@@Shinky while I do love the story and the combat is solid, the rather antiquated design of its routes/and endings even if with the remaster not having the strongest QOL features, makes it a more tedious experience and the side quests disappointed even after coming from Automata

Oh I haven’t played Nier automata yet, so maybe that’s why I enjoyed replicant

I never played Tales of Zestiria but it was my introduction to the Tales of series and I watched playthrough of it and ended up enjoying the story which got me to start following the Tales of series until I bought my first Tales of of game (Berseria).
Like you, I was surprised and disappointed that they build up Alisha only to sideline her and get replace by Rose who I really like as a character but at least they brought her back in a DLC story.
Blue Reflection was OK, I like the story but it became repetitive and boring after a few hours. For example, after completing a section/chapter, you get a rest day to bond with characters and do side quest and what killed my motivation for this game for how repetitive this occurred. I ended up dropping the game but eventually came back and replayed it until the ending. This is also the reason why I haven’t finished Blue Reflection Second Light.

I don't have any RPG regrets because RPGs aren't a genre that I buy games without looking at reviews first. In fact, I don't buy games on day one, I don't pre-order games, and I don't buy anything that I'm not absolutely sure I'll enjoy. Since RPGs tend to be longer games, I definitely don't jump into them blindly, even in well established series that I enjoy. I just don't have the money to waste on a game that I won't play and I don't have the time to push through a game that I'm not enjoying.
Of the games on this list, I would probably give Ni Ni Kuni 2 and Tales of Zestiria a try. Maybe I can pick them up at a good price sometime in the future.

Valkyrie Profile is still pretty unique with its combo system. The only other game to even attempt it, that I can think of, is Indivisible. Barring that, I guess Xenogears and Legend of Dragoon had earlier input styles, but not with simultaneous party member attacks being a huge component of the combat. VP2 was a little sloppy with it, but it also added a monster break system for materials (iirc). Couldn't get into Covenant of the Plume being ungodly difficult.
Valkyrie Elysium was disappointing just from the trailers. It looked a bit generic, and like it lost some of the core ideas of VP. Despite the awesome combat, VP also had a great story, and VP2's was still good/decent. I've been dying for a Hrist-focused game after VP2, but given where the story went it was unlikely to begin with. (I did hear rumors way back some time after VP2 that a Hrist-focused one was in development at one point, but... only unsubstantiated rumors).

I love the way you break down JRPGs. Much more sophisticated than me hahaha. Zestiria is actually one of my favorite games ever, but that's MOSTLY just because of Sorey. It wanted me to care WAY more about the Normins, the Lords of the Land, shop levels, and the whole skill system than I was willing to. Despite how much I love it, I still can't bring myself to defend the game as a whole simply because of those incredibly unintuitive mechanics.
Very hard agree about Valkyrie Elysium, though. I didn't HATE it, but I got to the third region before finally realizing that the combat wasn't going to get ANY better. It controlled like a Musou game that wanted to cosplay as Devil May Cry.

I wanted to like Valkyrie Elysium myself, but I couldn't even beat the demo for it. There was a certain jump during the tutorial that I couldn't make for the life of me, and was convinced that I needed the wind to get across. Then I ran out of mana, and could not figure out how to regenerate it. I tried a few more times to jump that gap, but no luck. So I essentially soft-locked in the demo, and to me, that's a cardinal sin. Uninstalled, and haven't gone back to try again. Maybe I'm wrong, and just didn't have the technique right to get across, but no thanks. Don't want to go back to try again.

    • @Shinky

I have to agree with Tales of Zestria and Valkyrie Elysium. I dropped Zestria like in a few hours, strange because I love the Tales series, it was just so boring......currently am playing Tales of Legendia which is amazing, old school basic combat but story wise, character building wise. Top tier, now I also just beat Valkyrie profile 2 Silmeria and man why did I take this long to play it! 10/10 Great story, gameplay, music, theme, ect I was hooked and when I played Elysium I was going to sleep in a matter of minutes with how boring it was. I am absolutely the opposite of everyone in that I love Ni No Kuni 2 - I think I am the world's biggest fan of it actually - and I HATE the first one. it is really weird to say such a beautiful game is probably my least favorite game ever, but, well, there you have it. the gameplay in the second one, on the other hand, is super fun and enjoyable! I'll definitely admit to the combat not reinventing the wheel at all but it's very fun and fluid. I am VERY glad they "reinvented the wheel" as the first game just SUCKED in any actual game play. also I dunno, no offense meant but if you are put off by the random grunts instead of full words in VA I don't know how you've stuck with JRPGs this long lol

