i almost couldn't watch you cutting that polystyrene , the blade when cutting it makes my teeth clinch and sends shivers up my spine . so you guessed right if you said i didn't use it . good to see your starting the base build
Love the videos. Just started converting my vivaro a bit at a time. Have slept in it for work over the years across the front seats. Put a slide out bed in the back a couple of weeks ago along with a case of beer and we headed off to Dorset for 3 nights. Best break we have ever had. I will try to watch some more tonight as I need to get a floor in and insulation.
@@BigVanSmallWorld I watch all your videos but i don't normally comment i all ways give the thumbs up, i have had my van nearly two years and i'm struggling for time to be honest but you and people like you inspire me along, i'm doing some work next week on the van thanks again Mel.....
That floor looked in very good nick. My Sprinter has that polystyrene in the ceiling - came like that - there is a ply layer with a thick velour over it, apart from where the roof vent used to be - there is a metal plate riveted & sikkaflexed to the van roof - too hot to touch on a sunny day, but the ceiling never gets very warm, so it obviously makes a huge difference - should keep your floor much warmer. I wonder if those deeper channels are for that tracking? Mine has that in - think someone called it Unwins track - was used to fasten the stretchers and seats in when it was an Ambulance.
Hi Mel, great video as always! Good to see your subscriber count going up and up! I like how you make everything seem so effortless. Nice to see that polystyrene being used instead of celotex.. that stuff is expensive! ✌👽👍
Hi Mel just watched your video on insulating your van floor with polystyrene from 2 years ago can I ask would you still do it that way or would you use some of these new products that are on the market that offer sound deadening and insulation ? Many thanks Terry H
@@BigVanSmallWorld my van didn't have a vapour barrier down when it was done previously and I pulled it up to put new rear seat in and it had sweated or condensation build up and was soaking and had started to make the metal floor rust. Finally, someone else who is reusing the van floor! Good idea about using it as a stensil for the insulation board! What brand of PIR board did you use? We've been looking at buying ours as we're doing it soon, all the R values and lamda values seem similar but the prices are all over the place. Also, where did you buy it? Hi Mel. I see you are using regular polystyrene for the floor insulation, rather then the more expensive celotex everyone is using 😄 just wandering if this polystyrene is doing is job. do you feel any cold coming from the floor? I am planing on using the same thing, much cheaper than that celotex. Thanks Mel!

Your a talented man looks brilliant that floor mm cool,, Mel got a question here to see if you know how I should do mine,,, am going to be buying a sprinter like yours, but I want to put in 2xrows of 3 seats so that's 6 all together 9 seater, if I inform dvla of the conversion of the seats when I go to insure it year after year do I still need to tell the insurance of the original seat conversion,,,, am thinking if I tell dvla I shouldn't really need to, what is your opinion mate
What ever you do be honest with the insurance. In the event of an accident (God forbid) they will use anything to get out of paying a claim, meaning that you could end up paying for any damages out of your own pocket. It won’t cost that much difference yearly. Good luck with your build. Ash from 🏴
Hi Mel, would you recommend using a vapour barrier in the floor and as we can't use the existing hardwood floor that came with the van due to it being a bit tatty is 12 mm hardwood ply from Wickes ok to use? thanks for the videos :)
Hello thanks for watching I have never put vapour barrier on the floor only because I never really thought about it sometimes it’s easy to over think things the wood from wickes is definitely the better quality that I have come across good luck with your build 👍🤓👍
But worth a note that the insulating qualities for this type of foam is quite low. However, i hear that the floor is the least important surface for insulating so you can get away with it a bit more. Is that right?
@@adamvincent-garland7699 At the end of the day, how much insulation you need largely depends on where you are planning to drive your van. If you're going to Scandinavia, the Alps or Canada in the winter, you need a well-insulated floor. Too. =)
