I'm no mechanic, but I work on my, and my families VWs and Audis, and I ALWAYS hated my life when I had to take off or put on wheels. So a tool that saved me from early gray hairs was a *Wheel Hanger.*
Paul’s spot on with the triple squares. However I like the rubber hockey pucks for jacking so my floor jack doesn’t ding up the bottom of the jack point. Also, having the wheel nut rod that screws into the hub, it makes tire removal and installs go much smoother.
I didnt have a set of picks until I watched this video, so I went out and bought them and they saved my ass a few weeks later... they make a lot of things easier than they would be otherwise
All I can say is get the impact spline/triple squares bits rather than the regular ones. They are stronger and can be used with an air gun. Makes life a lot easier. Good look with your projects everyone
I learnt about that triple square socket/bit real quick. None of the regular auto stores had them when I needed a set. Had to order it online and I also picked up a complete set at a yard sale for $10. The 3/8 M12 from the $10 set came in handy with removing bolts from a motor mount. The 1/2 M12 that was in the set I ordered was too big for the tight space.
went to change my axle on my gti and didnt have a triple square so i tried to use hex and stripped a bolt head. definitely recommend getting triple square
Great video as always Paul! I definitely agree with everything on the list. The only thing I guess maybe I would add that isn't on the list is the fuel injector tool but that's not as common of a part. Seems like way too often the intake manifold needs to come off and that tool is invaluable. Keep up the good work! 👍🏼
Interestingly, over the years I've accumulated every tool you listed except No. 11. Because I have a TT 225 quattro, the Haldex filter wrench is essential if you have earlier Haldex differentials. Along those lines, I have an air powered chalking gun to inject the Haldex oil when changing it.
So so glad I saw this video....I'm about to change the OEM turbo pipe for the silicon forge Motorsports and I am 100% sure I will need a triple set to remove that bolt that is bolted on the turbo....I even saw a video of a guy here that stripped that bolt because he used the wrong tools....home Depot here I go....a set cost only $20
I would say by far the most used tool for working on cars is the 1/4" air ratchet. No way you want to be working on cars all day without one. I had a lowly craftsman that worked flawlessly for 2 years of non stop use, and its still working I just don't do that much wrenching anymore.
I'd add in a press kit to that list (not really vw/audi specific but defiantly for DIY'ers), instead of buying whole new wheel hub to get new bearings or new parts like control arms to get new bushings, just buy the part you really want cheaply and press them in yourself. I have two pairs of control arms and what I do with the loose pair is repaint and press in new bearings and have them ready when the time comes for new bushings.
I will either read repair instructions and order sockets beforehand, or start the job with shops open to buy what I dont have. I now always buy single sockets from the same socket company rather than socket sets, its much cheaper this way. Eg I only have inverse torx 14 (for 1.8t exhaust manifold to turbo, the socket set I borrowed didnt have 14 and I broke the bolts), and only one XZN (triple square), each cost about 4 eur for 1/2 size.
I love your Black Friday tools sale, every year I get a few more odd tools because the prices can't be beat. Sometimes I doubt I'll ever need/use them, but I can't pass up the sale price. lol
Oh my gosh, YES! This video is so spot-on. Before watching, I tried to come up with my own list, and so many of the tools that you mentioned are things that I completely overlooked or took for granted. PICKS!! SPRING CLAMP PLIERS!! I didn't get too far past the triple square, honestly! Great video!
Something weird, but critical, could be polydrive. You can get triple square bits at AutoZone in a pinch, but polydrive is either tool truck or online. I'd keep a couple different sizes of those on hand. Mostly engine stuff, but a lot guys do their own timing chains/belts and a lot of cam gears are held on via polydriver fasteners.
I would add brake piston pusher and auto brake bleeder, god these things are awesome to work with. Also spark plug wire removal tool and a spark plug socket with holder, you can get these really cheap on the internet, and even the cheapest ones do their job well.
I own an 08’ VW Passat & a 11’ BMW 335is... What scan toll do U recommend for both cars ? Preferably one that can reset the airbag fault as well. 😉 i know the rear break calipers don’t release when changing the pads unless U have one 🙁.. I’m will willing to spend a little more dinero 💰 if it’s worth it 🤔.. I also own a 10’ Ford F-250 Super Duty pick up, but that’s a hole other story & I rarely ever have an issue 🤫..
Nice vid as allways, and would defenitly be the same order jaja, only missing the suspension kit im a DIY so dont need it urgently, can you help me out, about to do an auto tranmission maintence on a 6 speed, Not a DSG one but I think its the 09a think so not sure dont have the filling tool do you recommend I proceed or suggest to get the filling tool. Keep it up!
Your forgot the 18mm wrenge, where I'am from this is not included in any set and you need to buy this size. Without it you cannot change ball joints, front springs ect...
Relay tester, spray electrical cleaner and vacumm bleeder for antifreeze. Vw and Audi cars are known for eletrical problems. Most important tool money to pay for all the parts.
The hose clamp VW specific pliers are a must have and the triple squares are my number one too an oxygen and acetylene torch and a good welder are for any automotive shop
I know you guys are US based, but can you tel me if EU VAG cars also use Triple square? In this video is see Triple square fastners on the front brakes... my EU bora (jetta) has HEX on everything???!!?!?!
@@Deutscheautoparts funny you should say that, there's a place here in Australia called VAG Parts www.vagparts.com.au that send me a 10mm socket with every order i place, how cool is that!!!

