"I wish I had a dad... Like you." well you got Uncle Iroh Rufio
That scene where Iroh hugs Zuko and he apologizes makes me cry every time
Much better then Peter!!!
😢😭🥺😭😭
Dante Basco played zuko, i see what you did there
Oh my god that is zuko
Rufio's death hits hard when you realize that he saw Peter Pan as a father figure that he was trying to emulate. He even mimics Pan's hairstyle.
So true. I cried when Rufio got stabbed and then said " DO you know what I wish?? I wish I had a dad like you " That quote hit hard
@@jaredsegura1404 when he says that before he dies always gets me
I think that's what game Peter the edge over Hook was the anger he had towards Hook for revenge.
Rufio is the closest a lost boy ever came to equaling Peter Pan. Thats incredible.
Yeah Hook had to change out his sword for him
He was better , he just couldn't fly . In original story Peter is the bad person in Neverland ( reading it between the lines )
@@stevenvandereycken267 he wast just a brat like most of us were as kids
@@stevenvandereycken267 No Peter was better. The fact Rufio lost to Hook and Peter beat him proves that. You can by his facial expressions Rufio was having a hard time keeping up with Hook at the end of their fight. Also interesting to note here Peter didn't fly for any of the actual fight. Yeah he flipped off the ship to the docks but after that he kept it fair and fought on the ground
He was leader when pan went off to get hes end away lol
I love that even Hook looks slightly mortified and worried at that glare Peter gives him after Rufio dies. He knew Pan wouldn’t give him games or chances after that.
What makes it better is that the two pirates that held onto Jack just noped out of there when they say the rage in Peter's eyes
He did give him chances after that? He disarmed hook and handed him his sword back Heck when he disarmed him again he gives him another chance to leave neverland
@@Michael-cz6obOnly because Jack talked him down. He started forward and I don’t think he would’ve spared Hook if he was uninterrupted.
This scene is still hard to watch as someone in their 30’s, I nearly cried when I watched it as a 12 year old. You would never see this in movies nowadays, a grown man stabbing a child in the heart during a sword fight, after watching a childish, playful battle of the lost boys beating seasoned cutthroat pirates with eggs and marbles, shocking and reminding the audience that there are real casualties and consequences in armed conflicts. Hook is a great movie, to hell with the haters.
Well they have swords too lol
All the pirates would had to have done was take out their pistols, muskets, and the swivel guns on the ships and started mowing the Lost Boys down, if this were a real fight. Just saying.
I get you, even though Rufio was played by an adult. Dante Basco (Rufio) was in his twenties or oearly thirties at the time.
@@Wildnose1337 No he wasn’t. He was only 15. Where did you get that info from?
@@alienator4684 I guess my info was a wrong. Sorry.
The way Hook kept saying Rufio's name makes me think the two had a run in more than once.

Likely
If only critics were kinder to this movie.
This version of Neverland feels so vast and the characters have so much depth and backstory.
It deserved more movies.
Aleni Rivera charles 🗡
Very true
I love the way Hook acts after he's killed Rufio. He knows he went too far and it turned what seemed like innocent sport and sword fun into a very real, very dangerous battle. Peter looks at him with rage rather than in a playful manner and it took all the fun out of it. Then Hook asking him where he's going like a friend who has wronged his playmate. I think Hook liked the back-and-forth between him and pirates against Peter and the lost boys. While in Neverland you can never age and it was a way for him to enjoy himself. He burned Peters house just because he didn't come back, which he could've done at any time. I think he envied Peters youth and saw him leaving as some sort of abandonment. Peter unwittingly took away Hooks only enjoyment out of the immortality he would be granted in Neverland. The difference was Peter got to grow up. Hook was stuck as a bitter old man and if he left Neverland he would die within 2 decades. Peter still had his youth and I think Hook was jealous.
That is a fantastic take. Well said.
As I got older, there are parts about “Hook” I can appreciate the most.
