I actually started my journey with the Wii Virtual Console release of Ys 1&2's TurboGrafx versions. I knew the games were from 1990, so I remember being blown away by the fully voiced animated intro and amazing music!
I have Ys 1 and 2 Chronicles, Origin and Oath in Felghana on my PC waiting to be played. Got them years ago in a steam sale and they went to the backlog. But watching this has now got me really excited to give the whole series a go. Ya sold me! Thanks for making this video! Super informative and helpful! Also I've been watching some of your videos over the past few days. Gotta say I'm really excited to see you grow and hope you get tons more subscribers and views going forward! I very much like how you deliver things, no nonsense, very informative and very passionate about the subject matter! Keep up the great work!
I love love love that you enjoy the Ys Series so much!! The hype is real for me with Ys 10: Nordics coming out shortly! Thanks for putting together such a great review of which entry would be good to start with. We need to do a collab where we rank the series on a tier list!
Really good video! I kind of figured Y's 8 could make some of the older ones feel slightly underwhelming by comparison (even if everything is solid regardless), so it was helpful to hear these opinions. Just one small ask would be to check your volume levels. For the volume i had to listen to your voice with headphones, those subscriber dings were extremely loud. Aside from that, everything was entertaining.
Thank goodness I've stumbled upon this video. Ys 8 and 9 have been on my backlog shelf for years, and since I pre-ordered 10,, I reckon I should start playing them. I guess it's okay for me to start with 10 then. Thanks man!
This is a great video. I played through all the Ys games last year 😄. It was a rewarding experience. My introduction to Ys came with Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (SNES), which I found to be a series low point. I slept on the series until Ys VIII got stellar reviews, so I bought it and was pleasantly surprised. I feel that even though it's a timelined story of Adol's adventures, you can really start with any entry. Only, I wouldn't start with Ys II
Unlike the trails series each game is its own separate adventure. Adol likes to explore, sometimes he goes on adventures before going to his destination for an adventure. It’s like final fantasy and dragon quest just with the same main character with dogi tagging along.
I started with Ys Books I and II, which was the TurboGrafx remake via Wii Virtual Console. ( I almost played the DS Ys I & II, but returned it unopened when I heard it was a bad port.) I adored it and wanted more, played Oath and finished it. The rest are kind of in the backlog. So X jumping to earlier works great for me.
Answer is simple. Whatever one seems the most fun to start with. And once you're hooked on the series ideally then release order. Well 1/2 origin. Then whatever you'd like. Imo its more ideal to do the non party ones because they're more distinct tho in some forms they're less engaging. But with how much less tools you have going from party to bump can be pretty rough. Ultimately individual choice though. It really doesnt matter what order you play in as they're anthologies with some connecting tissue where enough info is given if you didn't play that game without spoiling what happens overall.
Found you with this video, I liked it a lot! I bought Ys 1+2 chronicles in the past but never started it, after watching the video I think I'll start from Ys VI: The Ark of Napshtim because it's the one that I am the most interested in, after Lacrimosa of Dana and Monstrum Nox (mostly for how cool the artworks look 😄), but it was great to know a proper chronological order and a good recommendation for a more free entry point!
Celceta was my third Ys game... and I actually really loved it. Especially Karna. Mostly Karna. Mainly Karna. But the story didn't BORE me either. I started with Ys VIII after playing Tokyo Xanadu and getting into Action RPGs again. I absolutely loved it and fell in love with the series! The first JRPG where I explored everything! I really want Karna to return.
I have Played Ys 6 (PC version) which is my entry point and Ys 7 (PSP Version) as my 2nd one, I like the game ngl and is planning to play each and every game I missed in chronological order.
I started with oath in felghana for the psp too. I remember seeing a trailer and the gameplay blew my mind back in the day. The one's i would recommend for new players are 6, oath, origin, celceta and dana. About the order, maybe start with dana, it's easier for new player to get hooked in. That game is probably still in my top5 best games ever. As someone once said "ys 8 makes you remember what made you fell in love with video games"
Started with Oath in Felghana on the psp when it came out, fell in love instantly with the Napishtim engine and wish we could get more like it. Such an amazing series
Dana and Laxia were the best waifus. But the new female lead in Ys Nordics looks so good! Can''t wait to play that one! I also played Ys out of order and I don't regret it lelelelel.
