On my 4020, I used fibreglass (?) header wrap to completely wrap the exhaust manifold. It does a really good job of keeping the exhaust heat inside, not on the intake and other things. I think I had 1" wide wrap.
What a great vidio Jon I am glad u ar getting back into vidios again. It is fun to see Jake at work, his knowledge is awesome. My son and grandson will be at your show and am looking very forward to it. Thank you
The show sounds great, shame I’m over in the UK. Brilliant job on that old John Deere. My brother used to deliver John Deere agricultural vehicles from a company based in Wiltshire.
I know what you mean about block changes. Our 1968 4020 diesel was 86 horsepower doggy tractor. The new 1971 4020 we bought had 104 horsepower out of the box and was a great tractor. We overhauled it with 10,000 plus hours because the water pump went out and it overheated.
Is that a 620.with a cotton Picker on it.A dairy famer had one here He took the picker off and used the tractor. The rest of the year. He also had one of the first 4320 s I ever seen . That brings back a lot of momries
Jake & Jon. I put an M&W Turbo on a JD 4020 syncro, serial 238,000 I recall the installation instructions saying to put the probe of the pyrometer on the rear boss of the exhaust manifold, in the cast iron underneath the intake portion of the turbo, then to set up the pyro properly, put the tractor on a Dyno running engine at first stop on the hand throttle, sliding the probe for & aft , where you got the warmest temp,. lock the ferrill and nut and probe was set properly. My dad and I had an M&W dealship, when they ceased operations what happened to the M&W sleeve and piston portion of the company? Specifically the. Generation 2 ?
Are there mods to the fuel system on the 4020 with aftermarket turbo? We use Evercoat feather fill high build primer on every resto saves time and work.
We did not make any changes to the fuel system in this tractor, just new injectors and the pump turned up a bit. Gramps is a big fan of the high-build primer.
Sounds great! did you guys turn the injector pump any ? Reminds me of the 4020 my dad had . He put a m&w turbo on it back in late 70’s early 80’s . I loved working ground with it with duals on and 14 foot disc for 13 year old boy was nothing better .
Hello John, there is nothing like firing up some diesel awesomeness and listening to that turbo sing! What kind of H.P. Will that M-W give you? As always, great video and God Bless my friend.
A late 4020 with an M&W kit usually was about 115-125hp if the pump wasn't messed with. They could touch the 150hp if you really twist the pump screw but the rear ends hated that.
@Dave Blodgett The earlier 4020s with a M&W turbo would generally come in at 135. The instructions said to turn the pump back to yeild 110-115. If a shop had a dyno, they usually would pull them back. Most kits installed in the barn were not. There was more to it than just a manifold, turbo and pipes. Optional was a 7 bladed fan plus the shroud, and a larger aluminum oil pan and a pyrometer to watch the exhaust temperature. Lots of guys would buy the fan but the oil pan was considerably more money, partly why they are hard to find today. Keeping the oil cool enough was another part of the issue along with the rest of the drive train being up to the increase of power. If you bought all the options and set the power to 115-120 and kept the Powershift serviced, those tractors did just fine and went for many thousands of hours. Those were the smart guys that saw that backing the fuel off and gaining more power was actually saving them money in several ways.
I hope this is not a loaded question, but you see your uncle, and your grandfather all the time, does your father work in the family business as well? Maybe it has been said in previous videos, but i guess i have not see where you have mentioned him being involved..
Don't waste your time with that old Rajay turbo. Put on a T04 Garret they're alot better turbo. Leave the turbo oil filter off, they're to restrictive. Where did you find the M&W pan, because I've been looking with no results.
We use the Rajays because that is what originally came in the M&W kit, I am sure the Garret is much better. Jake got that one from a friend, I am not sure where the best place to find one is.
I was going to send you a can of John Deere green but then I saw a can on your shelf full of paint. It would have been a lot easier before installation and that heat shield need pait if for no other reason to keep it from rusting. As an auto mechanic, these things would have all been painted. Rust is ugly!
You are good mechanical guys. Keep it up thanks
The turbo plumbing looks so neat, Renners do great tractor makeovers. Happy new year from Australia.
Thank you and happy new year!

Sounds awesome you guys make it look so easy and your explanations are great! Wish you could do more videos
I am hoping to get more vidoes out, just crazy busy!
Jake must be the most knowledgeable guy who works on old JD tractors that still has all his fingers.
I think that is a fair statement!
What a awesome sound on start up. Your surrounded by geniuses.
I worked for a farmer years ago we farmed 1400 acres we used 5 4020s they all had cabs they were great tractors 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What a great vidio Jon I am glad u ar getting back into vidios again. It is fun to see Jake at work, his knowledge is awesome. My son and grandson will be at your show and am looking very forward to it. Thank you
Jake and Gramps are both packed full of knowledge! Can't wait to see you guys at the show!
Love the 4020 with that rollover bar and canopy. Nice work!
Thanks!
What a wonderful way to spend your off time. Rebuilding old classics. You have a great life and a great channel.
It is a great passtime and I am glad I can work with my family restoring all of these tractors!
Beautiful work! Everything you do is so impressive.
Thank you Ashton!

Wow! 10,000 hours is a bunch!
Sick 4020. The 720 LP with the cotton picker on it is pretty neat too
Unfortunately the 720 has a stuck cylinder, so I am not sure what the plan for it is yet.
Love the videos
Great video as usual ! 👍
Thanks Scott!

Maybe one day for me, but for now I will stick with my two cylinder models. I would love to have a 4320.
No problem with that! The 4320 is a great tractor.

That is a really good question and I do not have an answer for that right now, I'll have to ask around!

I believe the pump was already turned up. That would be a sweet ride as a 13 year old!
@@RennerStockFarms I will have to find some pictures of it was a was the tricycle front end
Very nice 4020 and turbo setup, Does Jake pull wrenches at your dealership as well?
He used to, but is now full-time at the farm!

The other guys beat me to it, but somewhere in the 120 range!
Sounds mint guyzz
Thanks Jeremy!
Hello, I have a question: how much do john deere tractors from the 60's and 70's cost in the US?
I hope this is not a loaded question, but you see your uncle, and your grandfather all the time, does your father work in the family business as well? Maybe it has been said in previous videos, but i guess i have not see where you have mentioned him being involved..
He is not involved in the business. 👍
Fine work guys! How many engines has Jake rebuilt?
Oh boy thats a good question. I'd say its in the hundreds!

I like it
Why in the hell did you not paint the engine before installing it?????
I was dead set on ruffling your feathers Brian! I'm kidding, but Jake plans on painting this tractor soon anyway.
Ok I was got.
Why not paint the motor before putting everything together ?
The whole tractor is getting painted soon I believe, I guess we just got antsy!