When I was younger, who wouldn’t want to be a kid forever and have fun in a place you never grow old
But as you get older, things become harder and you do become bitter. And you look back at your youth will longer and have a strong distaste for what you have become.
Imagine living in that state for centuries.
Staying in your middle age
The amount of torture it is
Which is why Hook was so suicidal
@@joshuasantana685 Pan represents the best and the worst of Hook's life. On the one hand Peter gets to be free and fly around as an immortal and have adventures. He gets to have everything Hook can't.
On the other hand, clashes with Pan give Hook a sense of purpose. He has no meaning, no direction to his life except his desire to defeat Peter Pan. Except if he ever accomplished it, he would absolutely kill himself after. Without a strong antagonist, his immortality has no purpose for him.
I like to think that's part of why Hook tries to adopt Pan's son in this movie. It was partially to strike a blow against Peter but also being a father gave Hook a meaning he had been missing before.
The absolute thrill that is written all over the face of Hook when Peter shows up flying again is very telling.
Great insights all of you 👏🏽
I feel bad for the pirate underlings haha! Everyone kills them and no one gives a shit about them after ahhahah!
The most underrated moment is Hook just saying Rufio’s name. In that 1 second you know that Hook is seeing red and that they have a history. Such good acting and writing!
Hook has probably killed alot of Lost Boys, and Rufio has probably hurt alot of his crew. Makes sense.
He also repeats Rufio's name in a way as if he's luring him into taking revenge.
He's Rufio's shadow.
Rufio... Rufio...
I WILL NEVER FORGET IT WHEN HE SAID THAT NEITHER!!!!
I must have been 9 years old in the theaters!!!

They don't make em like this anymore... sadly. Truly emotional.
Hook is an incredible movie. The emotions stay with you since seeing it as a young kid. No movie made today can come close to that. The story, the characters, the sets, the score, all top notch.
@@mck7646 hook was the generations movie magic at its finest, nothing that the mc or dcu cgi will ever top. But that's the difference between practical effects and over exaggerated cgi. Rufio's last words based on his happy thoughts, which was to have a dad just like Peter, were so touching. Who can blame Jack for wanting to go home after he saw what Hook just did?
this is the closest thing of seems Robin Williams playing Link, since he was a big Zelda fan
No wonder his daughter’s name is Zelda, he named her after the Game.
Ironic enough before BOTW, Link and his green tunic is based on Peter Pan.

0:23 “Rufio…Rufio” you can tell Hook and Rufio have had a history together since Pan was never around. Great job writing w acknowledging that. It would have not hit the spot if Hook and Rufio never even talked throughout this movie. This scene is awesome
There was a novelisation of the movie. It includes tons of material and plot development. I’m sure it gave a slightly better history between Hook and Rufio. It would have been great to have had a series of prequel novels where Pan is still Pan. We could learn why Peter and Rufio ended up as rivals. More of Hook being Hook, actually leave the ship to duel and flee from the crocodile. More danger and adventure. Something along the lines of Peter Pan and the Pirates that came out at the same time as Hook on Fox. It was a Saturday morning cartoon with Tim Curry as Hook! Nobody seems to remember it though but I remember being hooked (sorry…) on it as a kid in the early nineties. That and this!
@@musicalmagpie741 I don't think Pan and Rufio were ever rivals. I think Rufio was always second in command to Pan. He just didn't know if the true Pan had returned at first.
When Hook sees that Rufio is going to be his opponent and he actively switches which sword to use, that's talks of history and preparation. That adds so much depth in such a quick amount of time. If all Peter Pan works were under one house, Rufio could have been a "Harley Quinn'. The character is still popular today.
@@patrckhh20 True. If anything, I think Pan and Rufio might have been best friends (almost like brothers in a sense). Rufio probably took it harder than anybody (with the exception of Tinkerbell) when Pan left which is why it was so hard for him to believe that Pan had returned when he did as a middle aged man. Part of him wanted to believe it but a part of him also was angry with him for leaving him and the other Lost Boys for so many years so I think that might have caused some inner resentment as well.
