I have four choices on RUclips for this particular job. This Old House every time. My job turned out perfectly. Each one of these guys, in their own specialty, is an expert. Old school East Coast craftsman, each and every one of them.
Richard saw that low water pressure and was thinking, "let me get out of here, before she asks about this"..........
EPA inspired restrictor on water supply to faucets.
@@robertf6344 My daughter bought one at the box store a 1.2 GPM and all I got was a trickle took it back for a 2.2 GPM.
Trump.talked about this lol @chevy6299
Her: What's "pop metal"?
Richard: Oh you know, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison, Ratt...
An oscillating tool would get that off just fine. No torch needed. All due respect, Richard. Regards, a fellow Master Plumber.
But. Fire!
This video was great! I realized I was adding both the compression washer and top hat which caused a leak. Great and clear explanation by Richard.
Richard is such a nice guy, I really want to meet him in real life, but that impossible, cause I live in Lithuania ;( well, someday maybe in the future. . . Just can't stop watching ThisOldHouse. . . everyday in the evening I watch this show on pc
loþus
Richard loves you buddy. Don't ever forget that. He'll come visit you soon. Take care
I am sure that you can meet nice plumbers and even carpenters in Lithuania, you'll be fine.
Just a pinch quick to have not explained the lower rubber & paper gasket. Also,I would have cleaned that pvc piping and joints a bit,to avoid any contaminants breaching to seals. Great job!
Love Richard from This Old House,he is such a gentleman and savvy !
He didn't actually melt the pot metal piece with the torch. He heated so it expanded away, so he could pull it out. 👍👍👍
I’m shocked that he did not explain that both the strainer and the dishwasher connection areas need to be cleaned , and free of any old rust debris’s Etc. Any impediment has the potential to not let washers ( sealing area ) , not properly seal . And also never over tighten on any plastic fittings ! Remember their PVC …. They crack easy
Though it may be unlikely to leak, (he probably knows that from experience) I agree with cleaning the two connections. Better to have clean surfaces. He did say 'don't over tighten the plastic nuts.'
I love this old house been watching since i was in elementary school
Thanks Richard this will help me I have a sink with out a ring or putty I will have to get some to fix it.
Ha... let me "run" to the truck! Yeah, right.
Excellent step by step directions. Worked like a charm. Thank you!
@Dmac 740 Thanks for your expertise and kindness.
Just had this happen. But had a water leak sensor so I heard the alarm and was able to replace it before any damage was done
Very helpful! Thanks for sharing this.
now that the drain is fixed are you going to help her on the low water pressure.
no.
kodiak wild why
Haha I was thinking the same thing. That water pressure is so low if that was on full.
They have a water eco thing installed. I had to swap ours out when moving in to get usable pressure.
Why don’t they ever blame the guy that pulled the monitors out of the Wuhan lab?
Plumber: "Just grab about a third of it and roll it around in your hands."
Woman: "Oh yeah, all the time"
P: "Now just hold back against me!"
W: "I can see it coming out."
P: "This is what the last guy didnt do."
W: "I feel it getting tight."
P: "Im done..."
Burn The Obedient Bahahaha
😂
How does a person turn watching a sink strainer being replaced turn it sexual??!!?? Guys have such dirty minds! bleh!!
Excellent job !!!
Great video thanks for shearing your knowledge
Thank you for the video
Awesome job
And while the sink is filling lets go have some coffee and sandwiches...
Clean up nicely
When they fix the simplest thing the owners like “OMG THIS IS AMAZING”
really good video. thank you.
I had to replace one in my sink. The nut wouldn’t budge. We used WD40. Then we tried 3 in 1 oil. Nada. Then the torch. Nope. I retrieved my DeWalt oscillating saw, put in a metal blade and cut that sucker off. Bada bing, bada boom. 😊I feel so accomplished now.
Grinders also work pretty good.
Ty!
This is the way
I love plumbing.
Said no homeowner DIYer ever! 😅
❤ thank you
Looks like whoever put that strainer in before was an OAF job (On a Friday approaching beer o'clock)
I always tear-up the paper friction disc and/or the paper friction disc gets wet, and then tears. Tend to also overly tighten the rubber gasket too tight. Guessing, all of my problems might be due to the light weight stain-free putty squeezing all out, and maybe using a better plumber's putty such as Hercules Sta-Put putty.
Plumbers have to touch the nastiest stuff I guess they become immune to it.
They get used to it over time
"We can do this the right way or we can do this the fun way..." Grabs the torch. " fun way it is" :)
5:24 my girl when I get home
This comment is underrated
Good
The ladies rolling the putty is always a good move.

@@odoroussmegma2191 your name says it all. Loser.
3:11 IT’S NAHT A TOOMAHHH!
How can anybody give this a thumbs down?
wow, lucky him, for show time, that nut loosened right up. Meanwhile, in the real world, get your Dremel out with a metal cutting blade. That nut on the drain are always corroded together so tight, Thor's hammer couldn't break it free.
