I asked Margaret Bennett, with Martyn as backing on pipes, to sing me MacCrimmon's Lament during one of their gigs they used to do together down at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's rooms in Leith, Edinburgh. This was in the early 90's while Martyn was still at Uni studying Music. I always made a point of going to hear them together each year and taking my Gaelic speaking mother with me. When they took a break mum and Margaret would have a blether in Gaelic while I got a chance to talk to Martyn. He was such a gentle soul and so incredibly gifted. Just like his mother! :) Such a lovely memory I will always treasure.
Martyn's fingering was impeccable! Not a digit out of place --- throughout this entire setting! His style is second to none. He was a consummate professional, and without doubt, lived his music as he played it. I can envision young Martyn listening to the folklore on his mamma's knee; all about MacCrimmon and his fateful premonition of death. His life oozes out through every pore as he plays this Piobaireachd.... the word which loosely translated means, "the act of piping". Martyn displays this life-giving act with grace, vitality and all of himself -- as only Martyn could. May God bless and keep you in his everlasting and ever-loving arms, my friend!
2005 was a tragic year when we lost Martyn, he was a phenomenal musician and creative talent. To add to the tragedy of a young force of nature cut down before his time, barely a year passed before another great young piper/composer Gordon Duncan also passed away. Like Martyn, Gordon lives on in our memories and in the music they have left behind. I was fortunate to have been able to share jam sessions with them both of them. Rest in peace Martyn and Gordon! You are both very much missed!
The first tune is called "Cha Till e Tuille." The refrain in translation is: No more, no more, No more returning, In peace nor in war Is he returning; Till dawns the great Day Of Doom and burning, MacCrimmon is home No more returning. The second tune is "The Ewe with the Crooked Horn," a strathspey, followed by "Na Goisidich" and "An Drochaid Chliuteach". The Scottish smallpipes were made by Hamish Moore out of Lignum Vitae and were given to Allan MacDonald by Martyn's mother, Margaret, after Martyn passed away. "The ewe with the crooked horn" is euphemism for an illegal still.
what are the English titles for the tunes in this medley? this is one of my favorite videos and I've never been able to find this on a disc. I know the first one is the lament. I'm torn between that and the march of the king of loaise being my favorite tunes.
I was privledged to see Martyn perform in king tuts in glasgow on two occasions. two of the most incredible live performances I have ever seen, his loss is deeply felt by all who loved his music. we share that with his family and friends. As for the two dislikes listed here, you need to grow up you obviously lack something?
Awesome music and a real cool dude..I recommend watching Martyn Bennett "Grit" The Documentary, it really tickled the Celt in me 😂 with blending Traditional and modern Martyn. God bless ye n Rest in Peace 😢
Wee Martyn was one of the most wonderful musicians I have ever known, and also one of the kindest most gentle of souls. Though I was never too fond of his electronica (my problem - I have never liked computers playing music), his unadulterated playing moved and inspired me profoundly. I will never forget the first time I heard him play, nor the last... A truly great musician, and I don't use those words lightly.
Listening to and watching this fills me with love for my country and admiration for this talented man. So many emotions here. Sadness, longing, wonder and joy. Thank you Martyn, thank you so much.
The only man killed in the Route of Moy was the piper in the advanced guard called Donald Ban MacCrimmon.. A piper fae Skye... He had a premonition of his own fate and so he composed this famous tune known now as MacCrimmon's Lament....🏴🏴🏴
Thank you very much javivr, just went on the site and only found "The Piper's Weird" by the search for Macrimmon. Even Vipers page does not have this on it. But again thank you very much for your afford. regards Thomas
there should now be a tune commisioned called Martyns Lament to honour one of scotlands great musical talents. please upload as many Mrtyn Bennett video as you can so that future generation can see the man perform.
Great piping and tune .... seems to reach into your soul. Should be very evocative to those that knew of Martyn and and anyone with a Scottish connection.
Aye, a man of great talent. Is it not sad that himself has gone away.Memories are fine but I'd rather ask of him a request and himself graciously oblige. Yer missed Martyn.
Great stuff. The second last tune is called 'Na Goisidich' and the last tune is called 'An Drochaid Chluiteach'. Both are found in Allan MacDonalds' book 'The Moidart Collection'
Scottish small pipes, sometimes called "cauld wind pipes." They're bellows blown like uilleann pipes, but with a slightly different sound, and without the regulators that allow the playing of chords on the uilleann pipes.
martyn bennett music is amazing, i have an album from him and it shows how talented he was. Im very sad hes no longer with us, he was a great musiscian . I miss you a lot martyn
Stuart -Wish I did have some more of Martyn - I enjoyed this one so much. He did feature in some other Transatlantic Sessions tracks but this was the only one where he was the main player.
Heya Mates, great Piper and a wonderful tune. Anyone outhere who knows where i can find the sores (sheet) for MacCrimmon´s Lament. Would be great if someone knows.
While playing an instrument like this, the look of concentration often occures... also, you can't be too relaxed while playing, as it is a lot of psysical work ;) Good recording!! Cheers!
A few years back, himself gave of his time at a benefit in aid of raising funds for SKAT ( Skye and Kyle against tolls) in Stirling. it was a good night and well worth the near enough 700 mile round trip to attend and be back in Coventry for work in the morning. The bridge is now free. It cannot be underestimated the influence that campaign had on our Scottish government on matters of bridge tolls and PFI/PPP. Thanks Martyn,Yer missed. Tom.
Thank you for this touching playing of ageless music - I love to hear what you do, I love the photography as well. This resonates with the Scottish blood that courses thru my veins (My great grandmother, born in Brechin, was a Kerr.) Greetings from San Francisco - George
Unfortunately I got to know Martyn just a week after his death and I really felt so sorry for him. :( I love what he did. Can anybody please tell me the name of the last two tunes?
My hat is off to Martyn and all pipers, Great Highland, Borders, Northumbrian, Uilleann, Lawland, Sonneurs de Biniou Breizh, Sonneurs de Biniou Kozh, and GaiterosGalego, who aspire to this level of artistry.
aka "The Famous Bridge". Allan Macdonald says he's learnt it from the singing of a man in Uist. It seems it does have lyrics, which are more song-like than pure mouth music. Still trying to get the words, though...