@@musicalmagpie741 If they would make a Prequel today...then it would be full of METOO and all that crappy and silly LGBTQ and all that other things...i dont care for that and they can do what they want but today you can clearly see when a movie gets politic in it,sort of agenda and that sort of movie many ppl dont want to see...when these things are more in the foreground than the story it ruined every movie....
3:05 the glare Peter gives to Hook, he was ready to finish him right there for killing Rufio
the fact there's nearly zero cgi in this whole film made it age like fine wine
Modernity doesn't mean quality. This is why I hate when people say special effects in old movies look bad. For example, it's more impressive to do something like Hook in the early 90s than the average big budget productions of today.
@@ivanmartin1457 Jurassic Park is still one of the most gorgeous films ever made.
Rufio was the closest a Lost Boy ever came to measuring up to Peter Pan, let alone dueling Captain Hook singlehanded or die trying, which is what made him Peter's successor after Peter left Neverland and came back.
yeah, but you see how he struggled to keep up during the duel
Hits hard - genius
That's rough buddy
I'm pretty sure no one else has said it so I will. Can we appreciate the fact that Dustin Hoffman is doing all of this choreography in a huge wig, heavy elaborate costume and high heels?
Rufio’s death hit me so hard as a kid. It took me four times of seeing this masterpiece before I could no longer shed a tear. RIP Rufio 😢 ❤️
All he wanted was a dad
I’m 32 years old, have seen this movie 50 times and still cry every time I watch it
I bet Peter would have adopted him.
Hook's sword play is amazing. It brutal yet subtle and he uses his hook so well. Seemed Rufio was on the defense most of the time
That killing blow at 2:29 came out of nowhere. Rufio couldn't even process that it happened, let alone respond to it.
Hooks swordsmanship was truly elite.
@Foxhound3857 His main weapon was a rapier and while it's typically paired with a Main Gauche, his hook serves that purpose with aplomb. The way he managed to both parry and disarm in one fluid motion was outstanding.
@@Foxhound3857 Hook made it seem like he was going for a downward chop, so Rufio brought his sword above his head to block it. But he wasn't expecting Hook to glide his blade off of his and go for the kill
0:40 Rufio so badass..."Okay hook you wanna do this? Alrite"
Rufio's death blow reminds me of the behind-the-scenes Lord of the Rings story about Saruman's death. Christopher Lee spoke to Peter Jackson between takes and said, "Do you know what it sounds like when someone's stabbed in the back? Because I do." He was referencing his military service, and talked about how people don't bellow or scream when they're pierced through the chest like that because the air is driven from them. Rufio's weak, startled gasp when he's run through feels something like that to me. It's so much more upsetting to hear than a big dramatic scream.
I was looking for a comment like this. Rufio’s clearly very skilled with a sword and probably never expected to be hurt in battle, let alone killed. The shock and fear in that moment is perfectly captured in that sound, especially since he’s just a kid
“I wish I had a dad...like you.” I’m 35, and that makes me proud :) but cry 😢 too
This was heartbreaking watching it as a kid and still is as grown man

0:45 That face. Hoffman nailed the role!
I love Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook!
The fact that Hook changes out his heavy Scottish basket-hilt broadsword for a dueling smallsword shows how deadly Rufio is. Hook acknowledges Rufio as a worthy adversary and probably knew he needed a speedier weapon to deal with him.
Rufio's death was vital. To drive home the notion that life and youth is fleeting. Death is inescapable...and so is life.
Rufio did put up a good fight.
As a 40 year old man, i still cry.
I am 36 and I still feel the same emotions if not more than when I watched this as a kid
Hook went for the kill, only when rufio taunted him at the end, he took that personally.

Rufio's character development in this film was the best.