I don't regret buying Zestiria because it gave me a lot of stuff to think about when making stories, and given I`m working to publish my own, it was a valuable investment.
But it's sad that I have to use a Tales of game as an example of how not to write a story when all other Tales of titles I played were great in that regard.
Alisha did not deserve anything that happened to her! Sorey and his friends are all hypocrites who would rather watch from the sidelines as their supposed friend is in need of help and moral support and then trash talk her behind her back instead of helping her clean the corruption in the government (which would prove beneficial for Sorey's mission of being essentially Jesus) and save lives!
Rose was only able to become Sorey's partner because she had been possessed various times, which increased her sixth sense, proving that Alisha, who already had a strong sixth sense at the beginning of the game despite not having any connection to spirits, could have been trained to increase her powers and not be a burden on Sorey! Yet, nobody even entertains the idea of helping Alisha improve!
And in the end, what was Alisha's happy ending? Become a corrupt politician!
The knight princess that kickstarted the whole story by braving alone into unknown lands in search of the spirits to save her land, presenting Sorey and Mikleo with the opportunity to venture into the outside world and eventually become the Shepperd to cleanse the land of evil, the princess that alone decided to investigate the political corruption and successfully discovered shady trades happening between two warring countries to maintain their economies thus proving the whole ordeal was just a distraction for the population of the two sides to not pay attention to their rules, the princess that despite being overwhelmed by grief and despair of having her mother figure be revealed as an evil manipulator that merely raised her to be righteous and courageous just so she could beat her down and corrupt her morals when the time was right, THE GODDAMN Alisha who fought for justice until the very end despite her limitations and the entire world telling her to give up...
...and you are telling me her happy ending is to become a corrupt politician!?
    Zestiria is a terrible story!

I know it's not a popular opinion, but I absolutely loved Valkyrie Elysium. Got it on release day, and even sprang for the steelbook edition from Best Buy, and don't regret the purchase in the least. Maybe it's because I didn't have any expectations going in, never having played any of the original titles, but I had a great time with it, and plan on replaying it again at some point.
My big disappointment, at least recently, was Baldur's Gate 3. Bought it a few days after it launched on the PS5 due to all the hype and found I just wasn't enjoying myself. Played it about 6 to 8 hours and stopped. While I can see all the love and care that went into the game, it just wasn't for me, and I regret paying full price for a digital game which I'm now stuck with and can't do anything to help recoup my investment (which is another reason I stick primarily to physical games).

I beat Zestiria a few years ago and the biggest issue for me was... nothing about it was memorable. I can't remember what the story was about. I hardly remember the characters, and what little I do remember about them is very vague. And there isn't a single town, city or dungeon that I can remember being particularly interesting or fun to explore. The game was just... boring. I think I only finished it because I'd gotten it as a gift. Or something. =/

Ni No Kuni 2 hurt my soul. The combat is garbage, especially compared to how fun and unique the first game was, it was so disappointing. It felt like such a massive downgrade in every way. I really tried to like it, I've tried to go back and finish it but I lose interest so quickly. The second series like that go hack and slash, I just roll my eyes because that usually means it's a budget cash grab trying to milk the remaining fans because they don't want to invest in actually making a proper sequel.

Good video but I wanna disagree about something regarding the late game of Zestiria.
In no point of the story you're forced to fuse or vice versa. Both playstyle preferences are doable on any difficulty. If anything I believe Zestiria for it's time had the best battle system in the Tales Series.
I don't think many people understand that switching characters is a great gimmick halfway into the battle to abuse element weakness, move move versatility, more combo chaining etc. It has way more in-depth detail and it expands in the Berseria game afterwards. Overall I strongly agree with the skill/equipment system which is literally the worst part of the game. unnecessarily confusing and random . I guess they wanted to try something but it didn't work out.
Overall I like your list and the points you're making. I don't have many JRPGs I regret buying but here's two of them :
DBZ Kakarot and Fairy Tail. I have never refunded any games in my life but both of these didn't even take me 30 minutes to do so . Absolutely horrendous

    • @Shinky

I got Ni no Kuni 2 at launch and I actually love it!
got way much better with the patch to include expert difficulty.
it's my second favorite ps4 game to date so far.
I do agreed the first game was more memorable and better but I sunk around 160 hour playing the second game thanks to the far away forest dreamer maze which I got addicted to exploring it at the highest difficulty possible.
I only put around 120 hour in the first game and I did platinum both Ni no Kuni 1 on the ps3 and 2 on the ps4.
I hated that the third game ended up being an MMO and released only on mobile devices.

#3 Puts off a lot of players because it throws a random ass stealth section right in the middle of the escape sequence with no visible way to tell if you're going to get detected or not, also the combat is way too easy for a Bandai Namco game, seriously the most annoying parts of that game are the forced army segments and the forced castle improvement segments, like that breaks the entire flow of the game right there.
I played and finished the game, found it way too easy even the final boss was a joke, Bandai Namco needs to learn to make a Ni No Kuni game that doesn't cut corners, have forced garbage segments and maybe doesn't break the flow of the game?
#2 On the list is a 1 and done for most players, it has very few challenges to it, like the hardest boss is in chapter 7, the game's leveling is done via the quests, the lack of difficult combat and once you get access to the game's ultimate mechanic, you can face roll bosses no joke I did a entire run of the game to show how easy it is.

To me everything about Zestiria is bad. The characters are bad, the story is bad, the combat is extremely boring (as you said, fusing is basically mandatory and even then you dont even do good damage with it) i remember struggling a shit ton toward the end of the game and having to do boring xp grind with boring af combat, that was legitimy painful. Story had a good buildup at first and then falls apart extremely fast, i was just interested in finishing the story as fast as possible after that.