Right???
I have a fairly new steel queen sink and there is no large nut underneath the basket strainer to undo in order to get the basket out !! It is built of plastic underneath and there seems to be a factory set metal grommet that you can see from the top which turns when I turn the plastic underneath while I'm holding the basket firmly. How can I remove this?
I bet her and her husband put that last sink drain in. 😆
she is saying ok way too much too 😂😂
lmao. Seems like a homeowner thing to do on this show.
I'm a little confused. I'm a welder by trade and we were always told that "Pot Metal" is actually die cast zinc. Zinc does not rust so that lower bell is actually galvanized steel, not pot metal.
As I said before, I am a welder by trade but I also hold a Pipe Fitter/Steam Fitter ticket and I can tell you, as far as that two screw driver thing is concerned, please, just go to Home Depot, Lowes or some other outlet and buy the correct tool for like five bucks. Only rank amateurs would do it like this. One of the reasons tradesman seem to be capable of doing a better job is they learned a long time ago that jack knife fixes and methods probably ruin as much material as they actually get installed. Using two screw drivers like this runs the risk of damaging or warping the strainer/stopper bell and it could leak or not work at all since there is no guarantee that you will have equal pressure of the two opposing spokes. If you want your work to look and be professional, buy or rent the proper tools and the work goes faster and the parts don't get broken or damaged. The other benefit of having the right tool is you will always have it when the same job needs to be done again or you might even to be able to make a couple of bucks fixing your neighbours sinks.
The trouble with high end tools is that they are expensive, get misplaced, or bust. Sometimes you got to go with the army you have.
Do you need the putty if the basket comes w/2 gaskets?
No.
Some pros never use putty around sinks!!!
Sooo wut did you do with the brass nut that came with the new strainer?..my old pipes wont screw on the new strainer
Next maybe you could fix the poor water pressure.
It clearly is being caused by the small spout on the tap so it cannot be changed
I tried to take off the lock nut from a deepcup strainer but he locknut was stuck and it was very tight
I think old Rich takes every opportunity to get the ladies to make putty snakes :)
0:12 I have 2 of those glass ornaments too
Richard, get one of Ridgid's sink/basin wrenches.
I had to use drill to address lock nut. It worked as well. Good gosh..... -)
"we found some rust" Richard: "thats the sink's drain."
How do you measure the proper size strainer basket that you need? Mine says 4.5” on tape measure but I’m reading most are standard 3.5” 🤷🏼♀️🥺
I believe they are a standard size. If not buy both and save the receipt for the one that you don't need so that you can return it. You never want to be running to the hardware store while doing a plumbing job.
how long do you wait before testing it? does the plumber's putty have to set?
Plumbers putty remains soft a very long time.....it is putty not an adhesive. Mine has started to dry up in the container after almost 10 years.
Test right away, does not have to set up
But it creeps
Me and Molly we just learn something, lol
Is Plumbers Putty better than silicone?
A kitchen sink is a high use item and heavy stuff gets dropped in there sometimes too.
Yes, much better. You'll get air gaps and inconsistencies with silicone.
Wow, that fridge doors.
recently replaced both basket strainers in the kitchen. 6 months later, both leaked. I have watched a video that used the rubber washer on the top instead of plumbers putty. This does make sense to me as the putty seems to dry and harden. Also, washing dishes and pans seem to deflect the bottom of the sink and further compromise the putty seal. Do you have a comment about the practice of putting the black rubber gasket in the sink and then put the basket through the gasket?
Plumbers putty shouldn't dry out. It's specifically made to stay flexible for about 10 years.
0:45 what is pot metal? I had the very same question.
There is no such thing as pot metal. But, many people do use the term. Richard described it as scrap metal, as if scrap is inferior. Actually, most steel is made with a given percentage of scrap and that process produces very good steel. So, bottom line is that the rusted part was simply cheap, unprotected steel that will indeed rust out over time.
It's common slang for cheap cast metal. That was not cast.
Omg how did he do that
Charge a dollar more and make it out of all Stainless Steel, it'll last forever and always be able to be serviced.
Speaking of stainless steel, GM did a recall on my 2003 Silverado. Apparently, some genius there thought they could save money by changing the stainless steel tailgate cables to galvanized steel ones. Well, low and behold, the galvanized ones began to corrode and break. So GM did a recall to swap them back to stainless.
@@AStanton1966 An Old Man once said to me "Rust Is My Enemy"........He sounded a little crazy when he said it but as time goes by I tend to think he was exactly right.
Then people might not notice a leak because it won't rust. At least the rust will motivate them to fix it haha.
