one point during the lasers in some crazy guitar solo Gilmore was in the middle of and he just said, “Coolest grandpa ever” lol. It was really important for me to be able to say that he saw David Gilmour just once in his life and Imknew this was probably his last chance. I was right. Thank god I got those tickets. The thing that blew my mind with his voice was perfect (I guess he was like 77 at the time I don’t even know for sure) and his guitar was obviously so spot on I cried probably 30% of the time. When the smoke started filling the stage and it was quiet and I heard the beginning of shine on you crazy diamond I lost it I - tears just streaming down my face, I couldn’t believe I was sitting there watching this cause that was only the 2nd time I ever saw David Gilmour. Yes I cannot believe I’ve never went to a Pink Floyd concert when I was a kid it just never happened. Anyway this was a hell of a long explanation just to get to the fact that I wanted to tell you that your explanation above was spot on. I love watching Silas sort of like Have this stuff come to him in waves you know as he slowly starts to get what’s going on you know on deeper levels. All of this is so awesome I love you all. As a sidenote we just moved my son into his dorm in college upstate New York he’s an amazing young man and I am a lucky dad. We’re both massive Radiohead fans as a sidenote.

Wise decision! The storytelling is much clearer when you allow the songs to flow into one another. Your starting track, In The Flesh? is the rock star, Pink, introducing you to the show that is his life.
The Thin Ice starts with Pink's childhood, and the album builds from there. Great reaction so far!
Just a little note... you notice how "In the Flesh?" starts off very quietly with the line "...we came in"?
This is a continuation of the last bit of "Outside the Wall" which ends with the line "Isn't this where...".
The whole album is a repeating loop.
I was in middle school when "Another brick in the wall" hit the radio stations. It hit my soul and mind like an electric shock! I had only heard the Beatles , country , and Bob Dylan my whole young life. I had no idea there was music like this before that day. Blown away!

Mother is just a perfect song. David singing as the over-protective mother is so good, and the lyrics for his parts are very strong. They straddle the line between a loving mother and an overbearing matriarch so well.

An important element to this relationship that is missed on the album is that Pink's father died fighting in WWII, when Pink was just a baby. This leads his mother to be over-protective as she is his only caregiver, and he is all she has left after losing her husband.
Also notable is that Roger's father died in similar circumstances, leading to him writing this into the story. I'm always surprised by how little attention this element of the story received on the album, given that his father's death is the first brick in the wall.
Indeed. For all the musical/technical mastery displayed on this album, what makes it so emotionally compelling is that Roger poured his heart and soul into the lyrics, allowing himself to be completely vulnerable to his listening audience. For all his idiosyncrasies and intemperance, Roger had a unique gift of getting straight to the heart of the human condition.

This whole album is one big story of how and why a person dove into insanity. Each brick represents a reason why he built a wall in his mind against what we consider reality. It’s a very deep album. You’re doing a great job, Silas!

Am I missing something? Why did he not start with In The Flesh?
While listening to this keep in mind a metaphorical wall. The wall people build around themselves to protect themselves from hurt.
In the first 2 songs his father goes off to war and dies, that is one brick, then abusive teachers, more bricks, then an over protective mother who will gladly help him build this emotional wall to keep out bad people and protect him from emotional hurt. More life experiences and bricks adding to his wall to come in the upcoming tracks.
The line in "Mother" "she won't let you fly but she might let you sing" really highlights the mother's selfishness, it seems protective but flying means the kid is out of her life and no longer needs her, but letting him sing is selfish because she can at least be entertained, a selfish reason.

I always interpreted the line “She won’t let you fly but she might let you sing” as in she won’t let him follow his fathers footsteps and join the army, or fly a bomber, but she might let him follow his dream of becoming a rockstar.
Silas - I’m sure you must now be realising how enormous this band has been over the last 50 years or so and how profound their messages are, together with the emotionally charged music. I envy you - you are so lucky to be experiencing this for the very first time. Enjoy the journey. I did say that you’ll need a box of tissues with you for a lot of Floyd’s music. When you eventually get to the ‘Pulse’ concert and listen/watch to their song ‘Comfortably Numb’, you’ll need to be tied down to your chair to stop you jumping around the room, climbing the walls etc. That’s one reaction that I, and I’m sure many others, will be looking forward to watching!

