  • Settling into our new dock home for the season. The bilge pump has quieted down and we've been able to catch up on some sound sleep. A huge thank you to both Leo and Captain Ron who helped us push and get the deck seams filled before the rain sets in. Swabie's enjoying being aboard full time with us! Before the bulwarks and in the boatyard the truck had been his dog house. We're making more time for pleasure and not JUST building the boat, which is about damn time!
Thank you so much for watching everyone!

Ruth, you are lucky after one week sunshine. Me living out side of Coffs Harbour in NSW Australia over the last 2 plus months we have had overcast and rain or mist. We have been luck to get a day or two with sunshine. Mind you it's good since we have been in a drought and of-cause the bush fires for some time. But enough is a enough. Congratulations on your five year building, when your old an gray you will have great memories to look back too. Glad to hear the infiltration of water is slowing up, don't know if the local hardware store would have that many corks. Had a teak deck I put on a 70 foot boat for a customer. Planks sawn from teak 2 X 12's and applied to glassed ply decks. This was back in the late 1070's and had product the customer bought that had to be mixed and ladled into tubes for application. What a mess but figured out the tape method quickly. Ended up looking pretty good. Watching you guys work I know I won't be disappointing with your outcome. Will look fantastic I'm sure.

A Boat is a hole in the water you throw money at and that thirst never gets satisfied. Saying that at 67 years young I have owned and built everything from 7 feet long to 120 feet long with over 200 vessels and many trans Atlantic and trans Pacific passages including major races and just for the hell of it crossings. I am prejudiced toward dagger board catamarans because they go four times the speed of a monoram and have a much better ride comfort. I do like all kinds of sailing and it is heart warming to see people called to the love of the seas and making it a lifestyle rather than a hobby. Love tour Vlogs and updates, keep up the good work and may your keels see many hundreds of thousands of miles and many cold beers to your complete enjoyment.

Yeah I heard that many times ..but is it worth it if you live aboard...by yourself??? Vs renting a place or home?? What you think ...hole in the water.

    • @yonatanbenavraham6598
      @yonatanbenavraham6598 4 года назад +2

, in California where these nice folks live has the highest property value and rental property and some of the highest in the nation. Every house has a value, dock fees cost a lot. Most boats depreciate in value while most houses raise in value. A boat that sells in 2009 sells for less on the market today than a house in the same year as of now. Both have the same cost in upkeep but houses have remained going up in value where a live aboard boat has always depreciated consistently in value. I have owned many self build boats, they have always appreciated in value as long as I didn't keep them too long. You live aboard to escape the fake value market. It still doesn't make your boat appreciate your value of all the things you do. A boat is indeed a hole in the water you throw money at.

People whose mind-set leads them to accounting and investment discussions when talking about boats vs. dirt homes need to go buy or rent a dirt home. You don't get it and, most likely, never will. It's ok though. The dirt home life is no more appealing to us than the boat life is to you. When you get tired of your view out the back...or the "neighbors"... what do you do? We move to a new achorage or marina. Too cold? Hot? We get going north/south. We take our vacation home to the Keys, Bahamas and stay for as long as we like.
If you ARE going to start accounting for costs then be honest about owning that home. Don't forget depreciating items like A/C systems, your roof, appliances, pool equipment, hot water heater, water treatment system, driveways, siding, landscaping/plants, on and on. There is more expense over the years than most realize...or want to admit. Did your home appreciate in value? Sure! At face value it did. Don't forget to subtract out all of the above from the sale price when you calculate your "profit".
      Ruthie and Garrett rock.

@@marineman2298 If the truth be told my Boat building habit was financed by being a building contractor buying and remodeling older homes plus new builds in the course of thirty five years. I never purchased a new boat over 40 feet because the used market was far more affordable. Buying an older craftsman home and remodeling it or two or three during a winter I made huge profits. Buying used daggerboard cruising catamarans because they are the best cruising boats never made me that much profit but you can't put a price on fun. I built big mono hull sail boats and sold them after getting all the kinks sorted out. For myself and family with my employees my contracting business left us living comfortably while vacationing on our boats. Now at sixty seven years young a live aboard is very appealing. Maybe next year, but the blood sweat and tears of young people putting all their resources into a self built boat is why I watch every episode and enjoy it. They will never get their money back but it is their private space that they love. To live your life doing what you love to do is every ones dream.

