The way owners, managers, or CEOs treat people next to and below them in their business is really important too. I walked out of a great job opportunitiy because of the way the CEO treated someone underneath them. If you want someone to value their job and your business, you have to show you value that person, their development, and their goals/dreams to the degree that is appropriate.

We have to take ownership as owner operators. Low pay, uncompetitive benefits and/or poor training attract low quality employees, and those things signal to them that the enterprise isn’t very profitable, or that the owner is just milking it and not interested in long term growth

Treat them with respect and tell them you appreciate them.
I wasted 14 years of my life working at a horrible company.
And in the 12 years I've been there, not a word of appreciation. My bosses has dragged their feet on raises and constant broken promises on promotion.
And the worst of it, it was my own family.
Now I'm in different place being treated better, and finally seeing a future.

Companies should also look for older men who are looking for work, not just young guys. We, older guys, were taught good work ethics, made to go to work on time, respect our employers, take pride in whatever work we were told to do etc. My Dad said, this is how it was going to be and it was, o arguments. ALSO, don't be afraid to pay a little more to get a a quality worker.

I never claimed to be very good at what a company does years ago when I did job interviews. I always told the person interviewing me to show me what I'm supposed to do a couple of times, and I'll do my best to be productive. I also made it a point to tell my interviewer that one of my goals was not only to put in an honest day's work each day, but to try and make the jobs of people I work with more manageable by doing my part well. I hope that makes sense. Have a great weekend everyone!

This kind of business naturally has a low retention rate. The problem is that it takes no skill to start and tend to attract people who are just looking for a way to pay the rent at the end of the month.
The bonus you mentioned are great. You should think of ways to have a career path within your business. I used to do window cleaning and I tell you: everyone can do it, but not everyone was good at it. Recognition of one's secialization can be a way to improve retention. When people have an upcoming milestone to look forward to, they tend to stay motivated. Guess who was getting called for millionaire houses with 30k a piece pan of glasses? Not the new guy. Guess what job tipped the most? Exactly.
End of probationary period, maintain their call kut/overtime priority, seniority pay, bonus, promotions, etc.
Delegate easy responsabilities on a volunteer basis to reliable employees (ie: customer satisfaction survey, scheduling, etc...)
If you have a vehicle fleet, allowing your employees to keep the vehicle home can be another benefit that doesn't cost much as long as you can find a way to manage the fuel situation.
As Dave suggested, foster an ambiance of professionalism. Brand your business as "upscale". Have your employee know that part of the salary they earn is for that experience.
If you have a lot of applicants, but only struggle with retention, you can ask for background checks (references, criminal record check, etc..)
    Hope those ideas were constructive!

    • @DanielIles
      @DanielIles 5 лет назад

I read this in a book a while back, can't remember which one.
If you can't explain an idea in simple enough terms that your boss or co workers can understand is it really that easy? Or if it's benefit that you can't instantly convince them on is the idea really that great? Always taking the blame may help you sharpen your approach.

Construction and landscaping is hardwork and pays very little alot of smaller companies make good profits but offer they employees very little it would probably be best to see if you could go up on your rates and pay people about 15 bucks an hour because that is what most good workers in this business consider ok compensation most workers will stay also allow your workers to advertise and give them bonuses on every new customer they attract to your business.

Stop using assinine hiring policies-a resume only conveys so much, especially when you only screen by keywords. Had to rewrite my resume to use keywords to stand a chance with a big name company, and it stinks. Stop using scripts in the interview process and have a conversation. Pay your people well with incentives and yearly increases. Do not micromanage and scream and yell when someone messes up. Let your people do their jobs without you tying their hands with stupid rules and policies. Treat your employees with respect and like they are competent. Provide good training and schooling.
I carr about what I do, but I have hopped around trying to find the right employer. I get tired of feeling like an incompetent fool getting paid so little and have mercy on my soul if I break a rule or out a toe out of line.

Yep. I work in I.T. and I moved around alot in the first half of my career, trying to find a place that would treat me right and allow for a flexible work from home arrangement. I finally found it about 4 and a half years ago, and I have been at this employer longer than any other in my career. I actually left a higher paying job to take this one, because the flexibility and no micromanaging was appealing to me. As long as I get my work done they don't care what else I do. It's so great. Because I appreciate the environment so much, it makes me want to do my best work for them. More employers should be like this, they would have less turnover. Eta, and I still make a fair salary for what I do. Yeah, I wish it was more (who dosen't always want more money) but we get annual inflation matched raises, and combined with the other benefits I mentioned, I feel like i'm finally content where I am.
