my parents car that brings back memories was a 1981 mk5 ford cortina. it was previously my grandads who had it from almost new until he had to give up driving around 1990. i use to sit on my grandads lap as he would drive. u could get away with it back then. so many good memories... unfortunately it had to b scraped in 1996.

I had an almost basic 1300S in metallic blue however I made a few changes everything on it was MK1 Fiesta XR2 apart from the shell, box & front seats being Recaro Fishnets I also chopped & plated the nearside inner wing to accommodate a MK3 Escort 5 speed box complete with the correct 3 holes for the nearside inner wing engine mount I wish I still had her now

We’d a few 127s when I was a kid. My dad drove the bejaysus out of them, used to haul stuff like trailers of stone with them. The smell of the clutch is burnt into my brain. My brother learnt to drive on a brown one and managed to get it up to 90 though I reckon the speedo was knackered.
Our proper cars were sierras which we used to drive all over Europe in for holidays, once to Turkey.

check fuel quality, fuel pump and carburettor wants a checkover. the hot and cold idle will want setting up from memory, i think these were affected. should be good to go i reckon. provided timing is good. peak power should be at 5700 i think so the fact it "only" went to 6000 should be fine. my parents had shit cars as a kid. Vectras, Astras etc. the best my dad had was the 2.0 turbo 200hp cavalier. i remember him getting pulled over flying up the m1 with us in the back ( good parenting dad) doing over 100mph. great to see James back too. great clan of people.

Personally, I would do the basics first before considering an engine rebuild: 1. Fresh synthetic oil and filter, 2. Clean or replace the plugs, 3. Check ignition timing, 4. Check valve clearances. 5. Fresh 99 octane fuel. Next step would be to clean or rebuild the carb. Nice car and better looking than the Mk2 but only 85 Bhp versus 96 Bhp.

Sadly it rotted away before my eyes & then i snapped the driveshafts thru accelerating a bit hard so it ended up on the scrapheap :(

just keep drivin it itll regain its power over time after it gets run in and yes rebuild the carb or upgrade the carb to a decent webber when this engine was used in the mk2 cortina 1600e it produced 88 bhp and fit a short shift gearshift thatll stop it being like pot of soup tryna find the gears fiat strada 1005tc was the compedator for this car at the time

The 127 1300GT would have been its Italian rival in 82, & was generally seen as a more enjoyable drive than the XR2, especially given the 20% higher price of the Ford, & despite being slightly slower. Did it look as cool? Most people would say no.. Did it rust faster, maybe, slightly.. But you know what they say, the brightest stars burn... for..um.. less time.. Or something like that.. 🤣Plus, the £900 you saved on buying the 127 over the XR2 could have paid for a Stage 2 head, cam, alloys, some wider Pirelli P6`s, + a dose of Zeibrart rustproofing, & then it would beat the XR2 conclusively.. 😁

I owned a 1983 Mk1 for 14 years. I replaced the Ford carburettor with a Webber, which gave about an extra 10HP. I had to replace 2 drive shafts and 2 engines mostly because I neglected engine service. Max speed was 110mph with the Webber. I also owned 2 MK2 XR2's but they didn't have the same driving dynamics as the MK1. I drove it to the limit a lot of the time and never crashed because the handling was so good.

The only real on-paper rival to the XR2 was the Golf GTi- but with 110hp from a 1600 or 112 from the 1800 it destroyed the XR2….
I reckon it needs some more ignition timing throwing on, points set up & the missing power will return 💪🏼

Not much finesse and he wrote it off after a month or two on an icy road. I like these but just think they're vastly over priced for what they are.
