Former Navy, I was stationed at Naval Training Center, San Diego when they were filming, they brought in sand and made that volley ball court on the baseball field, The base is closed now but for those that remember that base, down the street from the McDonalds caddy corner was the baseball fields. We couldn’t get close enough to see anything when they were actually filming.

I saw this movie in the theatre I was 10. Like all kids who saw it I wanted to be a pilot after that. I never did become a pilot but I did get to fly with my Canadian Air Cadets group, a Cessna and a glider. We also took a trip to McChord AFB where we got to live a bit of the base life. I swear I've never been marched so hard or stood at attention so long as I did there, my CO was determined to make a good impression. I had a lot of fun in Air Cadets we all did. We use to troll our Flight Sergeant when we did drill, whenever he gave an order we would respond "Yes Sir" and he would say "Don't call me Sir I'm a Flight Sergeant" and we would respond "Yes Sir Flight Sergeant Sir" but as soon as the CO came around it was "Yes Flight Sergeant". He was a good sport.

When they flew into Ice's jetwash, the hot exhaust was drawn into the front of Maverick's plane, robbing it of oxygen. When that happens, the fuel stops burning, called a flameout, and the plane falls out of the sky.

    • @shawnmiller4781

For clarity, the jet wash was sucked into the intakes of both engines. That's those big square things on each side of the aircraft. The intakes take in massive amounts of clean air and mix it with jet fuel sprayed into the turbines. The jet wash disrupted the air flow.

The Topgun origin in the beginning is 100% true. That's how it all started back in 1969. The movie was co-written by then Topgun officer, so while it takes some liberties, it's still much more realistic than the sequel.
The flying was done by Topgun instructors in all featured planes. US Navy brass allowed flying within safety envelope, so it looks good on camera. In reality, safety zone was 500 feet, but that looked boring on big screen. Actors also flew in the back seat, but they were not trained, so the footage was useless because they were constantly fainting from the g-force and looked very disoriented. Actor scenes were later done in studio with fake cockpits and back projection.
The jet wash is a sudden disturbance in the air, which caused one of the F-14's engines stall and sent the plane into the unrecoverable flat spin. Early F-14 engines were prone to this and it was known issue, that claimed too many lives among naval aviators.
Last but not least, Maverick was forced to fly as soon as possible and let go on his best friend. That's how combat works, there's no room for recovery. Topgun instructors were Vietnam war veterans and they had a saying: You can't dwell on a lost friend past the first beer.

Honestly, I think Maverick got everything he needed from Viper, who risked his own career and freedom (by illegally revealing classified information) just to give Maverick a sense of closure regarding his father, which helped him. He also gave excellent advice that Maverick respected and listened to. Charlie tried to help, but her "tough love" and reverse psychology did nothing for Maverick, in my opinion, and even felt cold and inappropriate in a time of grief. The real love story is between Maverick and Viper, who was fond of him from the start. Charlie would never risk her career for him like Viper did. And Viper even offered to fly with Maverick if no other RIO (the guy in back) was available. That line and Viper's delivery of it always chokes me up. Their relationship is far more moving and meaningful than Maverick's romance with Charlie.

This movie was made during the final years of the Cold War, and while the "bad guys" are never named, the red stars on the planes tell you that they are supposed to be "Russians"/USSR - who were the advisory of the Cold War. This film AND the new film intentionally avoid mentioning the names of the enemies, so that they didn't overly offend anyone and could give the movie a worldwide audience.
The actual planes (the black pointy planes with the red stars) are really US-made F-5 jets - low-cost "day fighters" that we mostly sold to other countries who couldn't afford more advanced aircraft. The real Top Gun used F-5s and A-4s to simulate the "enemy" because both planes were much smaller and more maneuverable, forcing the Top Gun pilots to vastly increase their dog-fighting skills if they were to have any hope of winning. In the movie, you actually see the A-4s (which are light bombers, not air-to-air fighters) being used for training - flown by Jester and Viper - but the F-5s are only seen as "Russians."
The planes used by the Americans is the F-14A Tomcat, which really did have problems with their engines flaming out and really could go into a flat spin in that situation, and Goose's accident was based on a real accident. Later models of the Tomcat got much better engines and never really had that problem, but those engines were just hitting the fleet when this movie was made. The Tomcat is flown by a pilot in the front seat, and there is a RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) in the back seat who operates the radar and assigns the missiles to targets. While it isn't shown in the movie at all, the main purpose of the Tomcat was to carry giant, very-long-range Phoenix missiles, and the plane could launch 6 of these at once and the radar could guide each of the 6 to a different target - which is why they needed a dedicated RIO to manage everything. Goose is a RIO and Maverick is a pilot - only the pilot has controls to fly the plane or fire the weapons - the RIO can only run the radar.

Hollywood clearly didn't know what the "hard deck" is meant to represent or they wouldn't have had Maverick go below it after Jester.
The hard deck is meant to simulate the ground for the purposes of the training mission. Once Jester went below it, he technically "crashed" and Maverick won right there. For Maverick to follow Jester below the hard deck meant they BOTH crashed and died.

