  • Learn how an oil sample taken during an oil change can tell you the condition of the engine in your car.
    With my Ford, I was curious about the condition of the engine after 300k miles. Are bearings worn? Is there a coolant leak? Is my oil protecting the engine? Sure you can do a compression test, but that only tell you so much. I could have used my borescope camera, but again, you only get so much info. With this oil analysis, you can learn a lot about the condition of your engine.

      Great job. I did it by myself the other day and felt proud to do so. It’s a really fun process and you know you’re doing something good for your vehicle. I have a 22R Toyota and they say it will get 400,000 miles easy. Right now it’s at 232,500.
      My ultimate goal is 500,000. I’m trying to change it at least every 3,000-5,000 as a good safe range from here on out.
      How often do they recommend changing automatic transmission fluid? I heard someone once tell me every 6,000 miles but then I also heard 30,000 miles. Given the great disparity, I’d like to hear some other opinions on it.

    • @nickwarner8158
      @nickwarner8158 7 лет назад +131

      Well that is 186,000 miles. Odd that it doesn't keep rolling. They probably just didn't care to pay to put the extra numbers in the thing. Saved 50 cents when they built it or something. Older vehicles don't even have the 6th digit. My 90 Bronco says it has 2500 or so miles on it as I rolled it over 100,000 earlier this year. Downside to that is if you are buying used you can't tell if the think has just over 100k or 400k so the owner can lie to you all he wants.

    This oil analysis is very useful. You can check to see how someone treated their engine after you do a couple of oil changes (just in case the wrong oil was put in before you brought it home) if you purchase a used car. Wish i had known about this when i got my used car, but she is about to hit 200,000 miles so this is now perfect

      Hi Chris,
      I have a RENAULT Kangoo II Diesel, which has an oil filter that is quite a pain to get changed. There is very little room and you need a special Renault socket when you´re doing it the first time and when the original Renault filter still is in place. I have changed the synthetic oil a few weeks ago. Renault says the oil is due every 30,000 km. But I did it after already 25,000 km. But as I didn´t have the socket this time I left in the old oil filter with about 100ml of old oil. What do you think could this do in a total amount about 4.5 liters of oil?

    As always this video is super informative. Hundreds of times I have seen this on different channels that oil was sent to lab for testing and here are the results, etc. etc. But no one has ever explained in such details like you in one by one. Really Awesome man. However, the Lab should do the TBN also which is Total Base Number. This is especially important for Diesel Vehicles. Here in Pakistan, the oil test results are super expensive. They will charge like USD 225~280/- depending how many tests we want them to do. That’s why no one sends the used oil sample in the lab and it gives chances for oil companies to keep selling their sub-standard items openly in the market.

      +Kyle SoSik cars that the owners perceive as cheap and "meh" don't last as long as more expensive cars and/or brands that tend to attract owners who have the mindset/shopping for durability (these folks will generally stick to maintenance more regularly). IMO a cars' longevity these days is just as much a self-fulfilling prophecy due to the consumer attitude and maintenance factors as it would be due to the car actually having some superior components or genius engineering. Yes, ford is not known for going top-shelf with their components, but then there are also stories of things like BMW's putting plastic coolant pumps that are basically designed to fail just after warranty, or "bad years" of automatic trannies on hondas.

    In the 60s I ran a Ford Prefect with a side valve engine. The engines at that time only lasted about 40 or 50 thousand miles. Oil then was poor quality, plus engines then were basic, but easy to work on. Only having three gears didn't help. Modern vehicles are much better manufactured, plus the lubricating oils now are very efficient at keeping the engines clean and well lubricated. We have come a long way.

      +Sloopy .Dog It is amazing how much technology has improved engine wise. Today 150K is considered average mileage!

      +ChrisFix When I started driving in the 60s most car engines lasted about 45,000 miles if you were lucky. You had to de-coke the engine every couple of thousand miles. My first car was a 1947 Ford Prefect. 3 gears, side valve engine, 6v lights, vacuum wipers, no heater, but it did have a starting handle, which you often needed. The engine oil in those days was basic and not very good. Performance cars, like the Jag and Daimler had better engines and the lasted well and were more refined. I have had some great classic cars in my time and I enjoyed every one of the. I even had a Wartburg 2 stroke and several Lada's. Happy Days!

