I really enjoyed this video. I have a soft spot in my heart for these old tractors. I’ve repainted several 4010s and a 4020. My dad had two 4010s , a 4020 power shift, which was one of my favorite tractors. He also had a 3010 which I still have. I also painted a 4010 for a friend once. As the equipment got bigger so did our tractors. My dad ended up selling all of them except for the 3010, I wouldn’t let him sell that one lol ( I later wished we’d kept the 4020😢). Ours were all propane tractors, I would love to have a 4020 diesel, console tractor, but I really would have no use for one other than to have just to have 😂. These tractors were so easy to work on. We did all our own overhauls and everything. I am wanting to build a shop just for restoring these old tractors, for myself and others. I really liked your 3020 with the factory duals, don’t see too many of those.
@ 2:25, the frame rails are most definitely different on the 4020! They were heavier, and the attaching points at the front of the engine block used 4 bolts instead of just 2 as with the 4010. These changes gave the 4020 considerable more strength for loaders. 4020 frames will fit right on a 4010, but if you try to fit 4010 frames on a 4020, you will weaken the joint at the front of the engine block.

Yes, that will look and work great with the duals. I love the 4020. Nice to see some of the differences right there. Interesting fact about the scavenge pump on the syncro stopping with the clutch.

I think the synchro range tractors had a flat floor board, power shift tractors had a hump in the middle. Didn't work well for carrying a water jug between your feet. The power shift was cool, but it would cook my feet in the summer!
My grandfather bought a 4010 when they first came out for his 1080 acre farm in Florida. I drove it pulling a 5 bottom plow in 5th gear and it ran like a champ. It would run all day long. I miss those days.
Some small differences in the front end was the frame was a 2 hole for engine mounting and the 4020 had a 4 bolt...awsome video! I'm in the process of marrying a 4020 rear end with a 4010 front...4010 trans is junk found a good deal on a early 4020 back half
A little tid bit for you... The old oil bath housing can be converted to a dry filter. It takes a little cutting and welding. The worst part is getting all the screens out. I've spent I bet over a combined 15,000 hours on 4010 diesels and 4020 diesels both sycro and power shift. I have a 1966 4020 diesel of my own. My fuel filters are double spin on canisters with a drain/bleeder. I see yours was switched to the square one. (Stock up on them as I have had trouble finding various filters.) I was curious what the filter next to the generator is for. My block heater is mounted on that mount. I like the M&W cover on the hood. Most of the ones I see are hatchet patch jobs but I think if I were trying to make a clean restoration I'd take the hood to a good fabricator/bodyman and have something welded in so it looked clean. Nice tractors and a nice shop.
Very informative - the equipment focused videos are definitely my favorite. Evidently our 4010 has had a few 20 series upgrades on it such as rocker shaft covers with the tool box. I always wondered why the hydraulics were shaky starting up but they seem to do well once the engine is warm.

Thanks for the video lot of good information. My ideal 4020 would be a 72 model powershift 38s on the back. Hope you have a great afternoon lot of cold air coming through from the West.
Your 4020 is very sharp. I also appreciate the straight rust free sheet metal. I like your row crop tractors. I ran a 4020 row crop wide adjustable front axle in 97 98. It was a 1 owner tractor at that time.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the bucket had a mechanical latch, so no oil needed for bucket tilt. She was sold at auction in 1991. Wish I could show you. My Dad plowed and stacked mountains of snow and loaded tons of manure from our pole sheds. I did some myself. No chattering at all.
@@Blackearthexcavationandtiling holy shit guy, the man said he didn't have any problems, my cousin bought a 4020 synchronized in 1980 w/JD loader and for over 40 years it loaded many thousands of 4x5and6ft hay straw and silage bales for a 150 cow dairy with multiple operators myself included and with over 10k hrs it still is easy shifting nice handling tractor, but what do I know, only been repairing tractors, other colors too for almost 40 years now. Apparently you being thee authority on JD tractors did you ever consider the possibility that the units you've dealt with have seen better days.
