    Thank you so much for the time you spend, to make these instructional videos for do-it-yourselfer's and amateur's like me. I really appreciate people like you that have over 3 decades of experience, in a particular trade, sharing their knowledge with people like me, that have absolutely NO experience! Please don't pay any attention to these people that criticize you. They obviously have other issues, that don't include plumbing......Thanks again!

    Hi. Thanks for this video. I just installed my kitchen drain and faucet, no leaks following your video.
    I was having a hard time until I saw how you installed the p-trap at the end, was what I needed. Just saved the cost of a plumber. All the best.

    Thanks for the details describing the fitting trap adapter, and how deep the pipe goes into the fittings, as well as the explanation of the dry, measurement and glue fit sequence. This is so important in a glued up system.
    I have always used the compression fittings, but now I see that this is such a positive leak proof system I’m changing my approach, hey I’m 80 and never too late to change.
    I have watched several “professional” glue up videos and they don’t explain measuring, dry fit, and the glueing steps, everything is pre cut and they just stick it together.
    Then there’s the first time amateur that verbalizing everything using the wrong confusing terms, leaving out important details, and rambling about subjects that have nothing to do with the job at hand, as well as introducing their dog, or young child that is distracting them from the job at hand.
    Thanks again for focusing and going through the process is a logical and detailed manner, I really appreciate it.

      Hello H H,
      You're welcome!
      I try and keep it as simple as possible so that anyone can follow.
      I am not a big fan of compression drain fittings. They are popular, but I know that I will have no problem with any pipes leaking do to expansion and contraction when glued.
      You have 20 years on me and I try and learn something new every day. Trying to keep the grey matter as fresh as I can.
      Thanks for the kind words and best of luck with any future projects! Al

    Hey Tom;
    Michigan...Great place!
    I am a Licensed Plumber and have been doing this work for over 3 decades and I may add that I don't have callbacks!
    Everyone does things a little differently when it comes to installs as you would know.
    I have no doubt that all your work has been perfect.
    You can flash up all the paper work you want, but I have fixed many an install that a few Contractors have done.
    No excuses here, What I do...Works! Period.
    Enjoy your day! Al

    Thanks for the video. I do a drain hook-up every few years and this is a good reminder lesson for me. You tube is a great place to learn these things thanks to people like you. The hard part for me is getting the correct fittings the first time from the parts house and then getting myself under the sink. Thanks again, your work is very much appreciated.

    Thank you for sharing. Our dishwasher was not draining due to a clogged pipe and we also had a cracked pipe. Yesterday, I replaced all the pipes under my kitchen sink including the dishwasher wye connector. I tested everything this morning and it is running perfectly with no leaks!! My husband did not want me to do it and insisted we call a plumber, but he didn't know the power of RUclips like I did. So, thanks to your video I was able to fix our plumbing problem for $40 (Canadian!!) worth of parts. :)

    Theoldkidd,
    I"ve been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out and you made it look very simple. I've replaced the counter tops and kitchen sink, but because this is an older home, the plumbing doesn't go into the back of the wall but rather straight down into the bottom of the cabinet. You've made it look simple and given me a great visual of how to move forward.

    • @TheOldkid888
      @TheOldkid888  10 лет назад

      Hello Dave;
      I am glad it helped you out.
      The only issue that you may have is an s-trap which is not up to code, but will work. An automatic air vent should be placed on the system to allow air to enter and drain better. There are thousands of homes where the drain goes through the bottom of the cabinet and this is the case.
      It will still drain for you, but you may get a gurgling sound as it does. The air also helps the water flow better and scour the inside of the pipe.
      Thanks for commenting and I hope you get along well with the project! Al

    Hello Monkeywrench864;
    I don't use 2 part wastes. I have never had a kitchen sink have only one side plugged and if I did run into that problem a plunger would take care of it easily. If you lose something down the drain such as a ring; it is just a matter of removing the clean out on the bottom of the trap and it will be there. I have been at this business for over 3 decades and have very few complaints.
    Thanks for your comments and enjoy the weekend! Al

I cut out all the old stuff and did exactly what you did here. I had it done in 30 minutes and 3 days later, still no leaks and it looks nice and neat. Thanks again!

    at 6:50 you propose to glue the nipple piece into the wall. Plumbing codes call for a trap adaptor to be used where you want to glue into the wall. The reason being you may what to take the drain apart to clean it or service it. You have it all glued tight and you would have to cut the drain out to snake the drain. Not having a trap adaptor is against code. Thanks

    Great video & explanation. Just finished putting in a new kitchen double sink for my daughter. The configuration was exactly the same as the one in your video. Information you presented was perfect. Also watched your video on sink strainers. Ditched the strainer foam gasket that came with the sink and used plumbers putty as recommended by you. Turned on the water after completion of the plumbing and no leaks! Thanks again.

      I stay away from the foam gasket as I have seen a few problems occur over the years and you only want to make an installation once and walk away with no worries. Putty has been used for decades and works exceptionally well!

    Hello B Charron;
    You are talking about the nut on top of the adapter or is there a plastic tapered washer on your adapter? You should be able to replace the tapered nut or the plastic washer. After you have loosened your adapter nut,unscrew the tail piece nut off of the basket strainer and push the line down enough to slide the tail piece from the adapter. Hopefully it will move enough for you to take the tail piece out and install the new nut or washer.
    Tks for commenting and best of luck! Al

    I appreciate all your help. I discovered that my problem was that the drain trap pipe was clogged. I bought one of those Augers, and fished out all the gunk. Now my water from the left side pipe goes down without a problem. I bought all the pieces to repipe the right side of the sink such as the p trap, T Y pipe, 90 digree pipe and some cuts of abs pipe along with glue. I think I can take over from here. Thanks so kindly for your advice!