Hey Silas! Great video, as always, and I'm glad you decided to do the album this way. I hope you enjoy the album as much as we do! This was my dad's favorite album, which I find interesting, as he was a lot of the reasons (in the negative sense) as to why I identify with the album so much. Every time I hear this album, I just think to myself: "People aren't perfect." There are, when you really stop and think, very few people who are really trying to hurt others. Those people do exist, for sure, but they're, in my opinion, fewer and further between than we tell ourselves. At worst, the majority of people are misguided and may give advice that doesn't quite fit the moment. "Mother" is my favorite song from this side of the album (though I have to give special shoutout to Roger's inhaled scream leading into "Another Brick..., Part 2") because it fits my life, and a lot of others' lives, I imagine. As I mentioned at length in your "Animals, Part 1" video's comments section, I felt controlled for much of my life, and both of my parents had their hand in that. 'Course, it's up to me to fix that, not them, but I digress. I had a lot of people who helped build my wall, but I'm one of the lucky ones, in that I have even more people to come and help me take it down.
I'm excited and can't wait for the next parts of this album! Hope you and your family are well!
With a over protective Mother and a Dad who died when he was small and many other mishaps in his life Waters starts building a metaphoric "Wall" around him resulting in this album. It's a good idea to find out what each album is about before you hear it because it just makes it better to understand what the lyrics are about.

You are such a good reactor Silas! David Gilmour hits you in the feels with his guitar playing. And Roger Waters is never afraid to say what he feels needs to be said. When those two (in particular) combine like this, it is breath-taking. The reason why Another Brick In The Wall Part 2 is the most streamed song is that it was released as a single in the UK, spending 5 weeks at #1. 😊
It was also released as a single in the US and went to number one here as well. People who know nothing about Pink Floyd, know this song from 1979 on the dance dance/disco floor. They had no idea.

@@79BlackRose Ha! Are you kidding? That beat. This was a HUGE hit on the dance floor in '79, 80. And in skating rinks. This song came out at the tail end of the Disco era. It was even produced, musically, with that in mind. Taken out of context, that bass is the only thing club hoppers heard. It is what helped drive it to number one.
David Gilmour and one of the other producers fought feverishly with Roger to keep this disco beat in. Roger didn't want it. They won. The rest is history.

We went to the Wall concert.
I think it was the largest traveling concert production ever.
Throughout the concert they built a large 140' x 30' wall between the stage and the audience. Then destroyed it at the end.
They also had a very large Orchestra and a very large mixed choir along with a boys choir.
Then there were all those involved in the building of a wall and those involved in the theatrics.
Seen five of their concerts every time you walk away feeling numb , stunned and stoned.
Just wait till you hear Meddle or The Division Bell.

It's interesting how life goes sometimes. Roger used to have a very hard time back then, struggling with insecurities, the loss of his father and the condition of the
world he found himself living in. But finally, all the hardships he went through were like fertilizer for his inspiration, and allowed him to write all the great stuff

The Kids were from Highbury Grove school North London. Pink Floyd for their appreciation paid for a new music studio at the school.

The Wall was released in my senior year in high school. You look how I felt when I first discovered this album, too. It still is my favorite Pink Floyd album and based on your reaction so far you’ll find out why. Thank you for letting me relive a part of my youth.

Hope to see you check out the first 6 Black Sabbath albums. The progression of the band over those albums is unbelievable, and they launched a million bands and influenced genres and sub genres to this day.
Mother over protects, doesn't let him be who he is supposed to be. Always will be baby to mother. And when she says "Mother will help build the wall" that isn't a good thing as you will discover.