Love the 4020. Grew up on one just like it. We had a 2010 and 3020 as well but the power shift was the one we all fought over. We later got a 966 hydro but it never really grew on me like the JD. Thanks for the vid.
That charge pump explanation was the best I ever heard. Who in the world at JD ever thought that was a good idea I can't understand. I guess the dual PTO clutch prevented the charge pump from being driven all the time. All the brands of tractors of the time had their major flaws though.
On the syncro tractors with a loader, if you have a hydraulic valve that stays with the loader it works better. You put a t in the pressure line down by the brake pedals and the the return goes to the hydraulic filter housing. You can buy a filter housing from deere with this return line already plumbed or some guys just braze a fitting to the old filter housing. Doing it this way allows all the returning oil from the loader to go back to the front pump without the oil having to be repumped by the transmission pump.
Wrong.. return to filter housing is only available on a 3020 powershift .. there is no port for a 3020 synchro- but your right you can weld a bung in the cover... still doesnt help though bc your returning oil to the transmission case . When clutch pedal is pushed the scavenge pumping the rear end stops and it wont feed the front hydraulic pump any longer ....
@@TheJohndeere466 your not understanding...... The hydraulic pump is in the very front of the tractor .... anything bellbousing, back is the rear end- which is were the oil is housed ... to get oil to the front hydraulic pump there is what's called a scavenge pump in the rear of the tractor.... when you push in the clutch pedal the rear end of the the tractor is dead - 100,% shut off .... so in other words the scavenge pump doesn't feed the front hydraulic pump anymore.... so it doesnt matter where you return the oil - it will not get picked up and delivered back to the front pump until the foot clutch is released ....... we have one tore down in shop right now, if you need to come over, I am happy to show you in person how this works .....
I realize all this but the filter is between the scavenge pump and the front pump so returning the oil to the filter makes the scavenge pump not have to repump the oil.
@@TheJohndeere466 so.your saying somehow it uses the return pressure to loop it back to the front pump basically ..... which is wrong - it just goes back inside the transmission case and still requires the scavenge pump ... plain and simple - if your scavenge pump does not feed your front pump (which it doesn't when the clutch gets pushed) ..the your front hyd pump starves and the loader or whatever your using the hyds for - will chatter and wont operate correctly....... When our 3020 was syncro range - with a loader we had it plumbed exactly like your talking about .. didnt change it at all ... when we had the rear end apart for repairs - I quickly realized why
There was a hog farmer near beloit ks that had a 4010, his grinder mixer was 1000 rpm PTO, everything else was 540, usually once or twice a year they would break the pin that shifted the pto speeds
Was why my dad would never use a bush hog or PTO Ditcher on our 4010 but used them on the 4020's our synchrorange transmissions were great because we never used a loader.
Front engine mounts 4010: 3 bolts, 4020: 4 bolts, engine block (drilling) and frame rails different, all other engine parts the same, at first on 4020, except fuel filters were cartridge on 4010 and spin on, on 4020. New style (69+) had basically a completely different engine , only really shared displacement and color. Early 4020 hydraulic system was identical to 4010 except for front drive coupling(interchangeable, most updated, as I don't believe old parts any longer available). The most significant difference is the PTO. The two speed gearing was located in front transmission case and shifted to 540 by no recess in low speed output stub. 1000 RPM was spring engaged, either with no stub, or the 21 splined stub with recess to not contact shift rod, passing through center of shaft. 4020 has two speed gearing added to the rear of trans-diff housing, and had no mid or front PTO. I think that this change was made to accommodate the option of power shift transmission. I have found the weakest part of all the synchro tractors was the clutch, and the PTO clutch coaxial installation in the flywheel, was a poorly planned idea. Many other manufacturers ran a live shaft from the engine to run all the hydraulic pumps, as well as powering the PTO clutch. Another difference is 4010 has pull out fuel shut down, whereas 4020 was either throttle stop override or key switch (electric). New style 4020 all had pencil style injectors, an Bocsh rectangular glass fuel filter. Bottom line, early 4020 had more in common with its older brother than the younger. Fun fact, upright air intake and precleaner was optional on 4010, standard on 4020.
