Have been vw all my driving life 45 plus years, cars and vans. Owned 2021 Ford transit with an auto box , and I was shocked at how good this van was. It felt solid and everything about it felt quality. Have ceased now with brand loyalty and source my vehicles on value for money, reliability and suitability.
Great video lads 👍 As an engineer in R&D, it’s interesting reading people’s comments who don’t really understand how the automotive industry works. It’s an expensive game, and with cars/vans becoming more and more advanced and more expensive to manufacture you start to see stuff like this happening more often. Thing is, it’s not the first time VW have done this either, and it’s not the first Vw to be manufactured elsewhere - in fact a lot of VW and Audi models aren’t built in Germany. I’m interested to see how reliable the new unit is with this wet belt system. But people act like VW transporters are the most reliable things in the world and they’re really not (not from my experience owning T4, T5.1 & T6 any way). I’ve spent a few quid fixing them I’ll tell you, but T4 was probably my most reliable out the 3. Not to mention they’ve been using the same platform for the last 22 years with what has largely been facelifts & engine changes whilst other companies have made significant changes to their lineup. I’m keeping an open mind on it. I’m not in a position where I’ll be able to afford and experience one for a while but I’m looking forward to seeing them on the road and listening to owners’ feedback 👍
I think most people do understand how the car industry works, we have all noticed vehicles using the same platform, particularly in the van market. We all saw this coming when the Amarok got deleted, now a Ranger. This was an inevitable consequence of VW exiting the market due to the prospect of lekki van competition and the e-transporter flopped. One less R&D team to pay for too.
I totally agree. Great comments raised there. My Transporters over the years have had their fair share of issues too. We only get to hear about the most common one though. The Ford wet belt issue is spoken about a lot. 90% of these people's mates, cousins, husbands, bothers mate had a Transit that's wet belt went. When you dive into these actual issues, maintenance and usage are key. I'll be making sure our new Transporters and serviced and maintained to VW's recommendations. If so, any issues will be covered under the VW warranty.
@@THQAutomotive Add to that - for 'quality' that people go on about in Transporters, my 2022 Highline 6.1 misses quite a bit of spec when compared to my stock 2018 pre-facelift limited Transit Custom, no climate control, no heated seats, bare bulkhead. My T5.1 (before the Transit) was worse still. Overall - my 2018 Transit Custom was quieter, better to drive as an off the shelf offering, didn't clang like the standard 6.1 does.. All fixable, but it was not lightyears ahead in terms of quality - I have had more trouble with VW's and hear lots of horror stories of VW's being on their 3rd, 4th, 5th engine... The new owner of my old transit is still happily ticking by in it. The saving in outsourcing allows more kit to be standard fit in the Transporter (as is the case in the new shape Transit), which I see as a good thing - you get the backing of a wider platform with the combined might of 2 major automotive brands and a little ability to make it feel a bit more 'VW'
Exactly correct. The current VW Transporter has numerous issues, many of which are expensive to repair. ECU faults, sensor faults, and the big one if you want an auto, DSG gearbox issues which have horrific repair cost potential. Combine 4-Motion and DSG and you are buying a vehicle which may come with huge future repair costs.
@THQAutomotive we'll buy a vito or whatever the best alternative is. Even if we were considering the new transporter, there's no point in buying the VW if the Ford is exactly the same but cheaper.
@@ChristoffelsteinI don't believe it will be cheaper though. As I say in the video, their spec's won't cross over. Example, right now an Amarok is cheaper than a ranger if you like higher spec (which I do) I'd expect the same with the custom and new Transporter. I'd also rather have VW software over Ford. Personal choice though I guess.
The filming was easy, hats off to Massimo for editing it all in 2 days. He spent the whole day in the hotel room today editing (which is like a prison cell) while we went back to the show. We then returned with more footage to add. He still managed to get it all done ready to upload tonight.
I’ll be keeping my T6.1 personally. When I bought a new shape Caddy that is also a Ford collaboration I sold it after 3 months as I didn’t think the build quality was good enough. I had the feeling they aren’t going to age well and will depreciate too much as a result. I’ve owned Volkswagens up to now because they hold their value and I’m not convinced these new generation Transporters will hold their value.
Yes we know it has a wet belt. A wet belt is used in multiple engines. Ford just had a problem with how they have used it. VW seem confident with their testing and whatever changes Ford needed to do, to stop their issues.
Great question. Theft from vans will never cease, so you would hope this was part of the design brief. That said I was on the M25 car park tonight and I saw a brand new transit with a big tear in the sliding door next to the lock, clearly a break in, so fear not.
I've repaired my neighbours mobile locksmith who uses a ford transit custom and it was literally opened up like a can of beans with a grinder ir maybe a can opener ... so thin its quite hard to weld the panels back together ( ended up reinforcing it with cement board as grinders can cut one or the other but not both.... like a safe)
Thanks guys for the excellent video, for all us who are looking at this new t7/transporter it nice to see an in depth video by people we know and trust to give an accurate, as it is review. Think you covered all we need to know. Just that wet belt to find more about.
