      @@grantbob Scary Pockets randomly was on my facebook feed. I loved their cover and thought "I wish I could hear Bill Withers cover that song". So I youtube Bill Withers and find this. Now (I have no musical talent lol) I appreciate Mr. Withers' music even more thanks to Michael Palmisano breaking it down. Then I see this comment and went back found James Gadson on the Scary Pockets feed and start following Scary Pockets and Michael. Thank you everyone for this trip lol, AND James Gadson is the best!:)

    Just wanted to say, I'm getting better in part due to your channel. My ear has been able to pick out chord changes and figure out melodies when I have my guitar. But you've made what I was taught in my music theory class make since. Another part is this open mic i go to and sit in with the house band, and they've shown me quite a lot. But thank you Sir!

  • @stevekirby7333
    @stevekirby7333 3 года назад +2

    There are no slides or hammers on a Clavinet. Every note needs to be articulated. If you listen to the entire song you'll hear some choruses have the first lick end up on G instead of E. Most bands around here play it that way most of the way through. There's an entire soul lesson in the live guitar comps. They are really improvising over the entire song so that every chorus is not the same. That walk up is together with the high hat barks in Gadson's drum part. Which I learned on the drums. And it drives me nuts when folks play though the tacit part. That's a signature part of the song. I've had people do chromatic falls, play E to A and all kind of other noises where it's supposed to be just drums and singer. There are also hits in the 3rd verse when Bill says "Baby" that are on 3-and. Hitting those right is kind of a tell for the band. This is another "Shaky Ground". Everybody thinks they know how to play it, but nobody does it right. I'm not talking about "being a jukebox" right. But before you can "make it your own" you have to get the essence of what made it an anthem.

    Awesome as usual. Two things: 1) I mean no offense by this, but you make funny faces sometimes when you listen and when you play. Is that just feeling the groove? Or is that because you sometimes sing the notes you play when you practice, and you just make your face into the shapes you make when you sing a note out of habit?
    2) Have you done a reacts video to any Duane Allman stuff? Like At Fillmore East?

      @@tomtolbert7416 he's mentioned in another video, way back, that when he was younger he always had his guitar with him and always tried to play along to songs on the radio, songs on records, etc. It's pretty much what any great guitarist did to get where they are. Ear training, transcription, etc. The guitar face, well....that's just what every guitarist does. It's like you gotta move your face muscles to get the notes out lol or internalize them even.

    I'm sure you did great because anyone with an active soul can play this song. Withers was far less about playing music than he was about feeling it. Technical chops won't help paint this groove. I will quote the man to explain, "...if dances don't lead to romances, you might as well e born with two left feet."
