  • Garrett has had continuous back problems. Blame it on pour genes or the relentless work he puts his body through. He's learned the hard way that every once in a while he's got to take it easy! With a simple light task like shopping for materials for the boat and glueing just one piece of the project together we still make great progress and he hasn't wrecked himself for days. We're doing our best to stay positive during this haul out and checking at least half of what was on our list off. I'd say we're doing pretty good and a lot of that is thanks to all of you out there. Watching and supporting what we love so much. Rediviva is getting close to being ready to touch water again. It's looking like we'll be putting the masts up once floating as her hull is feeling the heat from the tail end of summer. More projects to tackle all that Up Next!
    Thanks for watching everyone!
    Many thanks and much love,

Pro tip for you Garret. if you want to bend your material. you can just submerge it in the sea at 20-30 meters deep for 2-3 days, when you take it up it is soft for 1-1,5 hour + the salt from the sea gets inside the timber and prevents/help against rott. I'm cheering on you two :-)

Be very careful of you back Garrett.
The first time I injured my back I was 22.
Spent the next 38 years dealing with back issues.
4 years ago I finally herniated a disc, and a whole wack of other associated damage.
It pretty much ended my career as a mechanic. I was lucky that the company I worked for let me run the shop for them so no heavy work anymore.
I retired at 60, pretty much because of the back.
Its not too bad now but there are so many things that I can't do anymore.
SO LISTEN TO THE PAIN, IT IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING
Slow down for a bit and give it time to heal

Wornout Wrench so true, I always had minor back pain but never enough to stop me. But been having leg issues for quite a while now , yeRs , comes and goes.....but it's my back causing it. Defiantly slowing my options of what I do next. A simple ex-ray or better MRI would have shown the problems years ago so I could have worked around it , done the right exercise etc. ( like discovering scoliosis I did not know I had even though that's not my current problem).not that I over abused my back but could have resolves it sooner. If nothing else walk your dog twice a day to keep the joints well lubed , It's is supposed to make a difference , it worked for my brother in law who came from a family of back surgery recipients ..he walked it off!..... cheers Warren

      @@CheersWarren Very true.
That was my fathers cure all. Go for a walk, he would say.
I took it a few steps further and bought a recumbent trike that I now ride. Get at least an hour a day usually try for 2.
Right now I am set up inside on a trainer. ( I hate the wet west coast winters that we have on Vancouver Island ). Something about the bent makes my back feel soo much better. When it gets really sore, I go and ride for a bit, usually the pain will go away or at least dull down a bit.
And the wee mutt gets his walks, he will not let me forget. But he is getting on in years too so we keep it under a kilometer now.

@@rev.jimjonesandthekool-aid4488 i just had surgery on my left hand and elbow.
nerve AND arthritis, to be certain
      the wrist is feeling fantastic
Doc told me that my elbow will take almost a year to heal.
after 2 months, my hand feel AWESOME, although my elbow is still very tender. all fingers have full sensory, with ZERO tingling/numbing over the course of a few minutes, and certainly not over a few hours.

youre getting to the age where stretching early and often will save you on some injuries. my work makes us do it and I thought it was rediculous to stop working to stretch. i now value it, big time. if its your lower back, look up the McKenzie method. it was developed by a back specialist hospital... just simple stretching, and explains why most people stretch their back wrong causing more damage

If you are building with oak make sure it's white oak. Pop built a small row boat out of red oak and it rotted out in a few years, of coarse than he found out he needed to use white oak.

Back problems : My Dad told me (when I was but a wee child ) that people complaining of back trouble were just lazy and trying to get out of 'work' . I believed that for years since I had no back problems . . . but many years later while working as an Air-Heat Service Tech. moving a heavy package heat-pump across a roof, found my back to be less than comfortable at the end of the day. My friend (& fellow cohort at work) happened to have an inversion table, and so that very evening while consuming multiple brewski's I was talked into trying inversion therapy to relieve my back discomfort . . . . . . the amount of relief was amazing ! And then I forgot about it .
Listening to a radio program by Dr. Bob Marshall, he explained that the spine can be purged of impurities better by use of an inversion table . (He is a Nutritional Doctor interested in healing the problem rather than a traditional 'Doctor' that just treats the symptoms) The use of gravity to flex the spine open helps it to stay flexible and healthy is what I got out of the narrative. Remembering my previous experience of discomfort and then relief, when my next experience of 'pain in the back' happened I went and bought an inversion table. Have never looked back as it is effective ! !
I now include an inversion session of only a count of 45 - with an up & back stretch-flex in the middle at about count 29 - in my morning exercise/stretch routine . Have not had another back issue since doing this . . . . . flexible and functional . (I am currently 68 years of age)

Excellent progress!! Remember, all the masters of their trade are self-thought. That is the only way to get ahead, by learning solely from others, one can only get as far they have. For the back problems, I highly recommend Yoga-Pilates-type of exercise to get warmed up before you get to work. That is the only way that works for me, and I have had back problems over 25 years now. breath and stretch, get the muscles warmed up with light aerobics, whatever works for you, but get warmed up before you pick up any tool. All the athletes do it, and for a good reason. After you set up to work, you forget that you have a bad/broken back, and that will always end up in severe pain.
    Trust me, I know.

