    The dishwasher connect should be fitted at a 45°. And a sure vent at the clean out. Pretty much just twist the dw wye to 45° and take off the cleanout fitting and put a wye with a sure vent on the vertical and a cleanout cap on the diaganal and youre set. Very good job dude. Also remember to have a minimum 1/8" slope going towards where the waters going so it actually drains. Again. Good job. Cheers

    Tip: The best way to test for leaks is to fill the sink with water and then let it drain. This will expose leaks more than just running water into the sink.

    I think you need the dishwasher discharge port to be on a vertical piece between your drain and trap. If it works fine on the horizontal I wouldn't worry about it, though.

    • @BeckVMH
      @BeckVMH 4 года назад +1

      @Aaron Kaase... That is my understanding based on researching my attempt to connect my dishwasher to the existing pipes (after getting rid of my garbage disposal). I was trying to determine how to tie the dishwasher drain line to the existing pipes and that required the piece with the port.
      If situated as shown 4:08, on the horizontal plane, there is a chance for back wash. This may work, but might not be best or code. Also, told this by a licensed plumber assuming I understood his explanation. But... I'm a novice. Just a recommendation to viewers to research this and draw your own conclusion.

    Bill Wardhaugh. 2018-01-23:
    Thanks for a super video and clear precise instructions - easy to follow (good teacher). My problem in our new kitchen is this: The Contractors site Manager insisted there is no problem after he did the 'swirl test' (half fill the sink, remove the plug, and when you see the draining water swirl, it shows all is fine)
    Every time our washing machine discharges water it flows up into the sink (about half inch deep). Needless to say this is dirty water and we are sure should not be in the sink. It never happened before. The 8 inch long horizontal pvc waste pipe after the U trap is one inch higher than the pvc pipe entering the U trap which has the washing machine inlet on. I believe this is the problem as it's easier for the water flow from the washing machine to go up into the sink - then go out the normal waste pipe. I would appreciate your comment on this. Thanks for reading it.

    • @BenjaminSahlstrom
      @BenjaminSahlstrom  6 лет назад

      I've never heard of the "swirl" test. Sounds like a good way to convince someone it's working when in your case there are still problems.
      It's hard to picture exactly what you have going on but in any case you should not have water coming back up a drain from another source. It sounds like the drain line that the sink and washer connect to may be restricted somehow so possibly cabling that out would help. I'm assuming there is a separate washing machine standpipe or were you meaning to talk about a dishwasher connection like what is in my video?
      Hope you get it figured out!

    • @renhoek7531

    Before you whine about there being no vent please note:
    There IS A VENT. It is hooked up under the floor and no, it's not to exact code but it IS VENTED. NO ISSUES WITH THE SETUP WHATSOEVER. The only reason I did not put a typical loop vent under the sink was to save space and I realized that there was some small potential of needing to add one later if I had issues with siphoning. Using 2" instead of 1 1/2" for the drain helps prevent the siphoning issue for the couple of feet until the drain is vented. This video was meant to show how a vent can work in a unique situation. If you want your setup to meet code technically then you'll need to make a loop vent under the peninsula/island and provide cleanouts adequate to maintain the system.
    I explain it more in this video:
    ruclips.net/video/7L8OVOVvzAA/видео.html
    Thanks for watching!

    • @erictold
      @erictold 6 лет назад +3

      It's a "S-Trap", which is not legal. Even if you have a vent under the cabinet, you need a vent at the tee, not under the cabinet. You don't need the clean-out because you can easily disassemble the trap whenever you need.

  • @edmottwiler7116
    @edmottwiler7116 4 года назад +5

    this is an excellent example of how NOT to install a sink drain. the P-trap that ties into the larger drain (without a vent) has actually created an s- trap which is NOT allowed by any plumbing code because it will siphon the waste out of the p-trap rendering it useless. also never connect the waste from the dishwasher to the disposer or the drain line. the waste from the dishwasher ALWAYS connects to an air-gap fitting above the flood rim or the sink...WHY you might ask, what happens when your sink stops up with dirty water and backs up into your dishwasher full of dishes that you assume are clean?