I’ve got a 72 ford transit with a wet belt, it’s done 100k miles with no problems, apparently the belt edges where when new and bits block the oil pick up, but the first couple of services sort this out by oil and filter changes.
I heard something about the belt deteriorating in the dirty oil, also the lack of oil changes causing dpf issues causing oil dilution and deteriorating the belt. Servicing is the issue.
@exploresandtosummit I think 2016-2018 there was a bit of a issue however I think a lack of maintenance and long service intervals made it worse. From 2000-2016 transit had a chain that had a 160k interval iirc so alot of average operators wouldn't have thought twice about their new 2016 + transit needing a belt change
Oil dilution is the issue for the petrol engined Ford’s with the wet belt, for the diesels it’s a lot more complicated. But basically the belt chemistry has to deal with oil immersion and all belts wear to one degree or another. Ford just overestimated the life of that belt, driven by a desire to be competitive on running costs, whilst adhering to the eco and noise regulations, which is why they went with the wet belt.
The likely improvement to the current engine, is to make replacing the belt cheaper and easier. Then set maybe a 40k mile replacement schedule for the belt. When the service schedules are published we should be able to see this. Operators of large van contracts and the lease companies will want the whole life service costs before they set their figures.
@@THQAutomotive Yeah but surely it'll just corrode the socket quicker... And no doubt someone will not close the flap properly and drive off and it'll break... Car designers grind my gears... Remember when ford decided to use a key opener thing to open the bonnet? They all broke eventually... Kak idea...
Great video for providing the audience with the information on this new collaboration with Ford and the cross overs between the product. I do however think this will be the end of the following that VW have had with the proper Transporter T series. I get the fact that times need to move on and the chassis is 22 years old etc but it works (if it’s not broke don’t fix it). People love the T5-T6.1 even if it is just a facelift between the years and the odd change here and there, a proper built vehicle by Volkswagen themselves is what people want to pay the premium for. The transit will be the option for anyone wanting to go this route now unfortunately.
Having owned a new Transit and seen the new Transporter, I'd buy the Transporter and not just for the badge. They are finished better and better equipped. There does seem to be a difference in finish coming off the 2 different production lines. Yes they are now made in Turkey for affordability, but VW are controlling the production. I'd personal rather a Turkish built Transporter than a German built vehicle at a considerable premium.
I have a few T6.1's, they are my favourite of that chassis (expect the T5 pre facelift itself) but they will have to go in time. The T7 / New Transporter will replace them all. End of an era, but I'm excited by it. Can't wait to get stuck into them and make them even better.
I have a t6.1 too I have had 6 months from new. It’s a good question, my plan is that this van will last at least 6-7 years if not more. By then the Ford /VW arrangement will be over. There are too many compromises.
Same here 👌🏻 treated myself to a sportline. Hoping it’ll last a good 20 years, I’ll be happy to have the engine and every nut and bolt replaced a couple times instead of taking the t7
I got one of the last T6.1's as well with a high top even though they stopped doing them six months after i placed my order. Thankfuly they honoured my order. The van is for my business and purchased knowing this was coming. I had to wait 2 years and 3 months for delivery. I'm so pleased with it and fortunately it will see me out so to speak.
Great video guys, thank you. Made me feel alot better about them tbh. Can't wait to get our hands on one and have a drive. Some of the Transit features like the load through hatch and folding roof rack are great additions, and ones that the Transporter needed.
Fave had several Fords, change wet belt before 200k km and there are no problems with it. Have had problems with private garages serivicing the belt, so this job only at dealer.
With colour coded bumpers, lowered and 20” wheels it’ll probably look good. Only time will tell how good the engine is. I think a lot of people will wait to see if it’s reliable.
Brilliant guys. I live very close to you and have purchased various parts of you and love what you do with the honesty and information. Keep it up guys and stay safe.
keeping my t6.1 for the next decade no worries.... knew when I bought it it would be the last !! customising my pedal power van around town.... 4 wheel e bike that carries 300kg.... keeping my van just in case !!
I have always been VW , had all the transporters and caddy’s , still have a modified t6.1 what I love . Bought the new custom for work and as a van it’s good , but the engine is a let down . Massively notice it is different . Loud , sluggish and lacks response . Luckily I have a sport mode I can put it in and then it drives a little better . My custom has a 136ps 2.0ltr engine - needs improving IMO . I’m not really fussed about the wet belt thing , keep on top of the servicing , and it’s not different at to any lottery with a mechanical engine IMO . New van looks great I think a lot of VW enthusiasts will hate the engine . All I can say is it drives like a transit because what I have is a transit . If VW can make it drive differently they are in for a winner . I’d rather drive my t6.1 over the new platform , no amount of features will change that .
I'm a VW fan through and through. Several Transporters a Polo, Golf, Scirocco etc. I dont mind paying the extra for German quality, unfortunately I'm probably the minority. I wish VW well with this venture. I have seen a similar scenarios with Motorcycles, example Honda having bikes made in Thailand and BMW having bikes made in India. Let me tell you, they are never as good.