And of course Ruthie. Your editing skills get better with each video. The shots you include are very informative and there a beautiful "filler" scenes.
Psh, I thought working on a deck in my backyard was frustrating as hell. Throw in curves and its a whoooole other ball game. And not to mention the inconsistencies in the wood!! Twisting, bending, cracking. I am in awe of your abilities to work with wood and have the pieces fit together like a puzzle.

Garrett, you don't need a steam box to bend wood. Also, the less wide a board is, the easier it is to bend. Also the longer it is, the easier it will be to bend it. When bending a board, wet it, then apply as much clamping pressure as possible. Let it sit, watering every once in a while. In the morning, water it again and apply more clamping pressure.

20:38 A boarding gate would be nice. Depending upon what you have hanging off the transom (wind vane, etc) you could locate the gate port, st'brd, or center. However, a gate off center may require an additional stanchion (or, sistered to existing stanchion). Also, a bronze cap for the sampson post would be in order. All in all, she's coming along nicely. G&R, great effort.

2x12's need to somewhat clear due to bearing for stairs, complicated roof and floor framing etc. Take this from a retired union carpenter carrying 30 to 40 pound tool belt and harness up 30 ft form walls all my life that surgery is not the right way to go, if you ever think about a quick fix. After my first one, which they fused 4 disc joints, they made a mistake and had to go back in 5 months later after ridiculous pain, and then 5 years later after calcium deposits and scar tissue from the surgeries caused the same problem again. Sitting around too much after back injuries is what the problem is with injuries, so from a good physical therapist, find the right exercises to do to keep the area free of buildup and keep the area loose. Quick fixes with a knife seldom work out in your favor, but because most are lazy, look for a quick fix. Just keep moving, and keep the scar tissue stretched and calcium free from ligament and cartilage pulls.

Look up the book “heal your own back” or something like that. It’s about stretches and putting your your spine back where it’s supposed to be by yourself. It really works. Don’t even think about back surgery! You two are awesome. Thanks for taking us along.

You won't "think about back surgery" until the sciatica is so bad that you have foot drop, and the pain is so excrutiating that sitting is impossible, your only relief is lying on the floor on your stomach, and your methodology for getting some sleep is to stay up as late as possible, take a percocet and crawl to bed, wake up from the pain a couple of hours later and take another percocet. No amount of stretching will cure this, and you will thank the-god-of-your-choice that there are neurosurgeons and procedures that will remove you from a living hell. A blanket 'don't have surgery' is dead wrong.

    • @dozer1642

roscoe jones I was on my stomach on the floor agonizing in the worst pain I could imagine. Couldn’t even think about moving. Vicodin, Percocet went down like candy for days. I put my spine back in place by lifting my chin and arching my back slowly at first like the yoga stretch “dog looking up” or whatever it’s called.
Ive known many people that have gone through back surgeries and have never been the same.
Garrett is a young healthy man that can treat his back with simple stretches.

soounds like you are on top of the wood topic - but just be careful you dont end up with hemlock. Some of the big box store dimensional lumber is called "hem/fir". Often the best looking clear tight grained stuff is hemlock which has MUCH less rot resistance than standard D-fir. Anyway may not be a problem where you are - but just an FYI . Look for wavy grain and a good tell-tale sign.

Feel your pain with the back issues. Unfortunately it’s hard to slow down when you want to get work done. Better let the inflammation go down...

Another good one, making progress. Nice.I was wondering how you were intending fixing the cap rail down? I can imagine there might be some instability if it were just held by screwing into the bulwark edges, and the bulwark stanchions are presenting end grain, which is compromised in terms of holding power. I'm certain you have a plan, I'm just interested in what it might be =:-))

Big fasteners into the stanchions then 5200 to bed it ;)

They clearly have a close and loving relationship, but every once and a while I pick up a "Mom" or "Big Sister" vibe from Ruth. I think she is the adult in the room.

Garrett, I hope you are going to use some heavy duty hardware to secure that cap rail to the stanchions. No small mini screws here!

I was notified last night when Episode 63 posted. I went to your Amazon wishlist page and noticed numerous items you needed. I was on my iPhone in a theater which was not conducive to making a purchase at that time so I figured I'd come back this morning and buy you guys something. The wishlist was empty. Was it bought out that fast? Was I dreaming that there were items on your wishlist that I could purchase? Am I missing something? Anyway, I'm intrigued by what you two are doing as such a young couple. I'm not much of a Patreon, PayPal or GoFundMe supporter for my own personal reasons so I like the Amazon wishlist approach. Take care.

About your fall overboard, next time make sure the boat is in the water. Makes for a softer landing. Just an idea.

What is Garret going to do with himself during those long passages with no big wood working projects to work on ?
#2 (small tight knots) SPF is all you can find in the midwest and you will pay a premium for either of those over "construction" grade lumber.
