  • 3 Main Problems Explained! This was made by an amateur who learned some things & is sharing them in an easy to understand way! I had 3 major problems that I came across when replacing the PVC Pipes under my kitchen sink. First were the washers / gaskets: There were 2 different kinds a flanged washers and smooth 1 1/2" washers. The directions on the bag from Home Depot did not explain well enough what to do with these! Secondly: How to connect a threaded PVC pipe to a Non-Threaded PVC Pipe... that one took a while! Thirdly: How to attach Dishwasher Attachment to the pipes under the sink. I hope the things I learned can help you with your DIY project under the kitchen sink. This video Includes the P-Trap, center joints and arms w/ Dishwasher Attachment. Just one stay at home mom taking on another house repair project! Hope this video helps you repair your leaky sink pipes!

Of all the darned "expert" plumbing videos on this topic, yours is the best. There's not one that explains that flat tail piece washer vs. the beveled, smooth washer. I went to the hardware store to get help and I was given the correct metal washer to connect to the strainer, but it had the wrong washer! So since I'm no expert plumber, of course I thought the guy gave me the correct stuff and I struggled with it, driving me mad! I realized there had to be a different shaped washer. You verified it for me and made me sane again.
Thank you for the video and your attention to detail!

Thank you! I was about to hire a handyman bc my stepdad has "fixed" every sink in their house and they all leak now. I watched this video and have fixed them! It was a washer issue. I think he was placing them in the nut and sliding them onto the smooth end. I placed them directly on the smooth end and slid them up higher instead and so far, no leaks.

Thank you so much and Happy Mothers day. I'm a guy that doesn't read instructions but did this time as you were the instructions. This was awesome and answered all my questions without any useless blather. I was able to replace a leaking cracked and corroded slip nut and all the tailpiece nuts and washers without damaging the rest of my really old (all metal) sink plumbing from this video. Everything has remained dry as a bone for the last few days so it looks like I did it right! I used a small wire brush to clean the grungy threads and was careful not to overtighten the nuts (just 1/4 turn after finger tight). Thank you!

I really like this video, a lot of the other videos were not covering this aspect. I finally found out that the small pvc segment needs that thing you called 'Straight washer'. I now have my shopping list narrowed down to a few washers and a slightly longer PVC segment than I bought.
One of my other projects is to install a dishwasher drain loop, because mine can brings water back to the dishwasher pump. You might want to raise your dishwasher loop higher between the gap of the sink tubs. So go through the sink, next to the faucet knobs. I just want my loop suspending from a high area on the cabinet wall.

Very well explained, especially about washer direction, and you're a girl, I'm really impressed, and here's my long story,
For starters I'm 65 I rebuild automatic transmissions for a living {40 plus yrs} so I'm no stranger to seals and leaks. But as I like to say I'm a mechanic not a plumber,electrician.etc. I am reasonably handy, but I'm no Mr fixit. So anyway, two days ago my wife notices that under the kitchen sink its slightly wet,So yesterday we decide by virtue of years lets replace from the double sink drains down to the pipe in the floor, I disconnect from the sink drains to the floor pipe in one piece,{find the source of my leak} as I say in work the smoking gun.And off to the plumbing supply house {I live in the city,so for plumbing I use a plumbing supply house not home depot, the place Ive been using for 20 plus years with great technical knowledge and good parts closed down about 2 years ago, the owner retired. So this other place was always my backup. So anyway I go into the place yesterday with the entire piece all together so i can have them match it up;{just like in work, lets lay it out and match it up piece by piece the way it goes} Up to the counter,4different guys the one says can I help you, a 30 something, I lay my whole shebang on the counter in one piece and say I need this, His question is what size pipe is that{ut oh} a guy behind him a little older says 1 1/2, OK he knows what hes doing,The first guy goes into the back to get my stuff, I ask guy#2 can you make sure everything is right, stuff comes out, Is everything here, yeah your good, Home I start laying everything out on a table outside, starting at the sink drain I notice right away the piece I have will not mate with the sink drain, trip #2 walking back in guy#2 says whats wrong I know you have everything you need{with a attitude} I show him new piece will not mate here, and I hold up the old piece, like this piece, Oh yeah sorry ,I forgot about that piece, you'll also need the 2 extra nuts and straight washers{like the video}Ok can we lay this out now and make sure ? no need to you're good, get home lay everything out cut the one universal piece I just got and for the sink drain side everything is fine, except now for the other end I need 2 additional nuts and smooth gaskets, trip #3 right thru the door, now what wrong I know you got everything I"m sure ,what about connecting the other end 2 nuts and smooth washers, oops sorry,So this time I get 2 extras of nuts and 2 straight and 2 smooth washers,
Back home everything fits, goes right together, snug everything down by 2 PM, no leaks first try Last night at 8PM my wife notices a little water, I must have given those nuts almost close to another 1/4 turn, I had those things dam tight,I'm assuming the gaskets compressing,
This morning I wanted to go online and confirm I had my washers in the correct direction,I was ready for a grueling search and don't you know this was first video I saw!
Hat's off to this young lady for a clear and precise video,It answered my questions on washer direction,I originally had mine in the right way.But now I definitely know they are right, another day or 2 of leak checking and maybe nut snugging ,then my wife can put all her stuff back. Once again thank you sweetie,in 2021 it took a girl to give me the definite answer's i couldn't get from 2 or 3 guys that work at a plumbing supply house

Very well done!! You made it easy for me to remember what the "smooth" washers are for! Thanks for posting. :)

Maybe an explanation of why you need the small extender piece right before attaching the pipe to the bottom of the sink rather than hooking it up directly. Also, the reason (when and where) you use the smooth washer vs the straight/flat washer. Great video that answered all the questions I did have.