    • @BenjaminSahlstrom
      @BenjaminSahlstrom  4 года назад +2

      Exactly! This example was not to code as you mention but it works perfectly. It does not siphon even when you drain a full sink of water since there is enough space in that short piece of 2" pipe going through the floor that there isn't enough volume to create a vacuum since the line is vented tight under the floor. With the dishwasher situation again you are correct but the likelihood of the backup happening in that way is very very low.
      Again, technically you are correct but this method does work.

    Hi, thanks for the video! In our situation there is a single basing sink with of course a single sink drain. Can you advise parts needed in this regard with one sink drain instead of a dual basin sink drain arrangement? Is the tail piece for dishwasher designed to direct water towards direction of the drain/trap line?

    • @beckyschwantes5287
      @beckyschwantes5287 2 года назад

      The piece he had all the way to the left has a baffle so water is directed down and the pipe should be at a slope to keep the dishwasher drainage headed for the p trap
      So if you only have one basin they make a tailpiece that has a dishwasher drain nipple on the vertical drop. Just come down hit your P trap and into the sanitary tee. Put a wye fitting on top on the sanitary tee. The vertical section u will install a vent and on the 45 degree you will install a clean out

  • @Bakin
    @Bakin 3 года назад +1

    The fact that the waste line going through the floor is much larger in diameter than the line to which the garbage disposal discharges, the line going through the floor will not be full and because of that no siphon affect will result when discharging. That is why that line had been deliberately over sized; to prevent a siphon since there is no vent in the island. That is why the installer says it works fine. That’s my thoughts.

    • @BenjaminSahlstrom
      @BenjaminSahlstrom  6 лет назад +2

      Joe Tennies You would be correct assuming that you don't have an island or peninsula vent already set up as I do. If you use a peninsula/island vent then you don't need an air admittance valve. The reason the latter is not used more often is because in most states they don't satisfy code requirements.
      Thanks for your comment!!

    • @jonathangreenawalt5724
      @jonathangreenawalt5724 4 года назад +4

      @AGENT 47 I was referring to venting after the p-trap. The purpose of the air valve is so that a vent stack does not need to be installed. Without some sort of venting the chance of siphoning will occur draining part of the p-trap allowing gasses to seep past and up the drains. Not to mention according to Title 24 CFR § 3280.606 Traps and cleanouts.
      (a) Traps - (1) Traps required. ..."All traps shall be effectively vented". (Source: Law.cornell.edu) Unless the vent closest to the p-trap is within the maximum distance according to your area. So installing a air valve where the pipe cleanout plug is advised. The drain tap into sink drain is fine, according to PA a high drain loop is satisfactory, but still look at the code for your areas. The single p-trap for these drains still needs venting. Also I am unsure, due to I am unable to see clearly the p-trap/drain connect venting also needs to be 2 pipe thicknesses away as to avoid creating an S-trap instead. please see: waterheatertimer.org/images/andi-plumbing-add-a-vent5-23-update2-585.jpg

      My exact thought. Never installed a tailpiece gasket upside down.

    The flange washers (which look like top hats) were installed upside down.

    Bought this kit and there is a part missing. The piece for the smooth side of the dishwasher drain piece that has an adapter to screw it together is not in the kit 😢

    it appears you don't have a vent pipe there... well, you do, but you have capped it off.. it's the pipe on the left.. that needs to have a vent cap on it.. not capped.

    I wish things worked that easy for me. he hee This dam sink is Cruised > so again i had to tackle it. I retiled the counter top! Wouldn't you know it started leaking for NO DAM REASON! 🤬 and the dam water valves want shut off. 😒 MORE AND MORE MONEY! So, I replace every dam thing again! When i do some thing i do it RIGHT 👍 So a simple take out and install, costed 200 bucks

    No vent. Not code.

  • @MrItsthething
    @MrItsthething 5 лет назад +3

    This isn't to code. You need to install an autovent where you have the plug.

      @Grumpy this video a totally gives a much needed idea for us folks with deep sinks where the drain was stubbed out "according to code/standards".
      I'm about to put in an S trap and poke mine thru the floor due to the same issue.

    Your video includes both plumbing code and function problems. Your high hat washer is upside down. Your dishwasher tail piece must not be horizontal.