Hook switching his swords before fighting Rufio... must be he knows how skilled of a swordsman he was. Also, smallswords like that are probably easier to wield than a basket hilt broadsword.
If your opponent is better than the average swordsman and doesn’t have a particularly heavy sword, then it is the smart move to switch to a foil assuming you have experience with that style.
@@mrgibbets34 makes sense to me.

Although Hook may have used an actual foil in the movie where he should have used an Officer's Smallsword. Such an odd choice.

Smallswords are incredibly light.
I have two of them. The 1796 British Heavy Cavalry officer's dress Smallsword is very nimble. I think it weighs around 1lb. Definitely designed for the thrust but it can do some superficial cuts.

3:01 Okay, no one talks enough about this face on Pan. Of course Rufio's defeat and murder was beyond heart wrenching, as were his final words to Peter Pan. But right there. Right. There. Is the agony and rage of someone who is shocked that he just witnessed a kid being murdered and the father who knew that Hook would have done the same to his kids; he has more than stepped over the line.
I honestly think that is the most intimidating Williams has ever looked-and I mean EVER, including the likes of Insomnia, One Hour Photo and the episode of Law and Order S.V.U. he was in. That is the look of a father who knows the pain, the agony of losing his kids, and hearing Rufio's final words, realising that he was not only respected and admired, but even kinda pined for by him... THIS is the moment Hook should feel fear, not excitement. This is the look of a man who just made killing Hook his only option. When you see a man look at you like this-worse, a FATHER look at you like this, you only have one option: RUN LIKE ALL FUCKING HELL!!!!
Dude this is such a great comment. Holy crap. Later on, Pan was about to run his sword through Hook's neck until Maggie stopped him with that natural compassion of a young kid. But yeah that look. Hook realized that that the crocodile wasn't the only thing that wanted to end him

@@tylermontgomery4408 Well on the outside he has the appearance of a child, but he’s been living in Neverland for over 40 years, which makes Rufio at least 55 years old, assuming he was 15 when he got to Neverland since Dante Basco was 15 when he played the role. Since it’s Neverland, for all we know he could be hundreds or even thousands of years old. That really goes for all the Lost Boys, they’re all much older than their youthful appearances suggest. This would also explain why they give no care in the world about killing and how it doesn’t disturb them at all, and how they’re able to hold their own(and win) against Hook and his Pirates. So really in Hook’s perception, he wasn’t dueling a kid, he was dueling a long time enemy and someone who could potentially be his arch rival.
Rufio was always my favorite character the swagger he had was truly something
Man i love this movie so much, I have the book of this, and both are great. I just adore when Maggie goes, "Dad!!....Dad?" when she sees Peter sword fighting.
The sheer look of joy on Rufio's face when Peter flew away.....
I bet that means Rufio has been looking forward to fighting Hook for quite some time. If anything, I think Rufio must've been harboring a grudge against Hook
I love stuff like this.
All Hook says is "Rufio...Rufio" beckoning him to fight. If this were being made today, they would have a whole Hook/Rufio sideplot that takes attention away from the main story and feels bloated.
Here, all we get is Hoffman saying a character's name and it clicks in your brain that these two have a history and have fought before.
Perfect example of getting the most out of the least.
Imagine your entire grown man crew losing the 8 year olds in hand to hand combat
I think most of them were older than that. From the looks of them, they seem to average somewhere between 10-14 with Rufio being the oldest.
@@Cestro I mean Dante Basco was 15 when he played the role so I would assume that’s how old Rufio is. Or more accurately how old he was when he came to Neverland. I say that because the Lost Boys are semi-immortal, meaning they don’t age and therefore can’t die naturally but can still be killed. So if Rufio was 15 when he got to Neverland, and Peter left Neverland for 40 years. That would make Rufio at least 55 years old. Then again for all we know he could be MUCH MUCH older than that.
@@alienator4684 Possibly. I often wonder if he knew or was even around when Wendy and her brothers came to Neverland. Of course, that would've been back in the early 1900's but who knows?