I drove into a sevice station and the owner ran over too me and said. Thats a 2013 jetta are u crazy 😜 we would never work on that u need a VE dealer only. Fml
I dont agree with oil socket tool. Its too small and always fck the plastic nuts. A universal wrench is way better and it will work on bmw , acura, nissan, name it

Triple square definitely the most important VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda tool there is 👍
I'm no mechanic, but I work on my, and my families VWs and Audis, and I ALWAYS hated my life when I had to take off or put on wheels. So a tool that saved me from early gray hairs was a *Wheel Hanger.*
It's not truly VW specific, but a brake caliper wind back tool can sure make life easier.
Michael Ramey Yeah. I always rent mine for free from any auto parts store because I need it so rarely. And, free...
Good addition!
Got a cheap set on eBay. Without it I never would have. Been able to do my 2015 Jettas rears!
I just did my brakes. 2014 GTI. I bought a master brake tool kit. It has the wind back and push back tools with bracing plates and all that. Heaven

Torx bit set was the first thing I bought for my S3. Best purchase I made. Haven’t done a job that didn’t require it. Then got my triple square set 💪🏼
is an S3 reliable ?
@@priveprive5315 I would say so. 50k on mine and I’ve not had any major problems.
@@mikehawk8609 thanks good to hear 👍🏻
I bought the Torx set from you guys and i can't tell you how invaluable it is. It opens up so many possibility with car.
Your triple squares are extremely handy for working on VW’s. Great product!

My wife stole one of my magnetic bolt trays for her hair pins... universally useful!
The Magnetic Bolt Tray is really cool tool. Thank you for this great video.

I'm not a mechanic but just a big DIYr. I would put Torx bit set as #1, Allen bit set #2 and Trim set #3. Thanks Paul.
Just got a mk7 golf R so I’m trying to learn everything I can to be prepared. Thanks for sharing!

I find Torx is a lot more common than the triple square on Audi’s
Audi on the brake Calipers
Nice, now I need only a magnetic tray and I have a perfect toolbox like DAP ❤️

Back when I got my 99 Audi A4 1.8T I had source alot off this stuff individually a real pita but I learned alot.
Add ignition coil pullers and a spark plug socket to the list as an honorable mentions.
#12 A couple of inter-looped zip ties for pulling the coil packs.
At opposite ends of the cowboy scale. A couple size torque wrenches, and a massive hammer.
10mm, 13mm, 17mm sockets.
