    One of the BEST cars I ever owned was a 1985 Caprice Classic. 5.0 V8 and ZERO issues for 265,000 miles.... traded up to a 1990 Caprice Classic LS Brougham... and still no disappointments. Chevrolet hit a HOMERUN on this one

    2:14 - meanwhile in 1985, Mercedes-Benz was selling their 300E with a 2.96-Liter Straight -6, with 177 SAE Net H.P. Of course an E-Class back in 1985 would've cost you the equivalent of three or four Caprice cars.

      @@ThisMakesMeThink I think a lot more people took care of the Mercedes as well since they paid more for it and it's more of a "status" oriented car. The Mercedes might be somewhat more reliable but most certainly not cheaper in maintenence or parts.

    This brings back so many memories of my first car in 1996, an 80 Impala two tone tan over dark brown and my parents 89 Caprice which they had for over 25 years. These cars really stood the test of time, and were an absolute dream to drive. GM hasnt made anything that good since. I wish I had one of these today

    I concur. The Caprice Classics in the 80's were AWESOME American cars! The power, the roominess, the ride, the comfort...brings back some GREAT memories.

    Had an 81 impala with a 4.4 267ci V8 light blue excellent car would buy another one even today the best from gm at that time

    I kind of wished I still had my 86, it had all of those options. Rode like a cloud, and tuned properly, it took of like a rocket with a new L69 Monte Carlo SS engine in it.

    I owned an 85, and it lasted me 300,000 miles. It did have GM's typical rattles, fairly loose steering and the front bench seats were mediocre. But it was a reliable car and parts were relatively inexpensive.

    Jeezus, I’m in love with that Caprice. I didn’t expect to like it but I enjoy everything about it. The paint color, wheels, the velour interior, the wide & square dash. It can tow a camper. Damn! America doesn’t know how to make cars anymore.

    This was the last year they spoke of the full-size models collectively as "The Chevrolet" with Caprice and Impala, which were basically trim levels, treated as separate models. It was the last year for the Impala nameplate's original run, from '86 all B-body Chevys would be Caprices.

      You are correct. The Impala name was dropped in favor of the base model Caprice which was a absolute favorite car of police agency's and taxi company's. The Caprice Classic replaced the previous standard model Caprice and the Caprice Brougham was new for 1986 and was just as nice as the current model Olds 88's and Buick LeSabres for a much lower price.

      @@charleskosyjana1295 And they really overlapped for only one year, before the Oldsmobuicks migrated, wagons apart, to the much smaller FWD H-body. It makes me wonder what GM's "Plan A" for the Caprice and wagons were, had gas remained as high as it was in 1980-81 when mid-decade product plans were being roughed out. Would the A-body Celebrity be the biggest Chevy and the biggest wagon, or would there have been H-body Caprices and wagons?

      @@nlpnt GM almost had to keep the full size Chevy as that was a real bread and butter car for the fleet ( police and taxi ) market. If they would have changed the Caprice to the new FWD platform they would have lost all of those sales as the only other full size RWD GM car available after 1986 was the Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. I don't think police or taxi would have bought Cadillacs. GM could have also kept the Impala name and made that model on the FWD platform while continuing to make the RWD car under the Caprice name. I don't know why this wasn't done, it would have made sense and given people a greater choice.

      @@charleskosyjana1295 There was talk of migrating taxi fleets over to (what would become) minivans, which was dashed in the '80s when Chrysler was selling as many well-optioned ones as they could make to retail buyers paying full whack. Police could've been taken care of with a 2.0L max displacement limit; to make the patrol units last as long as the old RWDs I'd have set them for 100% second-gear starts and put angle-iron braces ahead of the front wheels to prevent curb-jumping.