Short answer: You can play in any order. But the chronological order so far is Origins, 1+2, 10, 4, 3, 5, 8, 6, 7, 9. Play anyone you want. All of them are stand alone except 1 and 2. But I started with 8 then Origins. That gave me a good idea of both styles of gameplay. I have since beat 4, and 1+2. I look forward to the rerelease of the remake of 3.
Yep any order is fine but some are easier than others so that’s more the point of this video. But you’re right, you can jump at any point other than 2 and maybe 9
Ys Seven was my first game in the series and it was amazing. I don't really know much reason to not start with it. It is still my favourite as much of a controversial opinion it may be. I would recommend just going with it despite what anyone may say.
I think the first time I heard of this series was when I got a PSP, saw them in the store, and bought them... but uhh... I never got around to playing them. Kind of regret that now since I don't have them anymore. lol
I think the first ys game i played was oath in felghana and it really got me into the series, sadly i couldn't beat it, so the first one i beat was seven and that game actually marked me forever, that game is a core memory for me, i love that game so much
Oh I’m not saying you CAN’T play it as your first, but you definitely wouldn’t have the same experience as someone who’s experienced all of Adol’s adventures up until that point since it has so many callbacks to previous games in the series. It’s still a solid first game; but there are better entries in my opinion
My first Ys was the Turbografx version of 1 & 2. It was...interesting, and took a while to wrap my head around the pacing. I never really got used to how quickly you gain power when you level; I eventually got stonewalled by the two faces boss in the tower in the first game, so I left to grind for what I thought was a reasonable amount of time... and proceeded to dog walk them so hard I was caught entirely by surprise when I won the fight after about 10-15 seconds. Wish I knew that for the bat guy earlier... I also didn't find the final boss of that one particularly difficult, is it harder in the Chronicles version? I've played a couple more since, the TG16 version of III and SFC version of IV, and I hope to do play V and Dawn of Ys once I finally finish Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, leaving me free to finally enter the 21st century of Ys games. Wish me luck!
Had seen Ark of Napishtim but only really got into the series through Happyconsolegamer back in 08/09. I'm in pal regions too so we basically had the first one on the master system then nothing until the PS2 😂
I got introduced to Ys through rhythm games. I kept running into its many songs which got mapped out extensively in various Stepmania song packs I randomly downloaded. At some point I just thought "that's it; I'm looking this up". They have started to struggle with the pacing in the last three games. I hope they pack in more game and less visual novel again going forward.
I have already played almost all of these games. I tried to start with Ys 1 but my setup then disconnected my controler. So then I played Ys 8. And then I played Ys 1 and 2. I am only missing 7 and 9 right now. I sadly didn't manage to beat Napishtim, but my controler setup also wasn't ideal for that game. Maybe I get to finish Napishtim if they do another Remaster. Recently beat Trails to Azure for the second time. Actually just yesterday. Now I am off to play Harvestella and then maybe beat legends Arceus. I can not wait to play Ys X. I did preorder the Limited edition actually. I also played mostly in Chronological order. And yes, I played Origin before Celcea. Was perfectly doable. But I am also not a modern gamer who needs everything up to modern standards. My favorite game is Tales of the Abyss, which is 20 years old by now. Also, your volume is a bit too low. The sub click is louder than your voice and that is just not good, because I can barely hear you and I would really like to hear you.
For me Ys 8 was a game I tried to play twice, failed. And then went back and played the games in release order, when I eventually got to 8 again I was hooked on the series. Now that I'm caught up on both big Falcom Series my backlog have to be dealt with I guess xD
Started from naphistim psp, then played the pc fan translation, then felgahna psp and pc fan translation, then 1and 2 ,played origin pc fan translation and xanadu next fan translation, then 7,celceta vita, 8, then 9.