Pilot training can be fatal, one of your young aviators crashed and died on his first solo flight ;-( The "wash" behind another plane, is the turbulence from the engine exhaust of the plane in front, you lose lift and control. To be a pilot takes talent, education and training. Military pilots more so.

*My father was stationed on the USS Ranger (CV-61) when they filmed the scene, in the Admiral's Quarters, where Cougar turned in his wings and the Captain told Mav & Goose they were going to Top Gun. My father was the only one with the key to that room, that day, so they wouldn't have been able to film that scene without him. He retired, CWO4, off the Ranger in 1987* 😁
*Also, they offered him to be an extra, but he declined. My sisters and I still haven't forgiven him. lol When we all went to the Seattle premier, he was pointing out all his friends. Actually, we forgave him a little, when we got to wear his "Top Gun" jacket, the pilots gave to him, for his retirement, to school.*

On a normal ejection procedure, the plane is moving forward which will clear the canopy from the plane. Then they eject. Pilot goes left, Rio goes right. All good. In a flat spin, there wasn’t time for the canopy to clear the milliseconds before the rockets in the seat fires and they exit the plane causing the potentiometer for a dateline head injury. There where procedures developed in this scenerio. Jettison the canopy, which Maverick says, then eject.

Action, romance, family bonds, personal growth, man vs. man rivalry and man vs. himself. While Maverick's behavior would not be tolerated in the real world, when you allow it in the context of the story it works very well, and of course Cruise acted and presented himself perfectly for the part. The cinematography is outstanding and they used the best pilots to film the aerial sequences. So glad you enjoyed it and had it on your channel.

Hi Dasha. I've never been much of a 'high-five' person...ever...but after this movie was released, I noticed everybody started high-fiving everywhere you looked. Forty years later and it hasn't stopped...and I still haven't felt the need...to high-five. That's my little comment for this movie...I couldn't stay quiet.
I like watching these movies through your eyes, you've made me chuckle with your innocent and organic reactions. You're English is better than many who already know how to speak...the words will come, you're doing amazing. Many would have trouble doing what you're doing, if it were Russian they had to learn.

10:20 It is dangerous, they are going at a speed up to 2.35 times the speed of sound a long way up in the air. That's why this is only for the best pilots.
12:45 It's a very close bond, they are literally putting their lives in each other's hands every time they fly, so they must have absolute trust in each other. If you think your pilot has a problem you have to confront them about it.
21:51 Air turbulence created by another aircraft. In normal formations they may be close, but the shape avoids the planes getting caught in each other's jetwash.

    Dasha,
Even in training, freak accidents can still happen. When pilots eject they experience 10+ Gs of velocity. When Goose’s head hit the canopy, he suffered head trauma and his neck snapped; he died instantly. His death is one, I admit, I still can’t get over. Many a grown adult has broken down hard at that one moment.
After Goose’s death, Maverick wasn’t cautious…he started second guessing everything in the air. Definitely chalked up to survivor’s guilt. The “talk to me Goose” moment was when he snapped back as you saw.

Jet wash - When something moves through the air, it makes a disturbance, like something moving through water. The air coming out of the back of the engines is like a fire hose of very turbulent air. The choppy air made "missed" the intake for the engine and choked it out, causing the engine to stall.

This is outside of the movie, but it made me think of hard to believe real life flying by military aviators. A great example was in March, 1967. Earl Aman and Bob Houghton's F4 Phantom jet was hit by antiaircraft fire and leaking fuel so badly that it couldn't make it back to friendly territory. This was a terrifying prospect because the chances of a successful search and rescue in the heart of a enemy nation were not good, and downed aviators were being killed by angry mobs or were being captured and tortured. Bob Pardo and Steve Wayne's F4 was almost as badly damaged, but they didn't want to abandon Aman and Houghton. They had Aman lower his plane's tailhook, with the tailhook pressed against their plane's windscreen (later against the metal at the base of the windscreen when the glass started to spiderweb), Pardo and Wayne pushed Aman and Houghton's plane 80 miles until they crossed the border where they ejected and were picked up by rescue helicopters.

So the jet wash is the superheated stream of air that comes out the back of the engines. The front of the engines are sucking cold air in, so when Mav sucks in Ice's hot air, the engines failed.
I always say this when I walk past a stinky person "oh no, I've flown right through his jet wash !"