Bizarre looking at this from Australia. I can't imagine any sink parts being anything other than stainless steel or PVC for at least 40 years.
exactly I always use abs which is black pipe and glue same as PVC except it's black just got to have the right glue. I have always done it that way I don't use those crappy little playschool white pipe parts
@@kennyslaughenhaupt3839 Yep I'm sure they also used ABS here ( and I forgot about brass and copper). I think my point was more that I was surprised that they would have iron/steel based plumbing fittings that are clearly going to rust, in anything installed in the last 40 years
@@MartinVisser here in the US , all the lock nuts are brass, but the rest is garbage. I got lucky today in Lowe's I found a guy who actually knew what he was talking about but that is a rarity very very rare and a big box store
I love how he always says „deez nuts“ in every video
As Steve L. would say, "Richard had to give it the Old Gunday!"
I always run into these problems solid frozen joints ,nuts, etc. U need always a risky flameflower!!!
"Now I'm free to loosen that nut."
find u someone who looks at you like 3:47
You didn't even clean the surfaces of the sink and underneath before attaching the new drain basket. Also, please clean joints before rejoining. I wish more plumbers do clean/neat/proper jobs (They're very rare). It only takes a short time to clean off old putty and dirt.
The sink surface above was cleaned. Compare before 3:25 and after 4:14
I can’t believe he didn’t clean the pipes.
Looks like they had a renovation done...why would you not install all new plumbing under the sink???
That homeowner or contractor....did that HALF ASSED !!! Many do this...so later they get a call back to make more $$$.
I also see this with a caulking job...looks like a 2 year old applied it . Very sloppy.
Thats just not right !!!
What's the cure time for plumbers putty?
Cure time not applicable. Install and ready to use.
sure is clean under there for such a rusty strainer
As per instructions: Use approximately 3 tbsp of plumber's putty...
Richard: Grab about a third of that cup....
I really wonder how much putty he uses in a year lol
It squeezes out when you compress the fitting and you just put it back in the tub.
@@wbfaulk good point.
"Let me just catch that nut"....lmao #Dead
5:24 my ear couldn't miss it
oh good we found the one house where there was absolutely nothing underneath the kitchen sink
and if I don't have a torch in my back pocket?
Steve Lavi would be wearing gloves......
Why would he wear gloves?
The others i watch. It showed cleaning around sink strainer. Before you put the putty and strainer in the sink. Yours did not show that.
Bruh he starts just going to town with that torch and doesn’t protect the cabinet floor. HA. enjoy burn marks lady lol.
The nut is broken off , so it just spins . How do I take it off then ?
"Grab about a 1/3 of that can of putty" HOLY PUTTY THAT IS ALOT OF PUTTY!
He didn’t explain the washer gaskets that go first
Molly could have fixed this herself by, well, watching a RUclips video, of course
I keep hoping someday Richard will pull up a RUclips video of himself and use that to demonstrate to a homeowner what they're about to do to their house
"Cuz deez Nuts....are plastic."
How do you do a plumbing video about replacement of drainage without showing a trap and explaining its function?
Also, buy a disposal?
Here we go again with plumbers putty.. What is the purpose of gaskets? Some places you cant find plumbers putty.. 😉
What's up with her water pressure?
Modern faucets are designed to be slower in flow to save on water consumption
@@stephensnell1379 I don't think so. The good ones use an aerator, so you won't notice. But if the aerator is blocked, limed up for example, this will reduce the water flow massively as you can see here:
ruclips.net/video/04cP-xkIGy0/видео.html
How would one decrease their water pressure? I think mine might be too high
@@bryan554 Pressure reducing valve:
www.wattscanada.ca/images/aux_images/learnabouts/reducingvalves/PG-PRV04.gif
The pressure is set with the screw above the spring.
@@bryan554 If it's splashing, you might not have an aerator. make sure you have one in place. or if it's a modern faucet, it could be switched to no-aeration position. Beyone that, if you have your own water pump system (not municipal), the pressure is easily adjustable on the pressure switch.
This video shows American sinks are way different than UK sinks
How do people's drain pipes get so dirty?
It was leaking?
Would you please come to my house and fix my drains??
Pliers on a plastic nut makes me cringe. If you are not used to working with plastic nuts, do not use a pair of pliers to tighten them.
Only came to read comments about how Richard is doing this all wrong.
You're in luck!
Could be much of that rust came from heavy use of corrosive liquid drain clog dissolvers.
He said catch that nut
The fridge isn't level.
Dang and I spend a lot of time bragging on this guy. It’s a shame even he doesn’t know what putty lock is. Got to pull strainer body down and remove putty from underneath before inserting nut. Even old plumbers don’t know this. I love “this old house “.
We need to make a really nice water tight connection
Doesn't clean old putty
If you watched it properly they did clean it out
Sink surface above was cleaned. Compare before 3:25 and after 4:14
@@flat-earther regardless its a step thst wasn't shown, and likely one of the most important parts
Call me picky. i just did my sink strainer and replaced all the pvc because it looked old. Cheap enough to replace.