"We are six months into what we expect to be a one and half to two year project" A quote from episode one. Now five years later.... I am not laughing, my boat took years longer to finish than I thought. You can tell how long it has been when you look at footage of Swab. He has gone from a puppy to an old dog with a subsequent change in behavior. I have loved this series from the beginning and admire your tenacity and almost constant cheerfulness. Well done. Coiling the power cord around the Sampson post creates induction coils which waste electricity as heat. If you draw enough current (which you almost assuredly won't with your usage) you can melt the insulation and cause a short circuit. Great intro, your usual kickin' content, and pretty darn decent music make your standard, eminently enjoyable Salt & Tar episode. Thanks!

Very tasty game fish and if you have any kind of social media many Chinese people will pay two dollars a pound for the heads and fillet removed carcasses for fish head soup, I lived in the bay area when I was younger and caught lots of Strippers and I had lots of Chinese friends who would fight over Strippers and Albacore.

Our house flooded in Harvey. Our wood floors swelled, and then shrank. I started fixing them sort of like your boat. I taped off each crack, but filled the cracks with a mixture of polyester resin and diatomaceous earth. It worked okay, but took too long. Then I started filling with the same mix without taping. Of course I scraped off the excess mix and let the floors harden. Then I sanded it with a 7 inch circular sander. It worked great. Try it.

I follow the building of Rediviva since the beginning. I like the project and the enthusiasm of Ruth and Garrett. But somethimes I wish - while watching the latest video - I could say stop and give an advice. I never worked with polymer glue from Loctite I always used Sikaflex. But I am sure the one from Loctite will also shrink an you should not flat it with your finger. You will found Lower spots which doesn t look great after sandpaper the deck. I also use a primer pefore filling the gaps. That cause a better contact to the wood. Greets from the Baltic isle Fehmarn, Holger

My favorite filet knife: Mora with 7" stainless blade. Flexible, but not TOO flexible like a Rapala.

OMG that's a lot of work to caulk the deck timbers. But I guess if you do it right you do it once.
    Fair winds.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Garrett says: “If it gets rained on now there’s no way water can get to the plywood”. Hmmm. I like your confidence but don’t be tempting fate like that m’ boy. That’s an overwhelming amount of caulking and a staggering amount of money too. You saved on labor though. Don’t ever do the minimum wage math on that over a 5 year period. Lol. Good thing that you’re young, strong and ambitious. Great work and always interesting videos. Thanks, now get back to work. Lol!

30 tubes at $5 a tube is a staggering amount of money to you?

JC1028 I saw the one bead from the bowsprit to not even the cabin front that I thought he said was one tube. Then didn’t they use several tubes to go around the cabin? By that I figured 150 tubes at least for everything (bow, sides, cabin top, stern deck) Didn’t she say that she cleared out 3 stores whole supply? I didn’t realize it was only 30. Guess I should have paid more attention.

@@garyfairbrother5532 They used a lot more on that first seam. They changed their method and taped the rest of the deck, using less caulk. All covered in the video.

Just curious. Knowing what you now know, would you have done the boat build or would you have found a good boat and spent this past five years in where ever ???

It has to come to mind that they could have worked for salary for the past 5 years and bought a completed sailboat.

Did you ever consider caulking with traditional hemp oakum and pine tar?

*Hey Ruthie, Striped Bass, Stripers or Rockfish as the Indians called them here on the Chesapeake Bay, are the best tasting fish, Sea Bass however taste like poop, I never heard anyone call Stripers, Striped Sea Bass? Sea Bass is a whole other species. Pocahontas even fed Rockfish to Capt John Smith! These fish originally come from the Atlantic Ocean and introduced to San Francisco Bay via trucks in the 1960s, they spawn so heavy at times in the Chesapeake Bay that you can just reach over the boat and grab them with your bare hands or walk into the water from the shoreline and grab them! Striped Bass is the State Fish of Maryland!*

This has been an absolument amazing and unique build to watch evolve from scratch. Wondering if a heavy wall steel sleeve for the mast base would be merited? Looks fragile without something to temper the leverage of the mast against the deck, something uncompromising extending down from the deck to the mast seat thru the living space. Just asking - I'm def no shipwright.

Interesting endorsement on the PL flashing caulk. Have to wonder why you didn't put a float switch in the bilge. I figure a nights sleep for two is worth the $20 for the float.