4020 had belly pto, was only 1000 rpm though. 4010 belly shaft ran whatever speed rear shaft did. Upright air cleaner stack standard on 4010, optional on 4020. A lot of con belt 4020's had under hood intake.
Good looking tractor, however, I can't agree with the hydraulic levers on the console being advantageous. My 71' 4020 has the PTO to the left of the steering wheel and the hydraulic levers to the right of the seat. JUST LIKE the JD 4840 that I drove as a kid with a disc and cultipacker. Long story short John Deere changed the levers and PTO around and carried it on to the newer series tractors. I can't imagine feathering a disc in a wet spot with the lever on the dash. I was taught to spend a good percentage of my time looking back at the implement. That makes the right side lever perfect as you can adjust without actually looking. Long story short I think that mod on the late 4020's was a step in the right direction... FWIW, IMHO, and IME.
Nice! All of them! I still have the old "66" 3020...syncro, and really miss the 720 My favorite was the D. As a youngster I was too short to work the peddles....and the hand clutch worked for me. 😉 Green has always been my favorite color! 🤠

A local farmer brought a 69 4020 and 4520 125 horse power the dealer put a mw on the 4020 the stories goes that it was pulling a 5 bottom plow like the 4520 but it was running off a leaving it the 4020 was pushing over 125
I believe that you are wrong about the 3020 engine being a shortened 404, since the four cylinder 3010/3020 had the balancer shaft to lessen the inherent vibration in the 4 cylinder (270 CID) engine. I wonder how many 48/58 148/158 loaders were installed on these tractors WITHOUT having the reinforcing plates that went on the inside of the frame rails? They are shown in the parts manuals for these loaders.
There was an attachment thT didn't go over to well very destructive to the engines it was commonly called A Red Rooster Booster it was an attachment to put either a 20 or 30 lb. Propane tank it would give you extra fuel and power when you hit the switch. Alot of hired hands and kids would over engage it ultimately burning up the engine
My son just bought a 1968 4020 and it has the square shaped intake manifold that drops down. It has the wide block like a 4010 but it has pencil injectors. Its also 24 volt with a 24 volt alternator. Would it be original like this? It also has a non adjustable front axle.
Great comparison video and very useful. I have a 4010 and your video helps me see areas I needed to know about more. The battery box I have isn't under the seating area and I like your better. Would you send me some info on the box, and how it attaches to the tractor? I tried to figure it out from photos and shop manuals and its hard to picture without pictures.
Great comparison video! I'm pretty knowledgeable on the two-cylinders but never quite understood the differences in the New Generation models. From a distance, they all look the same to me lol. I wouldn't mind having a 4320 or something similar one day. But I really have a soft spot for the 30 and 40 series.
Actually, the biggest difference between any of the “10’s” and “20’s (be it 4020, 3020, etc...) is the redesign of the rear end. My Dad was one of the engineers in Waterloo that was part of the redesign. The 10’s were not holding up in field tests as well so JD “beefed” up the bearings, axels, and gearing in the rear end, transmission, etc. to be stronger....more metal in better places. They are all great tractors, but there is a reason the 10’s were not made long and it was the need for a redesign. Dad was tell you to always go for the “20” series over the “10” series .... but they are all good. The 4020 is still the most popular and revered.....
Hi guys. I think I might have found someone to answer a question. I have a 1966 3020 narrow front with a gas engine and syncro trans. It was priced right and I really like the tractor except the gas motor. I got a wild hair of swapping engines. I can get a 329 out of a 6600 combine. I figure on the 40's frame rails and hood, if the hood isn't too wide. My big concern after a heavy duty clutch will the rearend stand up to the 100 break horse. If anyone has any answers or thoughts I would greatly appreciate it. I know you all love running those old Deeres as much as I do.
