“Dress your age” is such a fuddy duddy concept. I’m 35 and started wearing band tees again and didn’t realize how much I was limiting myself. I’m having more fun now in my 30s than I have been in a long time.

Men's jewelry tends to be extremely conservative with very few pieces. When all you have is a silver watch and a gold chain it looks a bit odd. It doesnt help that men's formalwear and suits have a limited color palette but that's another discussion.

  • @dashwig

Glad the "dress your age"-thing is mentioned.
There's a lot of content out there about "how to dress as a man 40+" etc. and I find them all so generic and boring. Like, everyone should look like a bank employee or wannabe-millionare and only wearing "classy styles" in order to be taken seriously by your peers etc...I'm 42 and I think avoiding bad fitting clothes is actually the only thing you will not get away with anymore once you hit a certain age. The rest is pretty much - as always - the attitude/how your wear something and if that outfit is really you or not.

Proper appreciating opening the boundaries to fashion, in that it's not what everyone is wearing, or what you 'should' be wearing, but celebrating your own instincts and individuality.
I see the 'older person dressing young' barb a lot, and in RUclips fashion terms a few scathing US channels in that regard.
I love it when some dresses to their personality, if anything it's a great idea of their character, and conversation.

I don't know, a lot of these just seem more or less pointness. Like these aren't really "rules" more just "hedging your bets". Like yes you don't need to match metals but over 50% of the time you're going to look better with matching metals. So it's less so of a rule and more knowing when it works and when you can do something different.

I really like your balanced attitude to style, especially the silly gender specific rule. I opened an old suitcase recently and found a great denim striped Zara Men blazer my ex bf must have overlooked when he left. Poor him! It’s a men’s size M on my women’s size S frame and is perfectly oversized, with the sleeves casually rolled up. Last night while waiting for my uber home from the movies, a guy told me I looked really beautiful! I wasn’t even trying: the ‘ oversized’ denim men’s blazer, super baggy white Uniqlo jeans, a black vest, NB 530s and a dash of red lippy. My cab arrived suddenly, so sadly for him, I didn’t have time to give him my number. Sorry random guy, but I’d been ill n bed for a week before and you made my week! Thank you😊 Clothes are just clothes. Wear what makes you feel good- Age, gender and matchy-ness are daft constructs❤

Thanks for the video! But I'm not so agree with mixing leathers and metals.
I highly recommend you to shoot your videos with the rule of thirds (in this video for example, you could have a invisible line crossing your eyes), it's much more aesthetic. And avoid to have lines crossing you in the background as well (or align them on thirds), in the set up of this video, I would use a framing with the bottom of the painting behind you align to your shoulders (maybe with using a stool).
    Cheers.

On topic though, I've always taken these as mostly guidelines rather than rules, especially for people who are just getting into actually dressing themselves, cuz oh MAN was it baffling when a LOT of guys would approach us back when I worked retail and they didn't even know their own clothing sizes, and it wasn't just the older folk.

The dressing your age part should really speak into people's mindset as they're growing up. Who care about what other people think honestly? If you do, you're spending too much time on social media and consuming too much of what these influences are saying. Just be smart about you wear and what makes you feel confident and comfortable I think are the most important parts.

The mature thing is funny because when I was around 17-18 I heard that a lot and tried to change my style to fit in with being more mature now that I’m an adult. (So dumb. 😂) but I wasn’t feeling it and went back to wearing what I liked and slowly as I gotten older my style has gotten more mature but it wasn’t because I was actively thinking about it but because certain types of clothing appeal to me more now that I’m older.

  • @CanadaFree-ce9jn
    @CanadaFree-ce9jn 3 месяца назад

Western style is not a color. However, western belts, if not oversized, can work if you are also wearing western inspired boots (match your leather, ha!) with non-western pants within reason. Too Western and you look like a cowboy costume, a bit of western can fit in with mid-casual clothes to add a touch of Western and not an oversaturation. You can look more Western in the country, but tone it down in the city.
A point that is often made by those you are critical of, which you seem to close your ear to, is "Know the rules, then break the rules." Once you know the rules and understand why, then you can break them to a point without looking garrish. And yes, some are now outdated like the old English, "No brown in town", referring to both shoes and suits.
Many "women's" clothing was first worn by men and women "stole" the look in order to try to pass as men during a time when women had less rights. Today, women get completely away with dressing 100% as a man (sneakers, jeans, t-shirts, baseball hat) and no one says they are gender bending. Men in early cultures didn't wear pants but rather things equal to today's skirts and dresses. If men want to do the same and still be seen as men, then they need to do it as women do; your girlfriend may dress like a man, may even have short hair, but doesn't bind her breast flat, pad her underwear and put on a fake beard. Be trans if trans, but if not, then wear female clothes in a manly way just as women wear male clothes in a womanly way.

5:48 "Older person stereotype" fashion is what the older generation is wearing which was fashionable during their younger years. Since people born in the 40's to the 70's mostly dress "smart and conservative, their fashion sense gets ridiculed by today's youth due to the stark contrast compared with today's more individualistic and expressive fashion. People born in the 80's and 90's will be mostly wearing clothes fashionable during their younger years when they reach their 60's and beyond.

Experimentation and pushing back on conventional fashion wisdom is a great thing to do, but can itself come off as contrived if done simply for the sake of being different. When it comes to personal style, there is only one rule: be authentic. Dress in a way that makes you feel good about how you look and function in your clothes.

your thing around age though is kinda right. like as much as you might be wanting to fight sterotyping but people never sit and ask why exactly do these exist? Well in the case of older people when you walk around in joggers you just look like you're insecure of your own age. The sort of people who can't accept they are old.

I've noticed that most of the people telling us what is age appropriate, aren't of an age to be advocating these rules. There's a 'f#*k it' sprezzatura I'm wearing the older I get and I'm not letting that go anytime soon!.

You gotta get the brands right before they blow because once they become popular; quality goes down, price goes up, production moves to third world country, popular pieces are recycled to ad nauseam. Soon as I’m complimented by a random teenager at the gas station, I know it’s over LOL. (Nothing against young people btw)

Some cool socks and sandals in warmer weather work for me. I live in NYC, and summers can get very nasty! I REFUSE to have my bare feet exposed to the filthy elements of NYC!

Yes- you can definitely get away with looser fit tops or jumpers for women, but trousers and jeans.. they are cut SO differently from their men's counterparts, they just add a feminine shape to men's builds, to my eye anyway.

Great, as always. I find that guys who adhere rigidly to these rules aren't usually very curious about style/garments as we are, but see them as a cheat code to social status. If there's a passion, then of course you will experiment.
The trouser break bit had me thinking about how sizing seems less relevant today. At least the idea of pieces having to fit one way. Too small is a problem, but especially with button down shirts and outerwear, i am much more amenable to toying with volume than say 7 or 8 years ago. If you like a piece, you find a way to make work; usually as layer of some sort. It has really opened options for me with pieces i was tired of finding new life used non-traditionally.
