    I finished the PS2 version of the game yesterday, and I can vouch for how vicious the grind can be. I reached the mountain area, realizing I could barely damage anything there at Lv11. I had to kill those monsters that shoot spinning blades for EIGHT STRAIGHT LEVELS to even stand a chance against the normal fodder. (To make matters worse, once I was at Lv19, it was only THEN I figured out how to upgrade my sword. I went back to town, pumped it up a few levels, and became a God among men for the remainder of that dungeon.)

    As a fan since the TG16CD version of books I&II, I imported this one for Windows from Japan. I played all the way through it like 3 times. It's worth pointing out that in this era of PC games, all the western devs were fine targeting lower/unstable framerates but the few Japanese devs working in the PC space were still targeting 60fps. Really elevated this game. My only complaint after playing it multiple times with analog Xbox controllers was how unusual the long-jump input mechanics were.

    You can actually play the PS2 version with the original anime cutscenes and Japanese voice acting. Go to the Cheats menu and you’ll enter a room with a red, blue and yellow crystal. Also, there’s a pedestal in the floor.

    I had random thoughts of this game and finally tracked down what it was. This is the only Ys game I've ever played but I still love it. Of course, as a kid with his first PSP and a growing love for JRPGs and Asian game titles this holds a special place in my heart. I loved the story and game, and felt sad that Adol left behind Olha and Isha. I lived for this game as a kid.

    That reminds me on healing items it's another thing XSEED did a small change. That's what Catastrophe mode is all about. You no longer pick up healing items from enemies instead you use them right away like in Felghana. There is one exception to that if I recall tho. I think there were other changes they made for it like I think stat boosting items were added to one of the shops at the same time. They're expensive but if you do get them they'll make the game a breeze.

    Excellent review! Pretty well matches how I feel about the game. Good start to a series and a good game, though the other two games on the engine definitely made improvements. I think it actually had my favorite setting and maybe story of the three. Biggest peeves are definitely the grind and the dash jumping.
    I actually didn't know you could assign an item to use in boss battles. Probably for the better too, or I would've ended up figuring it was intended.

    • @Aboveup
      @Aboveup  6 лет назад +4

      Yeah, there's an Item slot in your equipment page that lets you place usable items there. Including the healing ones. I guess it would at least be useful for the status effects, but so many of the areas where they inflict those, they inflict more than one type anyway.

    I can only agree with your perspective on the game. I played it for the first time this summer and despite its mechanical weaknesses in comparison to oath and origins (which I've beated before) it was an overall great experience with an exciting story, lovely characters and another great Ys soundtrack. Oh and the intro still makes me shiver.
    Looking forward to your Ys Seven review, which was the last game that I've beated.

  • @Javifaa

    You forgot to talk about how the harder dificulties work in this title.
    If I remember correctly, they randomly assing a color to an enemy and you can only damage enemies whith the correct sword. Its a bit more complex than that, but I haven't touched the game in years, so...

    • @FEZ_gg
      @FEZ_gg 6 лет назад +2

      To add to this, Hard Mode and beyond remove the 0 damage limit on enemies if you are underlevelled. Doesn't quite remedy all of the grinding, but it's something. On Nightmare Mode, you have no invincibility upon getting hit, which mean enemies, and bosses, can combo you. Lastly, the ore requirement for upgrading the weapons to max level increases to pretty absurd quantities on higher difficulties.

    • @xxx_jim_the_reaper_xxx
      @xxx_jim_the_reaper_xxx 4 года назад

      @@FEZ_gg
      The Ore requirement for upgrading equipment is no problem since you can grind at the City of Kishgal with an Emel Mallet equipped in your Accessories.
      And also killing color-coded enemies yield more Emels than black-colored ones.

    • @FEZ_gg
      @FEZ_gg 4 года назад

      Even with that setup, 500K Emelas seems like too much effort for not enough reward. It's great for Majunun, but I'd rather fight it through Boss Rush instead of spending time grinding. Maybe one day for the achievement.
      I also recall the color-coded enemies giving the exact same amount of Emelas throughout the game, which was good for early-game, but detrimental for endgame.

    • @xxx_jim_the_reaper_xxx
      @xxx_jim_the_reaper_xxx 4 года назад

      @@FEZ_gg
      My strategy to get more Emels is to got to a place where the Archis and Varions spawn because they are rewarding to kill but be careful since they attack in groups.
      I just go back and forth to at least accumulate a lot of the things.
      And once I get 999,999 Emels, just go straight to Leav to upgrade then after that, go to Canaan Plains to kill for one emel then you're done!

    1. Ys Origin - Takes place about 700 years before the start of the series
    2. Ys I & II - The start of the series
    Ys I: Ancient Ys Vanished
    Ys II: Ancient Ys Vanished - The Final Chapter
    3. Ys: Memories of Celceta
    Ys IV: Mask of the Sun
    Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys
    4. Ys: The Oath in Felghana
    Ys III: Wanderers from Ys
    5. Ys V: Kefin, The Lost City of Sand
    6. Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
    7. Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim
    8. Ys Seven - Takes place about 6 months after Ys VI as Geis mentioned it's been about half a year since he last saw Adol.

    LOL I also never realized that you can equip healing item to the boss fight. I've always thought you can't do that in the boss battle. And I finished VI, Felghana and Origin without using a single healing items.
    Also, I was very happy seeing this game on PS2 when it came out and bought it without any hesitation. At that time, I didn't know that the version I bought was Konami's port and never realized they replaced that awesome OP with their own crappy CGI. I'm seriously happy that it was ported to PC and now I'm replaying it again.

    I enjoyed your review. While Ys VI is my favourite game in the series the dash jump is a horrible mechanic. I have played the game several times and not once was able to pull off the move once. The music is great although I wish they would have stayed with live instruments like they did in Oath in Felghana, instead of using live instruments there and synths for the other games. I didn't find the grind to bad. The battles didn't punish you for being under leveled. It punished you for having your weapons under leveled.

I died way to many times on hard mode to the necessary optional bee boss as his stinger missile was criting me for 160-190 out of 230hp which seriously changes any math when the hench bees could also crit to change their 30ish base damage. The other one that got me too many times for what it was, was the first boss on hard has a weak tell tracking flame attack that if it hit me once would chain 3 auto hits and you have to pre run side to side other wise it auto hit me; IIRC I was probably just under leveled for that encounter.

    To this day, I still consider VI to have the weakest soundtrack of the series, outside of three tracks: Release of the Far West Ocean, Mighty Obstacle, and Ernst.
    Of all the games released this century, this is the one I simply cannot be arsed to go back to.

      I can understand how you could feel that way. Though I still like Ys V's music a lot less.

      @@Aboveup Quite understandable. I do think the actual composition of V's music is better than most of VI, though. None of the field themes in VI measure up to Field of Gale or Desert Clime.

      I heard that Redbook audio style remix someone on YT made of Fields of Gale and was blown away by how good it was.

      Indeed! I just ran across that one the other day. If you look on my channel, you'll find my favorite mix of Dreaming from Ys I, as well.

    More like yeesh, it took them years to make a new game

      Not really. Ys VI began development no earlier than 2001, and they were only convinced to have another go when the Ys I & II Eternal/Complete remakes turned a decent profit.

    I love seven and VIII, came here to see what VI looks like, it turned that adol is the only playable character in this game? No party at all? I'm afraid it's gonna be boring