Nice video guys. I learned a bunch. My grandpa and now my dad has a gas powered 2510 synchro. A lot of similarities. Loved that tractor. A true multi-purpose row crop tractor. My dad semi-restored it about 10 yrs ago. But he's probably going to retire and sell it in the next couple years. It will be sad to see it go.
Thanks for asking.... the turbo was on the tractor .. but I find some on craigs list now and then.... Dengler tractor parts ...or Colfax jowa salvage yard have good supply of parts
I do like the way you put the original parts back on ! You gotta love the style in the new generation tractors, that hood just makes it look like its going fast! Does the 4020 have the aluminium MW oil pan ! I have a 190 or a200 Allis Chalmers muffler on my 2940 with the MW turbo, its less restricted than the JD mufflers . Thanks for sharing that nice tractor
We have a 4010 and 3 early 4020 standard tractors that Americans call wheatlands, they all have clamshell fenders and no pedal cowlings. We have a pair of 67 4020 standards with the big fenders and pedal cowlings. We have one 4020 standard with cab so it has the fenders built in. I think the switch over was 1966 but not sure off the top. We do have a 3010 diesel row crop like an American except when Dad ordered it new, he got the wide adjustable front axle, so it looks more Canadian. ! I love my American style narrow front row crop tractors. Nothing handles better at row ends. Could you guys get diff lock on row crop tractors ?
I have one more question the one we have is a powershift transmission witch I love. The problem is ours locks up in 8th gear like you slammed it into park all other gears work perfectly good except park does not work either does anyone now what's going on with that please let me know what your thoughts are
We had a 63 4010, a 64 4020, and a 67 4020.... the best one was the 64.. we had an IHC 19FT. 45 Vibra Shank field cultivator the 4020s would run with it the 4010 not so much....
Sprayed a lot of tobacco juice on my cousins 4020 he got upset until I told him if I was getting paid for daylight to dark work I'd feel real bad. Red Man ,4020, dusty fields and free labor its a good deal.
Without watching the rest of the video 1st, is there also a difference with a 4000 vs 4010 or 4020?, years ago I helped on my cousins farm and I used a 4000 diesel alot, with that said, is there much of a difference?.
I have a 4320 needs some head work done runs incredibly smooth but blows a lot of blue smoke due to oil on cold start and has a fuel line leak. But I’m a mechanical idiot so idk
Great comparison of these JD tractor models Curious how the late 60’s early 70’s 4020 compared to the 4000. Was told the 4000 had more Hp, but really couldn’t tell the difference when hooking them both up to same chisel plow. Liked the seat side hyd controls on the 4000 though...
@David-v5n3r 4020 was NOT a wet clutch.... powershifts were wet clutches - but those are internal clutches (much different than a syncrorange) ... there are several 3020 and 4020 clutch videos on my channel .... 30 series was first JD with a wet clutch - and they were all wet clutch tractors despite the first tech manuals stating they would be made with a dry clutch
dif lock an option on 20 series. All syncros have the third reverse, some you had to cut out the slot in the shift collar. Using third reverse continually can cause a seize in the tranny so JD tried to delete it.
you forgot 4010 only had 3 bolts in front of motor where frame rail mounts 4020 had 4 good to see old tractors earning keep new ones won,t be around that long now a little ribing massey 1100/1130 were better ha ha merry christmas happy new year

The filter is after the transmission pump so if you return it to the filter, the transmission pump does not have to pump the oil again.
Yeah that was a problem on the 4010 tractors that they corrected on the 4020
Was why my dad would never use a bush hog or PTO Ditcher on our 4010 but used them on the 4020's our synchrorange transmissions were great because we never used a loader.
