  • Our final weeks of water life are upon us. Do not fret we are super excited about our haul out. In this episode we take on the sampson post and installing our house battery bank. The sampson post is our last big construction project while at Judy's dock. It went smoothly. We took our time while also tackling the battery box in the middle. The sampson post is a crucial part of our anchoring set up. We won't use it all the time but when we need it it will be there and be strong. We've gone with 4 6volts paired in series to make 2 12volts then paralleled to double our amp hours. So far the best battery set up we've experienced is with 6 volt batteries. We may add another pair of 6volts down the road but for now we're really happy with our capacity for power. Next episode we finish up a few other system installs and then take the dinghy out for a little day on the river! The preparations are near complete. Haul outs have become such a normal part of life for Garrett and I that we can truly be excited and not fearful. It's the best place to get a LOT of boat work done. We can't wait to set up our work space and get these last big things done! Then we can look forward to our next stage with the boat, anchoring ever closer to the open ocean :)
    Thanks for watching everyone!

After 3 years sailing in Mexico on our Westsail 32 (taking a year off this year) I found I want to put a stainless steel rod thru the samson post (permanent) to help keep lines on. Also I would be concerned with the tight fit of the battery box. I have 6 AGMs (540 amps) on the boat and the will swell and contract a bit. I would hate to see a case crack on you. You need more air flow in the box to allow for a faster heat dissipation. The batteries can get hot when the solar is cranking out the amps. Don't skip on the charger and solar controller. They will make a difference. We are 100% solar on SV Nellie Jo and only use a portable inverter when we need it. We stay out for a least a month at a time so we depend on a great solar setup. We have 580 amps of solar to charge our batteries. It's rare when the sun cant keep up.
Have you thought of a water maker? We built our own and we outperform most boats store bought units. We make about 40 gallons an hour. We do use a Honda 2000 generator to run it but that is all we use it for except to run major power tools if needed. This last March and April we made over 900 gallons of water while at anchor. We gave most of it away to other cruisers. The generator does not use a lot of fuel and can take a beating. Mine got completely submerged 3 years ago and just keeps on going.
We are like you guys we want to be self sufficient when we sail.
Great videos and we hope to see you out there!

When I was 8 I made my first boat: a canoe made of raw planks caulked with tar gunk and jute cloth. My ass got pitch black while the vessel(?) slowly sank 5 feet from the ramp. At 16 I started logging timber. But as a wild novice I was, I soon dropped a big log on my right foot, which had undoubtedly - hadn't it been for my steel caped toes - ended my pro career. So when I see the quality of the workmanship in hull and battery case construction as well as the steadfast attempts to hinder bodily damage I cannot avoid these childhood flashbacks watching Salt'n'Tar videos. Hmmmm, why?

I used to do the very thing of course it's maintenance and something you have to keep in practice because nothing last as long as you think .
I don't use Vaseline anymore there's actually an electrical Lube used when you're using aluminum wiring or aluminum with anything it's inexpensive get it at any hardware store in the electrical department you don't have to use it on just aluminum connections to other metals you can use them on anything and it will last and hold up much longer than the Vaseline I've been using that religiously for quite a few years now and I have noticed it works better and last longer the whole life of the battery and probably longer I've never had Vaseline do that .
I went and found what I have it's called ideal I know I got it at Lowe's or Home Depot .

Unless Garret decides to weld with the batteries there isn't a lot of load,M well not for longer than starting, batteries only get hot when they pass current, so it's unlikely that they will ever get warmer than ambient. We used to have a 1000ah battery at 110v at work, testing inverters. It never got so much as warm even on full charge.

Hope that battery box does't swell much. I always think it is best to make the box slightly bigger then pack out the space, this will also help air circulation.

