I learned of Ys in 2022 through you! Over the past two years, I’ve played almost every title: Origins, Napishtim, Felghana, Celceta, 1&2, Dana, and Nox. Currently working on Ys Seven. Can’t wait to pick Nordics up!
Ys Seven is the first of the series that i first time i got my hand on and love it, then i trace backward and play from Felghana to Ys Wanderer series. Then when Ys Celceta then 8 (Dana) out i freak out happy, the gameplay and quality are extremely good, big boost from previous Ys Seven.
Ys seven was my first and i love that...I haven't played all ys games but ys 7 is one of the best imo, that game has the second best soundtrack, after ys 8
Johnny. You are on fire this week. Im used to waiting until Sunday for you videos. Im 62 but i cant think of any other channell that they people are close to my age. Game on brother 😊
I just recently got back into Eiyuden Chronicles Hundred Heroes, so I gotta agree with you. I feel stupid for giving up on this game so quickly back when it first released. I still need to finish Trails into Daybreak, too, especially since Daybreak 2 comes out in January I think. Lastly, I never finished Visions of Mana and I don’t know if I ever will.
Trails Through Daybreak, FFVII Rebirth, Unicorn Overlord and now this and Metaphor?? Plus many others I'm likely missing. We were truly spoiled this year.
Here from Game Sack and Joe’s review. Can’t wait to play this game as I’m downloading the demo as I type. Also looking forward to seeing more of your content.
Man, on the graphics topic. I actually wish more developers would scale back graphically to ensure clean looking images at 60 fps. So many games right now (looking at you FF 16) come out looking beautiful in screenshots but without even a smooth 30 fps. So I love the trails and YS stuff being scaled back if it means I can more reliably run the games at a locked 60 or above.
I'm also tired of hearing about games like Final Fantasy VII that sell 5 million copies and are considered a disappointment in sales, maybe calm down a little on those budgets lol
@@Pimpjira87 As much as I loved Rebirth, I have to agree. In fairness though, I think the conversation surrounding it being a sales disappointment says more about Square's inability to effectively estimate upcoming sales of their titles than it does about the sales themselves. If they had gone multiplatform from the beginning with day and date PC and Xbox releases, it would've naturally done better. But they keep going with console exclusives for titles that only appeal to RPG fans and expecting the audience to magically explode like it did for Elden Ring.
It's nice to see reviews and not just collect em all video's like other gaming channels, you know Johnny actually plays and love's the games he buys, a true gamer.
I haven't played any Ys games before but I'm glad JRPGs are still getting the attention they need. Especially in the last couple of years. Great video!
8:14 love this quality of life update. No more leaving town, doing the smallest task, & having to retalk to every single person in town to find out what's new. I can't remember if Nox or Lacrimosa had this feature, but there are plenty of games without it. I appreciate it.
i was same and eventually gave in and played 8. I didn't like it the first time. But one bored winter day i tried it again cos had nothing else and ended up being hooked on it massively.
Like the other said start with YS VIII. It has an old school linear adventure vibe with some freedom in each chapter. The story is what drives you to see the true ending. If you're human, you'll shear tears at the main story. P.S. If YS ever became an open sandbox world like Zelda did I'll probably never finish it as I forget why I want to see the ending. When gameplay overstays they welcome and the story doesn't drive you, you change game.
I'm very hyped for Ys X, I preordered the collectors edition. Ys my favorite running video game franchise right now, I'm glad Falcom has shook things up with the battle system as well as the exploration. I'll know illp drop whatever I'm playing the moment I have this game in my possession, even though there are some great games that are out around the same time like FF anniversary collection, Metaphor, Romancing SaGa 2. Just a great time to be a fan of JRPG'S.
Thanks to you Johnny I have tried Lacrimosa of Dana, and simply loved it! Then grabbed and completed both Memories of Celceta and Monstrum Nox, and then when I went to Japan last year bought Nordics collector's edition... have been waiting for a year to finally get ENG version, and it's almost there! Definitely getting it.