I actually started with Ys Seven. I thought it was pretty good but it didn’t make me go back and play the rest of the games, the story was meh with the whole “go to these generic elemental regions and get the macguffins rinse repeat then go fight some dragons” felt uninspired. But it’s got one of the best soundtracks of the series. Ys Oath in Felghana which I played a few years later is where I truly became a diehard fan.
I bought Ys 8 but my lecturer that really like Ys series tell me to start with Origins, 1+2, after that any order will be fine. He tell me that these three games connected with each other, after i play it i kinda get it what he meant. But play any order is fine except if you play Ys 1 immediately play Ys 2.
If we're talking about all the updated Ys games that have been released in the west, not a single one of them is bad. Some better than others, yes, but they're all at least great. I started with Ys 8 and was really only a little disappointed with some of the lower ranked games. It really is one of the few series where I say go play them all (at least the newer versions).
Oh no none of them are bad, and realistically you can start with any game in the series other than Ys 2, but some might be easier to get into than others
@@Shinky Exactly. It is one single memorable word, and I was always attracted to the unordinary. ...On the flipside though, I find Adol's design incredibly bland, so having him as the protag for every single game kinda deters me.
Ys VIII is stil my favorite out of all the Ys games that i played the only flaw that i can see on Ys VIII is probably the raid battles it was ok at the start but a bother in the later parts
it should be mentioned that there are Ys 1+2 games with the option to not use bump battling, and i feel chronicles should have the option to change that given older ones do. of all content bump battle is my least favorite thing in these games so i completed these on DS (legacy of Ys for DS uses button mashing) None of the Ys games are hard, Ys has a leveling system that has low tolerances and exponential growth. if your getting your butt handed to you, its because your underleveled, all the games have a narrow level spread and just 1 or 2 levels below current content is going to have you running all over trying not to die and likewise 1 or 2 levels over will have everything trivial. i started Ys on Snes and Ys 3 for snes is not a bad game, it was just different and thats always met with complaints from people who dont like change. The game was changed to try and follow the trends at the time so it became a sudo RPG platformer which all the current games technically are too. Zelda did the same thing. when played for what it is, the game has a killer soundtrack and i enjoyed the gameplay. i never got into Ys because the other games werent the same as ys 3. when felghana came out i was excited for a remake cause i liked the original, and thats when i fully got into Ys, especially the redone soundtrack which is one of the best of any game let alone across all media. i went out and bought all the other games up as a result. my fav game is 8, its one of my top 5 all time gratest games ever made and i agree it shouldnt be a starting point, just because everything else will feel a bit lack luster in comparison even though the fast pased action really makes the game fun to play, i especially like doing new game plus runs
Wow, I love celceta, and I completely disagree with your character usefulness summary as someone playing through on nightmare with nearly everyone's skills maxed out, duren is fine, he's no dogi, but he's a fine fighter. Either way, great vid! Personal order would be ys 1+2, origin, celceta, felghana, just skip kefin lol (wait for remake or read plot summary if ya must), then play the rest in release order. Gets you the most mileage out of 6 and sevens plot. I would not recommend origin before 1+2 because reverting to the bump system may be a bit of a gameplay shock for some people. Even if it takes place first, the story impact upon playing origin is just not there if you don't have the context of ys 1 and 2.
ys planning to put my gameplay on youtube i did not put it on because back then i played on psp now its on pc i have a i3 laptop i will try ys 1 to 7 and origin.
Your best bet would probably be Ys 1 and 2 chronicles on PC or PSP. However don’t crank up the frame rate if you play on PC. The higher the framerate the harder the final boss. Though if you can play the original go for it, it’s a totally different experience
Fair but pc engine isn’t exactly the most accessible in 2024, where the PC port requires incredibly low specs and can be run by the most potato of PCs. I love the charm of the PC engine port though
Advice from someone who has actually played both versions: ys books 1 and 2 on the turbografx is the best version of the game, and an excelent place to start! 100% start there, if that's what interests you. others claiming that it isn't "accessible" is silly. you can Google "play ys books 1 and 2 browser" and be playing in 5 seconds for free. lmao
I aint gonna lie, i'd not start with ys6 cause i easily got lost on that game. I know it's my pea brain working but dang, even today i havent finished the game cause i get lost so much lol.