Well done lads , very good video, very helpful. I have a T6.1 and ordering a new van. I was on the line of of switching to Merc because of the Ford/VW but this video has changed me back to VW Keep up the good work lads ...Philip (Dublin)
30K jobs on the line in VW atm, plus an extra possible 20K jobs, Changed their CEO recently, Electric motors from Taiwan, batteries from China, now vehicles manufactured by Ford, dropped €10k on the price of all iD range last month, now isn't a good time to sink money in VW, if it walks like a duck and quacks like duck.... Up the Dubs 🏰🏰🏰
Reminds me of when the Ford Sierra was launched in the 80’s - jelly mould car and now we have the jelly mould van. The upside for Transporter HQ is there’s huge opportunity to put some cool into the van and give it some T6.x attitude differentiating it significantly from the Transit version.
Thanks for posting, it’s by far the best review currently available. Personally I’d be interested in the BEV if it just had a little more battery capacity; 68 kWh just seems undersized even compared to the IDBuzz at 77. I appreciate a larger battery has an impact on carrying capacity, but some of us need more volume and are less concerned about mass.
Yes i agree. I think long term I'll get the BEV (diesel first as we need an early one for development) I would have liked to have seen at least buzz sized batteries though.
I'm afraid the T6.1 won't be going up in value as much as I'd like to agree. The motor industry doesn't work like that. I own a few so it would have been nice. The T7 / New Transporter will be bought in the thousands because average Joe doesn't care and it's considerable more advanced than the chassis VW have used for 22 years.
I am on my third transporter I have kept them for years put big mileage on all , the one previous to the one I have now I bought with 20k o on the clock ran it for seven years and sold it for exactly what I paid for clocking up 165 k apart from normal service items the only thing replaced was the turbo , the one I have now I bought with 13 k on the clock apart from bits of warranty work it had a duelmass flywheel recently at 130k I was recently offered close to what I paid for it , I have been in the motor trade all my working life now retired, , knowing the problems with that wet belt Ford engine I think VW has dropped clanger , I am a big VW fan but wont be purchasing a new one if it has that engine .
Great video guys. Very informative. It’s definitely a grower. I pick up my new T6.1 on Friday but I’m excited to see how the scene makes the T7 their own! 🤙🏻
Transporters and Kombis cost a fortune 40-50k a van, they ain’t making a loss on these they are making huge losses making things like Buzz’s forcing them onto dealers who are now stuck with them all. Transporters were always built out of Stronger steel than the Transits with better security and don’t rust as quick now it’s all cheap Turkish crap will still charge the VW premium I’m gunna hold onto my T6 Kombi thanks
But what next, it won't last forever? I believe them when they say a T6.1 panel van doesn't make money when built in Germany. As mention VW control their own production line in Turkish. I believe / hope, they'll have the same German standards. I can't comment on the ID-Buzz as I loved mine and have a GTX on order now.
The UK is working hard to phase out the combustion engine, so it's all academic really. Let's not worry about the wet belt, it might be obsolete anyway in a few years. VW got out of the commercial market before lekki vans take over, as VW fear they might flop.
Exactly, must be hard for someone who "relays" on factory models to find out that they blew it...multivan T7 is a thing of beauty compare to this thing..🤥still great job THQ and best of luck...
What's the alternative though? A T6.2 using the same chassis they've used for 22 years? I'm very confident this will take off. I can't wait to get one.
@THQAutomotive true. I think it's just the fact it's a ford in disguise. I agree, the original shape needed a change, but this was a very sharp change. I saw a ford today and compared the pics, it's just a transit with a vw badge. Maybe you'll be able to add your touches like you did the id buzz, and it'll change my mind, but for now, It's a no from me 🫣
@@TheGrapeEscapeVanit is a lot Ford yes, but VW have added a lot in my opinion. It's very VW in styling. It's only the side profile from the behind the drivers door that's the same. The inside and software does feel very VW.
As an owner of both a 2013 T5 and a 2019 transit custom when you come to change the timing belt on them it costs far more in time and cost to do the ford wet belt
Can't remember the mileage intervals but both belts had been on for 5 years and covered 50k both replaced with genuine kits from the respective manufacturer and fitted by my local MOT garage and the ford was £417 more expensive
He explains that in the vid. It’s like the Ranger vs the Amarok: no direct comparison when it comes to spec’ing each up but the VW wasn’t madly more expensive than the Ford in that instance, it just had more spec. So it’s likely this will be the same.
Can't see how they can really, plus if the "new" engine is suddenly cured, they would be shouting that fact from the rooftops, not being tight-lipped, I would also expect some changes to vw's all component warranty, when it comes to the wet belt...
The rules on 3.5T driving licence are likely to change. EU 4th Directive on driving licences will mean drivers can drive heavier vehicles without having an additional test. This is to accommodate the heavier EV vehicles and not create a deterrent to getting them. The UK is very likely to adopt the EU 4th Directive, as it makes logical sense.