You introduced me to ys in 2018 it’s how I found the channel and here I am immediately clicking on your new ys video in 2024 lol hope to play it looks great!
I played Ys 8 first. Then Memories of Celceta. Recently finished Ys 9. I saw a lot of negativity around Ys 9, but I genuinely loved the game. I went through twice in a row to get the platinum. So, yeah, I guess I'm a fan of the modern Ys games. Had my X pre-order in for a while now and I'm working my way through Visions of Mana before I jump back into Ys. I hope to work my way back through some of the older games someday.
Been waiting for this one a long time Johnny. I started the series with Celceta. Then when YS 8 was announced for a switch release. I went back and played the rest of the series. Loved all of them. Made 8 that much better. 9 was different, but I still enjoyed it a lot. I liked how it was the first time in the series that everyone, including the gods. All acknowledged what a strange enigma Adol is. That he just happens upon all these world ending situations and has saved it multiple times. That aside, can’t wait to play 10.
I am picking up the big collectors edition for the PS five and I’m also picking up the deluxe edition for the Nintendo switch. I am a big huge fan of the Ys series and always will be. Can’t wait to get this.
The attention to detail in the B-Roll and sound bites are absolutely insane in this video Johnny. Always a hallmark of the channel but you’ve outdone yourself, this must have taken over Y’s X hours to edit
I'm behind on the Ys series but I just got a PS5. I'll try to get my hands on this game asap! Too bad on my region this title is very pricey and I'm afraid we may run out of copies... At least I still have VIII and IX to finish. Oh, and I think it is proper to say, you were the one that put this series on my radar wayyyy back in the days!
Oh man I am sooo jealous! I'm getting the Switch version, ordered it online so won't get it until Nov 4th according to the site. Btw I read something Falcom have said in an interview, they actually designed this game with the Switch in mind, so some things such as graphics were made simpler so it could more easily be on the Switch. Also they took care of having it running on the Switch themself rather than have another company port it like they did with Monstrum Nox. Anyway, awesome to see this review! And really happy to hear it's more like Lacrimosa of Dana rather than Monstrum Nox.
So stoked on it finally coming to the West! Got the CE preordered. Hate this month is soooo stacked tho lol. I pray Ys V Remake is after this. Also people should know while you can play Ys games without playing earlier ones. You most definitely can with this one bc it takes place super early in Adol’s adventures vs Ys IX which was when he was the oldest
Love this channel. Thank you for introducing me to the Ys series. Played Ys VIII, IX, and X since watching your videos and it's become one of my most favorite series
I'm really happy to finally have another new Ys game to play! It's literally the only game series that I double dip on purchases (physical on PS5 and digital on PC) at launch (and one of the few I'll buy at launch anyways) because I want this series to be as successful as possible. I've played every available game you can get via PC and I'm definitely enjoying Ys X as well! I probably liked IX more than most but I like that they implemented more variety in traversal throughout the game. And between the hype from you and GameSack, I'm definitely an Ys fanatic as well. In short, loving it and hoping there are many more Ys games to come!
Awesome review! I started playing Ys 1&2 on PC Engine CD-ROM and was completely hooked by the incredible intro and cutting-edge CD audio (back in the days). I'll definitely be getting this game!
If i'm not mistaken, I think I left a similar comment before but here we go again: Your REALLY old videos showcasing your Ys collection convinced me to give the franchise a try and fast-forward to 2024 I'm now a big fan of Falcom and in particular Ys VIII is one of my favorite games ever. I'm really looking forward to Ys X on STEAM; sadly I have to wait for a price drop 'cause the regional prices are insane where I live. I hope down the line you consider making a new, updated and higher res video showcasing your collection up until this point (and that includes merch like that awesome t-shirt) and if we're lucky that will of course create new fans down the line.
