The movie truly ties the whole story together and brings it to life. It's a true work of art and very well executed. Once you've seen it the whole album will come to life as well, making each listen that much more impactful. It's well worth a watch, however it is very dark in tone. But I can't help to see it in my head when I hear this album, despite the decades since last watching it.
It wasn't a gimmick or a failed attempt, the movie was nearly perfect.

Wanna hear something mindboggling? I was born in 1950. My friends and I have known Pink Floyd for 50 years! 🙂 We bought their albums one by one as they came out while we were about your age, and listened to them at will throughout all those years. And in our particular corner of the world, we even got to rediscover them a second time when we progressively mastered english and got to understand the lyrics. Isn't that mindboggling? 50 years! 😃

"Ax" is just another name for guitar. So, his "favorite ax" is actually his favorite guitar and not a battle ax. The character "Pink" in the story is a musician.

Gilmour is the voice of Floyd to me, he sung nearly all of their classics, and he has a beautiful voice. But Roger's delivery on this album in particular is genius. One Of My Turns is so strong, and so well done. Going from cold and distant to a table flipping maniac mid-song like he did could only have been done by him. Not many could pull off that song, or would even think to try.

There's no one voice of Pink Floyd. There are four, Roger Syd, Rick, and Dave. Gilmour is probably the best singer among the four, but they all have contributed great vocals. Rick is probably the most underrated. I love his vocals on Time and Burning Bridges. His vocals were essential to the early Floyd sound.

I didn't like "Don't Leave Me Now" when it came out but now I think it's one of the most compelling songs that they've done. The self pity and the insanity of swimming in your own misery while whining "how could you do this to me" when it's clear that he was the bad apple, so well portrayed.

Well done, Silas. As others are saying, you should see the movie at some point. It helps fill in some of the details. Then come back and listen to the entire album. You will be amazed at how much information was presented through the music and the lyrics. I think it is a bit confusing to follow because there are different "characters" singing different parts, like in "Mother". I wish this lyric video would give those cues. Don't worry, you can enjoy this album for another 43 years like many of us have. :)

In a nutshell, The Wall tells the story of fictional rock star "Pink," and his journey into self isolation behind a "wall" that separates him from those around him as he slowly breaks from reality.
The death of his father in WW2, his over protective mother, over bearing teachers, are all bricks in his "wall."
At this point in the story, he finds out his wife is cheating on him back home while he's on tour.
He brings a groupie back to his hotel room then freaks out on her, destroying the room and chasing her off.
The final tracks are the final few bricks being put into place as he shuts down completely, now mentality cut off from the rest of the "cruel world."
    The wall is complete.

multiple listens will make things clearer,so i hope in your off screen time you are going back and hearing things you may have missed the first time around. for instance the girl who said,"oh my god what a fabulous room!" is a groupie the character "pink" has taken back to his hotel room trying to get over the realization that while he's been on tour his wife cheated on him. one of his "turns" means he's bipolar and given to fits of rage which you hear as he trashes the hotel room. you're not expected to get everything the first time around,so just keep listening in your own time and it'll come to you. people keep saying "watch the movie". keep in mind when the album was released the movie version was years away. the audio is all we had to figure out this very complex story, and in a way it's more satisfying.

an "axe" is a slang term for a guitar. A "turn" is a temporary mental episode. "Don't mind grandma, she's having one of her turns." Keep going.

„One of my turns“ and „Don’t leave me now“ are probably the most messed up songs Waters has ever written.
    So disturbing and dark.

So on the first half you have all the major events in his life that make him basically build a wall up around himself as a coping mechanism (dad dying in war, overprotective mother, abusive teachers at school, horrible illness that almost kills him as a child, finally after abusing his wife she leaves him). Last part, he brings home a groupie to his hotel but he snaps, scares the shit out of her, destroys the room and has complete mental breakdown (goodby cruel world!). In the next to sides you see the "new Pink' post breakdown, strap in younge man!

Some of the transitions on the clips you're listening to are a little bit wonky and more startling than they are on the album, haha, but that was probably done for copyright reasons.

Roger Waters wrote this after a confrontation with a rowdy audience and he was provoked to spit on the concertgoer. It is about desire to build a wall between the musicians and the audience. It is not about drugs but being sick of the audience not listening to the music. During the tour of the album they built a wall of styrofoam bricks and at the end when the judge says tear down the wall the whole wall come tumbling down revealing the band. If you want to see the best recreation of the wall live, see roger waters, Live at the Berlin wall when they were in the process of tearing it down. 750,000 people were there as well as a cast of thousands including the Red Army choir, the berlin philharmonic orchestra, Van Morrison, Cindy Lauper, 100's of children singing A Brick in the wall and the Scorpions playing "Pink and his Band". It is worth every second of your time to watch it.

That dialogue you hear from a young girl is a groupie Pink brings to his hotel, after discovering his wife had been unfaithful. He gets angry breaks things in the hotel. Lashes out at her. The groupie gets scared and runs away from Pink and out of the hotel. Now do you understand?

Remember from the previous song is Pink's realization that his wife has left him for another man while he is on tour in the US. So now he is holed up in his hotel room lamenting the loss of his wife when a groupie finds her way into his room. Groupies are sexual predators and Pink is a mere victim to their wiles. So, in his mind he is blameless for the break up with his wife. The TV in the background plays like an internal dialog as it responds to this interloper. It repeats the name "Mrs. Bancroft", an allusion to Anne Bancroft who starred in the movie, The Graduate, and she played the part of Mrs. Robinson, the sexual predator to the Dustin Hoffman character Benjamin Braddock. There is this one famous scene where Mrs. Robinson lures Ben into her daughter's bedroom. She then slips into the bathroom, undresses and traps Benjamin in the bedroom. Ben then runs off. Waters actually recorded this from a number of episodes of the daytime soap opera, "Another World" the last week of September of 1979.
As the groupie runs off, the next song starts as he is reminded again of his wife running off with another man. The sound of breathing is a hint that this all is playing inside Pink's head. The whole album is a continuous replaying of the justification of this psychological wall which always ends the same way. But it plays over and over. Ultimately having beaten himself up lamenting the loss of his wife he breaks through by smashing the televisions that represent the outside world telling how he should live. He makes a complete break from the outside world with a simple good bye.
Pink will find out that being alone with his own mind is not a blessing but a curse. And it is soon to turn on him in the coming episodes.