@@shaungilmartin1505 Whether a vehicle in the UK requires a tachograph is a different issue. You can drive even very large vehicles even over 7.5T without a tachograph if it is not for hire or reward. The driving licence is what the EU 4th directive may change, otherwise it creates a licence obstacle for moving vehicles over to electric due to the excess weight of batteries. And consequential loss of payload.
Great vid…. Loved the tone of part one of this story.. in this video your tone seems more excusing vw trying to convince us that it’s okay to stay with vw…. I think the van looks nice and every business has to diversify to survive… it’s working for Toyota/citroen/peugot…. Thanks for the details… quite helpful-ish
In my mind, if they're not able to be open about the "new" engine then it's a bodge to the wet belt engine. If it was a new dry belt design Ford would be making a big thing of it.
Got a 6.1 combi 204 bhp and boy does it motor on long European trips - it is so good. Cant see why VW did not elvolve again with a proper t7 as others say they make enough on them. I'm getting the new transit combi next week, but Doubt ill sell the 6.1. certainly the Amarok has done well out of the new Ranger so good luck to VW.
@@THQAutomotive So if Ford have done the heavy lifting of developing this van.. VW should really be selling for less than the transit? will be very very interesting to see prices which ironically they are not saying yet? think this will be the make or break of this shared venture as we aren't stupid consumers and aware they are in basic the same vehicle
I've owened my T4 for the last 18 years and its been a great van. I also bought a then new Transit back in 2019 and thats also a great van. At the time of buying the transit a similar spec transporter would have cost an extra £10,000, definitely not worth the price. I've no idea how the prices will compare between the new transit and the transporter but realistically they will both be decent vans. If you able to put aside your VW snobbery (I know its a real thing, been there done that) you could save yourself a few quid by just getting a transit instead . A lot of the new features pointerd out in this video have come straight from the transit.
@@THQAutomotive All honesty only had my T6 a few weeks (love it though) and I normally buy vehicles second hand which are 4+ years old. So chances are if I need a van after the T6, a last gen T6.1 would be on the cards. EV isn't on my radar either, the infrastructure isn't there nor the battery technology. Maybe in 20+ years but not at present. As for the wet belts, oil and 'some' rubbers don't mix, they swell. Hence the 'tool' ford produced to check belt width after they started seeing failures. You then have the fact any wear from the belt just goes back into the sump. Yeah you have a oil filter but the strainer will get clogged before it even hits the filter. Give me a dry belt or wet chain anyday.
Im trying to figure out the styling, it seems to have a soft Japanese robot style front look to it. I love the more aggresive 6.1 look, so cant wait to see what you guys do with it
We had plans to buy Ford Custom but understand that VW has processed the bodies. Assume that means the chassie will start rusting when the warranty is out. These cars have become so expensive that we need to have them more than 5 years. VW is famous for rusting, unfortunately. They rust on the inside of the bumpers (rear) as well as outside at the panels. Since VW has had these problems for so many years, they must be happy with it. Earning a lot of money when things fall apart. Just a little plastic-clips from VW cost 10 bucks.
@@HavB2 Volkswagen has only supplied the chassis, the body and everything else is Ford. And the new Transporter will be built in Turkey at the Ford Otosan factory, just like the Ford Custom
Really! Each to their own. Having seen both in person, I much prefer the VW. Plus the interior look and feel and the infotainment system is much nicer. The VW running software, steering and suspension will no doubt to better too.
Fundamentally the engine diesel engine won’t be different. The only improvements i envisage are the to the cambelt itself or the dpf. There has been an improvement to the current belt already and a lot of models from 2018 were recalled. Ford also changed the service schedule from 10yr / 120k to 6yr /100k. It will be interesting to ask what the VW recommend as the service schedule. This should be a tell tale sign if things have changed. Other questions should be - does the T7 have an oil life indicator? It’s recommended that you should have an oil change when it reaches 20% . The oil life gauge is a smart device that accounts length / frequency of journey.
Thanks for your comment. Wish I'd had known this before, I'd love to have grilled them on that. That's very interesting information. We'll try and follow up on this.
I quite like the look of this actually...& with the additional payload it's gotta be a winner. I wonder what the price did will be between the VW & the Ford
I have a 22 plate T6.1 DSG highline Kombi converted. I won’t be getting another vehicle for a while... When I do, I don't think it will be one of these as the side panels are very transit looking and i don't like how the mid-line kicks up at the back, yak! All subjective though... Maybe I'll get a SWB Sprinter with a basic conversion? Cheers for the Video chaps!
Thanks for the video, guys. Very informative. I've been a volkswagen technician for 21 years now and a loyal vw Transporter van owner for the last 12 years, currently driving a 6.1. I get why volkswagen has had to do this now, and sooner or later, if you want to change your current transporter for a new one, what other choice are you really going to have. The part that annoys me is why volkswagen has allowed it to come to this. They've allowed there market share of the commercial vans to gradually decline while also not preparing for for a situation like this where possible they could of moved factory to a different location to reduced cost as ford have done. There are also thousands of workers now losing their jobs in the factory in Germany because of this. I accept this is the future, for now, and im sure I'll come around to buying a t7, but it is without doubt the end of an era for the vw community.