I'm at this weird point for buying Switch games where I'm afraid games like this will get a rerelease for the new Switch console...but I also don't want to risk it not coming out on Switch 2 and missing a physical print of this one
i think the switch 2 will use the same carts. it will just run better. you can always sell the physical copy anyway and switch games hold their value. ( unfortunately in some cases)
You will be fine. There is a 90% chance the Switch games will work on the next console. And I'd bet the games will fun better as well. Ys X runs at 30 fps most of the time.
I came into this series thanks to Johnny. I started with the first one and went all the way through the series in order. I still think current Ys deserves better, but I do understand they are on a budget. But yea, the music needs to be explosive and hearing average tracks just doesn't cut it for me either. And the thing about it too is these games never have a good sale on Steam, which is understandable. I just can't justify paying a high price tag for these (I also haven't played Ys IX yet either, too expensive), I stopped after 8. My heart will always belong to the older Ys titles (minus Ys V lol), but I still would like to just try these someday, but give me AT LEAST 50% off first.
Johnny, you really should be talkin' about the Legend of Heroes: Trails games. These games are some of the best JRPGs I've ever played with some of the best storytelling and world-building that is damn near Xenogears caliber at times even. Trails of Cold Steel 1 to 4 are especially Xenogears esque even.
I pre-orderd the limited edition with the plush and I also have three weeks of vacation starting when it comes out. I'm definitely will get it and I'm looking forward to play it.
@@SuperVegeta25Returns I don't know about the America store but the EU store has a Bundle with the limited Edition and Plushs for the main character. The NISA EU store also had that for Trails trough Daybreak and Trails into Reverie.
Great video man! I started playing Ys on VIII. Now I've played IX and waiting for X to come out. In the meantime, I've been playing LoHTo Cold Steel series (currently on number 2).
Would not have learned about the Y's series had it not been for Johnny. While I still haven't played one (that'll change today with the Y's X demo), I have heard the soundtracks of Y's Book I & II, Y's III, and Y's IV, and they are IMO some of THE greatest game soundtracks of all time. Go listen to them if you haven't yet.
I miss the old Sound Team JDK. These days it feels way more violin intensive, rather that electric guitar rock. I did love roaming the sea in Wind Waker, that game made you feel like you were going fast which was nice. So I may enjoy it in this one.
Yes, I will be buying. I've played Ys 1 and 2, Ys3, on TurboDuo and a translated Ys IV on emulation. I've played 8, 9, and Memories of Celceta. Hopefully this game isn't overlooked by the recent release of Metaphor.
My friend introduced me to Ys, specifically Ys VIII, and your video on it sold me on it! So you, along with my friend, have made an Ys fan out of me! So to say I am excited about Ys X is an understatement! Super stoked!
I started playing through the series last year (just need to finish 1, 2, and Origins), and I've had a blast (my timing skills aren't stellar on the classic ones, but the modern/remakes control great). Your videos really helped me find the best versions to play through. Thanks, and I can't wait for the 25th!
I absolutely loved this game started on hard but it was easy. I'm gonna go through it on nightmare again. You are 100% right about the anime intros I freaking love them. Those intros are integral to the identity of Ys.
I am playing the switch demo, never really played a jrpg like this but I've heard radical Reggie talk about ys viii a tonne. Cant believe how much content is in the switch demo. I keep expecting it to end but ive put in multiple hours and the game has introduced a tonne of mechanics in just the demo! I keep picking up the game and smiling so im definitely hoping for even a small sale this holiday to pick it up. Small things like the game showing a trail on the minimap make this game very "suspend" friendly cause i can remember which direction i was exploring when resuming.
Have had my pre-order for awhile now. I need to wrap up Ys 9 before I start this one, but overall I'm new to the Ys series and appreciate how simple it is. The games don't end up shattering the genre or anything but gameplay and story is always solid.