    • @henryphelps3590
      @henryphelps3590 5 лет назад +6

Good point the battery swells and contracts also with the heating temperature and most likely will do it with the Box the tight fit in the less vibration the longer the batteries will last and that's the goal for the outcome but I'm with you I would have built the Box bigger but big enough to put a piece of rubber all the way around help with the expansion and contraction and more of the vibration helping the batteries last longer any Farm and Ranch store you can buy the big trailer pads good half inch thick rubber make nice pads for batteries . great protection against conductive corrosion too .
I will use wood usually a scrap piece of plywood between all my batteries and any metal surface but a good thick rubber pad is my first choice . wood still has conductive properties but will still help the battery with protection of the conductive properties of metals . I have replaced or lined many metal battery boxes with wood but also meny ideally with rubber .
if you're really into maintenance and love doing the sort of thing you can make a battery lasts forever by just cleaning it . Feeling it with distilled vinegar letting it sit for around an hour never longer then three or four . I will add a couple of pinches of baking soda to each cylinder of the battery I will let it sit a minimum of 8 hours to overnight not much more than 12 hours ideally drain fill it with distilled water drain it and repeat one more time to flush it, a lot will use distilled water I always buy battery acid and replace it . which I admit I'm not one that does it as regularly as I should . an old friend passed and gone now had 4- 6 vole deep cells just like those he kept alive for over 50 years on a little solar system in his little A-frame cabin . Before solar a home made windmill with an alternator . I had four that I have used in boats & campers . I haven't been good at keeping up with the yearly cleaning maintenance like he did I only have one good one, three I just didn't think about it they froze and to replace them well over double the price now then when I bought them . solar has always been a little hard for me to get on board with because in the beginning very much creating the same Hazard even worse than batteries creating a hazardous waste problem because they're hazardous material have to be handled properly . too many people I talked with that had installed them already filled with regret for the expense wouldn't pay itself back until they were well Dead and Gone .
I have learned that the panels are made much more friendly and with much less hazardous materials now I've had a few quotes cuz I still believe it's a good thing it's nice to see the prices has stayed pretty evenly it's about the same expense now as it was when it first came out to have it installed . but it's still hey system that needs maintenance and most likely it's going to take eons for the expense to even pay you back .
I keep trying to put an end to this but somehow I feel I could write a book .))

      That’s some reply Henry :)
I’m in the aviation industry and have seen batteries swell like balloons, especially on turbine aircraft. On GA aircraft batteries usually sit in an aluminum box or tray, if on a tray they are clamped but at least air can pass over them. We also paint the trays/boxes with acid resistant paint which helps if they vent on board or there is a spillage.
I’ll stop there otherwise it will look like we are having competition ;)

@@henryphelps3590 Lived off grid for 20 years with big lead acid scrubber batteries (160lbs a piece). They have AGM batteries. The close contact would be an issue for me with lead acid because the excess heat would mean re-watering the batteries (even with recycling caps) more often. Batteries that move actually require less maintenance and less of a need for equalization because stationary batteries dont shake the plates clean. Of course excessive movement can lead to an internal short in lead acids but not an issue with AGM's.
They made the right decision, and space is likely at a premium so opting for a battery that can be densely packed is smart (too bad they couldnt afford LiOn.

You might have to upgrade your wire because of the mount of panels you are going to install but what you have for now should work fine but please check what solar panels you might be using to see what is recommended . If you drop a tool and it shorts out you can't even reach down to pull it away and everything turns into a ball of sparks and molten plastic! I have a small wrench I use around the batteries often and I have covered enough of the handle with electrical tape so that no matter how it fell on the batterys it could not reach from one terminal to another.

Word of caution... these LifeLine AGM WILL get hot at some point, and being this close to each other will not be able to dissipate their heat to the surrounding air, but only into each other... this will significantly increase the risk of cell damage and / or a meltdown / fire!
It could be better if there's room around the batteries where they have space to breath, and as Henry Phelps pointed out, where they can swell.

