    Love your enthusiasm! I installed a wood burner in the most recent build and I’m so glad I did, in the next I will install a diesel heater as you’ve done along side.. in the last van I only ran a propex which was lovely for quick instant heat but useless for keeping me warm all night or for drying clothes, it also dried my eyes nose and throat out so badly I’d wake needing to drink lots! My burners from Glastonbury so it doesn’t have the option to burn coal but once you master vent control you can make it through the night in -5 easily with some of the eco logs! You’ve done your research and as you said those vents are constant ventilation so you won’t suffocate and die! I drilled through the floor under the hearth and installed a vent hole using an unslotted plug which works a treat, the other great thing about burners are no battery drain! Have fun!!

      That clever regarding the unslotted plug. So your burner sits on a hearth say 500mm from the floor? And in that hearth on the van floor and the hearth floor you have that plug? So two??? Many thanks

    I was going to get one of these a couple of years ago. They were originally designed for use on yatchs/boats etc. So they a extremely safe with a automatic immediate fire out ability.
    Two things put me off. First was the cost.
    But also reports of very limited run time. It was said that you had to constantly feeding the thing.
    So Mel as you have used it. How often did you have a keep feeding it during the 3 hour burn?
    Can you do a test on how long you can stoke it up for before it goes out??

I use an aluminium pipe ...melted it once ...cherry red a couple of times but i soon learnt...i have a water spray nozzle for if it ever runs away but ive been using it for so long that i know its burn character...oh mild carbonmonoxide poisoning twice oppsie😨 but you learn real quick...your stove is safe as houses...id probably even turn my back on it and leave it burning where i would NEVER do that with mine!! Mine is rustic but i love it so much..i cook on it also😊👍 its happily burning away as i type bathing me in warmth

    Love your videos :) I just bought a Ford Transit 2012 moving van box car with 19 m3 room here in Norway, I will make into a low budget "stealth" camper with room for my offroad motorcycle at back.
    It has a 750kg lifting door at he back so it is perfect for taking in and out motorcycle and other heavy things (motorcycle is only 110kg) so it will still be able to haul a little cargo also if I manage to keep the weight down (3,5T max and it has 1150KG cargo capacity as it is now ).
    For safety it is a good idea to have a Carbon Monoxide / gas detector just in case, works if you have a leak in the car exhaust or gas leak also.

    The cold air outside the glass door is preventing the smoke on the glass from clearing. Once it's in the van it should be fine, just Crank it up for five minutes after it's lit well and the heat should clean it.
    I see most people only open the main air intake to get it going Good then keep it fully closed thereafter. The fire can then be fully adjusted using the secondarily air control lever.
    As I normally say, " you probably know this already". Can't wait to see it in place now all connected up mate! Great little stove and you're leisure battery will thank you for it! 👍👍👍
    Don't forget to think about one of those TEG stove top fans to circulate the warm air, making it even more efficient 🙂

      @@BigVanSmallWorld A single skin enamel pipe at the lower part would have been better for heat output plus you could put a flue thermometer on it to get a true reading off flue temp optimum 270F-460F which is the most important thing to prevent creasote and tar build up, if the glass goes black your doing something wrong ie under burning, to high moisture in wood under 20% ideal, great little stove that I fitted a Salamander Hobbit in my Latest van very toastie.

  • @HerrFrankenstein
    @HerrFrankenstein 4 года назад

    Thanks for the video... I wonder if it were only to keep warm whist you sleep... an electric blanket in your sleeping bag is efficient... whether or not the wood stove is safe or not is irreverent, it takes up that bit where the wet bar should go...

  • @debbie62140
    @debbie62140 4 года назад +1

    The dipping a wet bit of newspaper in ash thing that some people recommend for glass cleaning is messy and doesn't work well on baked-on tar. We use a tiny little squirt of really cheap oven cleaner and wipe off with a bit of kitchen roll. Cleans the glass a treat. In fact, here in France, some brands of oven cleaner are sold for ovens, BBQs, and woodstoves.

    Just be interested to know about the insurance for the van with the wood burner... Do you know if insurers that will sort you out?

    I'm not sure but you may be able to hook up a cold air intake to it , if you could it would help a lot in a small space with a small stove .

    If there were some holes in the outer wall of the double wall flue, some near the bottom, and some near the top, you would get air flow through them, putting more heat into the van, and cooling the flue further. Note, these are just ramblings, and worth what you pay for them, but I would do it :)

    • @BigVanSmallWorld
      @BigVanSmallWorld  4 года назад

      No no you need the flue to be hot to create the up draft of air so the burner works properly 👍🤓👍

    Good video Mel. I always thought people either go for Diesel heater or Woodburner, seems you have got both :). For me personally, I think it would be cheaper for a diesel heater as buying wood is not cheap. No place to store or dry out offcuts of wood for me.

    On a good note you can load up the left hand side of your queen size bed with wood.
    Every morning during winter you can wake up with wood.😉😉 'wink wink'

    You can put a small fan on top to circulate the heat better, and it will burn longer if you use hard wood and choke it back

      @@BigVanSmallWorld Mel,.. I dont mean to be rude or un-polite in any way. But! When I was in university paying to learn i was often told..oh buy that book for the answer? Ammm But! I did go on to a Master's environmental architecture and spent my time specialising in alternative energies. I even got many tradesmen certificate's. To get them I had to learn both plumbing and welding? Infact a company called NUheat in Devon? Offered me a for Free underfloor heating traing course..because by LW you are not allowed to have a pYed model in photo adds. They wanted more woman on courses and at that time. ( Unknown to me) it seems I was one of the only woman in this mans world. You will find pics if me in add in the world trade mag for plumbers. That was years ago. Believe it or not. I looked on the log burner site. Firstly its in $ and secondly i thought. Amm ill ask my mate Mel to give me a ruff estimate.rather than the performance of add up total only to be deleted ...but hay...i understand your not putting price on video because different postage Nd needs. I'm same needs basically as you. And..for regards post I'm almost live next door. .. so as a retired now almost 61yrs plenty of time on hands old lady...as nice as the fire looks. as long as its done safely a small woodstove in a van, boat, camper, is very possible as long as you follow the safety clearances from the manufacturer. When I lived on my sailboat I had a diesel fueled heater that was shaped kind of like your woodstove...had a nice window to see the flames. Enjoy mate!
