Although there were multiple projects that went into improving my home's curb appeal, this curb appeal transformation video will focus on 4 concrete projects:
1. Concrete Resurfacing of my front steps using NewCrete
2. Replacing my front walkway with a new curved concrete entryway
3. Constructing a concrete garden curb as a durable landscape edging
4. Repairing the broken sidewalk at the front of my driveway
All in all, tackling these 4 concrete projects dramatically improved the curb appeal of my home.

I almost always use Rapidset's 24/6 Concrete Mix for my concrete projects since it is easy to work with and cures within 24 hours. Also, as mentioned in the video, there are tons of different ways to mix concrete. However, I think the Mudmixer is by far the best and fastest way to mix concrete.

Good job. In the future, it will help if you show the curb appeal from the actual curb. Give the viewers numerous full house shots from the street. Also, run the reveal time twice as long as you think you should - that’s the payoff your viewers are waiting for, allow them to fully enjoy it. If you watch other project reveals, you’ll notice that when the reveal is brief, as it too often is, you’re left unsatisfied.
100% agree. The reveal seems rushed.
Probably trying to avoid getting doxxed if he actually lives there. But maybe that's already compromised idk 🤷♂️

I think it is because younger people nowadays prefer short-attention-span theater and don't have the patience for longer form content. I for one appreciated the video but as others have mentioned, would have enjoyed it if it were a bit longer. I will check out the other vids mentioned.

Foreword: I did my best to ensure the following comment was written thoroughly enough to be legible without the parenthetical additions. I am not sure how well I succeeded.
Young kids today have the exact same attention spans they did when I was a child in the early 90s. I just don't slap my son when he's loud in the car. I used to get beat for opening my mouth and instead we just talk and chat and include my son in things for the long drives instead of expecting him to be a silent trophy on the shelf. In my opinion, parents today (not all of them, but an increasing amount of them) are the only parents who have kids that they want to be around.
This is a far cry from the trophies that the grandparents bullied my parents generation into having. Or the little indentured servants that grow being indoctrinated into a life of back breaking labor for no pay on the farm that's been in the family for generations.
And of course rural kids are gonna be better behaved, they're too exhausted to get into most trouble. I used to disappear into the woods for literally days on end and my parents wouldn't even come looking for me. I had a lot of destructive energy with mostly non harmful outlets.
I used to just get pissed grab an axe and chop down a random tree in the middle of nowhere. What's an inner city kid with no parents at home supposed to do with his negative emotions when the parents don't have time to parent because we are currently in the stage of capitalism where there just isn't enough money coming down the pipes?
Parents work harder than ever before (before you argue this, educate yourself. I have extreme ADHD so it is difficult for me to keep lists of cited information. Every time I try to find these references I have to re teach myself to use Google journals) for less money (adjusted for inflation. Again, if you disagree, educate yourself. I would love to be factually proven wrong and find out that I'm just lazy. The alternative point that my parents and grandparents generation give so little fucks that they truly don't care that they've damn near destroyed the planet is too damn bleak for me and I desperately want to be shown how it's my fault so I can fix it instead of it being generations of spoiled entitled wealthy individuals actively abusing and exploiting the less fortunate) than ever before. The older generations have crippled us and they won't take responsibility for it because outside of social issues (which they refuse to acknowledge are far better than they have ever been before) everything is exponentially more difficult and/or expensive and it's completely their fault. So of course I train my 9 year old (his birthday was yesterday) to think speak and act like an adult. He won't have a chance to turn this train around if I don't hurl knowledge and answers and technology down his throat. How can he succeed without these when process automation is destroying unskilled labor (I hate this term. All labor is skilled if there's a need for it and you fulfill said need. Again if you wanna argue, come down to Houston and wait tables at an IHOP in the morning on a weekend)
So of course he is watching nature documentaries on his tablet or reading books or even just watching a cartoon. Who gives a shit. My mom would come home at some point after school drop on the couch and sit there until she fell asleep. I'm not perfect but I'm involved and actually want him to succeed. Why can't the older generations help instead of telling us how easy it is?
I think the answer is because they don't care. I think they sorted themselves and their families and the rest of the world can burn for all they care.

You can just coat your expensive lumber in kerosene so it comes off easy from the concrete. We used it & got a wood grain look on the concrete.
My only change on the flowerbeds as a gardener is put a small drain somewhere in case of heavy rain, your down spout is in there and that bed will be mush in heavy rain. Even one small pipe below that curb will help to funnel the water to the grass. Just a little green thumb advice from someone who did something similar.
I agree with your point about drainage, however, the gravel base under the concrete is pretty much a French drain and is way more effective than any single drain would be. Maybe I'm wrong, though. What do you think?
@@theamaturepro I agree with ladyjinyxx. I had a similar problem and I had to install a drain tile pipe to carry water to the curb to keep water away from the house. Gravel with no drain may absorb a light rain, but a heavy rain plus a downspout will probably flood it out quickly.

