    The dtc optical databus open circuit in the Gateway and "invalid wake request" in the 5F unit on these cars are a software issue on all B8.5 MY2014 models equipped with the MMI Navigation and leads to delayed booting of the MMI when starting the car sometimes. Update the MMI to latest K0942 fimware and the Gateway to SW 0060 and it will be fixed. ;-)

    The best way I found to inspect my 03 allroad was a drive on hoist. I have loud clunking in the front and I could not identify the bad ones until I had someone creep forward and step on the brakes a few times. Then it clearly was seen the lower rears were shot and very loose. eBay had great deals I have 2 in the mail for it.

  • @jollyrodger1537
    @jollyrodger1537 3 года назад

    Thanks. I just did upper lower and tie rods. some clunking noise in suspension.....just after that on the test drive. my transmission cooler line failed blew fluid out the passenger side front grill and is was pretty scary. tires were losing some grip before i knew what happened
    I can say after 1 yr of driving it it is a great car. but the car is a lot more expensive to fix than the 2.0T engines that I drove in the past. I have put probably 6k in it and havent fixed an oxygen sensor or worse problem in the exhaust. beware if you are buying high mileage car and love to keep your car running great

    We have a 2016 3.0 tdi quattro, best all rounder. However our 2017 volvo xc90 hybrid is in another league. Our 2015 Q7 was a pleasure to drive until some moron t-boned it. A little underpowered though. If I had the money I'd go out and purchase an SQ7. I test drove a 2017 model. It was in a league of it's own. The power & acceleration was unbelievable.

    Owned my B8.5 S4 since new and live in CLE next to a Morton salt factory (no joke, I see the dump trucks all the time). My exhaust clamps simply fell apart and looked like that on inspection up until that point (15:30). What I’m saying is: You may not have had an aftermarket exhaust on at first. Could be like me where they disintegrated. New clamps fix this quickly due to the design of the flex section in the DP.
    Now the flex sections on the DPs are my next worry as time goes on…they look crusty at 87k miles.

    Useful content as usual Paul. Having a quick question here. On my 2017 mk7 GTI I have roughly about 25500 miles on it. I would say 75-80% is highway mileage. Would that be a lot different (in a good or bad way) than those ones with 75 80% of city mileage?

    • @onedrinkbutnomore7647
      @onedrinkbutnomore7647 6 лет назад

      City mileage is not the best. Constant stop-go, acceleration / braking causes much more wear and tear on just about everything (engine, transmission, suspension, brakes) than steady highway driving. Also, for a TFSI engine, city driving is worst on the carbon build-up. The actual worst situation is short-distance city driving. No time for the engine and transmission to get to optimal running temperature. I have a 2012 A4 (B8) and do about 75% long-distance highway driving. I first changed my brake pads at 100,000km. Will do it again soon at 200,000km. Hope this answers your question.

    Awesome vid! Glad its S4 time, appreciate the links as well.
    What are you thoughts on the timing chain tensioner "chain rattle noise on cold start" issue? I understand there is a TSB out since 2015 (which says no damage is occurring) and much debate online regarding if this is a real issue and whether the fix might be worse than living with it. Does your S4 have this noise at start up? If so I'm leaning towards not fixing mine.
    15 Engine rattling noises at cold start - V6 3.0 TFSI
    15 15 26 2039995/1 March 3, 2015.
    Model(s) Year VIN Range Vehicle-Specific Equipment
    All 2011 - 2014 All V6 3.0 TFSI
    Condition
    Rattling noises are heard from the timing chain drive for about 1-3 seconds after the first engine start of the day.
    Technical Background
    The noises are caused by one of the upper chain tensioners. The noises do not lead to damage.
    Production Solution
    Improved chain tensioner.

    • @LynxStarAuto
      @LynxStarAuto 6 лет назад

      Onearm Bandit changing the tensioner will only result in a short term fix. As they wear, the slack when the engine has been sitting for hours will cause cold start rattle which should immediately go away.
      It's a shit design, with no permanent fix, and requires engine removal to do it.

    • @kdshiv
      @kdshiv 6 лет назад

      Lynx Star Automotive Thanks for the reply. If it is just a sound issue then great. What worries me is that Audi is repairing it under warranty and given the time/cost involved of an engine out repair they must think it's necessary? I'm all for not fixing it if it doesn't cause a mechanical failure down the road. I'm just trying to find the right thing to do as I'm no mechanic. Sounds like your advice is leave it alone even if under warranty?

      So did they end up improving chain tensioner in later years?

    • @kdshiv
      @kdshiv 6 лет назад

      Ilya Elis for the 2017 model year a turbo charged engine replaced the supercharged, but I'm not sure about the timing chain tensioner specifically.

      Onearm Bandit Yeah I know, but I think it's safer to get B8.5 instead of B9 for reliability maybe. That turbo engine and B9 platform are new. Not sure though.....

  • @NA0533

    How reliable are these? I got a newborn on the way and will need 4 doors. I was looking at B8.5 S4, as well as SQ5 (2015-2016). Many recommend Macan S for performance and reliability.....

    124k is considered high mileage for one of these? I'm new to Audi..

    • @KunaevNS
      @KunaevNS 4 года назад +4

      I think he meant high mileage for the year. 124k miles for a 2014 car is pretty high regardless of what it is. Also, this video was shot in 2018 so that was only a 4 year period.

      124k miles is extremely high mileage on a car that is 4 years old (video was shot in 2018). You can still find a B8.5 S4 with significantly less mileage. Parts are very pricey for this car, you don’t want to be in a situation where you get the car for cheap, yet the repairs going down the road may cost you more than the value of the car. Like here in Montreal there are so many used B8.5 S4’s that sell for around $15-20K, with around 80-90K miles on them.

      V8 4.2 have the timing issue ⚠️ right? I'm looking at a 90,ooo+ mile 06 S4. It's a one owner, drives good, but when you turn the steering wheel you can tell somethings clicky sounding coming from the passenger side. What could it be? Should I pass. Wife's selling her Ex husbands car and the asking price 4500. What should I do? I like the styling and ride of the S4.....Help Help HELP 🆘

      @@vocalone23 I don't know about V8. V6s do need to have their timing chain replaced after 150 000km sometimes it can last longer if the good oil is used.

      I have a 2013 Audi S5 that I purchased a year ago and it does this too. It only happens when I'm driving slow and approaching full lock on the steering. It's been this way since I purchased it, so I think it's normal.

    • @kieranbrooks8216
      @kieranbrooks8216 6 лет назад

      I think this is to do with the rear differential. My 2011 S4 does that as well but only low speed manoeuvres at or close to full lock. It sounds almost like a distant, deep grinding noise? I also drove a friend’s 2010 S4 before I bought mine and his had this characteristic too. It’s nothing to be concerned about.

    • @soundtinker
      @soundtinker 5 лет назад

      The shudder at full turn is from the center torsen differential and is more or less normal and nothing to worry about
