When I was 10 years old (in 1975), my dad turned me loose on a 1964 4020 Powershift with a fresh overhaul and an M&W turbo kit pulling a five bottom, sixteen inch John Deere semi-mounted plow. It was late November, near Thanksgiving, so I was plowing at night. Dad was running a 3020 with a four bottom mounted plow. I'll never forget that night. It was the first of many long days and nights working the ground. I don't farm much anymore, since I'm a consulting mechanical engineer, but I still have a small place -- and a 1966 4020 Synchromesh. The 4020 was the best tractor ever made. Period.
Impressive results, didn't expect them. The 4020 wasn't even burning coal at 120, where as the 4230 sounded like it was struggling to get 115. Thanks for the great video, even with the mud, it had me scratching my screen to see if it was on mine.
I put a turbo on a 4230 years back . Used turbo, manifolds and piping from a 4520. Perfect bolt up and fit , and the hole in the hood was perfect for a 4 in pipe. Ran it at 140 hp for 4400 hrs, sold to a neighbor and its still going.
Had a turbo charged 1966 4020 with power shift. She had around 120 hp. The biggest issue was we should have put a larger radiator on it because it would overheat. That wasn't a problem you can drop a gear when working if needed.
Can’t be many of the 30 series around with narrow front ends. Also I saw the 2 row corn head in the background there at the beginning I hope we get to see that pull type combine in some corn next fall.
My dad bought a brand new 1965 4020 with the standard shift trans and a 5 bottom plow, I was 6 yo - never forget it, my older brothers and I crawled all over that tractor for hours that night! Probably 10 yrs later, installed the M & W turbo kit with that same straight pipe, primarily to pull the 2 row Fox chopper. We also had a 'year round' cab installed - boy that beat the hell out of those plexi/canvas 'weathershield' on the cold VA winters back then feeding the cattle. On dark morning, riding with my older brother, pulling a 216 loaded chuck wagon up a pretty good hill on one of the county dirt roads in 8th gear, brother said watch this and he floor boarded the throttle as an orange flame grew about 8 inches tall out of the stack and burned the chrome off! If the old man new about that sh*t he'd would of burned our asses!
Hi John . I’m a new subscriber to your channel. You have some rare and awesome collection of tractors. I’m a John Deere tec for 15 years out in California Great videos keep up the good work
4020s were the best john deere made. My grandpa bought one brand new in 1965 and grandma has it today and she's only got 5799 hours on it. My dad's old neighbor has 1966 4020 Powershift M&W turbo and that was his big tractor untill he bought his 4440 brand new. He blew the motor up in 4 times cause he never had a pyrometer on it and run super hot
The tractor I wanted to see pull was the 671. But it looked like no turbo just the roots blower to run. Greyhound buses when I was a kid was an 871 and would pull any mountain pass at 70mph. Not sure how big the gas tank was, er fuel tank but would drink on a tractor so a 671 would work better. Old Ford flat head v8s work sweet on an 8n.
My 4230 when I purchased it in 1980. Dyno at 105. Very fine tractor. Very cold natured however. A little shot of ether needed even in very warm weather. I would be very interested in seeing your rebuild with a high compression pistons.
Stick around then! I am pretty sure it is going to happen. We have two 4230s we use very often with high compression pistons, and it is a night and day difference.
The coal mine had a 4640. Hard starting cold weather even plugged in. The starter spun slower than other tractors. We converted the two 6 volt batteries in series to two 12 volt batteries in parallel. Solved the problem. Spun like other tractors. Started much easier. On paper two 6 volts have more amps but one battery has to go through other battery which makes me think all amps cannot be used effectively??
In 1977 I bought a new JD 4040 Quad-range diesel (404 ci) with the understanding that the dealer was to put a turbo on it and give me regular new tractor warranty. Before the instal I asked the shop foreman if he’d dyno it for me which he did. With the new turbo installed, the shop foreman contacted me to ask how much hp I was wanting so he could set the fuel. I told him not to reset the fuel. Leave the pump factory stock and dyno it again. Without the turbo it dynoed 92 hp. With the turbo to dynoed 135 hp! With the same fuel setting. So from then on I’ve advised my friends not buying a diesel without a turbo. They’d be wasting fuel if they did.
Other M&W options were a slightly larger fan with more blades and shroud, plus a Pyrometer. The pump was to be reset for less fuel delivery, 115 hp. If not they usually had 135 hp if on the stock setting.
@@RennerStockFarms Most guys would buy everything but the pan because they were expensive. Pans are the hardest thing to find. Most people don't count the number fan blades either. 7 if I remember correctly. The stock shroud will not fit those fans at all.
@@RennerStockFarms interesting. He had it for many years with no issues. Was nice to have 20 extra ponies with the flip of a switch. Was the silage blower tractor that used the extra power and also a 12 ton spreader, and 4 bottom plow were main times used the lp.
Hi John I’ve been watching your videos of the 4020 with the m&w turbo . Just wondering if you could point me in the right direction. I have a 68 power shift 4020 that my dad and I are restoring . Would like to know about purchasing a m&x turbo kit and the shield for the exhaust you made in one of your other videos. Any help is appreciated Great videos really like watching them 👍🏻
I need to ask you a question is that stack double-lined I just got a 4020 and looking for a straight pipe but Steiner's pipes say double-walled I guess protect the pain
Like all of your repowers, quite the collection. One suggestion I would make to you is to wear ear protection around all of those strait pipes. I grew up around 4020’s with cheap cabs that where super noisy. Not much fun saying “WHAT” all the time. LOL!!!
@@RennerStockFarms years ago, I was bush hogging with a 720 Diesel with narrow front end. I was in deep brush, briars and such, when suddenly, the right rear wheel dropped into a big hole that I couldn't see. Nearly rolled the tractor. A wide front end would have dropped a front wheel in first, alerting me to the presence of the hole. Scared me pretty badly.

That vintage 4020 had an 8 qt oil pan. The 1969 and later had 12 qt pans.

I saw a 4250 with a tricycle front end. I think that was the last series that you could get one. Correct me if I’m wrong.
They also have a fan with more blades. Ours has that, what yours had & the sleeves & pistons. 145 on the pto.

That 4020 should smoke like the 4230 does, the 4230 needs to get rid of that little muffler they don't help it at all, nice tractors!!

M&W also make a fan and shroud to go on the turbo converted 4020's. They are extremely hard to find.

Just curious where you guys are located...? Looks like plenty of open flat-ground for those Deeres to rome...
Not a better sounding diesel engine than a JD 👍✌️
How much does the compression increase with those pistons that you were talking about. I think that it's 16.5 stock
My Uncle had a 4020, not sure of the year. He had added a liquid propane tank on the front and that added 20 up at the flip of a switch

I bet you will get 135 out of the 4230 after the rebuild and turbo. Our 4620 with 9K hours never OH'd puts 162 hp last time we had it dyno'd.
I think so too, but I am going to bet closer to 150.👍

Does that 4020 with the m and w turbo have high compression pistons in it
No it doesn't, it has every M&W option other than the M&W pistons.
Does it have the fan and shroud?

Yes sir!
Putting a turbo on a 4020 is basically turning it into a 4320 so you should see 115-120hp
Always talk to the mike guy so we can here what you say, thanks.
30 series have a lot of unused potential having low compression engines, it should really wake that 404 up having high compression pistons
Between the pistons and the turbo it makes for a really snappy tractor!