I actually kind of enjoy the fact that the stairs are a different shade than the rest of the concrete. Makes it feel like a transition from the sidewalk/walkway to the house

You’re brain dead that whole project didn’t take 11 min nor would it take an hour or less. It’s time lapsed over atleast 5 hrs and broken down
I have to say, personally, I like the slightly darker steps it helps to break up the sterile continuity of all the concrete you layed, plus with the new railings and the wood posts it helps break things up into zones and adds subtle color splashes.

Something we debated (and never did) was decking over our somewhat ugly stoop. I think that's a nice option, too, if you use the right materials so it doesn't rot being adjacent to concrete.

The same or similar effect can be done with larger bricks and pavers. I prefer that approach because if for any reason you have to dig, the bricks and pavers can be removed easily. They also add variety and color depending on the stones and pavers you select. In a sense, they are temporary and permanent at the same time.
Yes, I almost never see people use concrete for these things, especially reinforced concrete as it is a pain to remove.
But it seems really common in North America?
I would avoid concrete unless needed strength in walls and such.
A reinforced, dyed and stamped concrete patio/wall is the solution to having a beautiful patio for many many years !!

No permit required for onsite flat work👍🏻. The gable porch on the other hand…….😂
Just a quick landscaping tip. You never want to plant arborvitae that close to the foundation of your house. They are trees that grow about 15-20 feet at maturity. Not only will the roots damage your foundation, they also like to strangle sewage pipes. I found that out after thousands of dollars of damage. If you want to see out those windows, you will have doomed yourself to trimming them every year for the lifetime of the plant. There are types that don't grow as big like the two globe variety I saw there. But most of those plants are just the immature big variety.
Plus something more full like rhododendrons or daphne which are evergreens would look way better

BEAUTIFUL!!! Oh how I wish my body would allow be to fix up my yard and do the long overdue repairs to my home. As a little girl, I loved helping my Dad with all the work he did to care for animals, build pens, add an addition to our house, yard work, growing fruits and vegetables, etc. My brothers didn't like any of it, but I loved working with my hands and seeing the results of hard work. Old age, injuries, and health conditions will not allow me to do any of those things anymore, so watching you and you making your visions come to life puts a huge smile on my face and fills my heart with joy. Keep following your dreams! You are one of the rare ones that doesn't have a job, because you absolutely love what you are doing. You have the eye and vision to take nothing or something bad and make it absolutely beautiful, now that is the gift I wish I had. I just found your channel and will probably binge watch to get caught up. Thank you for brightening up this old lady's day and heart!

All of the time and money 20+ year's ago are now wasted, because as an injured widow, I can't take care of it either.
Hiring help is a joke. One company cut down two 30 year old Azaleas and left the Bradford Pear scrubs I hired them to remove.
Another company completely mowed over my Lily bed and my bed of Heather. And, cut my Red Top Border to shreds.
Mother nature can reclaim it, I can't win the battle or the war. 😢
ive arthrtis and I'm 64 i just get tools that will help me. one of the is my 16 yr old grand daughter lol. I can't bend with my knees so i have a box thing on wheels you can get at homebase or elsewhere and i put two cushions on it. the trick is not sitting to long....then i can get to the weeds. i have a light weight mower. I just do a bit sit down and repeat.

I have done enough face plants while standing & trying to pull stubborn weeds. I'm 70+ & can't get up when I fall if I don't have something I can pull my self up. After about 20 minutes, some men came to help me up, but one poor man lost his lunch. He couldn't handle the sight of blood and lots of the dead weeds were sticking out of my face. First time I ever received scars from pulling weeds. LOL! It's nice that you have your granddaughter to help you, all of mine are in different parts of the country. Thank you again for the info. Watching this, and then reading all the suggestions in the comments, just brings home that some things I can DIY, and others should be handled by experts who know the ins and outs. This transformation may not be “perfect,” but it’s still phenomenal! My jaw almost hit the floor!

The transformation of your front yard is amazing. I have no plans to do any concrete work anytime soon, but seeing you do it yourself without the need for a cement truck would make me more willing to take on a project like that in the future. Keep up the good work!

One note that a home inspector might ding you on - you want a negative grade away from the house so rain water flows off the roof and away. Without drainage holes the garden wall may create problem. Something to check out in case you hadnt
@@AndrewThronImprovementsa truck of cement is less than 2k in San Diego and you and a few buddies can man the tube and have this whole thing done in a few hours. Having said that, you did a good job dude.
I imagine there are some jobs where a truck can’t access the area, so this is a good demo for that.

Heres a tip, put the screws on youre forms on the outsied whenever you can so when the concrete fills in the forms you can take the screws back out sense they arent burried in concrete. It makes taking apart forms way easier and faster pluss you get to reuse the wood and screws instead of busting them out!