Technically they weren’t 8 year olds like you said. They were in neverland for many years. For all we know some of them are over 40 years old while the ship crew is probably hundreds of years old.
Based on how they are dressed you can tell what era they were originally from.
Um they are probably all centuries old
If there is to be a new set of Pirates of the Caribbean movies, all I ask is to find a way to bring Dustan Hoffman back as Hook. Please do it for Rufio, lol.
Hook dead
0:23 Rufio!!! Rufio!!! Rufio!!!! Rufio!!!
I just love how hook when he saw Peter give him that death stare at the end there was moving back and for a few seconds you could see hook had a bit of fear.
...From the Peter and Wendy novel, Pan has _one rule_ that all Lost Boys who serve under him must obey...
_"Leave Hook to me."_
Peter recognizes that Hook isn't like the other Pirates - he's much more dangerous. Pan is the only one skilled enough who can best him, which is why Pan orders all the Lost Boys to fall back and stay-out of the fights between Hook and himself. Part of it might be for personal glory, but if Pan does have any good nature in him, it's to keep them safe...
Peter is ready to step-up to Hook when he sees Rufio closing in. But the fact that Maggie calls for help - as a Parent - Peter is more obliged to rescue her first; she and Jack are his highest priority.
And then there's Rufio. Throughout the movie we've seen Rufio's jealousy. He fancies himself _the New Pan._ He took over in Peter's absence and has been leading the Lost Boys since. Heck, given Hook's demeanor and acknowledgement of him, it's probably true that they _have fought before._ Sure, Rufio humbled himself earlier when Peter regained his ability to fly and handed the sword over to him, but on some level, he's still jealous.
He wants to prove that he's as good as the Pan - probably because he knows that Peter will leave when they rescue the kids, so he'll be back in-charge anyway. He has to prove he's as good as if not better than Peter.
...And I think Hook knows this. I think that Hook's demeanor to Rufio is different than how he is with Peter. With Pan, you can tell he's holding back a great deal of rage, while also showing a deal of admiration and respect - because Pan is his other-half, for want of a phrase. But with Rufio, I think he knows he has the boy outclassed. The way he says his name after Peter leaves, sounds more like he's _goading_ Rufio on, trying to entice him to fight. He wants him to disobey Peter's orders and step-up, luring the Boy to his inevitable death.
Heck, there may be an argument that he could possibly hate Rufio _even more_ than Peter. According to the book, the real reason Hook hates Pan has nothing to do with losing a hand, but more to do with how cocky and arrogant Peter is. Hook finds that behavior _insolent._ So based on the movie, we know that Rufio is even more arrogant than Pan is, despite the fact that _he's not that good._
If Hook feels Peter's arrogance is misplaced even with how skilled he is, Rufio must infuriate him even more for daring to be more arrogant without being as good as Peter. He doesn't perceive Rufio as a big a threat as Peter, but his attitude is intolerable.
There at the end of their fight, Hook has Rufio on his knees after temporarily disarming him. Then, in a brief moment where Rufio has pinned Hook, instead of pressing his advantage, or rising to his feet for better stance, Rufio chooses to _mock Hook._ You can see that this arrogant display angers Hook, and it was this mistake that left Rufio open to allow Hook to finish him off.
Love how Rufio was the first one to go after Hook

Happy 31st Anniversary Steven Speilberg's "HOOK" (DECEMBER 11, 1991)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (R.I.P. ROBIN WILLIAMS. We will always miss you)
I just watched this on my flight from New York 😢 miss robin williams
0:55 smartest pirate in the whole crew.
They got over Rufio’s death pretty quickly
Yh I think Spielberg shud have at least included a scene where the lost boys and Peter create a memorial for Rufio❤
2:32 LMFAO... I couldn't stop laughing my ass off even as a kid when I saw that scene.
Dustin Hoffman IS Hook - and no other.
