  • In this video we shoot my muzzleloader to check the zero before hunting season in West Virginia. I shoot a CVA optima V2 in stainless steel with a thumb hole stock.
I am using 209 primers 50/50 powder pellets and 245 grain Powerbelt hollow points.
Modern muzzleloaders are accurate, easy to load, and lots of fun to shoot.

Time to get a high zoom to pick up the target hit! Nice shooting! Good to see you again. Try powder for less fouling, I bet you could do 8 to 10 before a cleaning.

I have the non V2 Optima. I sighted it in 4 inches high at 100 yards. I have dropped deer from 50 to 225 yrds with it and 3 50 grain 777 pellets.

I bought an Optima V2 LR a few days ago that came with a Konus pro 3-9 scope already on it. Crosshairs were not plumb, so I did loosen the scope and got them Straight up and down. Shot it yesterday twenty-five times from my front porch 250 yards at some gallon jugs I had set up as targets for other rifles. Shooting Hornaday SST Sabot rounds, 250 grains in front of three Tripple 7 Starfire pellets. First shot hit way low, cranked the scope up, second shot was very close, third shot busted a jug. Windage was perfect, I've never touched it. I also shot the New Berry's Blue Diamond 250 grain sabot round which is shaped and looks just like the SST other than having a blue tip and they shot to the same point of impact. I only ran a patch threw the barrel three times in twenty-five shots and all bullets loaded easily and shot accurately. When I was zeroed with those bullets on the second crosshair down, the two-hundred-yard crosshair I shot two of the Federal B.O.R.Lock solid copper bullets, 270 grain and was surprised that they also shot to the same place as the others even though they were heavier. The Starfire pellets shoot pretty clean, and cleanup was very quick when I was done. Very happy with this rifle so far. Like the thumbhole stock, camo, Nitride barrel, everything about it and it seems to be a shooter. Curious now to set up some paper at a hundred yards and see how close the main crosshair is.

im looking at getting the optima v2 LR also. is it rated for a magnum charge(150 grains of powder)? and do you like it? because i can get one that has a vortex copperhead 4-12 on it for just under 500

@@dylankorpi137 Yes, love mine, but I usually only shoot one hundred grain equivalent loads in it. You're going to find a hundred and fifty grains is going to hurt. I don't know that the gain in velocity is worth the gain in felt recoil. If I were hunting bear or moose I might think differently, but paper and tea jugs don't seem to care much.

The problem is the power belt bullets. Shoot an XTP hunter and you’ll be a lot happier

I have found for range shooting it’s better to run a wet then dry patch after every shot just to stay consistent. Yeah it’s a PITA but it keeps every shot more consistent. First shot at game always from a clean barrel. Always did this with my flint and percussion rifles. Since I’ve started using a modern inline it still works good for me. I’d never put much hope in a dirty 4th or 5th shot.

Due to unavailability and stupid high price of the Blackhorn 209 powder in my area I shoot mostly the new Starfire Tripple Seven pellets that are reasonably priced at Walley World. They are not that dirty, but I find I get a smoke ring right where the bullet seats in the barrel after just a couple of shots. When target shooting, I usually run a wet patch down the bore after every shot and concentrate on this ring until I can't feel it anymore and then follow with a dry patch. I get very consistent accuracy using this method. The more often you do this, the easier it is to get it out.

I thought that you didn't get the charge and bullet seated all the way with the ramrod on the 3rd shot, so I went back and looked and your first two. I see you added the brass extension to the ramrod on the 3rd shot. Man that threw me off.

Very observant. I use the ram rod and extension for cleaning patches. Prolly didn't take it off.
      Thanks for watching.