Just stumbled into this video, and found it very informative and entertaining. I live in Hungary, our climate is between - 20 and +40 Celsius, so concrete cracks. So we build 5-6 feet long sections, and I always separate these with 0.5 inch thin polystyrene sheets in the liquid concrete. This fills up the gaps, while remains very flexible. As a result tuere is zero crack in 10+ year old concrete in my yard.

I am curious how the cost breakdown is between the concrete mix &rentals vs calling in a company to pour?
I also happen to think plain gray concrete isn't really adding that much to the overall look, but that's purely subjective on my part. Technically and practically speaking, this was a great renovation.

Just a few tips and tricks: The brushed sidewalk was brushed when it was too wet, you can see the material bunch up and result in an uneven finish. Also, the driveway sidewalk should probably be poured a bit thicker to reduce the amount of cracking that forms again.
Don’t mix with a cordless drill
This is good advice! Also using a mag float to work up a slurry gives you a more uniform surface layer to broom out without your trowel digging.

My tip is to avoid mulch so close to the foundation and try rock pebble if you want something there. Rock pebble keeps away weeds and allows moisture run off from the drainage when rain happens and you don’t want to mulch that close to the house because plant life and moisture from the mulch will damage the foundation and even effect run off and pipes underground. If you don’t want rocks there either, try masonry paint or create textured brick look with bricks or cement and then seal with a few coats of that paint.

I've never had an issue with the apinning mixers. It looked like your mix was pretty dry. Just a bit more water would have made a HIGE difference

Top Work Brother! your origonal video doing the steps gave me some motivation for redoing my entire driveway with a different concrete (Ardex CD) and seeing all these ideas, even though I am a contractor, taking on projects at home require extra motivation but seeing how you broke them down, this is awesome.
You did a fantastic job! What matters is that you made it with your own hands. Most of the times all the small flaws bring nothing but uniqueness to the project.

It does fuck all for the homes value from an appraisal standpoint. Curb appeal, sure, but that doesn't always translate into value. Most home improvement projects don't pay for themselves.

What a transformation 😮 you did a great job! Not sure I would trust myself to do any of this lol but you make me believe I could 😂
The concrete needs to be sealed after initial cure to hold the moisture. Also, if you noticed the only concrete that was bad in front of your house was at the driveway.and that was because that is where the cars drive over. 6 inch concrete thickness is recommended at that location.
Would the cracking be due to drainage issues also? Mine is the same way. Thanks!
@brittany09 it's more about load transfer. When you car goes from road to driveway you're putting more pressure than when the weight is distributed evenly on the concrete.

Looks a lot better. We had to remove and redo our driveway (huge 4-car width driveway) and it was a big job. We also put a curb around our front lawn. It makes a big difference in how clean our front yard looks now.

This is phenomenal. I’m a mother of two little boys, and we homeschool. I truly hope that they grow-up to be able to do things like this themselves. They’ll become young men and decide where their professions will be - but we are hoping they might choose the trades. Well done - your mum must be very proud of you!

In Alberta, where I did concrete for a couple of seasons, we did a wavy broom finish. It’s nicer looking than just straight drag. Nice work!

@@AndrewThronImprovements Instead of dragging the broom straight you make wavy lines … just move the broom in S patterns. You can do them as tight or loose as you like.

Q: Why did you say you were sorry you added dye to the mix? Bc when you added new sidewalks, etc., they didn’t match the porch?
Yes, you can resurface concrete, but if you don't properly prep it ( pressure washing and using a bonding agent) as well as using a quality resurfacing product , it will flake ,chip and crack in a couple of months. Also , a trick of the trade is to wet the area before applying and don't do it in excessive heat and direct sun.

You should drill holes in the base of your stairs and put rebar horizontally, glueing in with epoxy. That's called a thermal bridge which transfers the heat and cold equally, otherwise you'll get unequal changes in temperature and cracks in concrete.
Dowling doesn't create a thermal bridge. It does however lock the two sides together until the dowel rots away. It also doesn't prevent cracks. Do more research before you tell others what to do. I've poured concrete 15 years in the northern climates, and ran a concrete batch plant. He did a good job for an amateur. Better than many "professionals". More practice is needed to do a nice finish. Let the concrete set a bit more before brooming, which is hard to do when you are pouring using bags.

By the way, who or why would anyone think this was in any way not perfect when you consider the former!? New old question: Where is the video of the construction of the front porch? I have seen the upgrade to the wooden posts but not how those posts appeared. Confused!

I really like how you showed that this stuff is not easy. We have done a lot of remodeling. We had to do stucco with a Florida home. You will run into so many difficult things, like covering the steps. It looks so easy and fun, it’s not! It is difficult. You keep it real, so people know what they are getting into. Great job. I wonder if he had to have permits for this. Florida permits you to death!