Aren't you worried that the battery compartments might be a little tight. I'm not sure, but I think batteries shrink and swell with change in conditions and charge. Just a thought.. If they are too tight, and you get any swelling, the box may have to be disassembled to remove a battery..

Take this from a retired carpenter or not, but you might want to think about protecting your foot and toes when handling big lumber. It will only take one time of a 6x, or 4x, falling on your toes to force you to not do it again with bare feet. There are many many nerve endings in your feet, along with a multitude of tendons, ligaments and cartilege, and when and if that time comes when a big timber falls on them, your gonna know it, not just for the moment but for weeks to come.

This one's for Ruth. As I've been watching each video I couldn't help but think "I've seen Ruth somewhere before".
Now I know where. I have a collection of music videos from RUclips, all nicely arranged in alphabetical order. I get to "P" and there she is. Petula Clark. And coincidentally she sings a song called "Sailor", a beautiful tune. But unlike Ruth and Garrett who sail together on their own boat, the singer in "Sailor" is a land lubber woman who appeals to her sailor lover to come home. Like I say it's a beautiful song, sung by a famous singer who reminds me of Ruth.
Have a nice day and thanks for the vids.

Hi...great work and love to watch it all come together. I've repaired boats for a zillion years now and sailed a fair number of miles. You must be getting sick of comments. I do agree with what some people are saying about the battery box. It might be a bit tight when the dang things swell. My though is about that goliath of a sampson post. My concern is with sailing. That much weight forward will really slow the boat down at sea through hobby horsing. On my sail across the Pacific I had to bring 325 feet of chain because of the deep anchorages and reefs. It really slowed us down and it got critical a few times. Too much weight forward. If I had to do it again (and I am...I'm going with far less chain. Your mast which is keel stepped is perfect tie off point.

Batteries need air space to cool! If they swell.....you'll never get them out!!!!

I'd give consideration to twin stern posts to attach a bridle for a sea anchor to. Because of my constant urge to complicate things I probably would have tried to mortise the bow post.

PS when I was your age I built a log home in the Yukon with no previous experience....lived there for 22 years. $100 /year property taxes....lol. Installed solar myself also in '88.

As always, it is a pleasure to be notified of your postings! I love the sturdiness you put into all the details of the build, and I can relate to the feeling of building a strong unit through all the components. Since all the pressure on the sampson-post will be inwards - do you consider fitting an 8x3 or 4-inch block under the deck, between the post and the next deck-beam aft?
    Cheering on 'ya! :-)

I made that remark to a young man who was outfitting a Falmouth 22. He shut me up by replying that if I really wanted a boat like that all I had to do was use my savings and pull some equity from home. Easy. He said quit whining. Of course he was right. I was choosing my life. I just was dreaming of having my cake and eating it to. Lots of us could have the boat if we made it a priority. ah, but getting the girl? That's a harder trick.

Joe Oden A girl like Ruth is more what I'm talking about. People like her are a rare breed. Garrett is one lucky SOB. I'm not trying to hit on his wife or anything, I'm just speaking more generally.

WOW, the Battery Bank... perfect fit box, but have you read the comments?
First, You need to deal with heat in the battery bank. Tesla learned this early in his vehicle development.
Then of course, tin all your connections Or in other words, soldier them.
And in a marine environment I am sure you should use dielectric grease to prevent corrosion.
You may want to rethink your battery mounting system.

I wonder why you didn't oil the post before final installation. Plus, I believe you'll want to relieve the corners below deck like you did on the stem. Does that windlass need overhaul? Surely it needs paint. I reckon off the dock and up in the yard would be the best place for that.
As for your drawings of the sprit hinge, a caution is being very clear on dimensions when taking it to Rolf. One craftsman to another, even if on the same page, each have their own methods. So one is talking of inside dimension and the other is thinking outside dimension. I've experienced that before, nothing that can't be fixed but can be frustrating. This video is exciting for it shows the end is nigh. I'm already looking forward to the next episode.
