  • With so many projects hanging how do you choose which one to work on? Motivation, materials, weather, and timing all play a huge part in that decision. We've gotten so many things done in the 4 months we've been hauled out. We also have still so many to do! In real-time we are relaunching tomorrow, November 21st! Our Patrons will get a little sneak peak video but the rest of you will have to wait ;) I'm really aiming once we are back in the water to transition to weekly videos as the mad rush on projects slow. Thank you so much for following along with our journey and well I guess I should get back to it!
    Thanks for watching!

    Having sailed traditional wood sailboats a great deal of my life, when I first saw your hard chined boat with its huge cabin, I was skeptical that it would be a thing of beauty sailing the oceans. But you have made a believer out of me. You are creating a wonderful vessel. Your decisions and revisions toward that end are inspiring. Congratulations on creating a beautiful craft. I cannot wait to see her in full glory under her sails.

    Your boat is looking more and more beautiful with the completion of each project. I can’t wait to see you start rigging her. I know that’s a ways off and I’ll just have to wait. The two of you are an example of teamwork at its best. Keep up the great work and you will be putting videos together somewhere on the high seas. 💞

    "Wood Butch to Boat Builder", Got to love it!! You Two have definitely graduated to the latter. Can't wait to see her in full sail...……...

    One of the things I really love about these videos-- aside from Garrett's obvious mastery of woodworking (if he doesn't already know something, he can quickly figure it out), and Ruthie's enthusiasm for even the most mundane tasks (she's a trooper, she gets it done!)-- is all the absolutely fabulous, diverse and eclectic music through-out.
    I truly enjoy that. All of it. And I know that's all Ruthie-- she gets to shine putting the vids together.
    Loved Garrett's line about graduating from a "wood butcher to a boatbuilder". Great attitude! You guys are great! Love ya's...
    I'm still absolutely blown slap-away by the stunning beauty of Garrett's bowsprit-- a bunch of boards randomly glued together was transformed into art. Functional art. Stunning.
    I'm a retired old fart with back and neck problems, and I play with wood on my good days. I enjoy that. So, you know, vicarious enjoyment watching Garrett...
    Your boat is finally becoming more than just a hull-- she's getting some beauty and definition (especially with the caprails and deck planking). Looking good!
    Hang in there, guys-- the interior is a whole new beast to finally conquer after all this. You'll do it. The mast and the stays, etc. will just follow naturally, I think.
    Rock on!

    Are there additional scuppers to be added to the bulwarks later? Seems that in a heavy sea, the mass of water trapped by the bulwarks and awaiting the opportunity to drain out the slots at the bottom will be significant. It’s not the weight that concerns me, but the force that water sweeping along the deck can apply to the stanchions....I’d suggest doing some math or a checking a builder’s reference book for acceptable rule of thumb. If you already have, good work. The boat looks great!

    • @SaltandTar
      @SaltandTar  4 года назад

      Thanks Christian. There's about an inch gap along the full length of the bottom of the bulwarks plenty room for water shedding. Most boats only have three or so places for water to escape so we've got plenty of space

    I have built a few lap streak boats, when I needed to form the Juniper keel I soaked it several days in a rain gutter to soften the fibers and make the bend easier. It looks like dry fitting is truly what you are doing. I wonder if that species of wood would bend with less force when soaked?

    Wonderful job you two! I have one concern. I think your going to need to add a series of drain ports down each side close to the deck. You'll see what I mean the first time your deck is awash in bad weather. It's not going to run off as fast as it needs to and might even back flow into the cabin. And freezing conditions along with the limited run off drainage could even be a bigger problem. Just a thought. I'm sure there's others on here that can relate to such an experience depending on their boat. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing.

  • @mikeskelly2356

    Just me, but I'd round off those cap rails with a molding bit instead of an ordinary rounding bit. Would definitely add a 'custom' look. And, about the King Post, Brass cap? Dome top? Bollard posts on the sides? Can't wait to see some more custom finishing from you guys. A lot of sweat and tears get left out of these vids, we get to binge on the juicy bits and don't have to feel the pain, but, that's why most people watch, but don't play, hockey... P.S. Really nice work, from an old retired sailor...P.P.S. Probably too late to help, but 'Z' scarfs work much better. A bit harder to fashion, but you end up with no 'pointy' bits to worry about peeling or snagging...

    Well done, Ruth and Garret.
    -Have you thought of adding a couple of grip-bars to the top of the cabin?
    -Will you smoothen the edges of the uprights holding the rail?
    -Shouldn't the transom have a swing door so you can embark and disembark and gain access to the dingy?

    • @SaltandTar

      Hand rails and such will come soon along with all our deck hardware. For now we step on the channels to get on board it's not too high. We'll probably have davits eventually to hoist the dinghy. She's coming together :) Big things first. Up next! Masts

    • @gs032009
      @gs032009 4 года назад

      R and G:
      SO you will also add cable hand-rails to the top of the uprights? It would be a good idea since the side boards are so low - about knee-level??
      -You can never have too many grip bars, and the two vertical bars to the left and right of the cabin door are also very common on many sailing vessels these days; it makes perfect sense as a holding bar when you step in or out of the cabin steps; is this in the pipeline?
      -Will you consider making the hardware yourself, cut it and weld it and then have a pro galvanize and polish? Or cast it [get tips from SVSeeker video series in YT!:-) ]?
      -Or you could build anchor points out of hardwood, insert a steel T into these to add sturdiness? So even if the wood were to break it would still hold the ropes?
      -Have you made plans to have a water pump inside? I believe I asked before but never got an answer. This is a wooden vessel so there will be small leaks in the future and it is wise to be ready.

    I don't know if you have had it surveyed yet for insurance purposes but you may want to look into that. A friend of mine bought a boat and it turns out the lines were wrong for the hull and he could not sell it or get it insured. I only say this because you are new to boat building and you don't need any major mistakes to ruin your project. Looking good from what I see.

      We looked into insurance for future marinas sake but it's hard to find anyone who wants to work with wooden boats even a brand new one! That's ok we prefer the vagabond way of life. Self sufficient on our own gear. Garrett jests that our anchor gear is our insurance haha the cost is also way high and the likelyhood that any surveyor would know what they're looking at is low since Redivivas a bit out of time. Most deal with only fiberglass production boats these days

    that is really tight grained cap rail. But you should see what really tight grained D fir looks like, it's twice as tight grained and has a completely different coloration, smell, everything. When old growth D fir was all there was it lasted as long as shingles and shakes as redwood and cedar. And it was twice as strong. Everything that you can buy today as a commodity is crap compared to what was available 40-50 years ago.
