As an educator, I am always trying to find resources to help my students understand media bias and how they should really research the “news” they hear and the interest behind publishing that “news”. This is a great resource, especially the end! It really challenges your thinking!
Society we live in, our world is built that way ! Because people are lazy to come up with something better, or it’s possible it will just be lame, to keep things interesting we need to figure out how to stay motivated.
I do know that I'm being manipulated, & it gives nothing more than immense pain, especially when realizing that nobody else is realizing that themselves, & taking steps to resist it.
I think the consolidation and out-shouting of anything else by the corporate media - 6 major corporations own the whole media today, and they can overwhelm any other voices because they have the main channels of media in their control, and they can outshout and also control other channels of thought, like opinion journalists who pretend and claim to be independent, but we never hear a fun story - we hear what we are supposed to believe to be a good citizen worker in their opinions. Fake news is just one means to that end. It's bad, but I think we would not have fake news, otherwise known as lies, if it was not working somehow in conjunction with the corporate oligarch media. This really started getting bad round about the time of Rupert Murdock and FOX News.
By having a thorough understanding of psychology and social dynamics a population as a whole can be steered in just about any desired direction. We've seen this exact technique used very effectively during the past 18 months. It's fascinating really.
Today it is communism (inequality) and national socialism (racism) propaganda + climate propaganda = global socialism. The new world order they've been planning.
The problem is, the people pulling the strings, your strings, our strings, have put years of research into how do this effectively and imperceptibly. The manipulators have researched psychology and sociology and use our nature to nurture polarization and hot button issues that make people react emotionally rather than with logic and reason.
You can’t be manipulated unless you allow it. TV can blast away about how bad politicians are. I look at their actions. I have the TV on foe noise as I play my online game or do my hobby art. I don’t spend hours on my game. I like watching videos and have a whole list. 90% haven’t even seen. When I get sick of looking at them I delete. I’m just on RUclips. Not interested in any other social media. I don’t watch every video that comes up. I watch one, get a thousand recommendations and block them. I only saw one thing. Don’t need others of that search. I don’t have an IPhone, I listen to my three Star Trek audio books to fall asleep to. I wake up and turn my tablet off and go back to bed. I don’t need to be online all day because I choose not to.
3:25 Notice what he does here - "Any information or opinons you come across could plant the seed of an idea in your head without your realizing it." He says this like having a new idea is an unwelcome thing, especially from an "Untrusted" source. Are we supposed to not talk to our neighbors or socialize? Are we supposed to watch only mainstream news? We are made to learn and grow and develop as people. If we don't we stagnate and get stuck, repeating the same mistakes over and over. Mistakes aren't useful unless we MAKE them useful by learning from them, taking an opportunity to learn independently.

But as I remember a "News" article only needed to answer a few simple questions and anything more than that was no longer "news" it became "editorial". It's my view the biggest problem with our so called "news" today is that it is extremely hard to find any that isn't editorial in one way or another. When people only had news papers the "news" was on the front pages and the "editorials" were in the back. There was a clear and distinct line between the two. That's not to say the news was free from being editorialized but when writing what I call a "pure news" article that only serves to answer the 5 questions insertion of bias becomes more difficult and was often reduced to nuance and subtlety. The same can be said about television news, the editorials were on very late night and Sundays, the hard news at 7 and 11. I think a huge part of the problem is people simply don't know that news doesn't tell you how to feel, or if it's good or bad. All "news" does is answer five very simple questions - who, what, when, where and how. The problems arise when these questions have different answers from different sources or when they start telling you how to feel.
Yourube manipulates individuals too, I'm not surprise that this has only 120k views after 3 years. They're Ll in the business of canceling people who speak the truth.
Perhaps we should teach our young people about marketing concepts and how they work. The idea behind imagery and what it does to shape opinions. Sounds, smells, colors.....all are put to work. The descriptive words that reporters use are very good 'tells' about the real intent in influencing the listener or reader's opinion. Deep down we know certain words have a negative connotation, but when delivered in a sugared tone our radar doesn't seem to pick up on it. The BIGGEST problem are the tech giants and greedy corporations who put America last and their pocketbooks first.

I agree with him. But, it is totally possible to have a shark on the Katy Freeway after a hurricane. Houston is 80 miles from the coast with a rise in sea level of one foot per mile. Heavy flooding can bring in all sorts of sea life and swamp critters.

Especially, when I get a meme, first I look to see what is said about it before I might forward the meme. If it's funny but not true, I might forward it but with a caption saying that it's not true, but funny!
The best sources to check for news would be the people that are actually there on the ground like they used to be. And the second page of Google is not the best place to check for your news.
I believe the media is manipulative and this is my list of the reasons 1-In any Tv interviews the anchor is forcing the the guest to say something that's he don't wanna say at all by asking him side questions that any answers will lead him there. 2-shutting down the guest in interviews for making a certain point and doesn't let him finish a point he's making some times even the sound get cut. 3-the media claiming that they say the truth and nothing but the truth but how many times we caught them red handed lying to our faces. 4-the fact that everything that appears on tv gets prepared before it got broadcast by the News Crew and producers make me questions it! How iam going to trust those people that I don't know to tell me the truths about any topics they discussing. Their motives and agendas can't be truste because it's up to theme to decide what News to put out there on daily basis. In brief media purpose has and been shifted of being the sound of the public to a tool to influence you to think or to act in a certain way.
I feel like this is not news for anyone under 50. I also find comedians that state they are doing news (the now redacted Redacted Tonight) have higher standards for sources and find obscure important matters we never would have heard about. For example, my state OH just mandated fracking in state parks in a bill named: revise number of poultry chicks that may be sold in lots. No one would ever read that law expecting to find a new fracking law. It's so ridiculous you have to laugh. And don't forget Fox news has testified they aren't a news source.

