    "The dogs of war" is a phrase spoken by the character Mark Antony in William Shakespeare's play, "Julius Caesar". "Cry 'Havoc!', and let slip the dogs of war." In this song, the phrase, "The Dogs of War" describes politicians orchestrating wars, suggesting the major influence behind war is money.💲

    A little history lesson: this is the 1st Floyd album after the departure of founding member, bassist and main songwriter Roger Waters.
    After the bombastic, thematic nature of The Wall and The Final Cut that was all Roger's inspiration, Gilmour takes things back to the more melodic and sometimes experimental sounds of Darkside and Wish You Were Here.
    Consider this and Division Bell to be Pink Floyd 3.0
    1st version was with Syd, second with Roger's lead and now Gilmour is in charge.
    I've never chosen sides between Roger and David. Both have their pros and cons when it came to songwriting.
    But Gilmour takes the edge in that both his voice and of course legendary guitar work were major highlights of the Floyd experience.

    • @Gekokujo76
      @Gekokujo76 Год назад +1

      I agree with everything you wrote except that Gilmour takes the edge. Waters and The Wall explored the very real Inner Space while Gilmour masterfully explored Outer Space. Darkside is a GREAT album to do LSD and listen to....The Wall should change the way you look at art and life itself.

    • @Achrononmaster
      @Achrononmaster Год назад +3

      Unfortunately Gilmour is no great lyricist. Great voice, but Waters had the gritty poetry. It comes through in that all albums post-Waters have little cohesion, they are pop albums, not concept albums, in my view.

    • @crazyfingers19
      @crazyfingers19 Год назад +2

      @@Achrononmaster On The Turning Away is poetry in my opinion. Harkens back to Us And Them. I think Waters was the explorer of the past to understand the present whereas Gilmour was yearning for hope to lead us into the future. Combining both approaches, an informed journey forward is on more solid ground. 🙂

    I’ll also add that prior to this album, Roger wrote most of the lyrics. After this album (Division Bell and David’s last two solo albums), his wife Polly wrote most of the lyrics. Which I am totally okay with it. This album, I’ve never been quite clear who wrote what. David definitely wrote some of the lyrics but so did some others. But in the end, it’s the finished product that matters and I have always connected with this album. One other side note, at one time Dogs of War was voted the worst Pink Floyd song of all time but I feel it has gotten better with age. I’ve always liked it. Even the worst Pink Floyd song (assuming that is even true) is light years better than the best song from many other bands. That’s a testament to who strong and impactful all of their releases have been.

    • @79BlackRose

      There are many much worse songs on The Wall and The Final Cut! In fact, I would not list it in the worst Pink Floyd songs at all. IMO, most of them were in the 60s. The Dogs of War is a great song. And I agree with Silas, it is the best of the first three tracks opening the album.

    Thankyou for this, Its been a tough day here in the UK today and this has helped.
    This is the first album after Roger Waters left the band will be interesting if you have noticed some differences.
    "Cry Havoc and let slip the dogs of war" is from Shakespeares "Julius Ceasar. As for wars well the UK were in the Lebanon "peacekeepers" but most likely its a nod to the Falklands war of 82 which was controversial (Another dig at Maggie Thatcher). There were also strikes through the 80s with lots of police brutality, plus the death and violence in Northern Ireland.
    An interesting thing to note David Gilmour was learning to fly a plane at the time of this album.

    Seems incredible that a song like "Dogs of War" is regarded by a good part of the fans as one of the worst Pink Floyd songs. That piece certainly lacks the lyrical effectivness of Roger Waters (that left the band two years earlier) and, musically, tries to link to other PF classics (for example "Money" for the alternance of guitar and sax in the bridge). All true. Furthermore, one can point out the redundancy of an ant-war song that is published just four years after an entire anti-war album (The Final Cut). That said, I still regard this as a really fine and engaging piece of music.