TOPGUN was an actual curriculum for the US Navy, instituted during the Vietnam conflict. It was effectively disestablished in the mid 2010s when the F-14 Tomcat (the REAL star of the movie) was retired. A version of it exists today, but focuses less on air to air combat and is geared towards strike fighters like the F/A-18 Super Hornet and F-35.
Michael Ironside played Richter in Total Recall, that's probably where you recognize him from. I'm surprised you didn't comment on Enterprise's commander being played by the same guy who played Marty's principal in Back to the Future (unless it's in the full one on Patreon).
One of the film's biggest inaccuracies is how "cool" the callsigns were. You wouldn't see a "Maverick" or "Iceman." Callsigns are chosen by the other pilots, and are usually going to be insulting or embarrassing in some way, usually based on something you did or about your personality (Flight of the Intruder has a great example of this: A rookie pilot is dubbed "Razor" by the other pilots not because he's a badass, but because he looked like he was too young to shave!). Occasionally you'll see one that has actual meaning behind it. For example, Ewan McGreggor's brother is a pilot in the RAF, who received the callsign "Obi Two."
The opening scene, showing the fighters taking off and landing were actually filmed aboard USS Enterprise. The "MiG-28s" (of which there's no such thing; MiG fighters always have odd-numbered designations, IE the real-life MiG-29) are actually played BY the American-built F-5 Tiger light fighters referenced in the movie. The F-5 was designed as a cheap fighter for export to American allies without giving them their highest technology. One mistake made by the film is that while the A-4 Skyhawk IS more maneuverable than the F-14, it's a subsonic-only aircraft. The Tomcat was CONSIDERABLY faster.
Maverick would have been grounded MULTIPLE times throughout this film had they actually enforced military law and rules.
Goose's wife is played by 80s/90s romcom queen Meg Ryan. In fact this was one of her FIRST film roles.
Maverick's crash resulted from a very real problem with the F-14 at the time the film was made. The engines were notoriously unreliable, and disruption of airflow could cause a compressor stall which would kill thrust from the affected engine. Because the engines were spaced so far apart, this put a considerable amount of torque on the airframe, causing it to yaw (rotate around its vertical axis) towards the side of the down engine, resulting in the flat spin (where the aircraft spins out of control around that vertical axis) as shown in the movie. The incident of Goose striking the canopy and being killed has also happened in military aircraft (in fact, the entire accident in the film is based on a incident experienced by an F-14 crew). As another aside: They actually put the camera plane used to get the aerial shots (not an F-14, but single-engine propeller aircraft) in a flat spin for the film to get the visual. Unfortunately, the pilot ran into a problem and was killed when the plane crashed during the stunt.
Moments guaranteed to make the manliest of men cry: The sacrifice of the T-800 at the end of Terminator II. The deaths of Boromir and Theoden, the Charge of the Rohirrim, and Frodo's departure in Lord of the Rings. And Goose's death in Top Gun.
The final battle was based on the real-life Gulf of Sidra incidents, in which F-14s engaged and shot down Libyan fighters. The first incident, in 1981, saw US F-14s fired on by Libyan Su-22s, with two Libyan fighters shot down (no F-14s lost). During the second incident in 1989, F-14s downed a pair of Libyan MiG-23s (again, no F-14s lost). The actual depiction of the battle is...less than accurate. For one, it's at MUCH closer range than this sort of fight would actually occur at. Maverick and Iceman are also not using the "Fox" codes (as was correctly shown in Independence Day) when launching their missiles, while the backseat guys (RIOs) are only being used as an extra pair of eyes, rather than actually controlling the radar. There's no use of flares or chaff to distract incoming missiles, and Iceman's plane would have been crippled if not downed outright by cannon hits it took. And a "bogey" only represents an unidentified (but generally presumed hostile) aircraft. Once it becomes confirmed as hostile it's instead called a "bandit." But it does make good cinema.

    • @jeremyfrost2636
      @jeremyfrost2636 2 года назад

I'd add Darth Vader's death scene to the list of moments that will make even the manliest of men cry.
The bogey phrasing also led to one of the best jokes in Hot Shots!, though I don't think Dasha would get it because she has no cultural frame of reference for Humphrey Bogart.

I don't think Iceman was being very safe when he cut Maverick off, obstructed Maverick when Maverick had the shot, failed to take the shot himself, and then carelessly blasted his jet wash down Maverick's intake, which led directly to the accident that killed Goose. It was an accident, but it was also pure selfishness on Iceman's part. Iceman didn't show himself to be a team player, but rather a bully. But sure, Maverick is the "dangerous" one, of course. This movie might be a little too true to life.

In the past, with less avionics, many fighters required two flyers ... one pilot officer, one weapons officer. Today computers are much better, often only a single flyer is necessary per plane. In the US Navy, these are aviators, not pilots ;-) The crew chief on the runway, owns the plane ... the pilot isn't the boss. I once worked with a former Marine aviator, he was former because he violated the rule of not flying thru a thunderstorm (if avoidable). He damaged his plane and could have died (hailstones in thunderstorm). That was the last time he flew!

Flight controls on an aircraft are pitch (up and down), roll (tilt left and right), and yaw (turn left and right, also used to taxi the aircraft on the ground), throttle (fast or slow). You asked about "turning" so many times that a pilot gets sick 11:00 That's rolling, and that wouldn't exactly make a pilot sick, but excessive, out of control yaw rate might. What's the real danger is G-LOC (Gravity-induced Loss Of Consciousness), especially at higher Gs. The stronger the gravity pull in a positive G turn, the less time it takes to induce G-LOC and kill you.
21:48 Jet wash is the other plane's exhaust trail. No oxygen, so the plane that flies through it loses its capacity to burn fuel, resulting in what we call a flame-out. In a twin-engine craft like the F-14 Tomcat, if one engine goes out and the other continues to burn, the plane goes into a flat spin and stalls, losing lift and falling from the sky. Naturally in such a case you want to be able to restart your engine, but if you can't, then you have to eject.