I always preferred our 1967 4020 to our 4010 did not like the 24 volt split electrical system was a problem child!!!!
Yes sir! All good tidbits! Thanks for taking the time to comment
4020 had belly pto, was only 1000 rpm though. 4010 belly shaft ran whatever speed rear shaft did. Upright air cleaner stack standard on 4010, optional on 4020. A lot of con belt 4020's had under hood intake.
Thanks for the great video. Can't wait to see it in action
Thanks Very much!
4020 looks really good as is. Waiting to see when you're done making it in your image 👍🏾
The 4010 engines sound better than the 4020 in my opinion, and they don't smoke when they idle.
Great video! Full off some great information! Thanks for posting
Thanks so much!
Many hours on a 4020 great tractor
Great video! I just inherited a ‘63 4010 industrial. Do you have any videos about the industrials?
I still have the old "66" 3020...syncro, and really miss the 720
My favorite was the D.
As a youngster I was too short to work the peddles....and the hand clutch worked for me. 😉
Green has always been my favorite color! 🤠

A local farmer brought a 69 4020 and 4520 125 horse power the dealer put a mw on the 4020 the stories goes that it was pulling a 5 bottom plow like the 4520 but it was running off a leaving it the 4020 was pushing over 125
good informative vid nice 4020 would love one myself once had a 5020 to big though. regards UK
One of my uncles had 6 5020s and pulled twin 2.5 yard Reynolds scapers behind each tractor ,moved alot dirt with those 6 units
Good video. Always informative!
I remember those... they didn't sell a lot of them
My son just bought a 1968 4020 and it has the square shaped intake manifold that drops down. It has the wide block like a 4010 but it has pencil injectors. Its also 24 volt with a 24 volt alternator. Would it be original like this? It also has a non adjustable front axle.
I too, grew up on a 4010 LP, very good tractor. I am also a fan of the 6030. It looked like a 4020 on steriods.
Absolutely... thanks for watching
Interesting.. thank you for taking time to comment .. and thanks for watching ..
I put a lot of hours on a 2520 diesel, I sure liked that little tractor. I had a 4020 synchro too, but preferred operating the 2520.
I’m interested in knowing where you got the turbo kit from and also where you get your parts from for the jd 4010.
Thanks very much- I sure wish I had an m&w oil pan!
What years did the 4020 come with the the wide fenders and the front wrapr around pieces by the clutch and brake pedals just wondering
I think your talking about the wheatland version... which was available all years (I believe)
not a year thing, was a wheatland option. Usually had no 3pt and a swinging drawbar and solid front axles.
Okay
The problem is ours locks up in 8th gear like you slammed it into park all other gears work perfectly good except park does not work either does anyone now what's going on with that please let me know what your thoughts are
I like your 4020 nice tractor
We had a 63 4010, a 64 4020, and a 67 4020.... the best one was the 64.. we had an IHC 19FT. 45 Vibra Shank field cultivator the 4020s would run with it the 4010 not so much....
Sprayed a lot of tobacco juice on my cousins 4020 he got upset until I told him if I was getting paid for daylight to dark work I'd feel real bad. Red Man ,4020, dusty fields and free labor its a good deal.
🤣
The screen on the 4010 is called a corn picker screen
Y wld u convert to a dry element over a oil bath?oil bath is less maintenance and does a better job
Less efficient... plus the turbo can suck oil out of it
I spose our 4020 doesn’t have a turbo
Looking good 👍
I have a 70 4020 with all the M&W stuff on it
Sweet!
Without watching the rest of the video 1st, is there also a difference with a 4000 vs 4010 or 4020?, years ago I helped on my cousins farm and I used a 4000 diesel alot, with that said, is there much of a difference?.
A 4000 is a 4020, with cheaper tin work ..and 3020 final drives ... they were designed as an economy tractor ...
4000 was a 4010 with a 4020 engine
@@TheJdeere4020 kind of .. but not entirely.... 4000 had 4020 engine and transmission but used 3020 final drives
It will look great with duals
Was the front PTO an option or was that standard?