    I kind of wish you had taken on The Final Cut first, to put an end to the full Pink Floyd lineup. This album gets unfairly criticized because Gilmour brought in a lot of collaborators to get that “Pink Floyd Sound”. But Roger did the same on The Wall and The Final Cut. I still think age has been kind to this album, it holds up for me, even with the very 80’s production. And this album really put Pink Floyd back on the map. The tour was hugely successful. It was when they really started using lasers and taking the stage production with lights and effects that we now associate with them. Not my favourite, but I never really dug deep into this one, ast he 80s synths were too much of a turn off for me. Some great songs on here though. It was sign of the potential that would lead to the much more organic sounding The Division Bell. But let's see how this goes.

    In all your Pink Floyd reactions you always say "That guitar....".🙄 That guitar is an instrument played by David Gilmour!🔥🐐 That guitar is not standing there playing itself.💯 Give the musician the respect his talent deserves, please.🙏 So no more, "that guitar....", instead try saying "David Gilmour on that guitar.....!😁❤️✌️

    The older I get the more I think I’m more of a Roger Waters fan than a Pink Floyd fan . “The Wall” and “The Final Cut” are my favorite Pink Floyd albums. I also love Roger’s solo stuff. I think Floyd only made three really good songs after Roger left, “Learning to Fly”, “Wearing the Inside Out”, and “High Hopes”.
    I’m not the biggest fan of this album. David Gilmour is an amazing guitarist and a great singer, but for Roger was the “heart” of Floyd.

    Love your Pink Floyd reactions although I will have to say momentary lapse of reason was a good title for this album because they never should’ve made it really a terrible album and not worthy of the name Pink Floyd. after Roger Waters left they didn’t have any ideas and had to hire 14 different lyricist to help them come up with something. anyway once David’s wife Polly came on board and helped with the lyrics their second album without Roger call the division Bell was much better. Still not quite a real Pink Floyd album by far better than a momentary lapse of reason

      @@jimo7593 I can agree that the final cut was not one of the more memorable Pink Floyd albums but there’s a couple songs on there that were fantastic compared to zero songs on momentary lapse of reason in my opinion and in the opinion and of the most critics. David Gilmour’s guitar made the song ‘sorrow’ tolerable to at least listen to

      @@bmille2121 IMO Final Cut is garbage, practically unlistenable, much like Roger's latest solo release. I'd like to know what songs you happen to like and why. As far as Momentary, aside from it being very 80sish (I can't stand learning to fly), it has some very good songs, On the Turning Away has as good a message as Us & Them, One Slip and Terminal Frost are decent efforts. The Final Cut are reharshed Wall out takes and Roger whining about missing a father he never actually knew. The best thing about the Final Cut is the sound, the Holophonics are incredible and would loved to have all their previous concept albums done in such. But to listen to the album, I'll pass.

    This album is "meh!" I like Signs of Life leading into Learning to Fly. It had a promising start, but the album falls apart after that. The Dogs of War is unlistenable for me, and One Slip is just 80s drivel. I hate both tracks. "Was it love, or was it the idea of being in love?" Awful! I love the guitar solo for On the Turning Away and I think Yet Another Movie is underrated, but this album is directionless and lacks any substance. This isn't even the best Gilmour solo album. I'll listen to Rattle that Lock before I listen to this album. With that said, the 2019 remix is an improvement, but this is still one of the worst releases under the Floyd name. The Division Bell, with the return of Rick Wright, is a far superior Floyd album in comparison. I think the best Floyd albums have a good balance of Wright, Waters, Gilmour, and Mason as writers and players. WYWH was really the last time they had that balance. I love a lot of the stuff after, but as Wright's contributions became diminished, so did the quality of the band. Just my opinion.

      @@79BlackRose No, I love Obscured by Clouds, Meddle, Atom Heart Mother, and Piper. I also love the Division Bell which could be considered only a loose concept album about communication, but very loose. It is far better than this album. I just think albums that keep my attention from start to finish have direction and purpose. This album just does not accomplish that. It has its high points, but the low points just make me hit the skip button. I have the same criticism with the Final Cut (Waters solo album) Saucerful of Secrets, More, and Ummagumma. A great album just flows like Who's Next or Led Zep 2 and 4, or Abbey Road. On top of all that, Mason hardly plays any drums on it and Rick is just barely a session player. It's a fine Gilmour solo album and at best, "a fair forgery" of a Floyd album.