    I have a 83 parisienne which is a chev impala in disguise an people that go cruising with me are amazed at how well it rides .. i gues there use to the disposable junk that all the car manufacturers make .. an every car show i go to people stop an look at it an ask me a 100 questions about it an thats ok with me cause i m proud to show it

    I miss my 89 box i had it 3 years sold it twice last time i saw it was in 2017 i spent lots of cash on it i still have dreams about it till this day its somewere like a few miles down the road in this guys back yard i heard they took the wheels and engine out i wanna go and buy it back

      It's a shame that GM did not retool its Arlington plant to continue building large rear-wheel drive cars. If they had done so, I could picture the eighth-generation Chevy Impala, tenth-gen Pontiac Bonneville, and eighth-gen Cadillac DeVille being built on GM's V platform, which had been utilized for the Holden Commodore and Opel Omega. Instead, GM decided to prioritize large pickups and SUVs while fuel was cheap and the economy was in good shape in the late '90s. Once gas prices rose between 9/11 and the 2008 recession, fewer people decided to resort to those vehicles, opting for Japanese cars instead. Ultimately, GM suffered major losses.

    Meanwhile EFI 5.0L and 4 speed auto was STANDARD in LTD Crown Victoria in 83 w/ tbi and 85 got MPFI. Caprice was a good work horse but gm was really behind Ford here. I mean, 15-18mpg real life with carb 305... 22-24 mpg real world in efi 302 plus better reliability.
    LS 4.8 swap a b body and pretty well perfect cruiser

    Love it though I cant understand why GM refused to put fuel injection on most of their V8’s back then. 165 hp on the 5.0 V8 wasn’t too shabby for that era but EFI would have been so much better and a dual exhaust.

      I drove many of those 5.0l 4 bbls in the 80s. Those cars sound awesome when ya flip the breather and hear that Rochester 4bbl open up. I'd never own an old car with fuel injection. The dual exhaust i agree on !!

      The first year for the fuel injected V8 caprice was 1989. I never did understand that either. They did the TBI injection on the 4.3 V6 in all the models starting in 85. El Caminos, Malibus

    That tow rating seems bogus. Later 91+ B-bodies maxxed out at 5,000 and the Fleetwood could only do 7,000 with the rare V4P tow pack, which included 3.73 gears in the L05 cars and 3.42 gears with the 94-96 LT1 cars....a 1985 B-body couldn't take 760 lbs of tongue weight on the hitch without dragging it's ass.

      They didn't say it would tow fast. Trucks today are so powerful they hold 80 mph on mountain grades with a full trailer. Climbing from Phoenix to Flagstaff in the late 1980's was interesting. Someone driving 70 and in the next lane a Caprice wagon with a camp trailer running flat out at 35 mph. Every few miles a big burned spot in the asphalt where some poor overworked smog system or transmission decided to flame up the whole car.

      @@dieselcoondog No I know but I'm not even comparing to trucks today. I'm comparing to basically the same platform of cars less than 10 years later. Maybe the rating system changed. The EPA fuel economy standards have changed like once every decade or so, sometimes more often, for example.

      The difference between body-on-frame rear drive and the more modern architecture. Modern turbo's do well but generates a lot of heat, so for passenger cars are designed for short bursts, since designers believe that anyone that wants to tow will be in a truck/suv chassis anyway. I prefer a car, which is I I'd rather look at 40 year old cars on RUclips than drive the modern machine sitting 40 feet away in my garage. Sigh..

    Amazing how much engine technology and efficiency has improved. The 1985 5.0 liter V8 has less power than my 2017 Malibu with a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder. But, my Malibu isn't going to tow 7000lbs. 😂

      Yup. My first car was an ‘86 Caprice. The 5.0 V8 had less horsepower than the 2.5 on my ‘18 Mazda6. But torque is a different ballgame.

      Once upon a time, you could actually tow with your car. Back in the 70's (and, earlier), higher-ups in traveling circus's (which were still a thing, back then) would buy Cadillacs, mount a heavy duty hitch on the back, and beef up the suspension a bit, and tow their massive Air Streams (there was actually a company that produced heavy-duty RV trailers, that could better withstand constant moving; I can't recall the name, and information on them is scarce, these days. They were marketed primarily to circus people, but other full time travellers bought them, too).
      I miss cars that were tough enough to tow.