Well that’s because I was talking about the canon, latest releases. Dawn of Ys was replaced by Memories of Celceta. Meanwhile, Ys V still hasn’t had a remake at this point.
@JEANS__ No that’s not it at all, I just stated at the beginning that I was focusing on the latest release of each game in the series. If I focused on every release of every game this video would have been over 2 hours long ah ha!
@@Shinky but why focus on the latest if they have better 'versions'. It's bad advice. Just the best versions should be mentioned if anything that's the better logic. But they're almost entirely different games anyways besides a few similarities. Memories is even based off of SNES ys IV not PCE Ys IV. Which even back then I would describe as different games to eachother. Whereas say every version of Ys I and II are extremely similar so it's more logical then. But in truth best version shouldn't even matter. Like easily Ys III: Wanderers from Ys is still worth mentioning in a video like this before Ys V of all games.
*ba dum tss* They’re generally pretty easy, depending on the game you play. However, if you do find them easy most games have different difficulty settings =)
A few things, Your sentences are structured in way that makes sense when read but not when heard. At 9:50 you say the original Ys 3 was so bad that it almost killed Ys in the west. The first time I heard it I though you said Ys Oath killed Ys in the west. A small nitpick but uk. (a 2/5 for Oath and 7 is an absolute travesty) Ys 7 is absolutely not harder that Oath. Oath is seriously a lot harder than 7. Perfect block trivializes Ys 7. Who is putting Ys 7 at the bottom over Ys 5???? and below Celceta? Who are these people??? Where are these people? I agree with most things about celceta besides the overtuned part. I don't recall anyone in perticular being overtuned. It felt like everyone was extremely overpowered. I disagree with the rating for Ys 9 but agree on the critics. Overwise a good video.
That click click ding is way too damn loud and sent me into sensory overload. Why does RUclipsrs put these sound effects in their videos? It's mind-numbing and actually kinda makes me unnaturally angry at this point. No shade on the video itself, but please, ditch those sound effects. Trust me, that stuff doesn't get subs or likes or anything; people will sub when they want and like when they want and the only thing in your videos that can affect that is the content. Sorry if I sound abrupt but my head is still ringing.
@@Shinkyidm the ding but holy shit was that ding fucking loud. Woulf recommend checkinf sound on them more carefully because that first ding i heard actuallt jumo scared me.
Nah, you wanna start _Ys?_ Go in the REAL order, the games from Youngest Adol to Oldest Adol: Age -700 - _Ys_ Origin Age 17 - _Ys_ Book I & II, _Ys_ X Age 18 - _Ys_ IV (Mask of the Sun, The Dawn of _Ys,_ Memories of Celceta) Age 19 - _Ys_ III (Wanderers from _Ys,_ Oath in Felghana) Age 20 - _Ys_ V Age 21 - _Ys_ VIII Age 23 - _Ys_ VI, _Ys_ VII Age 24 - _Ys_ IX
Definitely an option, but some games in that order might be harder to get into. Chronological order isn’t necessarily the best option. Especially going from Origins fast paced to the slower bump system could be rough That’s why near the end of the video I put the chronological order at the end =)
I started with lacrimosa of Dana, and fell in love with it

It really is one of the few series where I say go play them all (at least the newer versions).
Oh no none of them are bad, and realistically you can start with any game in the series other than Ys 2, but some might be easier to get into than others
Call me shallow, but what call out to me about this series... is its name. I just like the name "Ys".
I mean fair, it is kinda out of the ordinary
@@Shinky Exactly. It is one single memorable word, and I was always attracted to the unordinary.
...On the flipside though, I find Adol's design incredibly bland, so having him as the protag for every single game kinda deters me.