Yes! I have been waiting for this review! I've been an Ys fan since the 90's and one day I decided to look around here on RUclips for Ys reviews and like all of the top ones at the time were your videos. I've been a fan ever since. Keep up the good work. Also, where's the remake of Ys 5 already!?
amazing review, I started on the ys series this year with 8 and fell in love with the series. I've finished celceta and now on Nox and am very tempted with Nordic.
you know he loves the series when he does TWO reviews... by the way John, thank you for getting me into ys i randomly selected your ys 8 review and fell in love. played the ps vita version and never looked back! then i went to ys origin and struggled a little bit but enjoyed it none the less and YS 10 IS PREORDERED FOR SWITCHHH LETS GOOOO
Am I hyped? Absolutely! As soon as the demo dropped, my night had no end anymore, and after finishing it, I needed to play more "Ys", so I finished "The Ark of Napishtim" for the first time in one swoop. "Ys VIII" and "Ys IX" are the only ones I've completed so far, and I'm planning to beat "Celceta" before the release and maybe get "Ys Seven". I just loved the whole team-attack stuff. Not only the attacks you pull off, but also the little scenes after perfect-blocking a boss. It's always amazing to have a team (no matter how small or big) and they working together to this extent.
I’m looking through my nostalgia glasses but the first 3 installments in the YS series will always be my favorite. Mainly because of the music within those games. Anyway, I need to give this one a try when it comes out.
Day one. Bought the soundtrack several months ago and loved it! Especially all the more sea shanty and Celtic sounding stuff, besides all the prog rock.
While you can just pick up the game without playing previous entries, there are always references to their prior adventures that can go over your head if you haven't played said previous games
You introduced me to YS with YS 8. While it isnt one of my favorite franchises ever, im definitely a fan for life. Watching your YS content also lead me in the direction of finding the kiseki nut here on youtube which got me into the trails games as well so im pretty much a falcom fan in general now 😂
Thanks for the info on this game. This was the first Ys game I didn’t pre order because I didn’t care for Ys 9 but I think this has alleviated my fears. These environments are much more up my alley than the city environments of Monstrum Nox. Very cool, will definitely be getting it now.
Ive had mine reserved from day one! Been paying on it since. Cannot wait for this bad boy to be released! Been a fan of this series for decades now. Over 30 years! My favorite series! And yes! I too miss the opening anime scene. And you're saying its missing here too. Bummer!
Question, the colour for the footage looks a little washed out, wondering if you captured it with HDR on as that can come through a bit pale, or is that the natural colour pallet of the game?
IT might be because the game is supposed to be brighter because its daylight most of the time. Could be the setting he has.Looks normal on my TV .Played on PS5.
Great review, I love the editing. I wish I could get more into the 3D anime-aesthetic JRPGs (Ys, Tales, Legend of Heroes, etc), but their worlds just feel so lifeless. I wish they had more fauna out in the overworld and in towns. Just some birds out in the forest or beaches (besides cutscenes), maybe some cats in town, varmints/vermin, etc. I know it's probably outside their budget (I've only ever seen random fauna in Japanese games from big corpo developers like Square, Sega, Capcom, etc), but it'd still be nice.
Johnny this one slipped under my radar! Thank you for the review! I'm Still powering through Visions of Mana and want to NG+ it and see everything it has been loving it!
I believe I am a fan. I love Adol and his adventures. I've only finished 8 and 9, but i have memories of celecta, 7, the ark of napishtim, and the oath of felghana.
I've noticed a play style evolving in JRPGs, hard to explain, but I almost think of it as "fast-forwarding" your adventure, or that our brains are able to handle soooo much interaction that games like FF14, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and also Ys X it seems have this flow state where you're just cruiiiiising through content moving quickly, having so much fun, lots of clicks, etc
I reviewed the PC port of Ys X Nordics. It's exemplary. They did a great job, many Eastern and Western developers could take note. Ultrawide support, proper mouse and keyboard integration, a lot of settings and runs really well too.
Ive only played Origins, the DS ports of 1&2, 8 & 9 and I’m super stoked for 10. Also waiting for the remake of 3 next year and then try to get through the rest of them.
I've been playing it on the Deck oled, and it runs like a gem. As someone who's been a fan of the Ys series from the start, I'd give this one a 10/10. I love it.