2:31 You can tell those two pirates were really shaken up/shocked by what Hook did
I almost get the feeling that most of the pirates really only fought the lost boys as a game. I mean a literal army of battle hardened killers.... allways losing to a band of preteens?! Regardless if one of them can fly.. (you know that could always shoot him...) I felt to thim the idea of being immortal age wise was worth getting a beating from a tot.
@@vexjaeger4314 I mean the Lost Boys only have the appearance of children. In actuality they’re A LOT older than their youthful appearances let on.
What were they even expecting? They're pirates, they kill all the time.
This was even harder to watch with the reunion some time back without Robin Williams ..RIP
Lookie-lookie I got Hookie.
I like ya cut g
EVERYONE HERE IS NOW A PIRATE 🥹
WE WERE ALL THE LOST BOYS
TILL WE GREW UP 😢
Here's a thought. If Rufio had lived, do you think Peter would have adopted him?
Probably. However I do feel like Peter should’ve adopted all the Lost Boys
I thought that even if Rufio was stabbed by Captain Hook, he still did the best he could do!
2:37 where is Katara when Zuko need her!
If Robin Williams were alive today? He be making a lot of new movies today. And he make a better Character on the new Jumanji.
Rufio was one of my first crushes when I was like 6😂. I remember I cried so hard at this scene.
Not much to say here that hasn't already been said - major moment in one of the best films of the 90's. Honestly, I think the duel between Rufio and Hook wasn't just to have them fight, I feel like it was also a way to show the audience the power levels between them. As confident and strong as Rufio is, you can clearly see him struggling against Hook's more offensive advances. Rufio was good, but Hook was just a much better swordsman, not to mention an adult. The gulf of skill between Peter and Rufio is arguably much wider than the audience might have originally thought, and now Peter has to deal with the fact that Hook is a lot more formidable than he remembered. Such a great scene.
Hook is the best movie to remember Robin Williams. Ill always love this movie
I also loved him in jack for his graduation speech.
Most biggest hero in hook is rufio, he understood hook got to be defeated once and for all, and Peter only thought of his kids, what about the rest of the lost boys???
You actually make a good point there 😂.
@@alienator4684 it's actually worse than you think, Peter abandoned the lost boys, they never knew what happened to him, he just abandoned them. Rufio stepped up and probably led them for 10 100 1000 years it's neverland who knows how long. But he gave his life defending the lost boys and Peter was given the lead again Rufio dies and Peter abandoned the lost boys again... There is no doubt!!!!
@@stevenvandereycken267 Damn, I’ve actually thought of that for so long. Peter just showed up to save his kids and leave, he was about to let Hook go. It seemed Rufio understood just how dangerous it was to keep him(Hook) around and was more determined to kill him more than anyone else. Hell, even when Hook killed Rufio, Peter was still about to just let him go. It took Hook calling him back to duel him one last time. Even after they dueled Peter somehow let his kids convince him to let him go regardless of everything Hook had done, and in the end it wasn’t even Peter who killed him. Bottomline, for a long time I’ve been convinced Rufio was a better leader than Pan ever was.
@@alienator4684 believed that as a kid and, I wanted to be Rufio not Peter!
@@stevenvandereycken267 Same!
“I wish I had a Dad like you…” that line hits even harder when you remember that Rufio is also Prince Zuko.
3:01: That look in his eyes… that look of perfect vengeance. All that’s missing is him going Super Saiyan.
I love how Hook considers Rufio the next best thing.
Robin Williams was not known for being an action star but @3:03 his eyes read, “So, you’ve chosen death?”
Yeah about the only other real action movie he did was Jumanji (I guess the Night at the Museum movies had their moments, as did Popeye.)
One of my faves as a kid, it still holds up after all these years.
It would be cool if we knew more of the history between Hook and Rufio... especially if they've fought before.
Inta heart pain. Ain't seen this in so many years, wanted to see Basco. Bam, fighting tears. It was a memorable movie. Always wanted their food.