Don’t forget the whole other part of the collaboration which is that VW want to massively increase their presence in US commercial vehicle sector where Ford currently own the market with the F series
Great video !!!! I'm not really too concerned about the Ford , Vw collaboration as i can't afford a brand new van . I only had enough money for a 20 year old Transporter . However i do think the T5.1 front end looks better than the original T5 one 🤭😉😅
So what if Einhorn is Finkle. They are gonna look so good when these guys works their magic. It will soon be forgotten that it’s a collaboration with Ford
The new transit is lovely, I prefer my T6.1 though having driven the Ford. I won’t be buying another VW now. I’ll probably head to Mercedes in a few years. I’ve got some transits at work and a couple have had new engines under warranty when the wet belt failed so let’s see. Main issue for me is it isn’t a VW, I won’t lose sleep and I’m sure VW won’t when I don’t buy one 🤣
@@THQAutomotive the beauty of the T4 the T5 T5.1 T6 and T6.1 is it’s always been unmistakably a VW van correct? Now the new van is also a Ford with all the well known eco boom and injector faults but it looks like a Citroen, a Toyota etc etc. You may like it but come on where’s the individuality with it? 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
@@THQAutomotivedefinitely not a VW Transit I guess. Sorry but if I want to buy a Ford, I would buy it at the Ford dealership. Why buying a slightly changed Ford at the VW dealer for a VW price. I think Ford , Mercedes or Stellantis offer good alternatives for a wannabe VW van! 😢
I understand the cost reasoning but i dont get it. The T5 through T6.1 has been a constant evolution rather than a re-engineering, so a lot if the cost must jave been absorbed over years and years. Also, looking at sales figures doesnt add up either, driving through germany, almost every van was a transporter and i reckon thats a larger total market than the UK. If they had used VW running gear i suspect there wouldnt be an uproar about it. What i also find odd is that surely they sell more transporters than amaroks, yet they managed to make a larger differentiation between that and the ranger
I suspect the August figures would be lower on Transporters due to them being discounted. Amarok will be higher as they are new ish to market and had a lot of pre orders. You do see a lot of Transporters around Germany yes. The custom far out sells all the others though. The fact is the production costs / cost of living / wages are so high in Germany. If the panel van was made there, the price of the Transporter would need to be way more than any of us would want to spend.
Really interesting video, thank you 👍🏼 I embrace change and never had a problem with what VW did with the styling changes on the Transporter but WTF are VW doing with that grill? It looks like an old Peugeot or Vauxhall Nova 🤢 it looks cheap. The Caravelle looks a bit better. I think if you guys can bring out a new front grill that stops it looking like a burns victim would be a a huge improvement! As for the wet belt thing it clearly still uses one 🫣 all be it modified. If it didn’t they would be shouting from the rooftops about it!
We can make them look sexy, don't you worry 😉 A wet belt isn't an issue if they know why they break and how to stop it. VW seem confident in their testing 🤞
@@THQAutomotive Yes I know about the crafter but still think If the T7 was that bit wider It would become more popular. I have a T5 and at my age It will see me out.
Thanks so much for this guys, lots of really useful info. I don’t really mind about the looks - especially because there are far too many clever folks like yourselves who will get to work on it in no time and it will look 👌🏽 👌🏽 👌🏽 It really is the fact they’ve gone with Ford innards that has made me feel so sad about it tbh: the Wet Belt issue is terrifying but even the thought of a Ford gearbox over the VW DSG… 😢 Can you shed any light on the chat about this actually just being a stopgap and VW will go back to a solo operation for the next “T8”? (Maybe that’s why they made that fuss about calling this the “New Transporter” 🤷🏻♀️) One thing I’m confused about now though, if the Multivan that’s already available is in fact the new Caravelle for our market - is it a Ford deep down too? If so why did it come out when it did & not with these, and if not, well, same Q really! lol.
Unless the price was to increase, I can't see how VW could ever produce a Transporter themselves in Germany. I expect this partnership to continue. Maybe VW will have more influence on the next version? Yes I was disappointed about the Ford auto over the VW DSG. We'll see though. It's VW software not Ford on the engine and gearbox we believe. Hopefully that make it as good as the DSG 🤞
@@LizzyFerretOfficial The T7 Multivan is a thoroughbred VW built on their MQB platform. THQ predicted that the Multivan may appear in commercial van form at some point…it’d certainly be interesting if that were the case, I wonder if VW fanboys (myself included 😆) would sacrifice size for a true Volkswagen? 🤔
@@jogshuttle2676ohhh good info 👌🏽 I need an underfloor cassette lift and room to get from off my wheelchair and onto the drivers seat so if it’s massively smaller than the T5.1 that makes my life so much better than I’d struggle. However. It’s still not a Ford. So. There’s that 🙈
The C-Pillar is very “Ford”, but otherwise it does look like next generation Transporter to me. I’m really looking forward to seeing what these will look like with the usual modifications (wheels, suspension, etc). Watching with interest cause when my T6 needs replacing, it has to be another Kombi. After having a “van” I just can’t go back to a car. My T6 Kombi literally does everything I ask of it.