Excellent talk, particularly because I was looking for a way to explain journalism to a younger person. It made me even more acutely aware of the fact that it barely exists anymore. All I would add that I think is critical to remember is that news is a word. Some people use that word on their TV show as part of the title. There are no legal parameters for the word news. So declared a superior court in Florida when citing in favor of Fox News, being sued for lying. No I believe this case did not involve either slander or libel, which would make it a different legal situation. They were being sued because they lied. they reported incorrect details often, they made stuff up, misquoted people, but not always using words, rather by presenting the wrong context, leaning it a direction, it was not intended to go. Their broadcast contained all of the genius of adolescent ridicule. Ad hominem attacks and red herrings are bantered about, on a regular basis. "News, the judge stated, is just a word in the name of their television show" I am inspired that a young person is making this presentation. This is a bright mind, and a wonderful addition to journalists,trying to explain the media, in relationship to journalism,.... The inevitable conclusion, from the perspective of the journalist is a limited choice, and academically, the best choice is propaganda. The laws of journalism, exist within the sanctity, inherent to the title, and profession itself .To be a Journalist, is to adhere to ethical guidelines , and standards of practice. Journalistic integrity, on which their profession relied, and the public relies, included presenting credible information ,gathered in a factual manner, preferably firsthand by the journalist. This profession is extremely relevant to the First Amendment. If we do not use it anymore, it will certainly go away. I applaud this young man 🙌🏼👋🏼🙌🏾👋🏽👋🏻🙌🏻🙌🏾👌🏻
Information versus entertainment information and news are not the same thing and entertainment is irrelevant because most of what people consider news is simply opinion which is not the same as information
When Jimmy Kimmel makes fun of Donald Trump, I'm pretty sure his audience is fully aware that they are hearing a political opinion and not just absorbing "entertainment". When people watch their favourite news channel, they often have no idea that they are hearing political opinion which plays fast and loose with the facts - THAT'S the real problem.
Sensationalism in journalism is not a new problem, it’s been around for a very long time. The problem is that now opinion shows are presented as news; take for example Hannity or Tucker Carlson.
Notice who tells you the emotions ( particularly negative emotions) to feel and towards whom. You will begin to see patterns and teams. Then if your politically inclined watch the senate hearings in full on Forbes . Not chopped up , on Forbes clips it at least gives the full context. You can make your own judgement as to what’s going on.!
However... keep in mind that if a statement comes straight from someone’s mouth.. and you watch it live....and later, they deny it....it’s usually NOT fake news. 😉
That actually would depend on the entirety and circumstances of such statement. Anyone can edit a video leaving out crucial points that could make a specific statement seem to mean something other than what it was originally intended for. It would then still be considered fake news 😘
pdid2020 I could see this sometimes... however, cutting out things mid sentence, or switching up a live debate would be a whole lot trickier!! 😉 Seriously, the last live debate alone was enough for me to form a strong negative opinion . Even if everything else that came from his mouth was edited. His actions also speak louder than his words!! Cheating on all of his spouses, taxes, name calling, racism, hanging out with Epstein , replacing educated officials with his own children, dissing medical professionals, making friends with Putin, warning people of fake news before he was even elected ( something to hide??) His Tweets, Stormy Daniels , and his temper tantrums.... Etc. Etc. Etc. I seriously don’t know why people support this narcissistic, lying child. So.... there’s that. 😘

This is media...this is manipulative...this is facts but also propaganda. So the thing is we need more media literacy and biases aware.

There's a network of people that work to program us all. Positive and negative reinforcements are used for everything.

When people watch their favourite news channel, they often have no idea that they are hearing political opinion which plays fast and loose with the facts - THAT'S the real problem.
Journalists aren't held to any type of journalistic standards these days. Not just comedians.

Sensationalism in journalism is not a new problem, it’s been around for a very long time. The problem is that now opinion shows are presented as news; take for example Hannity or Tucker Carlson.

Notice who tells you the emotions ( particularly negative emotions) to feel and towards whom. You will begin to see patterns and teams. Then if your politically inclined watch the senate hearings in full on Forbes . Not chopped up , on Forbes clips it at least gives the full context. You can make your own judgement as to what’s going on.!

However... keep in mind that if a statement comes straight from someone’s mouth.. and you watch it live....and later, they deny it....it’s usually NOT fake news. 😉
That actually would depend on the entirety and circumstances of such statement. Anyone can edit a video leaving out crucial points that could make a specific statement seem to mean something other than what it was originally intended for. It would then still be considered fake news 😘
pdid2020 I could see this sometimes... however, cutting out things mid sentence, or switching up a live debate would be a whole lot trickier!! 😉 Seriously, the last live debate alone was enough for me to form a strong negative opinion . Even if everything else that came from his mouth was edited. His actions also speak louder than his words!! Cheating on all of his spouses, taxes, name calling, racism, hanging out with Epstein , replacing educated officials with his own children, dissing medical professionals, making friends with Putin, warning people of fake news before he was even elected ( something to hide??) His Tweets, Stormy Daniels , and his temper tantrums.... Etc. Etc. Etc. I seriously don’t know why people support this narcissistic, lying child. So.... there’s that. 😘