@@eddieg4740 the last tune is called the crooked bridge or twisted bridge in English, an interesting 5/4
Goosbumps
@@eddieg4740 "na goisidich" means "the gossips". They are both in Allan MacDonald's first book of tunes.
Beautifully played and beautiful to listen to.

I understand from the info on the site that they are two names for the same lament. Listen to the composer´s play.
Sublime!
In any language - Martyn, we miss ya.
I marched many a time to the pipes with the Irish Defence Force. The pipes did stir the blood!
Whauw, which key is that? I thought Uilleann pipes didn't go underneath D ?

SMOOTH!
Hi. I think it´s not the same tune now. Look through the link when you type "tune finder" on google.
Has anyone know who is the pipe maker of his smallpipe set? Thanks.
Hi
You can find the sheet music of this lament in the composer´s site (James Scott Skinner)
Look for "Macrimmon" through the collection link.
tha mi agiaridh briscagin mersetaholie. The river flowing made me need a pee. Martyns a legend. RIP.
Excellent. Are these the same as Border Pipes?
He was really the best.
Cumha Mc Crimmain, great piper Mc Crimmon's lament as he dreamt his own death the night before a battle.
Thank you for this touching playing of ageless music - I love to hear what you do, I love the photography as well. This resonates with the Scottish blood that courses thru my veins (My great grandmother, born in Brechin, was a Kerr.) Greetings from San Francisco - George
I can identify three of the four tunes; what's the first reel?
Unfortunately I got to know Martyn just a week after his death and I really felt so sorry for him. :(
I love what he did.
Can anybody please tell me the name of the last two tunes?

Hi, I'm also from Canada. What do you mean formerly? We're still known as Canada. I'm assuming you mean the former colony called Canada?