Standard
Very interested
Seria muy interesante ver los comentarios traducidos al español , 👍
Interesting as always
Never had a problem with our loader on a 3010 syndrome range.
That's wonderful then ...but clearly you have no idea what I am talking about
You did not talk about the hydraulics difference between the two
Good point! ... 4010s lacked on flow and capacity in comparison to the 4020
Why is your pro lever so short? ?)(4020). They are longer on my 4010 and 4020. Have a good day!
Powershift had the short lever ... sycro had the long lever
@@Blackearthexcavationandtiling thanks
How do turn it up
Nice tractor. Getting hard to find good looking 4020’s.
Hard to believe it's over 50 years old!
Put a chrome or stainless straight Pipe on the 4020! It will sound great! Especially with the turbo!!!
We never understood why dad's John deere 730 diesel never had fenders we finally realized that fenders were an option and dad didn't buy options
I have a 4320 needs some head work done runs incredibly smooth but blows a lot of blue smoke due to oil on cold start and has a fuel line leak. But I’m a mechanical idiot so idk
We’re some of the early 4010’s powered by a Cummings engine?
Cummins, and no. JD put their own engine in the tractor.
3010 has the fat injectors as well. I have a 3010 I did a video of. Check it out
Those fat injectors were made by Bendix, some early 20s also had them.
My 4010 has grease zerks on front axle that 4020 doesn't have.
How much power is the 4020 turbo putting out
I would estimate about 110 to 125 pto horsepower
The differences between the 4010 and 4020 are quite subtle...
Nice 4020 ..
One of the differences that you didn't mention was the 4020 had a differential lock option and the 4010 didn't....
Good catch!
A 4000 was a 3020 John Deere with a 4020 engine.
No it was a 4020 with a 3020 rear end and single hyd remote!
The farmers back home have a saying, "everyone needs a 4020"
The first farmer I worked for said one "a farm without a 4020 might as well be using horses".
Great video!
Thanks!
Grew up with, 2010, 3010, then 2940
Gorgeous 4020.. I hear the pulling guys like the synchro trans because it stronger and the 4010 rear since its lighter.
Thanks!
Can you roll start a power shift?
Unfortunately no ...
I’ve got a 69 4020, nice rigs!! I need to paint mine....enjoy the comparison...
Thank very much! .... cool!
BLACK EARTH EXCAVATION & TRENCHING, LLC you bet....
The 4010's
had a dry clutch. The 4020's came out with an improved wet clutch.
Nice video! One other difference between the 4010 and 4020 is the (Sycro range only) 4010 has 3 reverse speeds and 4020 has two reverse speeds.
Thank you ... we had a 4020 syncro with 3 reverses.... the 3red reverse just wasn't labeled
Also no diff lock on 10 series.
dif lock an option on 20 series. All syncros have the third reverse, some you had to cut out the slot in the shift collar. Using third reverse continually can cause a seize in the tranny so JD tried to delete it.
Yr 2020 traded for a 1963 4010 there is no pressure at the rear hydraulic remotes everything else hydraulic works can anyone help me out?
Sounds like an issue with the valve body under the hood... are you sure the 3 point is also developing full hyd power?
3 point goes up and down not sure if it can lift anything. The inside lever makes a little fluid noise when moving the outside lever none.
@@tinycat06 i would say you have a bad valve somewhere.. sounds like something is sticking
Thanks the place I work red tractors got it as a trade in .
@@tinycat06 ahh gotcha ...
Nice!
you forgot 4010 only had 3 bolts in front of motor where frame rail mounts 4020 had 4 good to see old tractors earning keep new ones won,t be around that long now a little ribing massey 1100/1130 were better ha ha merry christmas happy new year
Depends upon the serial # .... lol .... and I missed several other parts too .. thanks for watching though.... merry Christmas