Thank you for this great video. I hardly can't wait before this game is coming. I played this serie since Ancient YS Vanished: Omen on my MSX-2. After seeing this video my patience is even worse. Why it can't be the 25th already? 🤭

Trails of Cold Steel 1 to 4 are especially Xenogears esque even.
Thank you for the review Johnny!!! You’re the reason I was introduced to the series years ago starting with 8! I’m playing the demo now and LOVING IT
I pre-orderd the limited edition with the plush and I also have three weeks of vacation starting when it comes out. I'm definitely will get it and I'm looking forward to play it.
I don’t see a plush on Nisamerica’s site for the LE?
@@SuperVegeta25Returns I don't know about the America store but the EU store has a Bundle with the limited Edition and Plushs for the main character. The NISA EU store also had that for Trails trough Daybreak and Trails into Reverie.
Got my pre order for the CE edition on NIS. Really excited.
Can't wait for this game ! I discovered your channel YEARS ago because you were the ONLY ONE to talk about
Ys on RUclips !
My copy should be in tomorrow. Can't wait! Loved ys 9 but missed the exploration of 8. So glad they went that route with X
I've finished celceta and now on Nox and am very tempted with Nordic.
you know he loves the series when he does TWO reviews... by the way John, thank you for getting me into ys i randomly selected your ys 8 review and fell in love. played the ps vita version and never looked back! then i went to ys origin and struggled a little bit but enjoyed it none the less and YS 10 IS PREORDERED FOR SWITCHHH
LETS GOOOO
Am I hyped?
I have SO many games to buy here at the end of the year! I am so incredibly hyped for more Ys! Karja looks badass! Love that armor.
My first YS games and I'm glad I've gave it a chance. Currently on chapter 3.
Ive had mine reserved from day one! Been paying on it since. Cannot wait for this bad boy to be released! Been a fan of this series for decades now. Over 30 years! My favorite series! And yes! I too miss the opening anime scene. And you're saying its missing here too. Bummer!
I'll definitely pick it up and yes your review put it on my radar. Thankfully it comes out very soon so not much longer.
Great review, Johnny! The Ys games always remind me of your channel. Keep up the great content!
yes, ive waited for this game for a year
Ty for your review,I'm buying it in the E shop right now.
Love this, will get Oath in Felghana this coming March.
Can’t wait for my pre-order to come in! Been patiently waiting for this one for waaaay too long!
I'm Still powering through Visions of Mana and want to NG+ it and see everything it has been loving it!
played memories of celceta on a whim and fell in love with the series, been counting the days to the english release of nordics
The review for Ys X I was waiting for! Nice thorough review from the premiere Athorit-Ys!
I have been waiting for this game quite a bit! Been a more recent Ys fan but I am caught up on every Entry old and new!
I loved Y's VIII, haven't played IX yet, I've preordered Y's X and after your review here, I'm hyped!
Back to back HCG vids!!
Johnny - How do you compare to Monstrum Nox? I never started it , trying to pick which one to start with first
After playing, it made me love Ys Series once again...
I played it coop on hard difficulty
Preordered collectors edition can’t wait. Got switch version as handheld is needed for me but so excited
I'm picking it up day one! You converted me into becoming an Ys fanatic. I actually enjoyed 9 the most
Personally I haven't played a single Ys game, but I always watch your Ys videos because of how excited you are when talking about it.
Whats stopping you? Why not pick one up?
I reviewed the PC port of Ys X Nordics. It's exemplary. They did a great job, many Eastern and Western developers could take note. Ultrawide support, proper mouse and keyboard integration, a lot of settings and runs really well too.
Ive only played Origins, the DS ports of 1&2, 8 & 9 and I’m super stoked for 10. Also waiting for the remake of 3 next year and then try to get through the rest of them.
I'm super hyped avoit this release. Rpg lovers are eating good right now.
Great video as always. Will play the demo and probably get the game. Thanks.
