  • How to change a Kitchen sink drain will show you which basket strainer (drain) is best to use and how sometimes it can be very challenging to get the old basket strainer out of the kitchen sink. It is important to have Pipe Thread sealant, Plumbers Putty, couple of screw drivers and a couple of pair of Channel locks will usually get the trick done. In this case you will see how we had to use a Dremel (Rotary tool) to remove the old basket strainer/drain.

Thank you. I watched lots of videos on kitchen sink strainer replacements; yours was easiest to follow, and one of the only ones to rank the different types of strainer. All of your tips answered the questions i was left with after watching other videos on the subject. While I am happy to call a plumber for issues with pipes under my house, I was very happy to be able to solve this issue for less than $20 and with my own hands. Thanks, again!

I found this video very helpful, as I am new to this particular plumbing task. I am replacing a broken disposal with a sink strainer. Explaining the terminology is helpful, not everyone uses the term sink strainer, so knowing it is also called a basket strainer helps. Explaining the three types of them was also helpful. It's easier to buy parts, when you know at least some of the buzzwords and the different types. The tips for attaching the strainer were also helpful. I watched several other videos and only this one had tips for attached the gaskets and testing for leaks at the gasket securing the strainer to the sink. The link to the basket strainer on amazon, however, had a note that the product has higher than average returns; I didn't sift thru the comments for the particulars.

i should note that while I agree with you that double cup is the best for install and keeping that rubber gasket from being damaged, i have noted over the decades that the corrosion you saw is common in double cup strainer baskets. I usually dont see that with the large ring nut versions, and with the screw down ones (I dont like the screw down ones which depend on a flimsy isolateral triagular plane.).

I wish all sinks had deeper indentions to place the strainer in, like your sink in this video. It has to be easier to keep the strainer centered when tightening from below. The double sink I got doesn't have the high "walls" for the strainer to sit in. It has wide, slightly sloping "slides." It was a pain to try to keep the strainer centered (which I couldn't do) while I held it from above with one hand and tightened from below with my other hand. I got a tool a while back like the one you used to hold the strainer in place from above, but the sink holes were too far apart so I couldn't use it. I'm 67, and hoping at least there will be no leaking. Waste pipe coming out of wall doesn't line up with the holes of the new sink so I bought a second package of pipes. Im putting together a puzzle. 😢😂 Wish me luck. Also, the washers in the package from Home Depot that go on the pipes are not whitish like in the video. I already had some from a package of pipes from Walmart. The Home Depot washers are thinner and orange and lose their shape too easily. The white ones are much better.

You should have showed people to turn off the shut off valves to be on the safe side. Things could be messy with water all over the place. One other way to remove those nuts is spray with 40 it works and saves a lot of time . Other wise great job.

I am gonna respectfully disagree with the suggestion of turning off the stops on this one my friend. Let me explain. My humble opinion on this subject is this could lead to much more trouble than a person might expect. If the stops are old and the washers have disintegrated when they turn the faucet on those pieces of washer can lodge in there and cause many different problems. We actually have a video about just this subject , and a short. Please don’t get me wrong, we truly appreciate you watching our video and leaving us a comment. Thank you!!!