    I apologize for my tardiness in getting back to you. I found your comment when I was responding to one this morning. Not sure if you got the repair done or not, but you can use fernco coupling to attach to the drain heading for the sinnk and replace the entire set up under there. They come in many different sizes and are made to attach from metal pipe to plastic. I have used them often and I have a few videos made on them.

    Hello;
    I get a laugh out of these comments.
    You are correct in saying that it needs grade. Thanks for pointing it out.
    If you have ever done any work under a sink and I would say you have; you probably noticed hundreds that actually grade the wrong way. I have and I generally fix them, but ironically they still drain.
    I was looking for your video and had trouble finding them on this install.

    Hello turbo;
    I never have used a p-trap with unions. I know it may sound hard to believe, but I look at it as 2 more places where there could be a leak. The cleanout plug in the bottom of the trap can be used if neccessary to unplug the sink, but it is my last resort. I try and stick to the plunger where ever possible. Most times the plunger will resolve my problem. The auger will go into where the plug is easily if not.

    Hello B Charron;
    By your video I see you have a brass tailpiece that has to be changed. That is definitely a problem and where the water is coming from. That is the first thing to change. The plug in the back is there as a clean out I presume. You can unscrew that with a wrench as it should not be glued, but threaded in place. You can install an AAV and it will help to put air in your system. It also looks like the abs has dropped off of the brass tailpiece as well. Part 1 See below for 2.

    Hello Monkeywrench864;
    Great comment! No harm in installing one if you wish.
    There would be no need for a cleanout as far as I am concerned as most kitchen sinks can be unplugged with a plunger.
    I would also install a cleanout if I was going into a slab, but almost all buildings in this area have basements and the cleanout is at the base of the stack as per code.

    Hello BRICEN18;
    The distance that I add on when I am installing pipe and fittings up to 2 inch in size is three quarters of an inch.
    The distance that the pipe goes into the fitting is called the fitting allowance. I apologize for not making this clear and I will do a video just on this subject! It can be difficult at times to get it exact if using a saw as the cut has to be relatively straight to add this measurement.

    Hello Anastasios Potamitis;
    Thanks very much! It is funny how different areas have different code regulations. After doing a fair amount of work over the years; the code has changed several times and I am sure it will swing back to some of the previous ways and they worked well for many decades. You are more then welcome!

    Hello arhuoseh;
    This is done to Canadian code and a cleanout is installed at the base of every stack. A cleanout can be installed, but is not mandatory unless you are going into a concrete slab.
    If you need to clean your vent lines then you are in big trouble.

      Thanks!
      Never used a wooden folding rule, but my father had one that I have as a keepsake.
      I huddled around an old lead pot many a time. In the ditches with the lead and oakum. Must say that I don,t really miss those days. I should have fired back with lead to Bibby to MJ. Doesn't really matter in the big scheme of things.

    Hello BigShitShow13;
    The reason I have been piping kitchen sinks like this for over 30 years is because it lasts. there are no compression fittings and everything is glued together; so the chance of having any issues in the future qith leaks is very slim.

    @SlickyWickyNicky Thanks for your comment. This is just a demonstration of how to pipe a double stainless steel kitchen sink drain and if you note I do mention to tighten both nuts in the video. What I said in the video is before you close the doors make sure you tighten the 2 nuts. I actually have this cabinet on a work bench to give a clearer view. Have a great day...Al

    Good video. Thought I'd mention that perhaps using a P-trap that screws on might be a good idea, especially if you need to replace a Slip Joint Nut (and washer) on the Tail-piece. Also. Probably not too obvious, but it's probably a good idea to have a slope along the horizontal pipe (to the P-trap), by adjusting the Trap-adapters so that one end is slightly higher than the other.
    Thanks for posting.

      Hello TURnKEYiNK,
      You're welcome!
      Definitely need a little grade. 1/4 inch per foot on anything below 3".
      I was taught to use all glued and it is very hard to break old habits especially after forty years. LOL
      I appreciate your comments.

    @bookem1313 Hey book;
    You do glue both adaptors. One to the 90 and the other to the TY. All fittings must be glued for sure. I once saw a job where the homeowner did not glue them and they stayed together for a considerable long time before he had any leaks. Usually hot water will cause the fittings and pipe to expand and slowly pull apart if they are not glued.

    @ElroyMaynard Hello;
    There is no need of 2 traps as one is suffice. A 90 degree elbow is cheaper then another p-trap as well. This is plumbed according to code as well.

    Hello arhuoseh;
    I would never use an adjustable trap. Plunger will work 99% of the time and the cleanout is located on the stack below in the basement as per code.

    Hello Dj;
    I apologize for the late response. That can be a bit of a challenge, but it is possible to do. You can use a fernco coupling which has 2 clamps on it. One you attach to the piece coming out of the wall if you cannot get a coupling to glue onto it and the end attaches to the new piping that you are going to install.

    Very nice demo! I noticed that the trap size is the same with the sink's tail piece,here in nyc the code calls next size up (1 1/4" tail piece to 1 1/2" trap and so on) never the same size.Thanks.

    Enjoying your plumbing videos! I'm curious about lack of union or the ability to remove the p-trap. Does the p-trap cleanout plug remove the need for any disassembly?
