  • This episode takes you through some typical work days; wake up, coffee, work on the boat, maybe a supply run, work on the boat, try not to forget to eat lunch, then clean up, sleep, dream about working on the boat. This is boat life. It'll be nice when we get to squeeze some sailing in there ;) The starboard planking took 2 days to put up and 2 days to sand then soup. Let's keep our fingers crossed the port side treats us as well.
    Thanks for watching everyone!

I’ve had four very nice sailboats in my life, and four very nice nice wives over my 75 happy years. Not one of them would dirty their hands helping to maintain the boat. They were too busy rubbing oil on themselves and lying in the sun. Garret, you’re a lucky man.

If you get into any heavy weather you will have many tons of water on your decks that can't drains fast enough causing a dangerous list. If your lucky your bulwarks will get carried away, saving you from a knock down!

This one's for Ruth. As I've been watching each video I couldn't help but think "I've seen Ruth somewhere before".
Now I know where. I have a collection of music videos from RUclips, all nicely arranged in alphabetical order. I get to "P" and there she is. Petula Clark. And coincidentally she sings a song called "Sailor", a beautiful tune. But unlike Ruth and Garrett who sail together on their own boat, the singer in "Sailor" is a land lubber woman who appeals to her sailor lover to come home. Like I say it's a beautiful song, sung by a famous singer who reminds me of Ruth.
Have a nice day and thanks for the vids.

Unlike when you were on the hard you are now getting the sun off the water. Stay hydrated. If you're not urinating you're getting dehydrated. That is hard on the body and hard on the mind and leads to mistakes and accidents. A sports drink or two during the day may be needed as the days get longer and hotter. Be safe, be smart, be productive. The boat is looking good too. :)

The "flush here - concave here" problem can be solved by splicing the two long lengths together with a 7" or 8" slanted cut; the two ends epoxied and clamped together and in perfect alignment on a flat surface. This makes one long piece - from bow to stern - super flexible and bendy piece that easily conforms to your bulwark lines. I was a boat builder for twenty years and that's how we did bulwarks, caps, stringers, etc.

I think I may have laid the sixth board up at the bow just to see how it would have looked. It sure would give you a bit more of safety height on deck... But I've always been safety minded. My grandfather drilled safety first into our brains as kids. I'm so grateful for it now 60 some years latter after seeing what happened when others didn't use safe thinking...
The boat sure is looking mighty pretty!!!!!! be blessed... BBE..

I was wondering why you didn't put spaces in between the planks, so water would be able to flow off in rough seas. Now if a big wave goes over the planking & bulwarks it could possible tear them off or at least loosen them I notice you only put a small space on the very bottom for ropes to go under, but it looks like only a thin ropes will be able to fit. That small space is definitely not enough space for water runoff in rough seas. I'm not criticizing I just want you two to have the safest & strongest boat while on your sailing journeys. Peace & love The Bentley.

so stoked for you guys! rediviva looks amazing...you both are doing such an incredible job. i have to laugh at the youthful vigor of you though...hahaha...i'm sure that the very cool, very salty looking bulwark will, over time, 'distort' as wood does, and the edges will not be perfectly fair for very long! but it won't matter, because they will be perfectly built!! the bulwark looks bad ass!!...and even though it is 'tall', it is salty, like the crew that will rely on it, and from my experience, it will be a wonderful 'dodger' of spray, and even sun...i think it's perfect!!
the interior looks great as well, and i can't wait to see it finished! i think you guys made a really good decision with the center engine and cover...i'm looking forward to seeing the eventual configuration that comes from it...

all i can say is, stay patient and keep your sense of humor. you are building YOUR OWN boat from scratch...fucking amazing!!!
she's going to be the most incredible boat you have ever sailed, and take you everywhere you ever wanted to go...just hang in there. you are almost to the FUN part...rigging her out!!! by the time you are buying cable and garrett is swaging his terminals, or eyesplicing his wire, you will be on CLOUD 9, and deservedly so!! the margaritas will be just as cold when you arrive!
    all the best!!!!

As a life long sailor my two bits : The Bulwark looks properly proportioned to the boat . With the high bow i can't see a need to go any higher , but i would add a cap as frosting on the cake . I had friends years ago with a seabird yawl fairly similar Red Adiva , they sailed to Hawaii and back with no navigation ( before GPS ) , refrigeration or engine . The drainage issue could be remedied by cutting in some scuppers a mid ship . Thank you for sharing your boatbuild ... smooth sailing

1 way to ease the curve on the bulwark strakes might be to put some rags over the flat spots and pour on boiling water. Combined with a bit of bracing and clamping, you should be able to get a fairer curve. True that scarfing to make full length strakes would be a "proper" boatyard solution, but I can see that with just 2 of you working, shorter lengths may well be better. Those dirty great lengths, working over the water, could well be too much to handle. Good work, shipmates, keep on keeping on , bruv and sis.

Guys, love your channel, been watching for ages....A quick question. What happens if a big wave crashes onto the boat, will all the timber planking on the sides trap the water & not let it drain quickly enough off the deck? Could the force of the water push the boat onto its side? Wouldn't it be better to leave spaces between the planks??..Sorry spoken like a true land lover, who has no idea about the ocean.... Hate to be a nit picker but you should have treated or at least primed those. You can paint them installed but the naked butting joinery edges and bits against the supports will soak up water like a sponge. The water wicks into those areas Since they are in already caulk the seems. I am trying to help here...love you both. I am a painter/carpenter for a living.

You see those Harbor Freight clamps in a lot of DIY videos. I have a few of those.
