Absolutely! That's why I'm here. I watched Danny's 'The Ridge'....and I thought: "what is this amazing music playing in the background? It's magic!" Slowly building....and building up into a big symphonic finale. It's great! I'm Irish, but I have to say.....UP SCOTLAND!!
What a voice, what a voice, what a voice I hear It's like the voice of my Willy dear But if I had wings like that swallow high I would clasp in the arms o' my Billy boy What a voice, what a voice, what a voice I hear It's like the voice of my Willy dear But if I had wings like that swallow high I would clasp in the arms o' my Billy boy When my apron it hung low My true love followed through frost and snow And noo my apron it is tae my chin He passes me by and he ne'er spiers in There is a blackbird sits on yon tree Some says it is blind and it cannae see Some says it is blind and it cannae see And so is my true love tae me
I was brought here by Danny Macaskill's video of: The Ridge. And as I was watching his video, I thought to myself what is this *amazing* music going on in the background?....it's immensely powerful So after a bit of research, that brought me all the way to here....to this great peice of music. And I've since found out all about Martyn Bennett and his music. I'm Irish....but I have to say what a great *Scottish* composer he was! *RIP Martyn Bennett.*

Thanks so much for this! I love the sound of the vocalist's voice, and it brought up the same emotional response in me that others experienced. But I couldn't really understand the words until you provided the transcription. I thought, "Oh, she's singing in Scottish Gaelic! How beautiful!" Now that I know what she's saying, I'm now thinking to myself, "No, you ignorant bastard, she's singing in SCOTS!"
I sadly had forgotten Martyn Bennett's name, but wanted to hear one of his songs. Typed a bunch of historical facts I could think of into AI, and it retrieved his name... and my YT search brought me here. I had never heard this performance before. It is fantastic. The musicians truly did justice to this beautiful song. Funny looking at comments, who most appear to be here from a cultural reference I do not know... Doesn't matter, as I'm glad we all can appreciate this song!
Your music is still an inspiration, it is now a year after finding this. Two different series. The second one is to be released soon. Thank you once again!
This music is epic goose bump inducing. I will play this once ive done the impossible. It will make the pain of the past more gratifying reaching my goal at the end.
I just love how great some composers are ❤️ I have just heard this song and it's already very close to my heart . Thank you for this beautiful creation ❤️
Were any of these performances released on DVD? I would love to see "Chanter", performed live again. Watched it from the first Grit concert, then they were all pulled down from YT.
If you have any more of the Grit performances, please post - especially the original concert. They seem to have disappeared from the public domain, and it's a crying shame...
@@sonofthe101 Do you have a RUclips channel? If not, perhaps you could post on Google Docs or a similar service and share the links here? The original performance was one of the most inspiring I've ever seen, and I'd dearly like to have a recording...
That's Danny Macaskill who does (did?) some amazing stunt riding, and he used Martyn Bennett's music as the backing track to his video 'The Ridge' which you can find here on RUclips.

I wish, I wish my babe was born An smiling on some nurse's knee. An for myself to be dead and gone An the long green grass growing over me.

I agree, Danny's video was much better. But here, he's just biking around in laps doing bike tricks, which is okay, but it was definitely an awkward juxtaposition to have a live concert AND a bike stunt show...
WHY, that's the rendition that made it famous and martynn bennett loved and mixed it in his recordings, without lizzie higgins we wouldn't be here talking about it, martynn loved the history of these travelling people from scotland and how they sang.
I m lucky that I have heard this song in my life.

Great performance, just out of curiosity why is there a guy doing mountain bike tricks in the middle of it? No hate, genuinely curious…

" some say it was blind - it cannae see. "
came for the music video, stayed for danny
Just wow
❤❤❤
❤
I love the entire track...do you know what the plain chant (choir) at the beginning and end is taken from? A religious Psalm maybe?
From Psalm 69: "Deus, in adjutorium meum intende; Domine, ad adjuvandum me festina." - "O God, come to mine aid. O Lord, make haste to help me."
Is the full show anywhere to buy on DVD or download?
Sorry, just saw this. I don't think so, Paul. Worth checking the BBC Scotland website, though.
Hello, I'm looking for a hardland flac album. Thank you

Maybe we are too touchy. Maybe we've been scared by sectarianism.

rider could not enjoy the music .. too much
That cyclist ruined the whole sentiment of the song!
P.S: Obviously I know the context.
I agree, Danny's video was much better. But here, he's just biking around in laps doing bike tricks, which is okay, but it was definitely an awkward juxtaposition to have a live concert AND a bike stunt show...
I like the whole thing but I also have to agree with you.
Yes, Lizzie Higgins can't exactly come back and sing this live but I for one hated that rendition.
How can you hate something so beautiful?? Better than most music that's around haha
WHY, that's the rendition that made it famous and martynn bennett loved and mixed it in his recordings, without lizzie higgins we wouldn't be here talking about it, martynn loved the history of these travelling people from scotland and how they sang.
the biker shouldn't be there. they both should be respected separately. the choreography is lame.
The cyclist is Danny Macaskill tho, a world renound one, one of the best in the world, and from Scotland :)