A lot of changes for sure. I guess we've had more time to process it than others. I'm at peace with it now. I see VW had no option. They've done the best they can and picked the right partner in my opinion.
Not everyone want the diesel. I'd buy the BEV if it was released at the same time. I'm fine with buying the diesel though. VW seem very confident in the testing of it. I promise this won't be R.I.P VW.
Personally had WAY more trouble with VW than Transit Customs - the engines on VW's have plenty of known issues :/ I'd actully but the PHEV for a variety of reasons.
The ford plant in turkey is a partnership between ford and a turkish campany otosan so it might be that in fact otosan and vw have entered the same arrangement and both vehicles are otosan with two different brand names on them
Thanks for the video guys. Just need to see this with my 20's on & some styling :). My T6 has got a brand new engine block in it, so it will be a while until I need to look at new vans. Also electric batteries, many questions over these. In 5 years don'y most car elec batts need replacing, which can often be as expensive as the vehicle was new ? Electric isn't sustainable, far from it at the moment. Also a shame to see no van manufacturers taking van theft or breaks in seriously with no improvement to easily drilled doors where central locking cables are so easily accessed by thieves in 30 seconds. These vans will indeed sell, but I do believe myself like others will forever cherish the old V Dubs.... and keep holding on.....
EV's seems to be the focus of this show across all brands. I'm not afraid of them. I loved my ID-Buzz and have a Taycan now. I also have a Buzz GTX on order. I looked into battery life. There are 350000 mile Tesla taxi's out there that have lost 3 miles in range. Time will tell I guess.
Thing is with the name that VW is saying it's called The New Transporter and it won't be called a T7, it needs to be the T7, because in a couple of years time it's not going to be a New Transporter.
I actually quite like the front end think it would lend well to a swamper build, but we all have choices and tastes better that way, bland world if we didn’t.

As an engineer in R&D, it’s interesting reading people’s comments who don’t really understand how the automotive industry works.
@@natmann7384 if a transporter is on its 5th engine either it’s done a million miles or most likely the owner can’t drive.
Whole reason I bought our t6 was to avoid the wet belt issues, now they've gone and plonked one in the new transporter 😂 RIP VW
That T6 won't last forever, what do you do next? Maybe the PHEV of BEV could work for you?
@@THQAutomotive Keep your existing van until solid state battery Transporters becomes a thing.
@THQAutomotive we'll buy a vito or whatever the best alternative is.
Even if we were considering the new transporter, there's no point in buying the VW if the Ford is exactly the same but cheaper.
@@richardpickering2452I'd buy the BEV now but the diesel comes out first. I loved my ID-Buzz. I love my Taycan. EV's really suit my driving distances.
Sooo much information to digest. Absolutely cracking job lads.
Ps. My hats go off to you for filming that in a packed place. 🎉
The filming was easy, hats off to Massimo for editing it all in 2 days. He spent the whole day in the hotel room today editing (which is like a prison cell) while we went back to the show. We then returned with more footage to add. He still managed to get it all done ready to upload tonight.

@@THQAutomotive ye that’s top stuff. I guess you wanted the info out there first. Whatever people say now….. people will buy this for sure.
The Caddy is VW built.
I was talking to an AA mechanic recently, they've already received training on the new engines and I quote, the new collaboration has the welt belt. 👍
Yes we know it has a wet belt. A wet belt is used in multiple engines. Ford just had a problem with how they have used it. VW seem confident with their testing and whatever changes Ford needed to do, to stop their issues.
Major reason not to buy...
any new security features to help tradesman keep their tools safe ? Or can it be opened like a can of beans again....
A question we didn't ask I'm afraid, I am glad the VW has different locks to the Ford though.
Great question. Theft from vans will never cease, so you would hope this was part of the design brief. That said I was on the M25 car park tonight and I saw a brand new transit with a big tear in the sliding door next to the lock, clearly a break in, so fear not.
Very cheap thin metal so will be easier than before
I've repaired my neighbours mobile locksmith who uses a ford transit custom and it was literally opened up like a can of beans with a grinder ir maybe a can opener ... so thin its quite hard to weld the panels back together ( ended up reinforcing it with cement board as grinders can cut one or the other but not both.... like a safe)
I don’t think any van could be secure from the moment 18V grinders became available
Thanks guys for the excellent video, for all us who are looking at this new t7/transporter it nice to see an in depth video by people we know and trust to give an accurate, as it is review. Think you covered all we need to know. Just that wet belt to find more about.
We'll keep digging, you have my word. I'm personally confident though, let's hope I'm not wrong 🤞
The faces on both of them at 23:03 after that question says it all. If you’ve got a T6.1 it’ll be money in the bank. If I wanted a Ford I’d buy a ford
@@furryfruitcake 😂😂
I’ve got a 72 ford transit with a wet belt, it’s done 100k miles with no problems, apparently the belt edges where when new and bits block the oil pick up, but the first couple of services sort this out by oil and filter changes.