I remember as a much younger man sitting on a floor with a friend listening to this album taking speed and drinking whiskey from the bottle and being put to bed by my mates nurse girlfriend after her late night shift. The good old days. I’m 65 and survived the adventure of youth.
This is an amazing album - would be even more amazing with Alivia present 🙂 and in the middle of "Another Brick In the Wall Pt 2" is an actual boys chorus from a nearby school in England, which apparently was sneakily arranged by the producer (didn't get official permission to have them sing).
Ezrin got permission from the head of music at Islington Green School, who rehearsed with the kids for a week before the recording. He just didn't tell the headmistress, as she would have disapproved, and put a stop to it. And that's a mixed choir of teens, not a boy's choir. Islington Green has been a mixed school since its inception. The headmistress later voiced support for legal actions by the former pupils over royalties they were never paid.
I was about your age when this record came out - the funnest years of your life! The kids on Another Brick in the Wall Pt2 were recruited from a local school in Roger Water's hometown. They were from a middle school glee club. They were all got paid. They all received a free copy of the album - before it was actually released.
The Wall is a different kind of beast. It's more of a narrative than a mere collection of songs thematically connected. Many prog albums are thematic, but few do so in such a manner that by merely listening randomly to a song here or there on the album, you miss a great portion of the overall story. This is why a film called The Wall was put together and why the songs were played in a certain order on stage, songs performed as a wall is slowly being built by stagehands, a wall placed between the performers and the audience, and that's the theme. I'm sure people in the comments will tell you the specifics of how Waters was inspired to write the music. Not my favorite Floyd album, but it's probably one of their most important and trend-setting.

There;s a song that didn't make it onto this album for time reasons. It's in the movie version, but it basically tells the story of how his father died in WWII. It's hinted at in Another Brick (pt 1).
After you finish the album you should watch the movie which i saw two days after release in Australia. Fantastic to see you starting to realize that the music is still relatable to life today.

There’s a live version of Mother on RUclips from 1980. It has an extended solo which I believe was how it was originally, but they had to reduce it so the could fit the track on the album. We’ll worth a listen.
Silas, The Wall is what is known as a concept album, where all the tracks are related by a common theme. Concept albums were most common in the 1970's.
As for the Wall itself, all that are in the songs are "bricks" in the walls, What makes you as a person and how you perceive the world around you. You "build" your wall around you and it can close you or alienate you from the "outside" world. In his case, the idea about it came from a show that Roger Waters felt a wall between the band and the audience. He later composed the album with his own experiences from his missing father that died in WW2, to his experience with Syd Barret, founding member of the band that suffered from Psychological breakdown from stardom ( Also on the Wish You Were Here album ) and retired from the public eye. So Much layers on this album.
In the movie they declare "And the Anzio bridgehead was held for the price of a few hundred ordinary lives". That line has stuck with me for 4 decades now .Of course one of those lives was Pink's father."And that’s how /the High Command Took my Daddy., from me" .A child who didn't understand the sacrifice . The Wall isa journey from childhood trauma to stardom excess then possible redemption...when Floyd toured this album...the stage production was the largest in history..as the songs were played the crews would put huge bricks, stones..props to build a wall..covering the band, members..until the finale of album..then the wall came crashing down.
For late 70s and again in the 90s with Roger Waters recreating that experience with guest artist..was Andis in my opinion..the greatest Rock stage performance in history. The songsare deep dark and brilliant! Enjoy the Journey...!! ✌️😎❣️
I was 19 at university when this album was released. I was already a Floyd fan so high anticipation. I grew up that year. This album certainly played a part. It's a tough album to deal with at that age if you are willing to think for yourself and not just blindly follow the heard.
The way gilmour's solo explodes out of nowhere in the middle of mother is just heartbreaking
On Roger Waters tour of The Wall he would get local schools where they were playing and teach them the song and have them on his epic concert!
Mother is a masterpiece. Listen to the extended 1980 live version on "Is there anybody out there?". Shivers

When this came out on vinyl I played it and played it, and with helicopter sound just awesome.
The school children singing in another brick in the wall were from the Islington Green School Choir in London (England) “there’s only one London”! who had a very “Cool” music teacher. As I remember the Headmaster was “not happy” even when it went to No 1!
There's a mother's love which we all need and depend on but sometimes there's a mother's love that can smother and crush us.
I had gotten 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' when it first came out.I was disapointed with the 'Wall' when I got it.However when I listened to it the 2cnd time I loved it.Odd how these things happen in life.Pink Floyd will always be my all time favorite band and a heart felt thanks to Sid,Rodger and David.I'll see you guys in 'The Great Gig In The Sky'.

Years ago, I played Mother for my mom and gave the lyrics. When the song was over, I asked her what she thought. She only said, yes.
IDK why but I credit this album for getting me through a large part of my USAF career.
Saw the movie when I was stationed in HI. Angriest movie I ever saw, at least up until then.
In the British education system it is hammered into the heads of students that each subject places another brick in the wall of their education, representing a solid foundation to build their lives upon.

