Sadly, I just don’t think many believers even think through the history and gravity of the terms they use, even less have a basic definition of them. Yet it doesn’t stop them from confidently retorting against their opponents. Thanks for this video. You packed a lot into a small space. 🐑

I think your efforts in making these videos is massively helpful and important. I grew up reformed but was not aware of all the historical theories that took place in making a very different doctrines. I was raised on the Belgic confession and the Heidelberg Catechism but did not see the value in these until recently. All I knew was if something was different then what I was taught it must be wrong.
Thank you for doing this. May God bless you and keep you.

I want you to know i really appreciate this series!! As a Calvinist myself, I have often thought that the PSA theory of the Atonement contains many of the other theories. But the main theory as i see it is PSA

One big problem: Jesus Himself gives a picture to Nicodemus of His atonement-the serpent on the staff in the wilderness. This picture makes it clear that His atonement is available to ALL. Would you really like to argue against Jesus’ own example?

" No man is excluded from calling upon God, the gate of salvation is set open unto all men: neither is there any other thing which keepeth us back from entering in, save only our own unbelief."
      John Calvin
Calvinists agree that the gospel is sincerely offered and only rejected or accepted by mans own will.
So you are definitely a Calvinist

@markc4176 Jesus' death makes it possible for all people to be saved, but does not save everyone. If it did that would be Universalism. Narrow is the way that leads to life, but few find it.

    • @markc4176
      @markc4176 35 минут назад

@@kevinjodrey7664 @ the serpent didn’t save everyone in the wilderness either, but that’s not the point. The point is that relying upon Jesus’ propitiation is akin to looking at the serpent. Anyone could look at it, just as anyone can believe. Calvinism claims that some people can’t believe even if they wanted to, which is unbiblical, and therefore wrong.

Great discussion and explanations pastor Burris. I wonder if we took a poll from every person who comments on this video how many of them have heard of 1, 2, 3, all, etc. of those different theories of atonement throughout church history, what kind of result we would get. A good question all of us should ask ourselves is this: Have I heard/been taught these different theories in my church? If I have, how many of them have I been taught? If I have never heard of any of them, why have they not been taught in my church(es)? Part of being able to engage in polemics/apologetics is understanding the definition of a particular subject or doctrine, but also being able to explain where it came from and how it developed. Did it appear suddenly in it's current form, or did it develop over time? What caused the changes over time, if it did? Who were the people associated with those teachings and were they orthodox or heretical in their doctrines? How closely does that doctrine hold up when the passages of scripture which teach it are examined thoroughly with a strict emphasis on exegesis of the texts in their proper contexts, using sound hermeneutical principles of interpretation which are used exclusively by those who are orthodox in the Christian faith?
What you have here ladies and gentlemen is a man who doesn't just blurt out what he believes and say "that's it.. believe it or reject it". Instead you see him taking the time to lay a foundation, being careful, rather than careless with his teaching. If you have a pastor that is this careful and thorough with biblical doctrine, you have a diamond in the rough and you should not only thank God for him/them, you should fervently uphold him in prayer that God would use him mightily to transform your life for the glory of Christ, transform your fellow Church members for the same reason, and to draw all of you together in union with Christ, that the Gospel and Word of God would go forth each Sabbath with the power of the Spirit of God. I don't mean trite little prayers. I mean fervently engaging in deep communion with your Father, Son, and Spirit, by faith, for the furtherance of the Gospel, the building up of His Church, and for the salvation of sinners for our Lord of Glory, Jesus Christ.
If you don't have a pastor and teachers like this, either pray for the Lord to make your pastor one, or pray to the Lord to lead you to one.

In his teaching on this issue, R.C. Sproul stated, "Everyone believes in limited atonement." Only who limits it and in what aspect? Either man does, in the power of Christ to save apart from our free will decision, or God limits the number of people saved, if that makes sense.

I had a discussion with some of my family the other day on the subject of Calvinism, and during the discussion, my BIL stated that He’ll isn’t punishment for sin- it’s just separation from God. How he logics that out in light of Scripture, I’m not sure. I’m concerned that his view may be somewhat heretical, but he’s so stubborn I’m afraid any sort of confrontation will end up with him stonewalling. 🐑

I'm pretty new to this stuff. Is the word atonement ever scriptural? My English Greek Concordance has the word conciliation. And my Concordant Literal 2 Corinthians 5:19 writes: ...God was in Christ, conciliating the world to Himself, not reckoning their offenses to them, and placing in us the word of the conciliation.
The good news, the gospel, right? True whether one believes it or not. Everyone EVENTUALLY is saved. Those who are saved FIRST are the esply of believers Paul mentions. The mistake of Calvinism is replacing the FIRST with the ONLY. But at the consummation, after the last, fifth eon, when our Lord abolishes death (and at that time only those dead in the Lake of Fire, the SECOND death, are still dead), all are vivified, given life beyond death.
So many do not know the truth of the eons. The word in Greek is Aion satanically mistranslated eternity where the obvious translation is Eon. The five eons. HUGE difference HUGE truth. Since the flood we have been in the third what Paul called the most wicked eon. Two GOOD eons remain: the 1000 years and the new heavens and earth. Such words as eternity eternal everlasting forever and ever do not exist in a properly translated Scripture. You Tube something like The meaning of Aionios.
God is love and has no fellowship with eternal punishment. That would be Satan having fellowship with bible translators. Wow, how successful that fellowship has been.
But I digress. That God was in Christ on the cross already conciliated would seem to debunk somewhat the moral example theory of atonement.
The substitutionary atonement I've heard people argue mistakes FOR with INSTEAD. They argue that Jesus was punished FOR us and our sins but not INSTEAD of us. That we, too, will be punished for them, at least for those who die before they are given faith to believe the gospel. Those who are given faith become either members of the body of Christ who are snatched away before Jacob's trouble begins and are not appointed to His Father's indignation, or are members of the bride of the Lambkin and are given protection during the tribulation. Whether God punishes those who believe before they're raptured or before Jacob's trouble begins I'm not sure.
Does the ransom Satan theory have any Scriptural support?
You did a good objective job from what i can tell. I'm assuming limited is in the sense Calvinists if not most Christians do not believe all will even eventually be saved.