      @Shovel84 $60k on a pickup is absurd. I like my trucks to come broken in, already. Several thousand miles on the meter, pre-dented (minor dents; not a complete crash, lol), rubber floors, vinyl seats, no unnecessary foo-foo accessories. I plan to work the hell out of any truck that I own, so I don't need anything that's going to break easily and annoy me. Just a plain, basic truck. I don't even know if such a thing has been made, recently.

    How'd they hook up a Go Pro to the underside of the Chassis when they showed the suspension? Those cars were awesome. Chevy needs to bring back the boxy Caprice with the same size dimensions with a more fuel efficient engine. Angular and boxy designs are coming back in style.

    My dad had a Caprice Classic wagon in the late 80’s that he called “the Beauty Wagon.” It had the fake woodgrain and everything. He was obviously being facetious, but I loved the rear facing back seat and riding in that thing.

    My dad had a 1985 Caprice Classic that he purchased new that was dark blue in color, and had a V-8 engine. Overall, a great riding car, but 2 issues stand out that I can remember. First, the power steering failed within 2 years of driving. Secondly, the blue paint eventually faded badly all over the body of the car. Makes you wonder what types of quality control are really in place when manufacturing a car.

      That 5.0 V8 will pull a trailer. You'd want the lower geared transmission. And, you'd have to get the stiffer suspension package. Once upon a time, towing with a car was normal. Before trucks became fashionable, family camping trips were taken in sedans, and people wanted to pull campers behind them.

      @@superjojo555 yes, they had started regulating cars by then. A lot of muscle cars died due to all the regulations, which ushered in the Asian subcompact cars.

      By the 1960s the pollution in California - mainly LA - was so bad they devised their own government board.This was kind of the first step in California becoming the control freaks they have a reputation for today. The California Air Resource Board (CARB) was created in 1967, 6 years before the EPA, and established different and more stringent emission controls for cars than the other 49 states all the way back then. They were the first state to require emission testing and inspections on cars to get your tags renewed, and cars built after a certain date in the 1970s could no longer be registered in the state of California without a CARB certified emissions modification added to it. It also limited the aftermarket tuner world, as things like cold air intakes, larger exhaust, cams, superchargers and turbo chargers needed to be CARB certified to install on a car. So until computer controls got better at limiting emissions, most cars were built with completely different engine, transmission, and exhaust/gas recirculation controls for cars shipped to and ordered in California than anywhere else in America. You would see "California Emissions" on the window sticker for California cars, and "49 State Emissions" on that very same car, shipped to anywhere else in the country. By the time computers, advanced fuel injection, and other engine control designs came into engine management they were able to make every car compliant with California and everywhere else, so modern cars can be purchased anywhere and registered in California without a problem.

    4:22.............um, no., that isn't a "smart, newly-designed steering wheel", at least on the Caprice Classic, that's the same delta-spoke wheel used from 1978-'84. It just has a chrome/satin insert on the hub instead of the woodgrain insert that was used in years past. Now, that wheel WAS new for the Impala, which had used a wheel without the woodgrain hub, but not the CC.

      Yep. The Olds 350 diesel (and 4.1 liter V6 diesel) was available on pretty much every GM mid-size to full sized car from 1979-85. In both front wheel and rear wheel drive applications. That's why it was so destructive to GM's reputation. It infiltrated every GM division. Very many were produced and sold from cheap Chevys to top of the line Cadillacs and every car in between. That's why they're still paying for the sins of that engine 35 years and a full bankruptcy and government bailout later. Many people got burned by that engine in all classes of cars.

      1985 was the last year. By then the bugs were worked out but the reputation damage was done.

      Could you characterize the type of person that would buy a slow ass, get to work mobile!? Toyota has always been an industry leader, but what they fail to realize is everything and everyone is not homogeneous. Otherwise GM would be no more. Thanks to technology I can myself make an 84 get modern gas mileage...Muscle.