"Echoes" full album and "Echoes -part 1- Live at Pompeii . Absolutely!
When the movie came out I was in highschool. I brought the video to school and our graphic arts teacher showed it to the class. It's a great movie and a great album. When you see the movie the concept of the album will be clear.
Roger Waters wrote this as a "Rock Opera", a stage play (with 2 major sections). That's why everything flows into the other...it's one big masterpiece that Roger created on his own. That's why they only played 31 dates on this tour (1980-1981), b/c they had to recreate Rogers' vision, including building a 30ft high by 60ft long "Styrofoam" wall, to be torn down at the end of each concert, being accompanied by a full string orchestra and choir, preserved and rebuilt for the remaining tour, finishing the story!! (which eventually became "Pink Floyd: The Wall", the film, in 1982 directed by Alan Parker). It is one of my favorite films of all time. Watch it and try to decipher it. Took me years, before the internet! Anyway, the "Bricks" in the Wall represent everything that happened to him as a human being that led him to build this mental "wall". Not having a father due to WW2, his mother being over bearable because of it and smothering him, his cheating wife, his disdain for his band mates and especially the crowds at stadiums who laughed, yelled and set off fireworks at the show while he was trying to sing. It became a farce. One night, Roger lost it (during the Animals tour) and spit in a fans face. He knew he had gone over the top and hated the audience and that he had created a mental "wall" between him and the audience. He knew this narrative could not last if he wanted to continue as an artist so, he eventually got himself together, went away to the English countryside for 2 years, and wrote, "The Wall", as we know it. Gilmour, one of the greatest singers and guitarists of all time, made 8 contributions to the LP, the guitar solo/vocals on "Comfortably Numb" and "Run Like Hell" & others. But that was 11 of the 26 songs on the LP. Roger had also, regrettably, fired Rick as keyboardist/organ/piano. I think he was wrong for that. By the time the Pink Floyd's last LP came out (1985's The Final Cut), it is basically a Roger Waters Solo LP. Gilmour was on only 2 songs, Rick was on NONE and the whole LP was about Waters' father. GREAT album, but, NOT a Floyd album. NEVER sleep on this LP. It is amazing!!!
The wall hits on heavy topics for me and has always “hit different” as your generation says. One of my favorites simply because the feelings it evokes.
One of the producers ran out and went to a local school and got the kids to record unrehearsed. They sued for royalties fairly recently and won. They had originally done it for some small gift.

I first heard this album in 1979. It moved me. It's intense. Sid Barrett. He was behind the Wall.
This album was written for him. He wound up in a mental institution.
When he says mother did it need to be so high, he is referring to the wall that she has helped build around him. It is so high that he can't climb over it, not to mention he forgot to put a door in the wall
You can watch this on dvd. Maybe Netflix? But it’s the wall the movie and is goes through the whole album into one movie and it’s pretty cool to watch!

Those kids singing in "Another Brick in the Wall" are not "random" kids. I've read that they were the kids from the children's choir which was known (the choir) for a very harsh discipline to the point of abuse. That's really cool that they pick up those kids to strengthen the song's message.
Never try and pick a favorite. Its like Sophie's choice... Just listen and enjoy every time, I heard this at least thousand times and still get goose chills from Gilmour's Guitar.

I suggested in the comments on your last videos that it would be a good idea to look up what the story of the album is about first, that way you know what the story is about and you can follow along with the lyrics. It's in my opinion the most interesting yet almost creepy stories I've ever heard and mostly based on real events with Roger Waters and Syd Barrett's life.
This album was made into a big Hollywood feature film back in 1982, which you would really like. it's completely spectacular.
The film was always part of the plan for Waters. It just took a lot longer to complete because Waters had his hand in every aspect of it.
Roger's lyrics are deep. His grandfather and father died in WWI and WWII respectively.

Another brick in the wall was was my class song when I graduated in 1982 ... absolutely amazing that any of us survived the total debauchery that took place that summer ... each and every single member of my entire graduating class earned their tickets to hell that year for sure ... please be nice and don't do drugs !!!