    Old video that continues to age well; Always good stuff from Chris. I just wanted to mention that "POS" for the 'Antifreeze %' line means "possible." Amounts were trace enough that they couldn't say for sure that it's contaminated with coolant, but there were elevated levels of sodium and potassium.
    I am a customer of Blackstone for more than a decade now, and I really appreciate the value their service provides.

    • @checopasha8772
      @checopasha8772 2 года назад

      I thought it was "positive". Like; there is antifreeze but trace amount. Which we can't say how much but; we are sure it is above zero
      Actually that comes to the same thing

      '92 Ford Aerostar with the 4.0L V6 AWD and it's still ticking for me well past 200K with nothing major (biggest job I did was valve gaskets, but I shouldn't have - they weren't as bad as I thought they were). The large V6 Ford engines were built in Cologne, Germany and they are built to just not die - they last like those ancient Beemers do while the body falls apart around it. Transmission and engine don't give any indication of wear by ear or feel of the ride. They took the Ford truck subframe, transmissions, suspensions, AWD engines, etc and just put a van chassis on top of them back then. There was no such thing as a van engine, lol

    • @alexm2623
      @alexm2623 8 лет назад +3

      No, those 3.0's weren't very good. Those were the Vulcan's. They won't last nearly as long, and chronically leak oil no matter what. They gave the 3.0's dog shit in terms of rims, suspension, tranny, brakes, etc. Its tranny is a 4R44E, and they just sucked. The 4.0's had the 4R55E (and later the 4.0's were 5R55E), which is the same as the 4R44E, except it's built heavy duty for towing and rated for 110 more ft/lbs, hence it's actually a beast built to last. Those 4.0 L Colognes are legendary for lasting forever. I know some crazy guys on the Ford forums are still driving them at 950,000! They were the engines built to last, and the 4.0 was paired with an equally formidable tranny. The 4.0 is literally a Ford Ranger/Explorer/Navajo/Mazda B with a minivan chassis with better horse, torque, brakes, suspension, gearing, AWD, etc. I've literally used it to tow a double axle trailer loaded with 6 motorcycles long distance in the hills multiple times a year for several years! They leak/burn about a quart of oil between changes, only get 19 MPG highway, and the power steering pumps are loud and whiny as hell, but that's about it. It did that in 1992, and it's still doing it in 2016 - same amount of oil, same whine from the power steering pump. I replaced all the valve gaskets once thinking it would help with the oil leaking (a couple drops a day), but nope - did it for nothing, though I retorqued all the bolts on the engine I could get to to spec, and that seemed to help a little. I can't say I've ever ran into any electronic problems out of the ordinary. Only thing that comes to mind is that later in its life if it went on a long road trip (10 hrs+ driving in a day) sometimes a check engine light would come on, and after investigating, the computer would think it had backfired for some reason when it hadn't causing the light - it was fixed but just shutting it off and starting it back up. I know it's common, but never tracked it down. The other thing was that one of the airbag sensors hidden away in a PITA location has deteriorated in condition, causing a light. I studied up on it on the forums and the guys there say it's more trouble than it's worth. It just means 1 of the sensors went (due to age/weather - it's lived outside in the north for 10 years+), so it won't trigger the airbag in a collision (there's redundant sensors adjacent that are functioning fine). I would have fixed it, but the guys say the odds of your airbag going off on accident during the repair was almost 100%. Fixed by putting black electrical tape over the flashing light, lol. Can't argue about the body though - living outside for all this time north of the rust belt has not been kind to it. The paint on the roof peels easily, and rust has massacred the body along the running boards. It's caused by a leak inside the doors - rain gets in and rots it from the inside out. I've just removed most of the rust, spray painted the areas with missing paint (doesn't look half bad) and put that black anti-rust goop all over everything that's exposed to try to slow it down. Ain't pretty, but she works and is a good car for the kids to learn to drive in. Safe, and if they wreck it, it's not like I'm out much money, lol