That's interesting to hear. People just hate because they've read about it on Facebook 🥱 VW seem very confident with their testing on this engine.
I heard something about the belt deteriorating in the dirty oil, also the lack of oil changes causing dpf issues causing oil dilution and deteriorating the belt.
Servicing is the issue.
@@johnantonine4505 hi, I think if these engines are regular serviced there’s no problem. My transit says oil change every 18k but I do it every 9k
I still remember when everyone hated anything but air cooled. I had a t4 diesel at the time it was very much hated 😂
We get this every time 😂
The likely improvement to the current engine, is to make replacing the belt cheaper and easier. Then set maybe a 40k mile replacement schedule for the belt. When the service schedules are published we should be able to see this.
Operators of large van contracts and the lease companies will want the whole life service costs before they set their figures.
Why would you put the charging point on the front bumper? How long will it take before water starts getting through the flap??
@@natkingcol909 wouldn't matter, same as all electric cars. They aren't active until plugged in.
@@THQAutomotive Yeah but surely it'll just corrode the socket quicker... And no doubt someone will not close the flap properly and drive off and it'll break... Car designers grind my gears... Remember when ford decided to use a key opener thing to open the bonnet? They all broke eventually... Kak idea...
VW have killed one of the best commercial vehicles ever produced.
Actually quite impressed.....that doka stole the show for me! That has serious potential 🤙
I'm super tempted by a doka for sure.

Would be good to see how this goes
So glad got one of the last t6.1 transporters on a 74 plate
Yeah, love the roof bars, bulk head hatch and electric folding tow bar.
That could take some time. VW seems confident they'd done a lot of testing on the engine. It won't stop me buying one / some.

I would buy it just for that retractable towbar! What a great feature. 😎
Yeah love that.

Thank you for your comments. We worked really hard to get this video filmed, edited and live. I really appreciate your comment 😊
All these vw conversion companies trying to put a positive spin on this won’t cut it

@THQAutomotive true. I think it's just the fact it's a ford in disguise. I agree, the original shape needed a change, but this was a very sharp change. Would be interesting to see a cost comparison to the ford as it’s basically the same van for many it would be the decider .
Are they charging more for the vw than the ford?
He explains that in the vid. It’s like the Ranger vs the Amarok: no direct comparison when it comes to spec’ing each up but the VW wasn’t madly more expensive than the Ford in that instance, it just had more spec. So it’s likely this will be the same.
Yes as Lizzy says, we do cover this in the video.
Can't see how they can really, plus if the "new" engine is suddenly cured, they would be shouting that fact from the rooftops, not being tight-lipped, I would also expect some changes to vw's all component warranty, when it comes to the wet belt...
says about panel gaps and you can see the door hinge
Loads of information thanks. I'm waiting to hear more about the PHEV, on paper it looks to offer more than any T6.

I'd not noticed but I can see it now you say.
EU over 2.5t = tacho for commercial use.....not every van is a camper
@@shaungilmartin1505 Whether a vehicle in the UK requires a tachograph is a different issue. You can drive even very large vehicles even over 7.5T without a tachograph if it is not for hire or reward.
The driving licence is what the EU 4th directive may change, otherwise it creates a licence obstacle for moving vehicles over to electric due to the excess weight of batteries. And consequential loss of payload.

That's a very good question. I would think not but current EV's have chargers on different side.
Hopefully VW do something with the multivan and do a kombi version.
One reason I didn't go for a transist was due to the wet belt....... Yeah i'm sticking with my T6. Good video however :)

I`ve got the Ford custom 2024 and i love it
We had plans to buy Ford Custom but understand that VW has processed the bodies.

I think they will be similar, the specs will vary though.
What about the Crafter? We have 2 and love them. They're still totally VW.
i have had mechanics tell me not to get the new ford due to the wet belt what do i do now
Who was the mechanic though. Was he high up on Ford development?
"Wet belt" is a design disaster, everyone knows by now. Yet they use it. Recipe for a lot of trouble for VW customers. Again...
Very interesting view from someone that works for VW. Thank you for your comments.
Top tip: clean the camera lens before filming. There’s a horrible hazy film on the lens which shows when filming. 👍🏻
It's only in some clips, it's a filter for the Osmo pocket pro. We discovered when editing, it looks better without the filter.
Don’t forget the whole other part of the collaboration which is that VW want to massively increase their presence in US commercial vehicle sector where Ford currently own the market with the F series
@@seccles09 we asked VW if this platform would be going to the US and they said no.
The more I look at the t7 the more I love my t5.
I love a T5 don't get me wrong. The T7 is a grower though for sure. The more time I spent around them, the more I'm looking forward to owning one.
Me too; and mine is a 4 motion with the bigger engine!
Great video !!!! I'm not really too concerned about the Ford , Vw collaboration as i can't afford a brand new van . I only had enough money for a 20 year old Transporter .