Ys VIII is stil my favorite out of all the Ys games that i played the only flaw that i can see on Ys VIII is probably the raid battles it was ok at the start but a bother in the later parts
Understandable Ys 8 is probably one of the best in the series. I’m not a fan of raid battles in any of the later games, so I get that
it should be mentioned that there are Ys 1+2 games with the option to not use bump battling, and i feel chronicles should have the option to change that given older ones do. of all content bump battle is my least favorite thing in these games so i completed these on DS (legacy of Ys for DS uses button mashing)
None of the Ys games are hard, Ys has a leveling system that has low tolerances and exponential growth. if your getting your butt handed to you, its because your underleveled, all the games have a narrow level spread and just 1 or 2 levels below current content is going to have you running all over trying not to die and likewise 1 or 2 levels over will have everything trivial.
i started Ys on Snes and Ys 3 for snes is not a bad game, it was just different and thats always met with complaints from people who dont like change.
Fair enough. I just want more Ys games with Dogi!
8, saved you some time, you welcome
Definitely a good starting point
ys planning to put my gameplay on youtube i did not put it on because back then i played on psp now its on pc i have a i3 laptop i will try ys 1 to 7 and origin.
So I have a PC engine/turbo graphic 16 mini. Would you recommend starting with the ys1&2 on that console?
Your best bet would probably be Ys 1 and 2 chronicles on PC or PSP. However don’t crank up the frame rate if you play on PC. The higher the framerate the harder the final boss. Though if you can play the original go for it, it’s a totally different experience
I prefer the pc engine version over the chronicles version. More doesn’t always mean better.
Fair but pc engine isn’t exactly the most accessible in 2024, where the PC port requires incredibly low specs and can be run by the most potato of PCs.
I love the charm of the PC engine port though
@@Shinky He literally said he had a pc engine mini so his accessibility is pretty high right now….
Ys X has a demo and is very long so maybe try that instead?
Ys 8 is by far the best game in the franchise.
Oh I’ve played them all, including Ys X. This is more a guide for people that are interested in starting the series
Where's Ys IV Dawn of Ys? That's one of the best Ys games.
Like you inlcude ys V in this video but not Dawn of Ys??
Well that’s because I was talking about the canon, latest releases. Dawn of Ys was replaced by Memories of Celceta. Meanwhile, Ys V still hasn’t had a remake at this point.
@@Shinky so you recommend bad games over good ones just because they're 'canon'?😭
When everyone plays Ys for the gameplay anyways?
Are these games incredibly difficult or are they Ysy?
*ba dum tss*
They’re generally pretty easy, depending on the game you play. However, if you do find them easy most games have different difficulty settings =)
Easy Go play ys 8
A few things,
Your sentences are structured in way that makes sense when read but not when heard. At 9:50 you say the original Ys 3 was so bad that it almost killed Ys in the west. The first time I heard it I though you said Ys Oath killed Ys in the west. A small nitpick but uk. (a 2/5 for Oath and 7 is an absolute travesty)
Ys 7 is absolutely not harder that Oath.
Sorry about that. I’ll keep it in mind
@@Shinkyidm the ding but holy shit was that ding fucking loud. Woulf recommend checkinf sound on them more carefully because that first ding i heard actuallt jumo scared me.
The obvious jumping off point is clearly Y’s V.
I mean, get the worst out of the way first right?
@@Shinkyoh so play Oath in Felghana first? 😂
@Kasmar_Gaming you totally could but the difficulty can be a bit up there
Nah, you wanna start _Ys?_ Go in the REAL order, the games from Youngest Adol to Oldest Adol:
Age -700 - _Ys_ Origin
Age 17 - _Ys_ Book I & II, _Ys_ X
Age 18 - _Ys_ IV (Mask of the Sun, The Dawn of _Ys,_ Memories of Celceta)
Age 19 - _Ys_ III (Wanderers from _Ys,_ Oath in Felghana)
Age 20 - _Ys_ V
Age 21 - _Ys_ VIII
Age 23 - _Ys_ VI, _Ys_ VII
Age 24 - _Ys_ IX
Definitely an option, but some games in that order might be harder to get into. Chronological order isn’t necessarily the best option. Especially going from Origins fast paced to the slower bump system could be rough
That’s why near the end of the video I put the chronological order at the end =)
I'd love to see a Kefin remake in a modernized Napishtim engine.
VI was my first, and remains my favorite adventure in the series.
It’s super good! I’m actually playing through it again!