However i do think the T5.1 front end looks better than the original T5 one 🤭😉😅
Wash your mouth out!! T5 pre-facelift all the way! 😮😝🤣
@@THQAutomotive 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Is there going to be kombi version?
Yes we show this in the video. The dark grey one.
@@THQAutomotive so still has a bulkhead behind rear seats transit style? ….. that’s a shame.
So what if Einhorn is Finkle. They are gonna look so good when these guys works their magic. It will soon be forgotten that it’s a collaboration with Ford
Thank you, we'll do our best 😊
Not sure on the exterior design. Maybe it's a grower. Nice video as always tho guys
@@MrShufunk honestly, I think it's a grower. The more I look at it, the more I like it.
Great review guys dont like the look of it need to see it in the flesh
I think you'll be pleasantly surprised :)
Of course they’ve grown on you ….. you’re a businessman who’s going to be selling upgraded parts for the new Transforder 😉👍🏼
Yes of course, but I mean what I've said in this video, believe me or not 🤷🏻♂️
@@THQAutomotive yeah of course you do. Just read the room 😉👌🏽
@@stevebennett6727 I don't understand?
@@THQAutomotive the beauty of the T4 the T5 T5.1 T6 and T6.1 is it’s always been unmistakably a VW van correct? Now the new van is also a Ford with all the well known eco boom and injector faults but it looks like a Citroen, a Toyota etc etc. You may like it but come on where’s the individuality with it? 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
I'm so pleased I pick up my new t6.1 next week
I love our T6.1's. Out of interest, when it is time to change, what would you buy next?
Youl change your mind, always having electrical faults, diesal mixing with the oil. Months to get parts or an appointment at the dealership
@@THQAutomotive the one I have is 30 months old
Just wanted a new one before it went ford
Really interesting video, thank you 👍🏼
I embrace change and never had a problem with what VW did with the styling changes on the Transporter but WTF are VW doing with that grill? It looks like an old Peugeot or Vauxhall Nova 🤢 it looks cheap. The Caravelle looks a bit better.
I think if you guys can bring out a new front grill that stops it looking like a burns victim would be a a huge improvement!
As for the wet belt thing it clearly still uses one 🫣 all be it modified. If it didn’t they would be shouting from the rooftops about it!
We can make them look sexy, don't you worry 😉 A wet belt isn't an issue if they know why they break and how to stop it. VW seem confident in their testing 🤞
The T7 looks very nice but they need to make them a bit wider to accommodate the possibility of sleeping across the van.
For wider you need a Crafter. The Transporter is their smaller platform
@@THQAutomotive Yes I know about the crafter but still think If the T7 was that bit wider It would become more popular. I have a T5 and at my age It will see me out.
Thanks so much for this guys, lots of really useful info.
I don’t really mind about the looks - especially because there are far too many clever folks like yourselves who will get to work on it in no time and it will look 👌🏽 👌🏽 👌🏽
It really is the fact they’ve gone with Ford innards that has made me feel so sad about it tbh: the Wet Belt issue is terrifying but even the thought of a Ford gearbox over the VW DSG… 😢
Can you shed any light on the chat about this actually just being a stopgap and VW will go back to a solo operation for the next “T8”? (Maybe that’s why they made that fuss about calling this the “New Transporter” 🤷🏻♀️)
One thing I’m confused about now though, if the Multivan that’s already available is in fact the new Caravelle for our market - is it a Ford deep down too?
How does anyone live without a van in their lives? I'd be totally lost 😂
That’s a lot of change to digest easily
A lot of changes for sure. I guess we've had more time to process it than others. I'm at peace with it now. I see VW had no option. They've done the best they can and picked the right partner in my opinion.
R.I.P New Transporter ,we all bought transporters for their quality
That engine has just killed it for a lot of people
Not everyone want the diesel. I'd buy the BEV if it was released at the same time. I'm fine with buying the diesel though. VW seem very confident in the testing of it. I promise this won't be R.I.P VW.
It’s a wet belt, oil and rubber don’t go 8k is what Ford charge for a new engine
Personally had WAY more trouble with VW than Transit Customs - the engines on VW's have plenty of known issues :/ I'd actully but the PHEV for a variety of reasons.
@@natmann7384 that's interesting. I'm interested in the PHEV myself
Nothing wrong with the wet belt if serviced properly.
The ford plant in turkey is a partnership between ford and a turkish campany otosan so it might be that in fact otosan and vw have entered the same arrangement and both vehicles are otosan with two different brand names on them
VW told us the build washing machines there too! 🤷♂
😂
Same with caddy / transit connect.
I agree 🤷🏻♂️
I agree! They would have to call the one after the new new Transporter 😅
@@BobHawke-z7v still not sure what to call it 🤣
I actually quite like the front end think it would lend well to a swamper build, but we all have choices and tastes better that way, bland world if we didn’t.
Couldn't agree more. That's the beauty of those things. We can make them so personally.
Back lights are a Ford F 150 pickup
The Ford or VW?
